Microsoft Raising Prices on New, First-Party Games Built for Xbox Series X|S to $70 in 2023

Reading some of the green team replies almost makes you believe that the only option for PlayStation owners are 70$ games. The amount of bs some of you try to feed people online is insane.

PS+ essential has a bunch of games, including first party ps5 games. You can also you know, take advantage of the constant sales going on and not pay 70$ for games. Considering how many PlayStation gamers buy, it doesn’t seem like there are a lack of options.

One look at 22 and it’s easy to see that if you paid 120$ on the promise of first party day and date releases… you got ripped off. And for 120$ you could’ve probably owned every single game released on GP in 22 that is worth its weight. Congrats, you played yourself.

As a PC player mainly, key resellers and Game Pass are getting even more attractive. Also, with the sales on Steam and other resellers, no one have to pay the full price if you're willing to wait two or three months.
Not even that long in many cases.

On PC you can always find a sale price, day one.

Nah. I'd never buy a game at that price for Xbox. My kid will have to wait for sales, no problem. Besides, there's Gamepass.

You haven’t countered my argument at all so stay stupid.
You said 120 bucks worth of good stuff. I said there is so much more. If you are narrow-minded and think GP this year released 120$ worth of games then it is a You problem, because it is clearly not the true. I know you feel threatened by the fact that GP has great value, but you don't use it so stop telling people what it is worth.

You're right. Ms deserves some shit but it's a bit hypocritical from those that have defended Sony in any way over the last few years.
Deserved shit. Just like this to an extent but also hypocritical and funny coming from certain posters on here.

I guess you only see hypocrisy one way. That's convenient.

That's great.
I'll still buy them after a few months when they're all patched up, complete, and for like half the price.
AAA companies are making it extremely easy to buy indies instead of their overpriced crap.

"This price reflects the content, scale, and technical complexity of these titles..."
Hey, look! Complete and absolute lies.

This video is evergreen.

Sucks. But expexted. I'll buy fewer games this gen, both for Xbox and PlayStation, and continue to play on Game Pass and get some physical copies on sale.

I am not surprised given the current inflation levels. What is not going up?

The problem is everyone is going to be clamoring for wage increases which will further exacerbate the problem. I would not be surprised to see Sony raise prices further since they increased prices when inflation was flat.

I’m so tired of seeing this kind of response to this. These companies are already making billions, it’s not like they need to charge the extra. If they can justify it, let us see the figures.

When these companies are struggling and aren’t selling millions of games a year, I’m down for inflation being a valid justification.
You can be as tired of it as you want, but it displays a lack of perspective on your part that it has to be said.

Again: Record profits are affected by inflation as much as any other income, and also the whole point of running and expanding the business; especially in terms of a luxury medium like gaming. They don't "need" record profits any more than you "need" to be playing larger, longer games at a higher fidelity.

This is about return on investments. The more they put in, the more they expect to get out.

Funny and good thing is that the majority of the market seems to understand this. Why we're still having this discussion on an enthusiast forum escapes me.

I've not defended MS here in any way outside of I understand the inflation thing, but it's still. Bullshit.

I used to get aunt Bessie's jam roll poly for £1 it's now £2.50 in the UK! Fucking insanity I tell you.

My point I was attempting to make but poorly is that the back and forth seems to be driven by posters who are happy to pay £70 for games. MS prepped everyone for price increases and they've followed through.

I'm not gonna pay the 70 squid, nothing ironic or hypocritical from me. I still refuse to pay 70 for a game.

All I said is luckily I have game pass which means I avoid these costs and can still play day one MS games then pick them up later if I desire.

Is there anything else hypocritical I've said?

Guys I have one question that is burning my brain alive lol. Maybe it's stupid but help me out here please.

I was thinking about this price increase noise and here is what I don't clearly understand:

So game pricetag in 2005 was 60$ right? Nearly 90$ with inflation.
Game development was cheaper. Ambitions were lower. Hiring people was cheaper.

So now they ask for 70$

Does this fact show that gamedev business profit margin had suuuuch a big headstart for all these years, that despite fixed pricetag, it's finally now - only after 15 years companies aren't happy with it?

Wasn't 60$ already intensely high price to begin with? Did they make it 60$ on purpose to be future proof? And have we been overpaying this entire time lol?

I mean.....you are an Xbox fan wagging your finger at the hypocrisy of Sony fans while ignoring the hypocrisy of Xbox fans.

Even if that should occur... you do realize there still won't be a better gaming value anywhere. How much is it going to raise to where it won't still be a better deal than anything else on offer?

Game Pass is possibly on track to generate over $4 billion or close to it just this year alone. It will be fine.

Value is subjective. I'd rather pay 70€ to play something like God of War over paying 15€ a month for Pentiment and Scorn.

So if you want to buy these 2023 exclusives you have to spend $420 but if you just want to play them you need $180, that is if you are paying $15/month

Redfall
Starfield
Forza Motorsport
Diablo 4
Hellblade 2
Avowed
That is what it comes down to basically. It highly depends on someone's gaming habits. If someone is only interested in two of those games and likes to own, they are looking at $150 vs $180.

Gaming subscriptions, like subs for music/movies could get everyone used to the idea that they don't need to own their games....which is already happening on one side of gaming.

What's the point when their still doing day one on game pass?

Yeah, it's the few people who care about game ownership, but Phil has been training Xbox fans to just wait for games to drop on gamepass this whole gen, so why would people drop $70 on Ms titles when they can play it on gamepass?

This is looking like MS played themselves.
Nah. They are prepping for the AB multiplatform future.

Microsoft isn't abandoning game sales and they are still part of the gaming business as a publisher. This wasn't an EA, Ubisoft, Sony thing. This has been an industry thing. Microsoft is just now officially recognizing the price increase. They were also late to do so when we went from $49.99 to $59.99 — back then, the promise was, all MS first party games would be $49.99 but it didn't last long.

Just once it would be nice to get some transparency around the decision making. It is for greed, plain and simple.

Its disappointing that MS is continuing the lie that this is to compensate for the vast improvements in next-gen games. It's truly embarrassing that they think flicking the switch for 4k/60fps is worth a 30% price hike. Not to mention that the highest spec games have always been the cheapest historically speaking, they are called PC games.

I'm sure that Series Forza will be like an entirely different game to the Xone version. I'm sure there will be a boatload of new features, mechanics, expanded gameplay etc.......I'm sure..............(I tried being more sarcastic but it physically hurt)

Seriously curious as to when lying for monetary gain, stop being labelled fraud.

Yep, always was. Redfall isn't 30% more technically demanding than Deathloop. Just BS. I've always said it's BS.

With all $70 games, I try to buy as few as possible. Gamepass will help me not buy most of these for now. So far I think I've bought: Demon's Souls, GOW Ragnarok, um .... that might be it unless I'm forgetting some. I'll probably get FFXVI. Most $70 stuff I wait for a price drop. I've never once bought their excuses on this.

You forgot the console versions of Age of Empires II and Age of Empires IV. Next year looks to be great. Not sure about Avowed though, as AAA open world RPGs take a while to develop.

We'll also hear more about the AAA steampunk RPG that InXile has been working on for the last 3+ years. I have a feeling once we have a name and a trailer, it might only be a year out from release. I'm actually glad MS/InXile didn't release a teaser trailer a few years back when they released all those teaser trailers for Perfect Dark, Avowed, Fable, etc.

Kinda surprised they didnt jump on it earlier.

It only gives makes Gamepass looks better for them
No one pays 70 dollars for Halo Infinite or Microsoft Flying Simulator. But I bet many people will buy Starfield for 70 dollars.

Xbox knew they weren't in a position to ask extra for their lackluster games couple of years ago. Also, it was great PR to hold it for couple of years. You already see people claiming Xbox to be some kind of fallen hero who tried to fight the evil for as long as they could but eventually even they had to succumb to evil and increase the price of their games lol.
