PS5 has been out for over 2 years now and cross gen games are still released very often. I'm just curious how many people here still use a PS4 as their main gaming platform and if they have any plans to upgrade or if they plan to stay on PS4 as long as possible. I also know PS5 is still hard to get your hands on so I'm sure some people may be waiting for availability as well. The poll has separate options for PS4 Pro and Slim/Original as well.

Personally I have a PS5 (preordered it in 2020 before release) so I've chosen that option. I didn't have a PS4 so I used the PS5 to catch up on exclusives I missed.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the holdouts want to wait for a slim model, or simply for more PS5 exclusives. I ended up with a PS5 and have been enjoying it, but if money was tighter I’d have no problem being happy with my PS4 Pro. This has been the case gen to gen for the last 15 years, it’s not until year 3 or 4 that the new console is a no brainer (when it has a ton of exclusives and utilized the power better than cross gen and launch titles).

PS4 Pro still does the business God of War and Forbidden West are perfectly fine on there..plus the PS4 is better size and shape than the great hulking thing that is the PS5....and unless you are a massive Gran Turismo and Returnal fan there is NOTHING on the PS5 that puts the PS3-4 catalogue to shame.....Ratchet and Clank might be ok, but I'd argue Crash Bandicoot 4 is as good as that title from what I've seen. The other point being Sony are putting as much effort into their legacy collection as they did in building the PS-One classic, means that for "next gen" ....the Xbox Series X is my destination of choice and will be for a number of years yet....interim upgrade or no interim upgrade...(right now there is nothing on the PS5 that is as good as Metal Gear 2, 3 and PW, Republic Commando, Force Unleashed, Burnout Revenge, Panzer Dragoon Orta to name but a few..)

PS5 has been out of stock 99% of the time in my small town area. Only saw one on Gamestop store shelves back in November. Not saying it’s impossible to get one but I’m not going out of my way to get one. Waiting seems smarter since that means more new games available and won’t have to buy bundles. Have a PC so I’m not starving for something to play.

I assume many people still didn't upgrade because of:
  • Lack of money / economical crysis
  • Most top games still are crossgen, not enough top next gen only games
  • No 4K HDR VRR to take full advantage of improvements over PS4 (many people still have FullHD tvs)
  • (At least until months ago) lack of PS5 stock in stores to find it easily

It's the best way to play PS4 games, it has several exclusive PS5 titles with more on the way, and there's literally a 0% chance of a price drop any time soon, if ever.

If you play Playstation games, I can't think of a single reason to wait on getting a PS5 other that just not having the cash for it.

So it's 550 bucks to play the same games i already play, and that i can continue playing with mostly no problem?

Also with no exclusives?

Where do I sign.

Only thing i dislike on ps5 is the color scheme, i though it would grow on me with time, but no it's awful, full black ps5 is the best and sexiest ps5

Upgrade to play what

I'm perfectly satisfied with my original model PlayStation 4 from 2013. I'm not in any hurry to get the PS5. I don't like the bulkiness of the current system design, and there aren't enough PS5 exclusive games that I'm interested in for me to justify purchasing it yet.

If they release a smaller, more power-efficient PS5 console next year (as the rumors say), then I'll be much more inclined to get it.

I don't primarily game on Playstation but most of the stuff I wanted to play I already did on the Pro. For the rest, it's either coming to PC or there aren't enough games to justify a PS5. Once the library grows, I'll probably get one.

It's kind of slow though. Lots of sequels and besides Returnal, nothing I really want to play. Looking forward to Wolverine that hopefully won't be open-world.

Last gen players hang around, every gen it happens. Lots of ps5’s out in the wild now, my GameStop had 6 of them god of war bundles for $559.00 worst inventory was the first two years buying a console off Facebook was the worst.

Money and availability?

Its far easier to find one now, and I'm preparing myself to adquire one next year, but until early 2022 it made no sense to get a PS5, especially considering that if you wanted one, you would have to pay the prices the scalpers dictated.

Now with far more stock in the wild, and 9th gen exclusives games being more of a thing next year, I'm feeling the need to get one.

I've had a normal PS4 since 2016.
Wanted a PS5 for the longest time, but couldn't get one. Never saw one in any store until I found one in this country. Ordered immediately, two months back.

No reason since I game on PC. Also, the only game I turn on my PS4 Pro nowadays is Dragon's Crown, not very interested in Sony's most recent output.

considering 90% of PS5 games are PS4 games ( if not more than 90%) I would assume that's the reason.

I believe next year is the year people should start buying PS5 consoles more and more. Especially if there is a slim version coming soon.
This is exactly the reason why I’m still rockin’ my ps4 pro. Sony hasn’t given me a reason to make the jump yet as basically everything can still be played on last gen, and it still looks pretty darn good most of the time! Will probably upgrade once the rumored ps5 slim or whatever releases next year.

I find it hard to believe people are still being serious about availability. Is it really this bad in the US? They're available on stock with 24hr shipping in 3 different retailers here and I've recently seen a wall of PS5s in a random ass electronics store in the middle of nowhere

There are exclusives. And a ton of PS4 games look way better on PS5.

And again, you can play all PS4 games on PS5 and the price is never going to drop on this thing, so if you ever plan to get a PS5 there’s no good reason to wait unless you’re strapped for cash (which is a perfectly valid reason).

I don’t like the design and it will get expensive to have 4 original controllers again for the couch sessions with friends. Will wait until they make a more mature / premium looking version.

Until that I’m pretty fine with my current PS4 Pro + Series X setup :)

Well they want ~7000-7500SEK (us$666-713) for a PS5 (Disc version)... Also very hard to just "get one" unless you F5 24/7 on sites that sell PS5's.

When I can buy a PS5 for a hell of a lot less, I might get one. (my PS4 Pro was sub us$400).

1 - supply
2 - price
3 - not all that many exclusives.

And this is coming from me who owns and loves his PS5. I wouldnt have it if I had such a generous girlfriend who bought me mine.

There's lots of reasons to upgrade... but if you don't care about them, you don't care! As with so many things it's gonna come down to personal preference.

Do you want:
- to play the handful of PS5 exclusives on release & not wait for them for 2-4 years on PC
- the very best versions of anything/everything that can be played on playstation right now
- the improvements made in the dualsense

If yes, you'll upgrade (like me). If not... well, obviously you won't. Pretty simple math.

For me the PS5 has been for multiple reasons one of my favorite consoles of my life. But I know that will not apply to everyone, and arguing people are wrong for either wanting these things or not wanting them is a waste of everyone's time.

I got one for Christmas in 2021 even though I mainly play on Series X and Switch. I mainly play MLB The Show 16 on it. I will go back and fire up an older PS4 game from my backlog, but in the end I go back to MLB The Show 16.

I then received MLB The Show 22 for Christmas yesterday and it looks really good! Who knows if I’ll play anything else on it.

Well I put a decent graphics card in my PC, I play a lot of indie games these days and PC games tends to be cheaper or sometimes free. I may get a PS5 at some point but I'm in no rush, there a few other things I need to do first like upgrading my audio and getting acoustic treatment.

Why would you get a PS5 when almost every game is also on PS4 and you can save those $500 on a device that actually has games?

None of the choice above. I have a PS4 pro and I’m waiting for the mid gen refresh. It might be more power, or at least much smaller form factor.

I know it's about playstation, but I understand why people don't.

I have a gaming pc and a one x, wanted to upgrade to series x but I hold the urge back.

Given there's really no new games to justify either since they feel like a middle gen upgrade because 99 percent of the library is the same, and there really aren't any console sellers yet.

Yes you get better graphics.

But you can pay the same shit. By the time there's releasing exclusive next gen games the console should theoretically be cheaper, unless Sony keeps the price up or even increasing the price.

But by logic, it could be cheaper or have a pro/black variant by that.

Because the PS4 versions look like shit and are also holding back the PS5 versions. This mentality is what’s keeping this gen from getting started. Move on

I have almost no time to play games anymore because I work and study full time.

Also, I have a huge multi-generational backlog starting from NES games, which I'll probably never clear.

But the main reason is that a PS5 would be a waste of money for me, as I don't play games for graphics and the only current gen exclusive is care about is Ratchet.

Not to mention that the current PS5 is really too big and looks like shit, hoping for a nicer slim version.
