Just beat Strider (Capcom arcade 1989) for the first time and it's better than most games today

You can tell someone was wronged by something this gen when they bring up an old mediocre game and say it's better than "most" games today.

OP did you get upset paying $70 for TLOU part 1? Did you're Switch brick? Did you think Game Pass is illegal or Jim Ryan is a criminal? Did you buy Saints Row? Tell us what made up create this thread OP.

The original Strider is one of the best games ever made, I don’t care what anyone has to say about it. You disagree? You are a Fn liar. Thank you OP for recognizing.
You need to be a truly seasoned gamers like us to recognise such amazing games.

Mediocre? The reason I picked this game up is because from what I've read it was widely considered one of the best arcade games ever.

It delivered.

Wow, I just got rejected again. How cruel.
I still love you though…shall I direct you to my recent apology thread? Listen…I’m a dick on these forums….I accept that. But don’t feel rejected. If I didn’t care what you had to say I would ignore you, but I didn’t, sooooo 😊

Kind of weird snes never got a port but I guess it did come out way before the aces release.

Some weird trivia .. but snes got a game that was just like strider from horisoft and atlas called run saber. I mean the guy controls and looks a lot like strider. Animations are the same and everything but it’s also got some Metroid thrown in. Pretty cool and you should check it out if you liked strider.

has been asked to post in 'Grounded' mode.
This should be modernized in 3D with a few more mechanics it would be a GOTY contender

This 1989 Capcom game is so good you forget what era the game is when you're playing it, and I played it for the first time in 2022.

Just amazing pixel art and gameplay. Some great scan lines too.

I tried the newer Strider (2014) after and it was easy and boring in comparison.

I don’t think it’s one of the best games ever, but It’s one Of the best arcade side-scrollers, no doubt. Artistically, it still looks great, but dated (i don’t mean that as an insult). Back when it was new though, it made jaws drop!

100% agree with the OP.
Strider 1 dumps on most AAA games of today and 100% of the wannabe Genesis/SNES 2D indie crap that floods every storefront.

The 2014 Strider was an embarrassment - just terrible.
I would highly recommend checking out Strider 2 for the PS1. Its a worthy follow up. Just dont rape the continue button - try to actually play the game with skill. It has some amazing bosses battles if you play it shmup style (go for a 1CC) and dont force yourself to rely on the unlimited continues.

I mean, it's less than 10 minutes, but it's alright.

The game was praised for the graphics, but the gameplay is and will always be very stiff. It was a graphical show case, but poorly designed. Much better Capcom efforts, now to be fair in 1989 this would have blown people away. I still appreciate the art, back grounds and the interesting world they built. But let's be honest, it doesn't play great. However, completing this game legitimately is an achievement in itself. The game was a pioneer and deserves our respect even 33 years later.

I was pretty disappointed with the game on Genesis, way too short and not that hard (considering how much it cost). Yeah all games were short back then (except for RPGs), but Strider more so. Ghouls n Ghosts was a better game in the arcade and on the Genesis (as far as early capcom 16 bit games go).

Okay now go play Osman. If you haven't heard of it, it's a spiritual successor to the original arcade Strider, and was made by a lot of the same team including the director. Instead of a cyber ninja fighting in a futuristic Soviet Union, your martial artist in an Arabian cyberpunk setting.

It came out in '96, but never got any kind of home release, but they just announced it's finally set for one next year. But I'm happy it's available through Mame in the meantime.

Unpopular opinion but I liked the NES Strider better than the Arcade/Genesis version. I used to play it a lot along with Bionic Commando. It had a pretty cool story too. I found out couple years ago the NES version was a close adaptation of the Manga. If they were to reboot Strider I hope it's based of the Manga/NES version.
I thought this intro was so cool as a kid.

I think the major difference is that it wasn't a major quarter eater and as such people were able to beat it with relatively low cost. From a comparative standpoint all the other releases that year had a much much higher scope of difficulty.

Capcom during the 8bit and 16bit era was by far the best publisher, only rivaled by Nintendo. even the really good Konami was far behind them imo

Capcom was great back then, but to say Konami was far behind is stretching it, if only because Konami had by far better NES sound engines than Capcom.

Old arcade games are absolutely fascinating to revisit. The design philosophies behind arcade games were almost completely the opposite of games today.

No 30 minute tutorials. no hand holding. No in depth leveling or gear crafting. Just a poorly illustrated faded out instruction panel on the bezel of an arcade machine cabinet if you were lucky.

Arcade games were designed to let you get to the good parts almost immediately. They challenged you just enough to keep you wanting to put money in without being so hard that you didn't want to play anymore.

The only thing that microtransactions bought you back in the day were your actual skills improving through another round, and not some arbitrary level or gear.

Ninja + plasma sword + crazy evil Russian cyborgs + mechanical gorillas + killer ballerinas

There's so much creativity in just one game it just blows my mind. Game designers from that era are just from a different plane of existence.

Used to play that all the time and get stuck in the same spot every time. Never could figure it out.

Strider was good but really short. Strider 2 was good but far too easy, even if you didn't abuse the special.

The 2014 game was actually legit. A metroidvania with very good gameplay, Played like Strider still, but with lots of added stuff. I remember liking it when it came out, then kind of put it away until I revisited it much later and beat the entire game. Its not a bad game at all.

I'm with you OP, some of those action/arcade games beat modern games to a pulp in terms of actual fun.

I got quite hooked to Alien Soldier on the Genesis some time ago. Give it a try if you are up for more arcade-like kind of challenge, game's hard but also very rewarding and fun as fuck.
