Buying an original PS3 with PS2 BC in 2022. Worth it?

I know it's a risk doing so considering they are old and are only sold in 2nd hand (at least) ...but honestly the PS3 was one of my favorite consoles ever. I remember that console could literally read everything you threw at it. The edition i had was the 80gb edition, before the slim came out in 2009. So a PS3 fat with no BC with the PS2 which broke a while ago.

Why am i thinking about buying another one, this time with PS2 BC? I don't know if i'm alone in this but the fact i have boxes and boxes of old PSOne, PS2 and PS3 games that i can't use is plain stupid and i'm not dealing well with having over 100 boxes of games that are just sitting there. I still have a PSOne and a PS2 but they don't work that good on LCDs like the PS3.

How is native PSOne and PS2 emulation on a PS3 in 1080p screens? Does anyone still have one in 2022?

If so, any advices? is the YLOD fixable in case i get it?

Some games look really good on PS3, I remember God of War 2 and Mortal Kombat Armageddon especially looking surprisingly good on a Ps3

You're going to get in trouble with those editions. Also, ps3 is already too cheap a console, you can get the Slim.

I would buy a pc to emulate and the ps3 separately. Or ps3 and ps2 separately.

They are already cheap and you avoid trouble.

emulation is one way to go, but not every PS2 game works flawlessly. I'm currently playing Disaster Report, and I have to switch to Software for some scenes

The slim is the one edition that doesn't have BC with those PS2 games though.

FYI, the root cause of the YLOD has supposedly been determined and solved. It comes down to replacing the NEC capacitors (link).

Do note that you should still regularly maintain your device through clean up and such. There are various DIY guides for this. Various games like Warhawk and MotorStorm are getting their MP servers revived through community effort, btw.

The problem is its reputation as a desirable object, so sellers tend to greatly overprice it. If you can find one that isn't, go ahead. The YLOD is fixable as stated above.

Also if you live in Europe don't do the same mistake i almost did and try to import a (cheaper) American one. The PS2 region lock was included into the PS3 as well and it will refuse to play PS2 PAL games.

I've seen people selling them for 250 euros. I'm trying to negotiate with one guy selling it for 250 euros but since it has no box, i'm going to try to go for 200 euros. I really don't see them much cheaper than this.
The YLOD is something that i need to take to a professional cause i'll never be able to do it lmao.

Yea still a bit mad that i sold mine. It had RLOD (Red Light Of Death, a lesser known but arguably even more deadly cousin of the YLOD) issues and kept crashing at random so i decided to get rid of it and buy a Slim (Got ~150€ which i thought was a amazing deal back in 2012 or so). Now when i'm not a kid though i really wish i had kept it.

Anyway, 250 is probably a realistic price for them. I've seen people try and flog them for 500+ though which is just ridiculous. This is not a Net Yarose that they are selling.

FYI, all PS3s uses emulation for PSOne games. If you want to play PSOne games on a modern TV there's the PS1Digital which is a mod that will add an HDMI port to an original PSX.

The other option is using a MiSTer, the PSX core was recently released and is almost perfect. When I first tried it, I got it setup, enabled a CRT filter and the games felt right compared to any emulator I tried using to run them.

I'd buy one if I had a way to know it wouldn't just die on me. It's extremely cool that the PS3 had PS1, PS2 and PS3 hardware at some point.

None of it would matter if Sony actually put any effort into emulation but they clearly don't and can't be bothered to invest in it. They've made every wrong decision when it came to that, of all things they spent years focusing on useless garbage like trophies support and getting in the way.

With the market share PlayStation has it's just sad that they can't put together a dedicated team to properly take care of this. As always with Sony, minimal effort with anything other than their main games.

Get a recent Intel NUC, let it boot into a graphical 10-foot interface and you're done. Slightly more expensive, but with better emulation, and it doesn't break down when you fart in the general direction of it.

If you have a modern enough PC (and presumably a PS3/4/Dualsensencontroller), you can basically emulate every PS3 and PS2 game. PS2 being easier than PS3.

If not, PS3 itself is fine I guess for the 7th gen exclusive multiplaforms or PS3 exclusives.

Ratchet. InFamous. Killzone. Motorstorm. Gran Turismo. Red Dead Redemption. A few others I'm forgetting.

Personally I would get a PS3 slim and a model PS2 slim with OpenPS2Loader. Would be a lot more reliable compared to an original PS3.

The framerate of the gif makes this even funnier, its not actually that low fps natively lol. Maybe at the start or end when its loading in/out though actually.

I had to replace the entire laser unit in my PS3 that has BC in it... (MGS4 package, don't remember the HDD size now - i'd have to go look) that was several years ago though i don't know if the lasers are still readily available if one fails now? I'd be a little wary of buying older 2nd hand cause they do fail but hey if the console is cheap to buy to begin with then it's no huge loss either way.

Too risky getting a fat PS3 with PS2 BC - they all die out.
Since you already have a PS1 and PS2, already have all the games, and want to play on a flatscreen, just get an upscaler like an OSSC or RetroTINK 5x.
RT5x works and looks incredible with PS2.

I compare buying an old console to a high mileage car I believe gamers are dismissive of other ps3’s that don’t have backwards compatibility.

I have the original and but not working atm. Was playing some PS2 games a few weeks ago and it just shut off mid-game. Need to re-apply thermal paste since it's been over 3 years. Someday I'll do the capacitor mod. Point is it's cool as hell but requires TLC to maintain should you go this route.

No. Its only worth getting if your a collector and have a nice glass display case with lights.
You also must have friends over for game nights to show off your collection.

I’ve been looking for one but they are usually a bit expensive and to make sure it stays alive you have to be prepared to take it apart, clean it and maybe even do some modifications.
The ones I’ve found that are less than €200 usually has YLOD already.

In short: If you find one for a good price it’s worth it.

TOKINs aren't YLOD issue. Dying RSX is.

1. Buy PS3
2. Dissasemble and delid.
3. Put back and enjoy

When it dies (and it will cause of RSX) swap it to 40nm unit from Slim or Super Slim and continue enjoying.

AFAIK YLOD can depend on a lot of different things, there isn’t a clear answer exactly how to solve or prevent it and that’s one of problems with it.

I remember hearing Spawnwave talk about it and that you could count the time between turning on the console and the blue light switching over to a yellow light and from there get a rough estimation of where in the system the problem is located. I think it was in this video:

Well.....its hard to say. Here in South Florida, a repair shop I know actually was able to repair the one I had years ago, maybe 2012 or something my original had issues, they were able to repair it and its been 10 years, no issues. Its up to you tbh as I don't know how much you play old games. I've had my launch version for....well since launch lol, 16 years and its still going, but I do really only play it maybe a few times a year. For other media stuff, i actually have a slim I use for that (currently rewatching all of Murder She Wrote from torrent on there lol)

You can still get a used PS2 for a good ass price too so lol But if you really want the 3 piece combo and a biscuit, I'd say go for it.

A few PS2 games I return to yearly, Onimusha 1-4, Killer 7, Viewtiful Joe 1 and 2, Okami and Valkyrie Profile 2.

Some PS3 classics like MGS collection as MGS4 is still only on there lol I'm 99% sure the FFX remaster is better on PS3 then PS4 still because of that odd sound bug thing, Killzone 1 and 2, Infamous series, imho BEST place to play Persona 3 and 4.

Some PS1 titles I've gone back to, FFIV, FFV, FFVI and I think thats it. Years ago I actually kept waiting for sales to fully get all my favorites on digital so, I don't really use it often for native BC outside of those 3 games as they work fine and their digital version on PS3 is....the same thing lol

Native PS2 works just fine for me on PS3. I've never had any issues or maybe I just don't own the games that have issues or something on it.

After my PS2s died I use my og PS3 for bc. The great thing sbout it is you can connect scart or composite and such, so easy to connect to a good old crt tv.

Will look just like it should. No ugly uoscaling.

I still have my YLoD PS3's hdd, any hope of recovering it's data or nah

The PS3 is shit for playing PS1+PS2 games.

It adds a huge amount of input latency all while displaying them worse than the regular consoles.

I bought a BC PS3 last year and I had a blast replaying resistance 1 and 2. I have yet to find time to keep on playing games like silent hill 2 and classic games from Ps1
