Name your fave modern horror movies and why

AV

We ain't outta here in ten minutes, we won't need no rocket to fly through space
Watched The Sadness after hearing how horrid it is, certainly is although it's more palatable than movies that push boundaries for the sake of it. Felt like there was somewhat of a point to the violence even if the point was quite on the nose. Worth a watch if you're a fan of practical gore effects. It's basically Crossed: The Movie if anyone read those comics.

This is a tough one as a huge horror fan because I love just about all of them for different reasons. So in no particular order (and trying to keep it as "modern" as I can):

  • Ghost Stories (2017) - An anthology of stories tethered together by the experiences of the protagonist. It has a real "holy crap" moment in the final act and includes my favorite performance from Martin Freeman
  • VHS (2012) - Another anthology. Very creative and raw. It features a bunch of fresh young actors who really gave it their all IMO
  • The Witch (2015) - I always enjoyed the Satanic mythology from the UK and New England area in the US, so this struck many of the right chords for me. Great direction and acting all around
  • The Ring (US, 2002) - A simmering, tense, slow build. Very underrated IMO
  • Hereditary (2018) - As a fan of the occult this one snuck up on me. The reflections after watching it is as good as the experience of a first watch
  • It Follows (2014) - Very original. Great young cast. The world feels well realized, very lived in if that makes sense. The soundtrack is piercing

I could go on all day, and am probably forgetting some real bangers, but that's what I have off the top of my head.

Paranormal Activity and Hereditary are the only two movies to put me on edge as an adult.

Candyman and The Blair Witch Project were the only movies to put me on edge as a child.

Hereditary and Midsommar.

These types of movies that develop from old cultural and religious sources which use horror to pull at deep neglected psychological elements like weeds and can break the fertile soil of the subconscious are among my favourite.

Annihilation for the way it appears to interpret crossing the veil of Paroketh to achieving Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel.

Dark Song. Similar reasons to the first three. The eerie sense of coincidences speaking messages was well used.

The Masque of the Red Death
Vincent Price's most sinister character.

You were a way braver kid than me, then. Just seeing the VHS box cover of Child's Play 2 made me sleep in my older brother's room on the floor for a few nights after.

'it follows' was fantastic, and a really cool, original concept

'the platform' wasnt super scary, but quite horrific imo

and im a sucker for anything in the found footage genre, so its not fair for me to include any of those.... but if i had an honorable mentions list, paranormal activity 3, VHS and cloverfield would be on there

It Follows is a excellent movie.

Hereditary (and maybe the Witch) is the first movie to chill me to the bone since I first saw The Exorcist or Blair Witch (I was young).
And it probably did it more effectively. I just love that movie. There is such a thick, dark atmosphere surrounding it.

Midsommar was great but I don't really consider if horror in the sense that I did Hereditary. It felt much more of a thriller / intense drama to me, and although I loved the film and themes it was quite linear and one dimensional compared to Hereditary which rewarded rewatching.

The lead character was every dudes fucking worst nightmare asexual girlfriend, which was a horror in and of itself I suppose.

I thought Hereditary was terrible

Now Midsommer was great horror

Annihilation was another great one. I am a huge fan of cosmic horror

A Dark Song was another excellent one. I thought the twist at the end was well done

Eh I felt that the boyfriend was more at fault in that relationship

There are straightforward interpretations to be made from particular vantages to draw attention to one's favourite features.

The flaws of all the characters are on display and undergo transformations throughout the festival during the movie. Including these broadens the scope.

Hereditary, I found it rather nasty, not the kind of horror I like though

What did you find wrong with Hereditary?

The processes and results were similar underneath the gloss.

I have yet to see any cult / demonology movies that did it better than Hereditary... I don't think any exist beyond it at this point.

I can see that being a drawback for the experienced and perceptive viewer.

I enjoyed that feeling as I identified with the cultists and felt like I was vicariously watching things unfold.

I was laughing at some really stupid stuff in the film too.

My favorite horror film is Rosemary Baby.

It's main value for me was the was it handled the mechanics of the moonchild and transmigration of the soul using the goetia against the psychological pressure experienced by the characters. The way it forces them to do certain things. Both Hereditary and Midsommar are valuable psychological horrors for their presentation of the source material for consideration.

Rosemary's Baby is one that I should have put in that thread of well known movies that I haven't seen.

Moonchild?

Yeah you should watch Rosemary's Baby when you get the chance.

Regarding moonchildren: It would probably be shocking for some to consider the global scale that some occultists have been involved in with their experiments according to reliable sources. :devilish:

That should be made into a movie.

I'm really a fan of horror movies.
I have an hard time just to name 5, so I'll name a few in no particular order, well maybe except for the first on the list which I consider the best ever.
The Exorcist
Jaws
Poltergeist
Alien
Hellraiser
The Night of the living dead
Evil Dead
The Conjuring
Rec
Company of Wolves
The shining
Badadook

Intentionally bringing a particular otherworldly entity into the body of a human through sex.

That's interesting.

I heard the term before but I thought it meant people being affected by the stages of the moon. That they were born under the Moon sign Cancer

Gerald's game is quite good

I hated that one. Out of The Stephen King adaptation 1922 was the far superior one.

Can you say more in detail? I'm curious to learn more?

The Exorcist- Good movie but Atheist lady took too long to get a Exorcist

Jaws- Saw this recently. Excellent movie

Poltergeist- Good Horror Flick

Alien- Good Horror film but prefer the sequel Aliens

Hellraiser- The first one is excellent

The Night of the living dead- Never Saw it

Evil Dead- Hated it

The Conjuring- Good movie. I like the Conjuringverse. They always have interesting designs for the demons

Rec- Never Saw this

Company of Wolves- Never Saw it

The Shining- Overrated. I thought the book was way better

Badadook- Hated it due to the son being annoying. I felt for the mom though. I was like this is why I don't want to be a parent lol

Typhonian OTO, Kenneth Grant and Nema activities passed to me from Linda McFarlane.
Answering after a quick espmail and getting the psychic sense it was ok expecting this question. Hope it sates immediate curiosity and gives a viable rabbit hole.

There's also the modern basis of the term in the novel by the same name by Crowley.

Might talk more about it in another thread.
*edit - Maybe the Paranormal thread. At least one of Nema's declared moonchildren was one of the people involved with V'ger.

Back to movies.

I am stunned by the use of the term "modern" in this thread, but within the last decade I have grown rather tired of the traditional slasher/haunting plot and have found more interest in thrillers often thrown under the same banner. Two such films come to mind:

The Wrath of God (2022)
A woman tries to convince a journalist that a famous author secretly murdered her family over a decade as vengeance for destroying his family with a sexual assault claim. The story unfolds in a manner that is captivating and the acting throughout is great (though I imagine some will throw a hissy fit at the ending).

* Change subtitles to English

The Signal (2014)
A group of friends investigates an address found by tracing an IP address of hacker responsible for nearly getting them thrown out of MIT and end up being abducted by aliens. It just subverts all expectations with its twists and turns in a way that is stunning.

Other horror films I have watched recently and found captivating:

Day of the Dead (2008)

A local military unit attempts to quarantine an outbreak of a virus that unknown to them turns the locals into zombies. The most fascinating part of this film is that it captures how people respond to an ongoing zombie outbreak.

Zombi 3 (1988)

A couple of off-duty G.I.s and tourists in the Philippines deal with a zombie outbreak caused by a stolen biological weapon. This film makes traditional zombies terrifying and shows a sureal scenario in which science and government bring about a zombie apocalypse.

Curious what happens at the ending?

Hereditary - by far…

Reminded me of the The Exorxist - a lot. 3 halves of the film are about a very personal family tragedy. It’s domestic drama at its finest. All inside a house with shots of corridors and doors and an impending doom that you can’t quite put the finger on.

Last 30 minutes all hell brakes loose and the family drama turns into pure horror. One of the most scary films I’ve ever seen in a film theatre.

I just watched The Signal after seeing this post and thinking the subject matter sounded interesting. I really wanted to like it, but I think I needed about 30% less "Lost"-style storytelling of introducing more questions than answers.

One of my pet peeves is a filmmaker introducing questions when you get the impression they don't have satisfactory answers to them. My lack of faith in them being able to answer the big questions are reflected in missing some basic stuff. Such as
Why didn't Nic, a genius, ask basic questions like, "Who are you, Laurence Fishburne, and why should I listen to you?" How did Nic go so long without noticing his legs were replaced with alien tech? Why didn't Jonah involuntarily explode the human part of himself when he used his new robo-hands to create smash-quakes on the ground? What was up with Haley? Drugged up enough to hop in a semi-truck to forward the plot but also cognizant enough to recognize she needed to pull a gun on the driver when required?

I got the broad strokes of the story and twists, but it left out crucial information for the sake of keeping the audience in the dark.

I mean a sexually transmitted Monster, how cool is that?!

VHS 1-2 were brilliant. 3 was kind of meh but the last one was holy shit awesome!

Last scene pretty much ruined the entire film
Thanks for calling this to my attention poster who first posted it, but I agree. They had the right idea, until the ending invalidated it all and I can only hope a sequel rescues it. It felt like a cop out and to me
It would have been better if they stuck with the logic of togetherness beating the demon, the girl doing whats right by the old man saving her. Despite her circumstances. What they did with the caretaker Christian woman was stupid to. Rules make this kind of film interesting to me. I just didnt like the could have killed them anytime just playing with them,. I dont like to be hand held, but no explanation for anything or not enough strands to draw any decent conclusion to why hurts replay ability. I said it reminded me of someone handing you a deck of horror cards saying look at these gruesome pictures and you do and they are gruesome and then you say why.
