Astra Superstars; and other legit fun 2D fighting games everyone forgot existed

Because of Street Fighter...everyone needed to get a 2D fighting game into the market. It was basically the hottest genre for almost the entirety of the 90s when it came to the arcades...which means a metric crap ton of games were made and released.

Which ALSO means a ton of really legit amazing games were basically forgotten about / never noticed because the market was just straight up oversaturated...like Astra Superstars

It's the pseudo sequel / spiritual successor to Waku Waku 7 on the Neo Geo...another legit and rarely mentioned 2D fighting game. Except here...you fly around in the air while you fight. A VERY weird mechanic but once you get the hang of it it feels like second nature and damn do you realize what a straight up hidden gem this one is.

But that got me thinking GAF...I love hearing your opinions. Slept on 2D fighting games? Any era...they just gotta be good and deep cut status. Whatcha got?

I'd say The Rumble Fish series was slept on... well, it was up until about a month ago when current-gen ports were randomly announced!

Slap Happy Rhythm Busters for PS1 is a Japan-only 2D fighter (with 3D cel-shaded characters) that isn't very well-known.

Weirdly I have a large dislike for The Rumble Fish

Astra Superstars was actually a sequel to Sunsoft’s Galaxy Fight on Neo Geo. Made by the same team as Waku Waku 7 of course.

Played this a lot with my friend back in the end of the 90’s, was the reason for getting an Action Replay with the 4 meg additional ram.
