Elden Ring might be one of the most overrated games ever!

This is the kind of game that you just wander, no shiny dots to follow, no quest list crowding the screen, no spoon-feeding a linear storyline.

It's true sandbox style, and around every corner is a possible legendary experience. It's pretty incredible they pulled something like this off. The map design is so well structured how almost no place is perfectly flat or horizontal. Most surfaces are at some angle that gives more weight to the eerie environment.

With over 200 bosses to find and a massive amount of weapons and spells it really makes it so you can play this game a thousand different ways.

My take is we are lucky a game like this exists. It's obviously not for everyone, but for those that like the aesthetic and combat style this is a dream come true.

It's been a while since I had such controller throwing moments, and jumping for joy boss kills. Also, praise the fucking bird lol
Have you played the game? No shiny dots to follow lmao. In addition, with the map, it's very easy to know where to go, as the Catacombs, Rises, Villages, Castles/Dungeons, Erdtrees, etc. are easily identifiable.

That being said, I did enjoy exploration, but not as much as in prior games.

Also, lemme guess: the game's slideshow intro was actually amazing, a good "call back" to Demon's Souls, and better than the openings of prior games?

And lastly: the storytelling is absolute esoteric garbage and should not be praised.

Oh my god how old are you? 12?

No, that's not how it works. If you don't criticize a product then the follow-ups will hardly get better.

I promise you guys that Miyazaki will not undergo cardiac arrest if people criticize his games.

Yeah I'm sure they dont know what does and doenst work in their magnum opus. It's our moaning and criticizing that'll inspire them.to make a better game.. you're being sarcastic right? They did what they thought would work under budget and time constraints. Using an open world first time btw. I'm sure all ER devs are like fuck it; we'll wait for neckbeard criticism to improve our next game.

1. They still don't know how to program a good camera. EVERY DEVELOPER HAS FLAWS INCLUDING FROMSOFTWARE and therefore every developer should be subject to criticism.

2. You can simultaneously praise and criticize something. Yes, that's actually possible. It's people like you, who excuse terrible fights like Nameless King by saying something like "the camera is bad on purpose, learn when to lock-on and off," that prevent FromSoftware from actually giving a damn about fixing their atrocious cameras, or their janky movement, or their horribly animated cutscenes, etc. For me, the straw that broke the camel's back was the fanbase defending this game's cheap $5 slideshow intro as "amazing" and "actually better than prior games' openings."

3. lmfao please. FromSoftware games sell like hotcakes and yet people continuously make excuses for things like this as if they're some barely-getting-by AA developer. No, they can afford to fix their cameras, they can afford to hire a new cutscene director, etc.

Please note that I have been a fan of FromSoftware since Lost Kingdoms in 2003, but ever since Miyazaki took over, the fanbase has really rubbed me the wrong way, since they continuously shield FromSoftware from any form of criticism and it bothers me that we get game after game with the same problems and shitty low budget storytelling fit for an Indie developer.

I've never said shit about this camera being good. You confuse me with a fanboy.

There"s lots and lots improvements to be made.

I'm trying to say that From itself is aware of these issues and having a new engine (ofcourse combined with very specific detailed context based issues from real critics) will enhance their game.

Not form a moaning rant

Does that makes sense

On mobile sorry

Hey I'm no hardcore fan and detest these elitist gatekeepers. Doesn't mean I dont see the positive and possibility in a quite special game. That's all.

Yeah that's what I thought lol

You criticize people logic (for criticizing the game) and then proceed saying, basically, that all we can do is to praise this "magnum opus" because devs won't give a damn for criticisms of their "perfect" game?

I have been playing the game for quite some time now, but I expected so much better specially given how well received it was. It has so many flaws that would never have a pass for pretty much any other 3rd party franchise, that I can't even comprehend how it has been so highly regarded.

First, the main issue: The open world exploration SUCKS TREMENDOUSLY! I haven't been that much bored by exploration for so long. Not even Far Cry and Assassin's Creed have been this boring to explore, and I do consider them quite boring nowadays. There's no reward to wander around the map, other than that sense of finally finding a cave with some sort of decent level design to go through and fight a boss. The open world is basically a huge useless HUB which you need to traverse to find the actual content of the game.

And talking about caves, good Lord, they were definitely not ashamed at all to recycle content. I have been in pretty much the same catacomb numerous times. Dungeons with extremely similar looks and patterns: you get into a cave, rest at the state of grace, go down stairs and find a locked door, then make your way through this little dungeon, pull a lever, come back to the start, the door is open, fight the boss. Also, the boss might be one you have already fought like 3 or 4 times already before, with slightly variation of attacks and carrying a different weapon. Still, it's already MUCH better than wandering that barren open world.

I'm also under the impression that From Software can't figure out anymore how to make the game more challenging to it's players other than making bosses faster, with extremely high poise, and with big combos that will lock you until they manage to break your defense and fuck you up. This is the "easiest" Soul game because you basically need to kill dozens of optional bosses in order to overpower the main ones.

Also fighting with big and slow weapons is a chore now, because the window you have now to damage the bosses is minimal before they restart their combo cycle. The balance that the previous games used to provide is pretty much gone.

And I won't even talk about the graphics and performance, this game runs worse in my computer than a lot of others that looks way better. But this is no surprise, and it's something that I can ignore as long as I'm having fun with the game.

But anyway, Elden Ring is like two steps backwards compared to all their previous games. Up until now, I always praised the level design of any Souls games, Bloodborne and Sekiro; but it is almost nonexistent in ER. After what they've done to Sekiro, I believed From Software was gonna be able to deliver their best next Souls game, but instead they gave me an unbalanced Boss Rush game with a useless and boring open world hub.

Edit: And because of this, some people in this thread traced my profile. A lowly degenarate that spend the day playing and praising Far Cry, Assassins Creed and Horizon, at my mother's basement, requiring for attention. The game might disappoint, but the hardcore fanbase never does.

Edit 2: Wow, thanks for the Gold, I really appreciate it!
This goes for every damn From game….people cook them up to be the best games ever, but they are indeed not at all 🤷‍♂️. I still love all of you regardless though, so don’t bash me too much 😘

Man FS threads go places...

Just offhand it's a little funny how some are still resistant to change. Go back before talk of Elden Ring and mention how nice it would be to have an open world, mount, and a map just to watch heads 'splode. And yet here we are with their most successful game with those things and Spirit summons (making the game far easier). Sometimes the things people fight so hard against turn out to be not so bad in the end.

And I'd be careful about ER's popularity thinking it's going to change the landscape unless you want a repeat of that post-botw head scratching with people wondering why dev's stuck with the formula that's been working great for them all this time. Or not, those are still fun to read!

I was not being disingenuous at all. Nowhere in my post did I say nor imply that it’s as bad as Ubisoft territory stuff. All I said that it DOES have “shiny dots to follow” and honestly a lot of the time I was marking easy-to-identify stuff on the map and then just going from Point A to B. Again, that’s not me saying the open world was a miserable experience like the other open worlds I’ve tried. I do prefer the tighter worlds of prior games still, but this was the first time an open world didn’t feel like crap for me.

But basically my point of this reply is: I wasn’t being disingenuous. I was being petty.

Yup.

I’m sure if I were to make a thread here or on Reddit basically saying “future FromSoftware title games should not have 3-second-long stupid endings. The mystery and atmosphere would not be ruined” I would get massive backlash. But if the next FS game ends up having 10-minute-long endings and a full-blown cinematic the fanbase would eat it up.

They wouldn't just eat it up, though. They'd claim it was the best cinematic ending in gaming, and that that would be how "real cutscenes" should be. Any following game that had a cinematic ending with the smallest similarity to FS's game (like, a camera angle in one shot that lasts a few seconds) would be called a "souls-like" or that it has a "soulsian ending".

Well, this is not the git gut I was expecting, but it has the same energy.
Jokes and exaggerations aside though (something you seem to have failed to pick up on), I've already stated my actual criticism in regards to this topic. It is something that has become a habit, labeling games as "souls-like" based on just one superficial similarity to FS games, as well as attributing concepts that were already popularized before to souls games.

Haha k. Petty does sound better I suppose ;)

But seriously, for me the game is a breath of fresh air. I hardly use the map, and my first playthrough, I have no idea what the fuck the story is. I just keep finding insane underground dungeons and random bosses by accident.

Next playthrough I'll go with a guide and do all the actual quests. But for now, it's just hours and hours of exploring and getting killed by shit haha. Loving it

I’m being serious! I’ve said in this thread already that ER is the only open world I’ve ever enjoyed. It’s just that I have a bone to pick with the fanbase + I’m very annoyed with certain things not changing/improving game after game. So I’ll take any opportunity I see to be like “UMMM ACTUALLY” lol
