Final Fantasy VII Rebirth producer Yoshinori Kitase teased “a big announcement” about Final Fantasy, but “unrelated to Final Fantasy VII” in his New Year’s greeting on the official Final Fantasy website.

The full message is as follows:

Happy New Year to you all.
Final Fantasy XVI is set to release this year, which means Yoshi-P needs your support now more than ever. Cheer him on as he gives it his all down the stretch!
Also! Development is picking up speed on the title I’m producing, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth I’m sure many of your collective imaginations are running wild trying to picture how we’ll recreate some of the game’s most iconic scenes, and we’ll have more to share about that when the time is right.
There’s also another big announcement unrelated to Final Fantasy VII that I can’t say anything about just yet.
Rest assured we’re working hard to make sure 2023 is the most exciting year yet.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Producer
Yoshinori Kitase

A remake of Final Fantasy IX and a remastered version of Final Fantasy Tactics appeared on a list of games leaked by NVIDIA back in September 2021. Many of those games have since been announced, including Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamer Edition, Kingdom Hearts IV, and Tactics Ogre: Reborn.

I hope it's not FF9 related. I really dislike some aspects of that that game. It's better than 7 and 8, but the cute, fisher-price art style does nothing for me.

If they're going to remake FF9, then I want a realistic art style and the combat system from 15. Also, make the story darker, FFS.

...

Did you even play FF9? It's among the darkest FF's already.

Vivi alone man.

Final Fantasy 9 remake and Final Fantasy XIII trilogy remaster port, please. EDIT: Console ports for Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions would also be amazing.

I hope Square Enix sells the Final Fantasy IP to a another studio that is able to produce actual Final Fantasy games. Let's face it, Final Fantasy is not Final Fantasy anymore, it has become a generic action game that has completely lost all of its Final Fantasy DNA.
I'm not excited one bit about whatever future Final Fantasy annoucment they make, because I know it's gonna be shit and simply not a "Final Fantasy" game.
But others, especially those who haven't played the old, REAL Final Fantasy games, might still get excited, as much as any 3rd person action game fan gets excited when a new 3rd person action game gets announced.

You don't want FF9, got it.

The contrast between art style and darker story undertones is half of what makes it. If its not yours, that's fine.

But you just seem to want a different game.

I actually like FF9. I found it more enjoyable than 7 and 8, but the art style kills me.

If there was a remake, then it needs to get the same remake treatment that 7 had. New, realistic art style and a modern combat system. That's the least that I expect.

If it's the leaked FF9 remake it would be incredibly good news for me, it's also rare for a title with that kind of art style to get a proper AAA budget and high end graphics so it would be a project interesting on multiple levels.
I doubt that it would be split in as many parts as FF7R though, it might be a single game or two parts.

They should just make a 1 to 1 remake. Get Uematsu to oversee the music so it retains the atmosphere, find the best voice actors in the world, and make it look like the image in OP.

Dirge of Cerebus remaster.

You joke, but they're almost certainly going to do something with it, whether it be a remaster, a remake (haha), adapted plot elements or a DLC for Rebirth/Part 3. Four years ago, I wouldn't be convinced, but seeing Genesis and Nero/Weiss in Remake related content doesn't feel like something they'd put in haphazardly.

Tactics would be such a perfect game for Switch. Also, I'd much rather a FF8 remake and a chance for them to do the English version and story justice. Fix the mistakes that were made. FF8 is the bastard middle child and underappreciated. FF9 was so unmemorable overall with the exception of Vivi. Zidane is one of the worst lead characters ever.

Final Fantasy IX Remake, 3 parts again.

I'm pretty sure 100%, Nvidia doesn't miss.

2020 - FF VII REMAKE
2023 - FF XVI
2024 - FF VII Rebirth
2025 - FF IX REMAKE
2027 - FF VII Revenge
...

FF8 is the better game and more deserving of a remake over FF9. Fight me.

For fans that were calling for a straight up remake Final Fantasy IX is the much better fit. A memorable cast of characters, beautiful scenery, locations and simplicity and elegance in it’s storytelling means it doesn’t really need much self improvement aside a graphical overhaul and gameplay update.

Final Fantasy VIII lacked any depth to its characters, the world map looking back seemed bare and empty and it’s story about the antagonists control and manipulation of space-time through a higher dimension would go over the head of the average consumer, proven by the constant complaints about the oprhanage twist not fully grasping how it directly tied in with the actions of the antagonist and games other themes of dreams, synchronicity and fate. It just wasn’t very well told.

I still love the game but I feel in retrospect the team focused way too much on producing flashy and big budget FMV’s to stand out on release over the actual gameplay experience itself. I think FFVIII would be much better suited for some sort of sequel or spinoff where they can still have full creative control over the making of it.

What even….

1. Disses VII-IX
2. Says they want combat system to be like FFXV, which has, like, the sloppiest and most unbalanced combat system known to man
3. Claims story isn’t dark
4. Says “I really dislike [FFIX]” and then says in another post “I actually like FF9.”

Okay!

After the FFVII remake I have no interest in them touching IX. I'll stick with the original and its painfully slow combat and poorly thought-out skill system.
Not a fan of the new Tactics Ogre update either to be frank.

Only thing I want from Final Fantasy at this point is a World of Final Fantasy sequel. I don't trust them with anything else.

Absolutely no reason it has to be "realistic" you can get a huge increase in fidelity while still keeping the stylized look that makes it great.

FF7 is one thing it was genuinely held back not just by the tech itself but by being the first game square did really using that tech, FF9 on the other hand looks cartoony because it's just meant to.

Both FF9 and FFT have deep connections to Hiroyuki Ito...He was actually featured in Famitsu's creator's new years interview, without saying anything interesting lol

Okay!

Yes. 9 is better than 7 & 8. IMO, every mainline FF game has gotten better with each entry, with 15 being the peak of the series.

Combat system in 15 is fantastic. Not sure why people hate 15 so much?

I do like FF9. I was supposed to say I didn't like certain aspects, with the art style being the biggest issue I have.

The art style is what I like the most. I'm so tired of games constantly chasing realism and forgetting they are games on the way there. That's why I also like Kingdoms of Amalur, it makes zero attempt to be realistic.
If I want dark realistic stories, I'll watch the news.

I can’t continue this conversation without insulting you and XV so this ends here.
