The 30 Best Games of 2022 - Paste Magazine

This list reeks of pretentious, edgy, psuedo-intellectuals getting onto a call and deciding what lesser known games they can prop up the list. And, likewise shovelware/indie lovers will claim it to be the best and "unbiased" list.

Scream personal tastes/opinions all you want but I find it hard to believe there are 30 games better than Ragnarok which came out this year. Not to mention Elden Ring just cracking the Top 5. Absolute hogwosh.
yes it kind of reminded me of some pitchfork list (music "journalism" site)

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but this is legitimately the WORST list I have ever seen.

Nothing on NORCO, but to not even have God of War in the top 30 games this year?

Well....I don't have a problem with the list really, but this.....

Norco is Paste Magazine’s Game of the Year, ignoring God of War: Ragnarok

"As readable, it is a courageous ranking, drawn up outside the logic of marketing, which therefore did not necessarily favor the most advertised or best-selling games, but expressed a precise point of view from the editorial staff. The more commercial games, such as Elden Ring, Stray or Horizon Forbidden West, are not lacking, but that’s not the point.

Naturally many will discuss it, hopefully not too harshly, also because those who don’t usually play indies will know very few of the works on the list."

They should have just let the list speak for itself rather than pat themselves on the back for being so "courageous". And they are needlessly highlighting the fact that they left out God of War: R. They just turned their "courage" into click bait.

Fucking journalists....

Ignore this. It is from an entirely different site. Got my wires crossed when googling.

This person seems to value "creativity" more than production value
There is more creativity in some triple-A game systems than entire games on this list though.

I find it a lot more interesting to try out SIFU's combat system or GhostWire Tokoy's magic combat than anything you will find in Citizen Sleeper, Tunic, or Signalis, which frankly, are not very creative with their gameplay at all.

And I am not trying to bash these games, but they are just not as innovative and creative as people claim. An indie game can have a different art style and people will hail it as the second coming of Michelangelo's Sistine chapel.

Man, I forgot Metal Hellsinger and Prodeus. My list is definitely still evolving up until the end of December.

And yeah, the hype article has a clickbait headline. Oh well I guess.

How many of these did you play to definitively say the top 5 games don't deserve it? I think elden ring is the greatest game ever made...I can understand how someone with a specific taste/style would prefer immortality over it. I was debating after 50 hours of vampire survivor if I enjoy that more. Just because a game is massively popular doesn't make it better. The kind of person who says an MCU movie should be nominated for an oscar because of how popular it is.

At some point it will hopefully dawn on you that your opinion is not the only possible interpretation of truth. For example, I also rank Citizen Sleeper very highly. I've played Sifu and got the Platinum on it. It's on my list but Citizen Sleeper was one of the most memorable games I've played all year due to excellence in writing, story, music, artwork, and game design.

If you want to put Sifu over Citizen Sleeper, that's fine with me. It's a great game. It's all subjective. None of this stuff even matters. It's supposed to just be a fun way to talk about games.

Of course, it's opinions, but you can make arguments that go beyond opinions too.

I mean, if the list would have a top 3 of Gungrave, Matchpoint Tennis, and MX Vs. ATV, would you really just go "oh, it's subjective"?

It's subjective to a point.

Thank you for that. I so glad to see Weird West was included. It IS weird as hell, but very unique and fun.

Disagree with the order but most of these games would be on my own list. I enjoyed the smaller budget games a whole lot this year.

I'd say that's a fair statement. We can argue about placement but most of the games on that top 30 are fucking fantastic. I really need to play Xenoblade 3 it seems.

Sure, but it's not like people are picking total trash. Lots of people are into these games.

Sifu has a totally forgettable story with basically no dialogue. The game design actively inhibits enjoyment at times with the roguelike structure. But it's got one of the best 3D combat systems of all time, mostly an evolution from Arkham style combat but refined and perfected. Then Citizen Sleeper is one of the best stories of the year with emotional depth enhanced by my personal OST of the year and great artwork. What do you pick? Story or 3D combat? One isn't inherently better than the other. It's pretty much just up to you what you like to play. You can make an argument for what you like! Getting into the details about what you enjoyed is the fun part of these threads.

Despite me being very much into story heavy games, I must admit that neither Norco nor Citizen Sleeper did much for me. But I’m in the minority, at least among that niche. I didn’t find the writing as impressive as others did, and the lack of voice acting detracts from the presentation. Granted, I didn’t finish either game.

For everyone shitting on NORCO, this is the reception it has on STEAM:
QNPlWZX.png

What a bunch of sad/pretentious STEAM users, right? All for vanity points. Maybe, just maybe there's a world beyond your industrial graphical powerhouse built by 1000 worldwide devs.
it's on my wishlist but that's kinda selection bias, it has <1k reviews on Steam and the people who have played it most likely are the ones that would like it

I'm sure I'd be very positive on it too, but Paste magazine is still pretentious hipster bullshit

as someone else posted they patted themselves on the back for not including Ragnaraok on their top 30 so they know they're being 'edgy'

What’s the relation between aroged and paste? Honest question. I don’t know these people.

They didn’t pat themselves. They’re just an alternative magazine who, yes, prefer the offbeat path. And that’s fine.

Totally agree. Writing, music and story just created a vibe that was....man....just truly excellent. Alone at the end of the universe...this melancholic vibe was truly truly great.

(I also played this after Elden Ring so I was ready for something like this).

I can no longer ignore Norco, downloading it right now. A metacritic score of 89 out of 29 reviews was already a very good indicator for me, and now this... I will start playing it directly without watching anything related to it's gameplay or story.

Yeah man....just go for it.

For an old man with kids, I've done pretty well out of that list so far. It is refreshing to not see a list choc full FPS e.g. Fortnite, Apex, COD etc.

Green = played/playing
Red = NOT played, no plans to play
Gold = WANT to play soon

Looking at that list I see heaps on there that I'm playing through Gamepass and day one. Insane value for money.

PowerWash Simulator???

Sheesh. Different tastes and all that I can accept but were there really so few other good games out that this deserves to be in the top 30? I was falling asleep playing that game (via GamePass). Definitely a game that sounds as exciting as the title suggests in my book!
That's what makes it so good.

The Gamepass Effect:

-What the hell is NORCO?
-Well, it's on Xbox, let me see if it's on Gamepass.
-Wait, I have it installed?

Holy shit. I didn't realize it is was on Game Pass.
