Where do we draw the line in "preserving" Nintendo Switch games?

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 hasn't even been out for weeks and is always leaked and being emulated on PC and Steam Decks.

Obviously I'm not referring to legitimate preservation, which has become the alternative "P-word" to justify emulating Switch games so close to a game release.

It's one thing to ignore this and condone it, but it doesn't make it right if we do nothing.

Maybe I'm just too naive(though Im also playing devil's advocate the find where your opinion is with this)

Do we tell ourselves everyone is equally purchasing the games, support the developer, they emulate?

There will always be piracy, be it for emulation or otherwise. I can't say I'm losing any sleep over it and it's certainly not our job as gamers to tell others what they should or should not do with their internet connections. I say let the interested parties worry about it, though I have a feeling they already make piles of money and piracy is not even making a dent.

There have been people scattered in threads on here that have basically said they are pirating switch games.

Emulating it for higher fidelity is a non-issue to my mind. If you've got the hardware and software to make it happen, go right ahead.

That's the 'preservation' part, which is arguably a disingenous term to use given that the console has yet to reach its end-of-life.

The actual issue is the implied piracy, same as it always has been. There's no reason to conflate the two.

eh there's no line in my eyes
you have to remember that this piracy hardly makes a dent in nintendos sales likely due to the switch being far harder to hack than older Nintendo systems (and most switch owners likely don't have PCs strong enough to emulate nintendo systems)

This is the defense that I was hoping someone would say and the reason for this thread. We preserve games when: software is no longer sold, hard to obtain, original hardware obsolete, end-of-life as you say.

I'm not ignorant to the Switch's graphical capabilities but justifying pirating on bases of "Nintendo hardware suck" is not preserving. Is it?

If Nintendo wanted to re-release Pokemon games in the form of a collection, no one would buy it.
ROMs have single-handedly tarnished the potential selling of any Legacy handheld games. it 100% makes a dent in their sales. that alone also decides what IPs should continue.
They cant make remasters and remakes as much as Sony when they are too busy trying to hold on to their IPs constantly getting pirated.
The switch is unfortunately not hard to hack, and Switch games are becoming more accessible to obtain.

Preservation doesn’t mean everyone gets the rims for free. A game company can donate their code to a preservation society with out being accessible to the public.

Right. Right now it's just improving your experience, and you don't need piracy to do that.

I think Nintendo needs to just start releasing ports for PC officially, while I own a switch 60FPS and no slow down is a god send for games like xenoblade and officially available would purchase it in a heartbeat.

Nintendo should've went third party years ago. They refuse to keep up with the competition in terms of hardware, UI, online infrastructures etc

They're too damn stubborn to ever do so though

I'd buy up their games on my Series X or PC in a heartbeat

If I go pay money for the code I should be able to run it on whatever the fuck I want.

That’s the line, it’s very easy to understand. No don’t steal software. Yes, run software you legally acquire on whatever you want.
You are the diminishing majority: the purchasing consumer, that's a good thing(that you still purchase) bad that many are stealing.
However, you dismantle the tradition within Home video console gaming in the exclusive titles by wanting to play it on any hardware.
This alone starts another discussion on the "Fate of Exclusive games". Why make exclusive game to consoles if gamers don't care what hardware it made for?

This. I'm going to buy Xenoblade Chronicles 3, rip it to my external hard drive that's hooked up to my modded Nintendo Switch, and then play it on my PC. If Nintendo would put it on Steam I'd just buy it there instead. But Nintendo won't do that because they won't pay Valve's fees of up to 30%.

Riiiiight. More like, "well, someone bought the game, therefore the rest of us should be allowed to pirate the game".

Do you guys really think everyone is that dumb? The vast majority of people playing on PC aren't going out to purchase an unused copy for Swith first.

I think it's great having those emulators available and receiving so much support for the devs. When I bought SMT V I decided to try it on the emulator, since the native Switch version could look and run better.

I was so impressed, it almost looked like a different game. All the details could shine thanks to the bump in resolution, and controlling the game at 60fps was something else too.

Can't think of a better way of preserving those titles.

I don't care about piracy, to each their own. I pirated a lot in the past when I had no money, and I could understand people doing it for that reason. Where's the harm when those people weren't going to buy the game anyways?

Why specifically switch games what about pc ? Xbox or PlayStation ?

Pretty easy question owning the game you’re able to run the code wherever you want. 🤷‍♂️

Xbox and Playstation are already bringing their games to PC. It's awesome and I wholeheartedly support it

Nintendo had the right idea with the eshop years ago. but it's a shame they currently want to hide titles like OoT and Majoras Mask behind a monthly paywall. They also historically have problematic account systems which lead to forcing their fanbase to repurchase the same classics once every generation

I want Nintendo to improve. I've been a fan since I was three years old. It doesn't mean I'm going to pretend they're without their shortcomings

The point of exclusives is to funnel money into console manufacturers because they hardly make anything, or take a loss, on hardware sales.

If you’re legally buying the game, Nintendo and Monolith get paid.

No, that’s not what I’m saying at all. I’m interested in this game, but I haven’t gone out and torrented it or something which I’m sure I could easily do, if I get the time to put into it I’ll buy it. But also, I don’t see any ethical or legal issue whatsoever if I decide to play it on my gaming PC or Steam Deck, both of which can apparently give me a better experience than my half decade old launch day Switch…which I could easily hack and pirate everything on, but guess what? It still only runs the latest firmware and I’ve never pirated a game on it.

Do you guys really think everyone is that dumb? The vast majority of people playing on PC aren't going out to purchase an unused copy for Swith first.
I think the only dumb people are those who don’t realize that yes, some people will just pirate anything but there are others who are perfectly ethical and moral who don’t want to run things on antiquated hardware, and there’s a perfectly legal and ethical solution for that where developers still get paid for their work.

"diminishing majority" holy shit, do you actually think piracy is that mainstream???
My brother in christ, switch is still making record sales and the games are still selling better on switch than any other platform.

Companies themselves are realizing this which is why Microsoft is submerged inside the PC pool and Sony's getting used to the waters
Gamers haven't cared for what hardware it's been made for since the One./PS4 era because that's when all console hardware become more homogenized. It's really all the same shit but slightly weaker/stronger now. If companies don't care enough to make more specialized hardware for their consoles..... Why should we?

I have friends who emulate Switch. They all pirate the games. It’s obviously not right but I don’t care tbh, if they talk about the games then it could be PR, in a way.

For older games it’s even less of an issue. I think it’s great that young people want to play old games. And I’ve ripped most of my old floppies for personal preservation since my Amiga floppies are dying, so I know it’s a lot of work to do it legally. It’s naive to think everybody would do that. And imagine the work needed to rip your own ROM files for big MAME filesets lol

Maybe Switch is too new for this line of thought though. And for a game like XB3 that was just released?… Hmmmm

People really like "preserving" Nintendo games. Nintendo games are usually the most "preserved" games on every "preservation" site. It's just one of those things. Nintendo sells enough copies to offset the "preservation efforts" of "concerned gamers".
There aren't many PS4 emulators, and why would we need to "preserve" microsoft games when they're all already on PC anyways with the files out in the open for you to do with as you please?

What I wrote holds for all generations of games. Nintendo games always top pirate sites. Not sure if you're serious though because PC game preservation is an active segment of the preservation community. People who say they are downloading roms for "preservation" are just pirating them.

Lol, you're really out of the loop with how much Nintendo's old-ass ports are selling. Piracy hardly makes a dent in sales for a company with an audience that's so consolidated as Nintendo's. Believe me, if someone pirates a game they wouldn't be willing to buy it anyway.

Also, it's pretty stupid to conflate emulation with piracy and it should honestly be warranted a warning at the very least. I would never play games on switch due to how atrocious they look, but give me them on PC at 60fps and with fidelity mods and I'm all in.

If I'm going to be playing a Switch game at home I'm going to emulate it so it doesn't look and run like shit.

If I'm playing it on the go I'll take my lite with me.

Your whole stance is naïve and anti-consumer. Why are you simping so hard for a billion dollar company.

Retro game compilations are not simply collections of roms. As such, the existence or lack of roms doesn't make a difference. The appeal of these complications is convenience, availability on new platforms, ease of access, quality of life improvements, graphical enhancements, goodies and bonus features. If a company just dumps a bunch of 30 year old roms, they deserve backlash because it shows laziness, greed, lack of business sense and disrespect towards the consumer. With such huge margins this inudsrty owes more to the players. You don't re-release a classic movie on VHS. You do it on 4k. Same applies here. You either get it or you don't.
