Retro EMULATORS for Xbox Series X|S / One - Download Links, NO MODDING, NO DEV-MODE

jshackles

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Do you think there's any chance of Citra or Cemu coming to retroarch ? (if they aren't already, if they are, my bad).
There is already a Citra (3DS) core for Retroarch. Cemu will never happen. Cemu is closed source, and last I checked there isn't a DirectX renderer that would be required for it to run on an Xbox. Wii U emulation itself is possible, eventually, but at this point we're more likely to see a Yuzu (Switch) core before we see a Cemu (or other Wii U) core.

Are you running it through Retroarch or using the standalone PCSX2 app?

it should run fine on both tbh. I think I saw a video a few months back of it running in Retroarch on the Series S

PCSX2 wiki says it's pretty cpu heavy tho... so maybe Retroarch will have drops

Something about playing OutRun 2006 on a Series X in 4K makes me really fucking happy.

"That moment" for me was after I set up the controls in Star Fox 64's training mode and then realized I was playing the first level with no lag, no jaggies and no compromises in high-res on real plug-and-play console and good controller. It looked so clean and controlled so well it felt like there had to have been some actual work done on the game, but there wasn't. The N64 blocky geometry is actually charming when you take away the insanely low textures, aliasing, 20fps and ailing control sticks. Not the first time I've tried to emulate this game, but this just happened to be by far the best, on a real game console, without putting any effort into it. I even used RetroPass to add a StarFox tile to the XB menu without having to use Retroarch like a file browser to launch it. INSANE.

It REALLY blew the lid off PSX games for me. They look so good, all the charm and 90's design philosophy with none of the jaggies. Pretty much kills PS3 as the best game console to play them on, I'll be playing dozens of games I never would have given the chance. With the hardware limitations out of the way, its apparent many of these games are better than today's new titles.

Through Retroarch.

You may want to give it a try with the standalone app. Mileage will vary by game but in general, it seems better.

Not PS2, but I can tell you from my own experience using Flycast, when I first tried it I completed Sonic's whole story in Sonic Adventure without even thinking about it. When I later installed Retroarch and tried the same game, it was unplayable in comparison. After seeing all the comments in this thread about success with PCSX2, I haven't even tried PS2 in retroarch yet. The app has done perfect in the few games I've tried with it.

After downloading the PCSX2 app, can you put your console region back from Brasil to whatever region you're in or does it has to stay on Brasil to work?

I need to try out more N64 stuff. The only game I tried so far is Mario 64 and it looked amazing. I had it in my head I was going to order a Super NT and Mega SG when they're back in stock, but the quality of emulation on Series X is making me rethink that.

N64 is a mixed bag. Some games have issues but are still worth playing. For example the original StarFox64 set number of players in Vs. mode by detecting controllers. Emulated, it always includes 4 players no matter what, even though I only have 3 controllers to connect to actually press A on the screen with. As a result I can't even test Vs. mode in SF until I buy another controller. The problem doesn't even exist unless you play multiplayer, but it seems every big game has some annoyance going on to remind you that you're emulating.

Goldeneye works fine single player and with 1-3 players, but with 4 players, screen 3 and 4 flicker badly. This is MADDENING. Project 64 on PC will solve a lot of this, but hey the point was all-in-one console emulation right?

It should be noted, the Parallel N64 core is relatively new and offers insane performance gains. Usually start with this core and if there's a problem try Mupen, which isn't as efficient but is more compatible with some games that don't like Parallel.

Swapping between the two to find the best fit on each game has really made me wish project64 existed as a core.

can you not change the number of connected controllers in the core options?

I looked for something like that and no. In fact to try and circumvent it, I mapped controllers to other ports, such as controller 3 being mapped to port 10 instead of port 3. No change. Project64 has a simple "controller is plugged in" tick box for each player.

With N64's high number of multiplayer games, control mapping headaches with its oddball controller, and issues straight up solved with Project64, I'm leaning towards getting some N64 USB controller adapters and calling it a day. Last night I discovered Rogue Squadron is totally broken and needs P64 as well.

The emulation on Xbox is still huge, I mean it's a viable way to easily and quickly launch a single player session of Starfox, or 4p Mario Kart with Xbox controllers -a game that won't require you to explain any controller changes. Having that stuff on your Xbox is ridiculous but it's not really acting to replace a real N64 the way Project64 does without the caveats.

This is specifically a N64 problem, the other systems are perfect, it just happens 64 is the one full of my favorite games, and they're waiting for a solution the most. Basically I want N64 without 20fps in a system I can drop at someones house, not my giant PC. Guess I just need a laptop or Steam Deck eventually 🤷‍♂️

I'm getting much better performance since reformatting my drive to NTFS. Still can't get Sega Rally on PS2 to run in full color, but playing Vice City again was nice!

Oh man, that PCSX2 from Brazil has horrific icon on my dashboard. Is there anyway to change that?

there are some new PCSX2 (Aether2sx) links that work
these 2 new uploads have a more reasonably looking icon
so if people who downloaded the old version previously and want a version that doesn't look completely fucked up and has a weird name, get these real fast and have a normal looking icon and name.

the same steps from the PS2 tutorial on the OP apply here too

I updated the Op to also show the icons and names of the different ones you can get currently

they are all the same version btw. no difference only the name and icons.
all of them are uwp-alpha-240-g12d458a71

CURRENTLY WORKING METHOD:
Set your Xbox region to Brazil and copy/paste one of the following product-id adresses into your Adress bar on the Xbox's web browser.
note that these often get deleted and some links might not work anymore (plz report if you tried one that didn't work anymore so I can delete them)

if you want to transfer your files really quickly from one install to the new one (which is what I just did, because fuck that weird ass icon and name) here's how you can super quickly do it using FileZilla
(look up the folder names of your emulator in the emulator first to know which folder is the correct one for you)

this also works for any other Emulator you might want to switch to a different version to btw... the folders will be different of course but the principle works either way

yall think the series x has the power potential for switch emulation? We just waiting on software optimization or what?

Also is there a nice all in one frontend that looks nice I can look into?

I think it could technically do it, but I don't think any Switch emulator currently has Direct X12 or 11 support, which is a must to work on Series X|S

Also is there a nice all in one frontend that looks nice I can look into?

I mean Retroarch will have you covered for almost all systems and that has a nice frontend with multiple different stlyes to chose from, like the PS3 esque Cross Media Bar,

I would only use it for stuff that doesn't have a standalone emulator tho because the standalone ones usually give you better performance and compatibility (that is ESPECIALLY true for PS2)

there is also "RetroPass" which you can get in Gamr13's app store. that is a frontend for Retroarch that makes your Retroarch library look like the Gamepass menu.
here is a tutorial I found about that

Thanks so much for this. Grabbed both just in case.

Do you not do direct links to them to keep them off the radar some? I was able to add them to my account via edge browser but couldn't queue them until I changed my Xbox region to Brazil. Just seems a bit easier than fiddling with the xbox browser

direct links don't work well with these. the easiest way is to copy paste them into the edge browser's URL bar. I tried linking them directly but that resulted in weird errors and/or blank pages...

I would bookmark the first post of this thread, I will always update these there too, I also simply use rhis thread to download them after posting the links lol...

back when I remade the OP to reflect the newest developments I experimented with this and ultimately found that this method just works the best.

and the Brazil thing I don't get either, maybe the XBL moderation over there is slower with removing them or something...

really there's a newer version? what are the improvements in that one? something vital or more a small incremental change?

I'll keep my eyes open for sure tho. If I find new links I'll download and try them out to see if a new version is available

I don't know the specific improvements I only know it exists. Was hoping someone else knew the improvements. I have decided to not discuss this subject at ALL in the discord server given the drama in recent months.

the drama in the emulation scene is so fucking weird ngl... like imagine being upset that someone reuploads a program you made that is used by 99.9% of its users to fucking play pirated games...

the fucking hypocrisy of that is amazing

Yeah and the way they act in the pcsx2 discord is hysterical.

"You must rip your games, or they won't work"

"You must rip your bios or it won't work"

lol who are they kidding? For such intelligent devs they seem to have their heads wayyyyyyyyyy up their ass. I know emu devs gotta cover their assess and that is totally fine, but it's different with the pcsx2 team. Can't believe these people are the ones preserving the greatest console ever made.

What is the proper way to have retroarch used with different profiles in xbox? I have installed it in retail mode with most of the dirs and games in an external usb drive. Is there an easy way to copy retroarch settings in another xbox profile?

if you did the complete USB drive setup all you really have to do is open Retroarch on the other profile and then change the directory settings again for that profile.
if everything is on your USB every profile has access to those folders.

I just played through Disaster Report, and are now starting the sequel (Raw Danger).

has anyone played these on original hardware? because I found that the sound mixing is really REALLY bad, and I wondered if this is an issue with PCSX2 or if it's just the way the game is.

every video I find on YouTube has the same bad audio mixing but many say they also play it on PCSX2, and the ones who don't say it also don't say it's og hardware, so I can't be sure if they aren't emulating as well.

here's an example from a YouTube longplay:

notice how loud the rain and wind sounds are, and how quiet the voiceover is.

it's like this in many other aspects in both games too not only in this sequence.
you will have weirdly quiet voices and then super loud ones in the same cutscene.
or in the first game there was a rescue helicopter that had a super quiet sound effect while the wind and voices were super loud.

it's super weird 😵‍💫

a sidenote, also weird little detail I found,
the first game uses Circle as the cancel button (which was not the standard back then) and the sequel then switched to the (back then) standard and uses Triangle as the cancel button...
just found that fascinating lol

also, if anyone wants to play these you should either play them entirely in Software Render mode or have a Software Render toggle shortcut bound to a button combo, as the game has graphical glitches with 2D elements which can make some menus illegible and/or completely blank

yes the guides should all still be up to date.

the most important development since this first took off is the discovery of how to fully utilize USB drives to store BIOS files and bigger games.

a tutorial for that can be found in the Retroarch setup video linked in the OP. all you need is a Windows PC and you can have basically an emulation USB drive that can be used instead of sending over stuff through FTP

Fantastic! Is there any upsides to have games on the internal drive? Faster loading perhaps?

not anymore no. emulators where loading is a factor should be kept at og loading speeds anyway to ensure compatibility, and the emulated og load times of a PS2 for example are way longer than what any decent USB drive can do.

I for example use an original PS4 HDD that I put into a USB enclosure.
(I instantly installed a 2TB drive when I got my PS4, and put the 500GB PS4 drive into the USB enclosure the 2TB drive came in)

Sounds great, I’ll play around with it when I get the time. Previously I only used a slim tiny USB stick, then there was a longer delay with black screen on some games compared to when I put them on the internal SSD.

I mean if your USB stick is REAAAALLLY slow this can still happen, but with any decent modern one it shouldn't

I looked up some reviews and apparently the terrible sound mixing is not the emulator's fault 😵‍💫 well at least now I know I don't have to troubleshoot

currently you can get AM2R (Another Metroid 2 Remake) and all the Whitehead Sonic ports through these links

for the Sonic ports you will need to provide a file yourself to actually use them. this file is included in the mobile versions of the games.

so you can't just download and play them due to copyright reasons of course.

AM2R being a fan game is completely playable with this simple Download tho
the game was a big buggy last time I played it

EITHER WAY
IF YOU DOWNLOAD EITHER OF THEM, INSTANTLY START THEM AT LEAST ONCE TO ACTIVATE YOUR LICENSE TO USE THEM AFTER THEY HAVE BEEN TAKEN OFF OF THE STORE

you have to click on them in your Xbox's browser. if that doesn't work try rebooting your console.

the links should work, I always try the links I post right before posting them

Open Lara (open source Tomb Raider engine) is now also available

this one seems to have just been uploaded so this can take a few hours to work

this also needs files from an original Tomb Raider copy to work. it might come with a demo level, some versions of Open Lara do at least.

I have no idea how to make this work. Console region on Brazil, even when combined with a burner account with its region set to Brazil and all I get are empty store pages, on both AetherSX2 versions.

Edit: I have the feeling they're geo-locating my IP address. I'll try to use a Brazilian proxy, then force an install through apps.microsoft.com.

there are 3 versions, the one with the weird ass icon and the 2 normal looking ones.
it could be that the normal looking ones were deleted, this can happen and is the reason that weird looking and named one exists, to be more undercover.

if the links don't work when the console region is set to Brazil then they were most likely deleted. if so I'll take them out of the OP

Yeah only BrHueHue2.0 seems to work here.
