A sense of quality? (Packaging and Build Quality)

PS5 is built okay. The duel sense feels like a cheap game third party controller. XSX is the best built console I ever owned and the controllers are built well. The switch is well built, but the dock is cheeeeeap. PS2 2nd best built console I ever owned. It and the XSX surviving nuclear wars. Solid ass consoles. XSX packaging is also superb, felt like I was opening pandoras box...the ps5 I dont even remember how it was packaged which I guess means it was just standard.

XSXunboxing_pic_2.jpg
This was some premium ass packaging.
The contrast between this and the Series S was astronomical.
Then you open the PS5 box..........what the fuck happened here?
I know im only gonna experience this once so who gives a fuck.........but i give a fuck!

And the console build quality.
Yeah the XSX is surviving a nuclear blast for sure, that thing is solid as fuck.

The quality of the DualSense runs circles around the Xbox Series controllers.

But yes, the packaging in the actual box was better for Series X. I guess that's exciting.
Funny I have the exact opposite feel.
Feature set, no one can deny the DualSense, I got one and dont even own a PS5. (For when visiting my neighbor who only has one and for PC games that have DS support "for the experience" i usually go back to a Series controller after the novelty runs out).

But build quality and feel, the Series controller takes it.
The DualSense feels too light, as if its a toy, it might just be my eneloops but Series controllers have a heft to them that makes them feel more expensive than their feature set can cash.

No it hasn’t.
Yes, 360 and One had better/stronger rumble. One was more dynamic to what was happening on screen.

Xbox series controller $50 + charge pack $25. ~30 hours of playtime.

PlayStation dual sense is $70, with around 4-5 hours of heavy haptics. And 10-12 haptics off.

Switch pro controller $60, ~40 hour battery life.

Rumble with 360 and Xbox One was no better or worse than DualShock except for games that took advantage of the impulse triggers with Xbox One such as Forza. And the Xbox Series controller at MSRP starts at $60, not $50. Regardless, DualSense haptics is superior to rumble even in games that don't utilize it specifically. But yes, the battery life could certainly be better.

My favorite work from Sony is still the original PS2 and the original PSP in terms of looks, software UI and branding. I actually still kept the packaging from both devices. Sony's work after the original PS3 has all been downhill. Recently they're doing the same shit that Nintendo was doing with the Wii U, those horrible cyber hospital like themes, ass.

Not surprised at all by the cheap packaging, their philosophies are just different these days from not only the Playstation brand, but their electronics entirely.

I think the DualSense feels pretty premium, not ultra premium but definitely more than let's the Xbox 360 controller. Or God forbid the PS3 controller that feels like a cheap Chinese toy you bought for 5 bucks over a shady eBayer.

The boxing, didn't notice anything particular, then again I'm not buying Apple nor Samsung products. I just unpacked the console and went on to connect it and play with it.

The PS5 packaging is great. The console is well protected with almost no plastic or glue in the packaging. All of it can go straight into recycling without much sorting. The console is an abomination. Way too big. The plastic shell feels fragile during removal when you want to access the SSD. The ergonomics of Dualsense are fine. The plastic feels a little weak because it creaks whenever you grip it tightly.

"Feels premium" has been overused to the point that I have no clue what is meant anymore. The best I can figure is that its being used as a synonym for heavy which is kinda ironic since many actual premium products are actually light.

It's not just about materials, its about the curation of the entire experience. The unboxing is just the first impression but first impressions matter non the less, then you got the ease of setup and then after that powering on for the first time. A premium experience makes you feel like more thought and care put into it. It's like the difference between going to a good restaurant where the staff only come to the table a couple of times compared to going to a really good restaurant where you feel like the staff are bending over backwards to make your experience as special as possible by doing things like keeping your glass topped up or the attentive staff noticing the small social cues people give off and addressing them before you have to signal or call to them to come to the table. Even if the food is exactly the same at both restaurants you will come away from the really good restaurant with a better feeling and it will be more memorable than the one that is just good.

Sony should be embarrassed by the egg carton box they package the PS5 in

I really do wonder what the price difference is between these two packaging method, because although the xsx look a lot better its only using foam instead of cardboard and foam and cardboard are about the same price. I guess the sony packaging designer was not very creative.
I had a great time unpacking the ps5.
The packaging is protective and that's what matters.
At least is wastes less plastic

What the fuck is wrong with people wanting "premium packaging" as in create much more waste than necessary? That is simply idiotic....

There`s nothing better than full paper packaging that you can immediately crumble into nothing and dispose of without having to separate 5 kinds of "premium-foam".....
As long as it gets the job done packaging should always be as cheap and material saving as possible.

And the build quality of the console itself and the peripherals is absolutely fine.

Can we at least all agree that glossy consoles should be outlawed?
The black gloss on the Ps5 looks dreadful and I'm afraid to even tickle it with a feather duster for fear of scratches.

I had a premium feel opening the PS5 while I didn’t with the PS4. But I think it was the console and controller themselves, not the packaging. I think the packaging was exactly the same level as the PS4, so not sure why you felt different

I had the opposite. I bought the PS4 Shadowfall and camera launch bundle and the packaging felt neatly packed and premium. The PS5 didn't feel premium but it had less waste at least. I'm not sitting here thinking about the 5 minutes years ago where I pulled something out of a box though so who cares honestly.

It's part of their Green Management Plan to eliminate plastics from their packaging and it's a good thing:

No it isn’t. My launch Dualshock 4 lasted the entire generation, I just had to replace the analogue sticks. Battery was absolutely fine. Controllers are built so shittily overall now that the thing is more likely to fall apart years before you’d have to worry about battery degradation.
ser, you must be a sony fan. the vibration in the all xbox controllers except xbox series s/x has been better than playstations, this time sony copied the switch.

Yeah, when I opened the PS5 box, I was like: THE HELL?! The xbox box was SO MUCH better. At least mine doesn't have a coil while... no, wait :D

I don't give a shit about the packaging, it's a pure waste, I prefer to pay for the content, not the container which will collect dust or finish in a trash can. Sense of quality of what ? That's bullshit, I want quality, not a sense.
If you want a sense, there's a dual sense inside the box.
I guess you have a iphone, it's typical of an apple user.

PS5 plastics is perfectly fine and great, I don't know what's wrong with you, you're not buying a Rolls-Royce man. The important is inside and it's top.

This. Who gives a shit about the packaging? I don't flop out my dick and bust a nut over the quality of the packaging of any electrical device.

As long as it's secure and works then that's all I care about.

Yeah, the box and packaging layout definitely struck me as cheap. I wonder if the new lighter revision will redesign any of the packaging.

The controller, though better than any PS4 controller on build quality afaik, still had some issues too, my PS systems are the only ones where the thumbsticks get deep grooves in the stick part from regular light use, my years old wii u and 360 gamepads haven't done this, must be plastics choice. And it also wasn't too long before I found where a light pressure creates a creak, though it was initially much better than any PS4 controller I've had.

Build quality on the console itself I think is fine enough, apart from the fiddly stand which easily comes off if you try to move it around in horizontal mode.

Xbox is THE green console. Ba dum tisss 😁

But, if you seriously want to talk enviromental impact...

I'm sure if Sony really wanted to save on excess materials they could have come up with a console design that doesn't need a bolt on stand. Also, the larger size and weight of the console is going to give it a larger carbon footprint than Series X from a shipping point of view.

A lot of people keep the packaging too, preferable if you are a collector and also second hand stuff sells way better if it's in the original packaging.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
dualsense feels premium though.
And who gives a shit on the console built i just care the build quality of the inside.

So far my PS5 is running quiet and no issue as well.
Rather have this than a premium built but half ass components.

Haptic feedback and adaptive triggers are game changing. The Series controller feels like cheap plastic with its loudly clicking buttons and annoying bubble face buttons. Not to mention still using AA batteries in a controller in 2022 should be illegal.

But yes, the packaging in the actual box was better for Series X. I guess that's exciting.
AA batteries are superior to the garbage in the Dual Sense.

I use Eneloops in my Xbox pad and it lasts me 1-2 weeks before recharging.

Apple is the company that has always put effort in the experience people have from when they first open the box. Microsoft now pretty much does theirs exactly the same way Apple has been doing for ages but it's not with everything (e.g. Microsoft mouse that come in those stupid plastic hard to open packages). As for Sony, outside of PS5, it has been standard affair, nothing special. The first time experience of opening the PS5 wasn't elegant, that is for sure. lol.

if i recall correctly, Sony themselves stated it was an environmental decision, though i believe cost savings played a larger roll. I accidently ripped my box when pulling the inner box out.

I like to keep my console boxes, particularly after i store them away in the attic of death.

edit: seems i was beat to it multiple times already, including a link.

if everyone argues like this, we would still be in the stone age.
there was a time, when people found it acceptable to play a game with with weird joysticks or with a num-pad.
back then my uncle said, dont complain, this is how had something to play.
sure, next time, a console maker should wrap their console in newspaper to deliver it to you, while apple/samsung delivers premium stuff to other customers.

this matters too.

Hmmm… who was that guy that got banned in the Next gen-speculation thread after going on about the PS5 vs Series X packaging?

Dualsense is very premium feeling compared to my Series X controller. I just find the Series X controller feels like a kids toy.

Click clack click ugh
first time i played a game with an xbox1x controller, i thought the controller was broken... i could hear the analog stick over the game's audio.

ending up replacing the controller via warranty due to sticky triggers. and the replacement controller had connection issues. 3rd controller was fine (analog stick was still loud though).
then the console started making weird sounds.

got a lemon i guess. made me weary about xbox though.

Perhaps. The Elite 2 has been trash from a reliability perspective.

I can say that so far my base Series X controller has been solid except for the left stick getting looser at center.
