Video: Using PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii in 2022

not that interesting for someone who used those consoles extensively in 2020 and 2021, but from my experience the 360 is still very well supported despite its age. The Wii and PS3's true potential are unlocked when you softmod them.

all 3 consoles are legendary though and have their place in gaming. 360 is the best introduction to gaming i could ever have gotten

I still play Wii games on the WiiU, 360 games on the Series X, and have my PS3 hooked up. There are just so many awesome games from that generation! The PS3 is how I still play the Sly Cooper, Ratchet and Clank, and inFamous games. I was hoping for at least some remasters, but the PSN cloud came out and it just doesn’t do it for me.

I regularly use the Wii for retro gaming, moreso than the later Nintendo systems. And it was yesterday or so that I used my 360 to play some more Sonic Unleashed...don't get why it seems like a novelty to fire up old systems in 2022

I'm in and out of a Sands of Time playthrough on mine. Still a great machine despite how painful it is to find and redownload digital purchases.
For me it’s the load times. I have been tempted to pop in an SSD to see if it would do anything special. I’ve seen some contradicting info online about what it would do.

It won't make as much of a difference as you might hope. I put a Crucial MX500 in my PS3 when the hard drive crashed and the main difference I see is in installs and big data transfers. In general I only see marginal improvements in load times, but I swear textures load faster. At the end of the day the PS3's HDD interface is still SATA 1 so bandwidth is constrained. The improvements are probably more related to faster seek times for the disk than actual data throughput.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
I didn't like that generation much either, fortunately the portables made it up.

I mean, the best original game that came out for me that period was just Catherine and Bayonetta.

I should get my PS3 at some point next week (my mom is moving and sent me some boxes with old shit I still had at her house). I'm actually looking forward to hooking it up and reliving some old memories, play some Killzone or Infamous 2 and other games which aren't available on modern platforms.

Have to disagree with others in this thread, I really enjoyed that gen. It introduces a ton of cool new franchises and the whole GAAS crap didn't dominate gaming as much back then.

I enjoyed that generation as well. But it is also the generation that gave rise to MTX and GAAS crap on consoles as developers were trying to figure out how to keep monetizing games after the initial sale. GAAS money printer GTA Online was born there and there were plenty of MMO and free to play games during that generation as well. It also had online only games like MAG sold at regular price where people completely lost the ability to play the game and any purchased DLC when servers went offline.

I look back fondly on the generation as a whole, but it had its fair share of GAAS.

Sony actually REMOVED PS3 games when they switched from PSNOW to PSPLUS. I'm disappointed in that regard.

Currently playing Nier on the triple.

Journos buried and memory-holed a lot of decent games in that gen that fairly few even bothered to play or lend a legitimate chance to this day. Their verdicts lead to low prints and generated scarcity of the more interesting games from that generation. No wonder some go around saying it was a poor generation on that regard. Not to mention some Japanese games unjustly didn't get a physical release or localized.

Its true that it introduced the needlessly competitively, high development budgets and monetization plague we see today though. However, it looks almost benign in comparison to the modern practices.

Wait, what. Which games did they remove?

I am playing my PS triple right now ^^

Wait…seriously?!? I thought the whole point of the new service was to stream PS3 games to the newer consoles. Either way, I’m glad I bought a new PS3 when all those Covid checks went out.

I've plugged my 360e back in so I can play Afterburner Climax and Outrun Online again, the only problem I found was actually finding what you owned through the download list, which was a pain.
PS3 I couldn't use my PSN password for some strange reason, even though I know it's correct as I use it on my PS4 Pro and PS5.
Wii played games still but everything online seem to be switched off now.

Xbox 360 and Wii are still great.

It's just shit that it' impossible to put a SSD on vanilla X360. Wii could have a custom firmware doing away with the separate iOS and replace the Wii Store now that it's closed up with something better.

PS3 I don't know.
wii is how. It's my least favorite Nintendo console next to the virtual boy.
it's actually cool, if you play Gamecube games and use homebrew.

Currently going through MGS3 and ordered a PS3 on eBay a few days ago so I can play Guns of the Patriots, and catch up on other games I missed at the time. I’m excited.

Do you have 2FA on for your PSN account? If so, you will need to go onto PlayStation’s website and create a specific PS3 key to log in. Once you do that, save it, so you don’t need to put it in each time.

I'm having a crazy time with a PS3 Slim.

CMOS died, so it's a CR2032 battery and I go in to replace it... I take apart the whole damn console as the ifixit guide says, which is kinda insane to get to a battery. disassemble the bluray drive and all... I get to the part where the battery is and...

In this specific model (not the first slim revisions, I didn't find pictures of that board revision online) instead of having a cutout for the battery, I have to take the metal plates apart as well, replace thermal paste and all, just to change a fucking battery that every 7-10 years has to be replaced anyway. I was beyond pissed, and to this day it's sitting on my sofa. It pisses me off just looking at it. (I have thermal paste I just didn't feel like doing that after spending an hour taking it apart already. Shit design.

Without the CMOS battery the console doesn't boot properly so it's a brick.

Jesus what a shitshow.

I debated getting the slim because I love the design, but figured those models would be too old and more susceptible to issues. Decided to get a super slim for a decent price that looks almost new and hoping for the best.

I'll try that, thanks 👍

My ps3 is 14 years old and boots just fine, is the OG model different?
I have no idea, but they all have the CMOS limitation in place.

Some consoles will stop booting without a CMOS battery and give an error. I'm not sure why, but this specific console seems like it's in a middle of an update. Reaches over half the install then gives out an error. Perhaps it needs the CMOS to store some key. It's either that, hdd or wifi/bluetooth. hdd is fine, and the controllers sync so BT is working, that leaves CMOS. I also originally decided that was the easiest to troubleshoot.

Usually when CMOS dies, console will boot and connect to servers enabling Bluray games to run? but won't boot digital games. If it can't connect to server (if they ever turn servers off this will be a problem) it won't even run physical games.

It's a good console to crack asap.

They're very similar I think.

But I also like the super slim. At least replacing the HDD is as easy as it comes and it accepts Sata SSD.

What a disgusting youtuber, absolutely annoying. "Hey I don't know about video games but here I am talking stupid things that I have no idea about but you will see my video because I am popular".

-"Go Faster" - It can't go faster you dumb piece of shit, that console came out like 17 years ago.
- The entire video it's a complete waste of time..... Do old consoles works? Yeah, they work. (Still have my PS3)

Ya they removed A LOT of the classic fun games. MGS4, some of the god of wars, etc.

Yeah it definitely wasn't without issues and it was also the beginning of a lot of stuff I don't like about current gaming (microtransactions, GaaS, the "let's release unfinished and just patch it later" mentality, etc).
But I liked the gen itself, and because it was the beginning of many of those things it also meant that a lot of them didn't get really bad until the final years of those consoles.

Mainly though, visually it felt like a really big step up from the previous gen, it also made things like multiplayer easier and more streamlined on consoles and it also introduced a lot of cool new IP like Uncharted, Dead Space, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Gears of War, Bioshock, Dark Souls, Assassins Creed, The Last of Us, Left 4 Dead, Portal, Dragons Dogma, Infamous, etc

It's like all big publishers and devs were eager to introduce new franchises and ideas while I feel like these days most of them prefer to push their established IP. Look at some studios like Naughty Dog, they went from introducing 2 new IP's on ps3, to focusing entirely on sequels on the Ps4. Now we are closing in on 2 years of Ps5 and the only confirmed projects from them are TLOU1 again and a TLOU standalone multiplayer game.

I still use Wii as a Gamecube but I don't think playing old games is a great indication. Especially because I own a launch Gamecube, Wii just saved me from having to get the rare component cables for it.

Mine is modded and has a lot of games on it, but many of these games I prefer to emulate anyway. So I can play NSMB with a real controller instead of a cramped sideways wiimote and press a button like R to spin jump instead of waggle.

Most of the Wii games I actually liked could have just been a normal GC game instead and I'd have liked it better lol.

EDIT: Except Resident Evil 4, Wii is definitive version.
