Splatoon 3 sells 3.45m in Japan at launch (Bigger than ACNH launch)

Let's not get carried away, Splatoon 1 sold 4.95 million and Splatoon 2 has sold 13.30 million so 15 to 20 million would be great and grow the IP.
My thoughts exactly 20 million would be awesome, but you never know on the Switch, pretty sure it will be the franchises biggest seller so far.

No but they need wave race, F-Zero, Starfox and Arms.

Where the fuck is Metroid Prime 4 ?
I would like all of those games, but in all honesty it's very debatable to weather or not Nintendo need them, none of them are big sellers.

Completely agree.

Their business decisions are endlessly baffling. And it’s not just standard corporate greed, also incompetence. Their online infrastructure, eShop setup, neglect of certain IPs. The list goes on.

But, in terms of video game mechanics, the actual nuts and bolts of designing an enjoyable gaming loop; they’re untouchable . I think vintage Blizzard came closest, but they’ve dissolved away.

There was a fascinating article on how Splatoon was pitched. Whereas a Western AAA title would have hundreds of pages of graphical images and lore, setting out the story and ‘world’, Splatoon was pitched on half a side of A4. A few blocks were drawn out, you move a character through the blocks to reload. The idea was to find a way to make every moment of shooter gameplay matter, rather than just the combat. It was approved and they went and made a game around that basic idea.

They’re brilliant at what they do.
Their business decisions are not baffling, it's just when the core try to tell people how to do things they only think about their own individual wants and needs, the masses will have very little issue with any of Nintendo's business decisions, many armchair videogame industry experts out there, but not many with the slightest clue outside of the core market.

God i hate how you really have to watch what you say in Switch threads or the mods come down hard. All my 9 warning points over the years have been in Switch threads.
I really want to say something about Switch software sales but i just know it will be taken the wrong way and i'll get in trouble lol.:messenger_tears_of_joy:
Say it pussy, say itttttt

Or even the classic Switch thread.... I don't know how many times it will need to be demonstrated that' it's only a core vocal minority claiming to speak for everyone, and claiming to understand the whole videogame market.

PSA to everyone loving Splatoon with gyro control.

Buy Neon White on Switch. On the short list for GOTY. Great gyro. Great level design. Great OST
Not a huge fan of the Gyro controls, although I do agree they are well implemented, just prefer a more traditional control method, awesome you have a choice though, and it's pretty easy to switch between the two. :)

Nintendo getting their first taste of GAAS titles.

How it can snowball into something huge. Hopefully they can reclaim their throne as kids platform from likes of Fortnite, Minecraft, Roblox etc.

I don't think it has any chance to dethrone them without being on PC, and I can't see that happening.

They've been using this model since the first Splatoon in 2015

But this is biggest launch of any game type ever in Japan, if I am correct. So, their first taste of how big they can get.

it's not really GAAS because all the updates are free besides the DLC campaigns.

Free/paid has nothing to do with being a GAAS.

If a developer keeps working on their game evolving it, it would be considered GAAS.

I don't think Nintendo wants to do that otherwise there would be a free to play version on Android. They have a platform to sell their games like always.

And why Nintendo wouldn't want to do that?

Most of Nintendo fans are approaching their 40s- 50s, even 60s. In 10 years, most of them will go extinct.

Unless they recruit fresh blood they have no chance of survival.

I’m not sure Nintendo’s own information lines up with your comment

Pretty sure it does, it refers to a system of continuous monetization. If it was simply describing devs working on games after release than every game would be GAAS since patches, bug fixes, balance fine tuning have become standard in the industry.

In the video game industry, games as a service (GaaS) represents providing video games or game content on a continuing revenue model, similar to software as a service. Games as a service are ways to monetize video games either after their initial sale, or to support a free-to-play model. Games released under the GaaS model typically receive a long or indefinite stream of monetized new content over time to encourage players to continue paying to support the game.

Not happening.

Not multiplatform.
Not even remotely the same social media presence and clout.
And believe it or not, in the face of those games you mentioned, a game like Splatoon would be deemed "too kiddy" even by the kids themselves. Western devs know what kids like these days in terms of aesthetics and presentation. Nintendo is too Japanese and too much in its own ways to have the same appeal in today's world. Kids may enjoy Splatoon, but a game like Splatoon isn't cool enough, and being a part of the current cool thing is very important for kids.

Whoa, that's even worse than I anticipated. Such small percentage of kids play them. All kids these days basically have a screen glued to their face 12 hrs a day.

Nintendo must be desperate to be that screen.

This is like, ridiculously narrow definition for GAAS games. I have played a ton of stuff that I am pretty sure would be considered GAAS titles.

But they wouldn't be, by this definition.

I would think Splatoon must be current cool in Japan at least, going by these sales?

Yeah, what happens is kids grow older and start families and have less time to play CoD and FIFA for 12 hours a day on their PlayStation so they then look to Nintendo’s portable systems.

They want kids playing their games and the last Splatoon sold like 13 million copies. They don't want to compete with Fortnite and Roblox doing the same thing they do. It's in Nintendo's DNA to do things their way and not follow trends just because, even if they are not #1.

Nintendo is killing it left and right and Kratos here is basically spinning it into Nintendo is doomed once more. Never change, PS-gaf!

What i see in that graph is that once people get access to disposable income, is when they start playing Nintendo. Kids play 'free' stuff on their phones and PC, not Nintendo (or PlayStation or Xbox for that matter) €60 premium games. Nintendo is actually in a really comfortable spot right now.

I thought the mantra on here was Nintendo made games for kids, some consistency please. ;)
