God of War Ragnarök on PS5 - The Digital Foundry Tech Review

Yeah I mean look it looks to me very similar to the ps4 game, I don’t know what’s going on underneath the hood, maybe I’m expecting too much - at a certain point these like zoom ins to tiny details don’t give me the wow factor I expect from next gen - - just annoyed we’re still waiting, it’s been 2 years - ssm is so talented I wanna see their true next gen output. As with Naughty dog and insomniac

Like the jump from uncharted 3 to 4 was insane - I’m waiting for that moment
Well, this is just an anomaly due both to pandemic and crisis. Many delays and shortages which reduced installed base made more necessary to continue to sell games to the old gen.
We would be probably ahead of where we are now, but I'm positive that from now on we will see a decise switch to proper next gen only games.
In particular, I'm very curious about Naughty Dog's new ip and Santa Monica new one too (the space game by Cory Barlog, which is in the works for some time). I think 2023 will be the year starting to premiere the first new IPs.

I ain't keep up with what's been posted so forgive if this has.

I'm assuming this is the PS5 version.
Now people are gonna say artistic choices were made.
even if that trailer wasn't made on PS5.
that's a clear downgrade and theirs nothing in the original that's beyond what the PS5 is capable of, sure the game still looks great
And while the PS5 version is better then the PS4 version it's clear it was downgraded more closer to PS4 levels then it was before

wait what? they downgraded from the original trailer which didnt even look that great in the first place?

is this video spoilery?

EDIT: i dont see the downgrade. Just different filters. Character models mostly look the same. hard to tell if the environments have been downgraded because the action moves so fast but most of the changes do indeed feel like artistic choices for color grading.

Because it's blatantly obvious that is what's happened? Most of the changes are lighting changes that drastically change the mood of the scene.

is this video spoilery?
It's not, its the reveal trailer placed exactly next to the same scene in the game. It's safe to watch. All it shows are adjustments to lighting.

I really need to know if this 40FPS mode 120Hz thing works on the LG CX because I recall the games that do support it at this point aren't perfect.
which games? i have played ratchet, miles, horizon fw at 40 fps and they are all fine on the CX. way better in VRR.

The issue is with the Sony x900H which has a poor 4k 120 fps implementation. CX is fantastic.

Yeah those were the ones...
Weird, wonder why I thought there was a problem

There's more then lighting changes that's been made

Not saying there isn't improvements, there is.
And overall I think it's looks better, but a reduction in detail on select things was done.

Haven’t watched the video yet but I was initially gonna play on performance mode, now I’m not sure. Are the graphical cutbacks noticeable in perf (I play on a 55” TV)?
No. Even with direct comparisons and constantly switching back and forth, the cuts have negligible visual impact on the overall graphic presentation. John's favorite mode was the unlocked HFR mode, but that's to be expected.

Some detail seems to have been lost, but no idea why they would do that on the ps5. They are already using lower LODs on ps4 vs ps5.

This game was actually internally delayed as disclosed by Kratos actor (he was the reason it was delayed). I'd guess that delay allowed them to spend more time on the excellent PS5 version, notably the performance modes which are actually the default (and best) modes.

Oh no I meant a delay into next year. Some were saying they were rushing it to release it this year and the game would come out in a bad state without another delay.

Hopefully that makes sense.

wait, why would it not work on the CX? isn't the CX an HDMI 2.1 TV with Freesync, Gsync and HDMI VRR?
that TV should have no issue playing the unlocked 40fps/fidelity mode with VRR

be it artistically or technically, the Trailer looked better.
some of the hue changes in the lighting of the final game makes it look way more dull... but maybe IGN just fucked up their calibration 🤷‍♂️

I don't see any downgrades.
Should we even use this youtube video to compare? I mean. Look at this shit:

well the obvious issue in the video is that their final release footage looks dull and desaturated as fuck... I think that can be argued away by bad calibration and/or shitty encoding.

BUT, there are clearly some LOD reductions in some scenes. that doesn't mean anything tho, because what could be the reason for this is that they took away detail from something they deemed to be less important, and instead added detail elsewhere and it's hard to compare all of that in a youtube video that tries to imitate a trailer shot fot shot

So basically:

If you've got a 120hz screen and VRR - 1440p unlocked is the way
Regular 60 fps screen - 60 fps mode
Everyone else - 40fps mode

The 30 fps mode isn't really worth it. A very slight bump in visuals is not worth the performance + responsiveness hit. Plus, its blurrier..

Those long posts don't cover that red neck boy
All these people bitching about spoilers:
Unless it wasn't in the initial upload, there is a text panel warning at the start of the video that spoilers are ahead.

Its not like DF didn't warn y'all (because that would be clowning)

Are there that big of a difference between PS5 and PS4 version? Seems like PS4 version also has 60 fps. I was thinking of just buying the PS4 version to play on my PS5 and save myself 30 bucks.

lower LOD, lower resolution, reduced tessellation, unstable framerate and reduced resolution on some effects is my guess...

I see the PS4 Pro option still has dynamic resolution up to 1600p and 60 fps. So playing on PS5, probably means I'll be having a locked 1600p 60 fps experience with the PS4 version?

This would be the landscape of console we’re coming out yearly like phones. Iterative small upgrades.
I am kinda sad that this is just a ps4 game. 2 years into next gen. Wtf man. This should look like real life by now.

Anyway. Still looks impressive so no complaining. Just what could be. I am fine if games stopped with this fidelity. With games like this or uc4 I am rather content

Never say never but yeah, this is one game where 4k, 60/120fps are being sold as a positive when in fact they are holding back the scope of the game.

At least John mentions this, but imo he's not harsh enough.

I really dont like how these tech reviewers almost feel apologetic about criticizing these games. Umm, thats your job. He also brings up Horizon FW a couple of times to show that GOW feels held back even compared to other cross gen games. So if this game doesnt look next gen, and it doesnt look as good as games that are cross gen then surely you can be a little more critical than that.

I dont expect it from gamespot or IGN, but NX Gamer, DF and other tech critics need to be the one who put graphics and tech above story and gameplay in their reviews. Literally saying that its the same experience as playing a PS4 game on PC and trying to pass it off as a GOOD THING is absolutely ridiculous. It's NOT a good thing lol. So many qualifiers in those two paragraphs. Be a man and do your job. Be critical. Hold these guys accountable. You might lose access to Sony devs but you will gain some respect from your viewers for doing your job.
I've been criticizing John in particular for doing this for years.

Yo SlimySnake SlimySnake did they analized the water during the boat sections?

From the few stuff i saw it looks not much improved from the mediocre water in the first one.

But i didn't watched anything recent in 4k to avoid spoiler so maybe they improved something in the final release.

No reason to not have better water than hfw, a fucking open world.
ANALYZE ********

After watching a few videos here and there - it really does look like a last gen title on steriods.

They've pumped up the detail for PS5 but it's lacking that oomph.

So if you have a tv that can do 120 with vrr, there is no point in doing the 60fps mode?

Is that what they are saying in the article?
Looks like it takes a hit to resolution, but author says it's not a big deal?

I was gonna go for 40fps, but maybe not?

Why are they using a blurry/higher compressed video for the release version? (thats why detail is lost in some sections like the town/boat)

As for the rest, it looks like its using different color grading. The old version looks to 'pop' more in some scenes but that's in scenes that shouldn't have that pop (in a snow storm for example), so they have corrected that to make the characters look more like they are in the scene instead of placed on it (I prefer it that way as its more realistic but some prefer things to pop out even if its unnatural)

So, no, not downgraded (why? again, every time a game is released we go through this bull, at least most of the puddles are frozen this time)

So is detail quality (shadows, lighting, tessellation...) the same in Quality locked 30fps and Quality unlocked VRR? Or is it downgraded in some way like in performance mode?

Bro, come on this isn't just lighting

No amount of adjusted lighting or higher bit rate capture is gonna fix that because it's been downgraded

Okay, so what have they downgraded exactly? the geometry looks the same, they have changed the lighting, they have changed some textures. throughout development scenes change, it doesnt mean that they are downgraded (especially in a relatively simple scene like this one). Look at the snow scenes, the snow is a lot more complex now, on one scene they added more geometry (extra branches and other objects), the town scenes also now look more complex (especially background objects like trees). The boat scene they added splashes to the water when you jump in, the sled scene you can see further into the distance and the character model close ups are much more detailed.

You can nit-pick individual scenes all day long but some scenes may look better and some may look worse, they change through development, a change does not mean a downgrade especially if the geometry remains the same or even increases.

I just wonder what the big discussion point is? What if it is downgraded or not? Should the reviews reflect one less point due to reasons?

Or is there some win here in making that point? Not that I count on reviews but they do speak for themselves and I'm not sure what or why it matters in the grand scheme of technical things. This is a cross generation game and that is good.

The next one may not be.

No I actually said there are improvements in other areas and overall it looks better.
It's just some have got there pants in twist because I pointed out there has been downgrades when really there shouldn't have been on PS5 and people are denying it and acting like I'm some green rat trolling.
And anybody that knows anything on this forum knows I ain't no green rat.
If I say something it's because it true or I'm actually joking which everybody knows when I am.
And that's regardless what platform it's on.

If there is a point to anything here then it's the game despite not looking that much different to the original GOW2018 on PS4 got downgraded on PS5 so it could be cross gen.

BARRELGATE is real folks!
