Worst/Most Difficult boss you ever fought?

For me, it's gotto be this bitch right here. Jeanne from the first Bayonetta game:

YGZKbLZ.jpg

The picture above shows her fourth and final ("true") form, as prior to this you fought her 3 times, each time getting progressively worse. And the difficulty is not simply beating her -- the game gives you many, many tools to do that which can make it easy. But if you're trying to beat her in the game's highest difficulty and get a "Pure Platinum" (essentially "perfect") ranking.... yeah, you will lose a lot. And probably rage a lot, too :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Just to quickly recap:

  • Seems like her moveset is almost completely random. It's practically impossible to cheese her or exploit the AI. This is not like "SNK boss syndrome" that, even if they're cheap, their AI is so simple it can be exploited.
  • She has practically instantaneous Wicked Weaves. There's pretty much no warning, she can pull them out at anytime. She says something that sounds like "Bare!" but by the time she says it, it's too late and you're likely eating one of her Wicked Weaves to the face.
  • She has multiple moves (a punch dash move and a heel slide, among others) that can cover a hilariously large distance within single digit frames, and she will likely hit you with one of those moves. I mean, you have to essentially be a pseudo-god at parrying or dodging to avoid those moves in certain situations. It's ridiculous.
  • I love Bayonetta 1, it's one of my favorite games of all time. But man, the design of the Jeanne boss fights is terrible. She's by far the most difficult boss, yet:
    • The camera is absolutely horrible in most segments of her fights. (Camera issues are bad throughout the game, and it's a huge stain on an otherwise flawless game). Which means you can't see shit, and since she can instantaneously summon moves that require single digit frame counters/parries, often off-camera, you will very likely get hit at some point.
    • It's not hyperbole to say that the stage design is horrendous. The game designers went for over-the-top Japanese "cool" action set pieces, but they didn't take into account that these are Jeanne fights. So you're fighting this most difficult boss on, for example, the top of a moving rocket -- I mean, it's not the biggest problem for me but that shit is borderline seizure-inducing. So you have a shaky rocket, with a really bad camera, fighting this exceptionally difficult boss. Recipe for disaster :messenger_tears_of_joy:
  • EDIT: Of course I forgot that you can't combo her, unless you're on Witch Time (which of course is not available on the hardest difficulty without a special item).
  • EDIT2: She has pretty instantaneous recovery on most of her fast moves.
I do have to say though, that once you do get that "Pure Platinum" for the fight, on the hardest difficulty, is incredibly satisfying. But getting there is arguably an exceptionally frustrating endeavor.

So, GAF, what boss(es) have you found incredibly difficult, cheap, or annoying? Discuss!

[I'm sure there will be lots of votes and mentions of Souls-series bosses....]

I both love this boss and I also extremely hate it.

I love it because EPIC music and nice call back to original Drakengard and I hated because its unfair motherf***cker.

Good call on linking a video, I'll check it out.

I should link a video to the Jeanne fight. The reaction of non-Bayo players will probably be: "What the fuck is even happening!?" :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Umi Bozu from Nioh. Man. Ultra fuck this guy. The fight takes place on a dock which you CAN walk/roll/get pushed off and insta die. Typically the boss stands a few feet past the drop off point but will get closer periodically so you can hit him. UNTIL HE SWIPES YOU WITH HIS TENTACLES AND YOU FALL IN FUCK YOU UMI BOZU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For me it was the Blood Starved Beast in Bloodborne.

I beat that about half an hour ago, it was really hard, but I thought father Gascoigne was harder. It took me a few tries, but then I realised all I had to go was get close, and move to the left every time it swinged

TintoConCasera

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
Took me multiple days to beat the 7th Force in Alien Soldier. Good shit tho, I wouldn't say it was "bad".

Yeah bloodborne was my first Soulsborne experience. I think I was taking on the blood starved beast a bit too early. I think I found Father Gascoigne a bit easier just because he wasn't the blood starved beast. Lol.

M.Bison is a cheap bastard
I think he is hardest in the original Street Fighter II: World Warrior. In that game, he could literally stun-lock you with Scissor Kicks. And all his moves in general have super high priority and massive damage.

Starting with Dash (Champion Edition) though, he became much easier.

Gil from SF3 is some next level bullshit.
YES. For a long time I found him to be much more bullshit than World Warrior Dictator.

BUT just last year, I was able to exploit his AI, and at least in New Generation I can beat him with decent amount of ease.

Yoooooo... The OG. Those single digit frame, complete health bar uppercuts.

But, at least he gave you a bit of a consistent warning before each one.

Sin and Punishment 2's final boss is the most difficult but I liked it. Might be one of the only times I thought I may never beat this despite having beaten so many hard bosses from other games.

Get Ready Trailer GIF by BANDAI NAMCO

So OP as a boss she twisted the Internet to simp for her rival just to mentally cope.

”Guys, Radahn is the best!”
“Why?”
”He arguably defeated a blind woman with cancer!”
”That doesn’t sound impressive especially if it’s up for debate.”
”But she cheated by using magic bullshit!”
”So he doesn’t use magic?”
”No, he does. But he does it honorably. Like a proper duelist.”
”When I fought him he immediately began sniping my ass from a mile away.”
”……yes, but with honor.”
”Okay, sweetie, whatever helps you sleep at night.”

(to be clear, I liked Radahn fine enough, but the dick sucking from the fandom was really obnoxious)

Is this from a Souls game?

I guess I'll throw in Vergil 3 from Devil May Cry 3 , since he parallels the Jeanne encounter from the OP as both the climactic rival fight and most difficult encounter in the game when played on max difficulty:

Touch of death combos, immaculate spacing, massive health bar, health regen during devil trigger, the ability to take himself off the field and fill it with hitboxes while under the effects of said health regen, the list goes on.

Jump-canceled beowulf divekicks and various other exploity cancel tech are essentially mandatory if you want to make a dent in this guy.

I'm not a fan of games with boss fights although there are a few exceptions. Deus Ex Human Revolution is one, I like the boss fights in that game. I also like the mythological boss fights and legendary creatures in A/C Odyssey.

For most hated I think I would go with Tartarus at the end of Halo 2. I'm also not crazy about the numerous fights with the Warden Eternal in Halo 5.

This is an excellent post. Especially spot on with Vergil as he does, in many ways, probably serve the same role to Dante that Jeanne does to Bayonetta. (Weren't DMC1 and Bayo1 pretty much conceived by/designed by the same guy?)

Love the technical gameplay talk. From what you wrote, even without (yet) watching the video, I can imagine this fight being an absolute nightmare.

I own the Devil May Cry trilogy on PC so when I do get around to 3, I'll experience the nightmare for myself :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Wizpig from DDK Racing.

Hijo de su pink floyd.

I can beat any Dark souls Boss or any NES boss... But this pig mother fuc... Is too hard

Just watched this. I can imagine in the harder difficulties, if you miss even just one of the boosters, that you will lose to this guy. Holy crap.

Also, additional appreciation for your post as I am both a native Spanish speaker, and a huge fan of Pink Floyd :messenger_tears_of_joy:

This.... THIIIIIISSSSSSSSSSSSS jesus christ even years later I see this image and I just fucking hate that stupid fucking music.... I mean origins has made it even worse but dear fucking god that's is not a good memory.

Now this is hard because I feel like I have fought harder things in the past but as far as something that has recently stuck with me that made me think "man this is utter bullshit who designed this?"

In the end I had to look up a guide and essentially "cheese" him... the only way to win is effectively not play the game by the rules you have used up to that point and just lock down the guy and not let him phase shift twice ever, essentially you avoid letting the battle playout and make sure to kill him in under a very small time window... its very unfun and was the lowlight of the game for me... although it was nice to get the extra trophy for beating him after so much BS.

The most recent one i remember is Nameless King in DS3. Lady Butterfly was kicking my ass too in Sekiro, although i think you are supposed to get to that area later in the game? Sick boss though, such cool visuals.

Looks easier than Pride and Joy fight

It is when you look up a guide and follow a cheese build, i finished Pride and Joy the first time by just playing the game, Behamut was a harder fight. This dude unless you look up a guide to just cheese him is the only combat encounter that I couldent just do by playing well. Even with the guide there was always an element of luck, many a run was ruined in phase two by an unlucky silence, its literally keep trying cheese until RNG gives you the green light.

And of course he looks easy in the one video people upload, that's why they upload it, what you don't see is all the attempts before it.

Highlight's of several hour long stream where maximillion tried to clear, who is a better gamer than most.

And another one, Alma from Ninja Gaiden Black:

Difficulty level doesn't matter, Alma is just hard.

All of her attacks hit like a truck, she's got a command grab with a massive hitbox to catch you in recovery, and you have to land a heavy knockdown (or anti-air through her very high dodge chance) in order to get a damage window.

And on higher difficulties, she has friends.

This is an excellent post. Especially spot on with Vergil as he does, in many ways, probably serve the same role to Dante that Jeanne does to Bayonetta. (Weren't DMC1 and Bayo1 pretty much conceived by/designed by the same guy?)
Cheers! And yeah, Kamiya directed both DMC1 and Bayo 1.

I think the 'strong rival character who has your moveset' idea is something that was percolating in Capcom's action studio noosphere during the PS2 era (DMC1 - Nelo Angelo, Viewtiful Joe - Alastor, God Hand - Azel, etc), and formed into something definitive when Itsuno's team did Vergil.

Then Kamiya, Mikami and co. went off to form Platinum and more or less turned it into a subgenre meme with Jeanne, Sam from MG Rising, Vorkken from Wonderful 101, the evil cop from Astral Chain, etc etc etc. :messenger_grinning_smiling:

The guy in the video makes it look easy since he does it no damage, though on some level it feels like you have to due to the sheer danger that taking a hit represents.

And you'll have plenty more to worry about before getting to Vergil if you go for Dante Must Die! The special gimmick - equivalent to Bayo taking away your witch time on NSIC - turns the entire game into a ball-breaking mastery check.

It's good stuff, if exhausting, and ranks among the hardest of the hard in my book.
