Do a lot more people game on monitors than I was aware of? I am happy that this feature is coming since I see a lot of people asking for it, but my 4K OLED doesn't benefit.

Aside from being able to use a high refresh rate 1440p monitor is there a benefit to this that I am now aware of.
PS5 supports 1440p. that's all there is to it. now people with 1440p monitors can use them to play their PS5.

Ok. Cool. Happy for those that wanted it.

As critical as I have been on MS for their constant delays in 1st party development, they have absolutely NAILED the design of Xbox Series X in terms of gaming features. VRR, ALLM, 1440p all were available day 1.

My TV is a bit of an older one, and while it was way ahead of its time with Freesync + Gsync + HDMI-VRR + 120hz support, it only supports 4K60, 1440p120 and 1080p120 because it's only HDMI 2.0

before I always had to use my PS5 at 1080p120 when I wanted to use 120hz modes in games.

with this update I can finally go up to 1440p at 120hz

so that's another use.

Sony have a new range of gaming monitors, one of which support 1440p

VRR and 1440p weren't just introduced with Series X|S. they were also on Xbox One consoles.
I know, but they weren't there day 1. No MS fault since those features barely even existed in 2013 if at all. Nevertheless, SOny never bothered to implement those features into PS4 and many weren't for PS5 on launch.

HDR is really the only feature I can think of that Sony implemented in their consoles ASAP.

I can't recall if the original fat Xbox One ever got those features or did they only get introduced when the Xbox One S came out?

They always send me PS4 beta codes and then ask me if I enjoyed the PS5 beta.
I am looking forward to trying this and maybe the game list thing, though if it's only under your collection then I won't bother:
  • Compare 3D Audio and Stereo Audio
    • You can now listen to and compare the difference between 3D and stereo audio on the same screen, and then choose your preferred setting.

How can it not support VRR...I don't get it?

I mean I'm buzzing because now I can opt for a 1440p gaming monitor as I want an upgrade. I'm sure VRR must be coming right?

How are Sony so shit with this stuff. Its a bit of a joke at this point.
Probably a FreeSync vs HDMI VRR thing.

i think the OG xb1 uses HDMI 1.4 so doesn't support VRR. xbox one s and x use 2.0b which does support VRR

either sony are incompetent or lazy. maybe both. it's a joke that it took this long to get 1440p and they can't even do it with VRR.

I share the sentiment of others here. Series consoles were quite ready in terms of hardware and OS and but ps5 wasnt that ready. Despite people critics complaining about same os in xbox.

Echoes the HD-DVD vs Bluray disc wars. HD-DVD was feature rich at launch, took years for Sony to catch up with basic features that even standard DVDs already had.

I love my PS5 but Christ, software support is always two steps behind.

Please note: VRR on PS5 supports 1080p and 4K video output but not 1440p.

I came here to praise Sony supporting 1440p makes so much sense 1440p144hz monitors are a dime a dozen and go for pocket change these days.

Those 120fps modes will look better when not being upscaled all the way to 4K and/or if actually rendered at 1440p native.

Any dropped frames can be caught by VRR.......then i read the fine print!

Finally

And something that I never understood with consoles is why they dont render the game at a lower resolution so you can improve framerate

Let the player choose their own experience like on PC.

Want to play Bloodborne in 720p so you can have it at 60 fps? Ok

I have my PS5 on a 1080p monitor, and it looks excellent since it downsamples every game. Pristine image quality.

But I would rather play games at 120 fps 1080p

They actually tried native screen rendering on ps3. Was more of a ball ache than anything
