Last of Us and Days Gone veterans announce new studio Liithos and NFT game Ashfall

The company’s debut game is Ashfall, which is described as “the first true Web 3.0 AAA title for PC, console, and the Hedera network”, which uses a “native, energy-efficient cryptocurrency” called HBAR.

Liithos CEO Mumbauer previously spent 13 years at PlayStation as the head of its Visual Arts Service Group, working on the likes of Uncharted and The Last of Us. More recently he was the co-founder and CEO of That’s No Moon.

John Garvin, the former creative director and writer at Days Gone developer Bend Studio, is serving as vice president of creative at Liithos, and is the writer and director of its debut project.

“Ashfall will have players fighting to survive a world scarred by global warming, the ignited volcanic Ring-of-Fire, mysterious and disruptive energy fields, and warring enclaves, beginning as a connected Single Player adventure that will evolve into a Multiplayer PVP & PVE cinematic transmedia world,” Liithos said in an announcement on Thursday.

“Gamers can choose to play the game leveraging the Hedera network where scavenging, discovery and exclusivity are the focus for a build, sell and trade experience.

“Ashfall currently has partnerships in place with legendary comic book creators, artists and influencers as the story will begin with a digital comic written by John Garvin, featuring cover art by Worldstorm and DC Comics’ Brett Booth.”

Garvin said in a statement “Our goal is to create a truly next-gen, open world experience that engages with new technologies to allow user-generated content.

“As always, our focus is on creating beloved characters, captivating stories and evolutionary gameplay and a world worth exploring, not just in games, but other media as well.”

Mumbauer was asked by VentureBeat how Web 3.0 will play a role in Ashfall.

“Transmedia and the power of connected worlds has always been something I’ve been extremely passionate about,” he responded. “There is a bit of a misunderstanding in my opinion on what blockchain gaming could mean for gamers. I see the blockchain as a railway and the main station is videogames.”

Mumbauer added: “The other rail stations all lead to the main one, which is games and the trains deliver precious cargo (NFTs) to gamers via the other stations. It’s a way to have deeper and more engaging experiences than we’ve ever seen before. We want to reward gamers for doing stuff they already love doing, and create a path from those areas they love back to the thing they love the most, gaming.”

I like John Garvin, and I think he (and the entire studio) were unfairly shit on over Days Gone. But he is way, way up his own ass about how great of a writer he is. He writes perfectly serviceable, but very dopey, video game stories that fit perfectly fine in the games that they are in.

This project sounds fucking dumb though. Was reading a bit about it earlier today.

They really should just be more transparent and say they are in it purely to try and make a shitload of money and retire early. Obviously neither of those will happen though.

I can't speak to this new studio (and if I could, I would not). But I will say this regarding your desire for more transparency around this sort of stuff: IF there's any motivation to NFT beyond what the guys are actually saying in the interview, the more logical assumption is that idiots with lots of cash are funding NFT/Blockchain crap based on nothing more than hype and empty promises and Mike and Garvin prob saw a group that would fund their creative dream and assume they can work within the NFT structure without pissing off gamers. It's pretty damn easy to get funding for NFT stuff...maybe not as easy as it was a year ago but hell, my last game took a big ol shit and I've still had 3(ish) offers to take cash for a NFT startup.

Waiting to see if these NFT Blockchain games establish a pattern of sucking before passing judgement.

Right now though, wish them the best.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
Their photoshot reminds me of "look at how cool we are, you will regret by not hiring us!"

The chance of NFT games working seems low because of how NFTs have been abused for the sake of making a quick £.

Will be interesting to see if anything comes of it. Im gonna withhold my cynicism and stay ignorant for a little longer.

That's gaming for ya.

Old days: Make games from the heart, regardless of high sales or low sales. Secondary priority is extra revenue from possible PC expansion discs.

Modern day: Build game around mtx revenue model (including any getting on the NFT train). Secondary priority is making well built polished games.
Actually it seems now to be pitch an idea and see if Sony or MS want to bite, if they do actually try to make the game.

If not abandon it and forget it happened.

You aren't indie if you have big publisher money funding you.

Maybe they hope if they are somewhat successful with their idea and game that Sony buys them.Sony buys lots of their ex workers studio’s back. You never know what’s to come and how it will be.I mean major hits like league of legend or Minecraft when first showed had probably lots of people saying what is this trash. And later they became the huge Franchises they are now.It only needs a good exiting idea.So let’s wait and see with what they come up with

If they wanted to be with Sony they would have just stayed.....
Yes and no.You must think of it like that.If you stay you are normal employee.Let’s say you leave have an great idea form your own studio and make a successful game You get in contact with Sony Sony thinks your game is great your studio has lots of potential so they buy your studio let’s say 50 million and you say deal. Now you are back at Sony but as a multi millionaire with his own studio while before only worker in an existing studio

I mean I was severely disinterested in it after reading Last of Us and Days Gone... but then NFTs came into the mix and I started laughing

This has doomed written all over it. I eagerly await its eventual crash and burn, same with all things NFT and "web 3.0."

Second priority is to rush the release as soon as the game is barely playable.
