EA to replace Origin app with the new EA Play app "later this year"

EA has officially replaced its Origin PC client with a new app, more 10 years after it was originally introduced.

Announced in a blog post, the EA App – which has been in open beta for some time – will soon replace the Origin client with what EA is calling its “fastest and lightest PC client to date”.

According to EA, the new app has a more stramlined design and performs automatic game downloads and background updates.

Players can also link their friends lists with other platforms such as Steam, Xbox and PlayStation.

Local and cloud saves will all be automatically transferred to the new client, which players will be invited to download soon, according to EA.

Mac players, however, won’t currently receive the new app yet. “Origin for Mac continues to be the place you can access your games,” EA has stated.

Although I've had this EA App installed for a while, and let me tell you - it ain't all that much better. It's just kinda more of the same with a different label and it still runs like crap. But at least now they finally seemed to have included all games from Origin library because about a year ago, they didn't even have that.

It also begs the question what will happen with all the games that you bought on Steam but still required Origin to be fired up before you could play them (because it was so much fun when Uplay did it...) I tested this just now and even though I already transitioned to EA Play app, it still prompted me to reinstall Origin when I launched Mass Effect Legendary Edition that I bought on Steam. So yeah, what is up with that lol. I'm guessing that they will eventually patch that out too and Steam games will be launching through this new EA App but given EA's shitty track record, I wouldn't put it past them that they could potentially drop the ball on this and you won't be able to launch your Steam-bought games because of this.

fuck yea. the origin program is the worst.

and if they are ditching it on Steam then i will just get the games through steam now. i never saw the point of buying on steam if you still have to deal with Origin.

RIP Origin.
Well slap me in the ass and call me Daisy.

So they are capable of making a good decision every now and then...
Butter my butt and call me a biscuit!

Ah, that's what I've been waiting for, for years. I can now see my Mass Effect 2 DLC even though that's been superseded by the Legendary Edition. It does appear that my base game of Dragon Age Origins has now got all the DLC marked as free now. I'm just going to try adding them all.

EDIT: Indeed. The DLC bundle for Dragon Age Origins is now free. Drat. It doesn't include "The Awakening" though.

i suppose this explains why the FIFA 23 page says the "EA app for Windows". I thought it strange it didn't say Origin. I had no idea they were making a new app.

Installed it, which uninstalled Origin. However Titanfall 2 still very much wants Origin 🤔
Other than that, UI isn't janky but it does just seem to exist to push EA Play, their gamepass service.

I actually have that on Steam since it was like half-price about 2 years ago and the discount carried over with each annual billing cycle so I kept it since then. I wonder if this change will have any impact on that.

Why are they still using 2 different apps ? And i could not find cd-key activation anywhere on the ea play app so i had to use origin? Which moron thinks this is in any way usable?

Nah, I think this is a wait for it. They would not have remade their store app from scratch if they dont have a bigger plan with it. I think they're going to try to step away from Steam again, at some point. Pull an Epic pussy-ass shit.

I haven't used Origin in almost two years.. Anyway, you can redeem a code in "my collection", there's a big button named "REDEEM CODE" there.

EA, huh, I bought 2042 the other day, cost me £18, been playing Batllefield since 1942, i'm that old, I loved that game, one of my all time greats, it was the game that took me down the path of PC gaming as a whole and built pc's because of it, suffered through XP and continued down that road until now..

And I look at EA now and my god, all the things they have done, of all the evil they've subjected upon the gaming landscape and all I can think is how?

How can they have gotten away with this all?

They're monsters.

And that new Need for Speed, fuck me. It's never going to end is it..

It doesn't say "EA Play app" anywhere that I can see (except in the thread title), just "EA app".

Which leads you to believe the EA app should be the one you should download. But if you do, some of your games will likely be missing and you'll have to download origin as well.

Love launchers!

On a slightly different note, one thing I never noticed I appreciated was the fact that I can right click steam in the taskbar and click one of the few recent games I've already played without maximizing the client or really even opening steam (since it's running in the background). Blizzard thought it would be a good idea for the entire app to start up as well when you right click and choose a game from the taskbar. If you keep a pretty clean start bar with minimal things open it's kind of annoying to close it every time you start a game. Luckily I only play a game from battle.net once every half a year.

It's the same thing, there's only either Origin or this new app. Idk why I typed EA Play, probably just remembered it wrong since that's the name of their subscription or whatever.

I thought it was called EA play too. I just wonder why EA is pushing it when all your games can't be played from EA app. Games are missing.

When was the last time you checked? They only added support for all origin games a few months ago. I can see all my games there now.

So have they updated all the Steam links so that when you install an EA game via the Steam client it installs this new app instead of Origin?

Same shit different UI. Beta happened a ~2-3 months ago,. 99 dollars a year for EA Play Pro (only available on PC) is a pretty good deal considering you get all their games (if you like sports games) day 1 including games from other developers.

Of course it does, Origin was always about not giving money to Steam, not actual customer service.

The one thing that always surprised me about Origin is that it needed to update so much yet there were no meaningful improvements? No idea what that was all about.

Anyway I look forward to still buying all of the EA releases on Steam.

Origin was what felt like a decade in Beta stage. Now they replace a somewhat stable and good software code with another mess of software *facepalm*

Tried out the EA App due to being needed for Game Pass integration. Had two issues straight at the first time using it. Software crap that was uninstalled after two attempts of solving issues over period of one week. No thanks. Was staying on Origin for EA games (not that I have much of them to begin with, though).

I had the same issue. Somehow, EA managed to make something even worse than Origin.

I have no idea what EA is even attempting here, because this new launcher feels worse than Origin in pretty much any way, shape or form (and it's not like I'm saying this as someone who loved Origin to begin with).

Keep in mind that while this EA Desktop App was being developed in parallel with Origin for a while now it literally replaces it. If you try to install this client, it automatically removes Origin from your computer.
Which wouldn't be an issue, if they bothered implementing it retroactively in older software... But apparently that's not necessarily the case as I crossed several posts on the Steam forums of people claiming that if they attempt to launch some old EA games after installing this, the game tries to install Origin again,
In short, the usual half-baked EA mess.

I just hope that rumor about EA games on Steam starting to shy away from enforcing a client will prove to be true in the long run, because that would solve the problem at its roots.

...which is what I already described in the OP.

I'm guessing they're gonna transition everything over to the new app eventually because with Origin's shutdown, it would render all those Steam games unplayable. This would be an epic fuck up that definitely wouldn't go unnoticed.
