MLB is multplatform while Horizon is not

GT7 and Horizon look to have done pretty well to me, don't think they udnerperformed at all.
MLB is a baseball yearly franchise that sells 1-2 million max. It should not be outselling Sony's AAA games that sell 20 million copies.

GT7 definitely underperformed. If it didnt, Sony wouldve released its numbers like they did GOW.

yep. MLB used to be a 1 million seller. Lets assume its now a 1.5 million seller with Xbox and Switch. Maybe a little less since its free on gamepass, but man this does not look good for Horizon and GT7. Looks like TLOU, GT7 and Horizon all underperformed. probably the reason why Sony didnt release any sales figures for these games despite releasing sales figures for GOW, Ratchet, Demon Souls and Returnal. I wonder if they are waiting for them to hit 5 million before announcing the sales. HFW and GT7 should be over 2 million worldwide by now. TLOU probably around 1 million.

I remember getting a lot of shit for pointing out that SOny themselves admitted they saw a massive decline in software sales in the April-June quarter. I was like Horizon, MLB and GT7 should have better legs than that. They had a good Jan to March quarter with 14 million sales for all first party titles, but only 6 million the quarter after that down from 10.6 million the year before during the same quarter. And they count bundles.

I wonder if these games were more ambitious pushing next gen tech if things wouldve been different. More of the same might work for yearly cod games, but people buying Sony AAA games expect a lot more.

Bundles accounted for 20% of the sales in UK. Probably the same here. And yes, NPD doesnt count bundles.
Have you been living under a rock? GT7 has been charting consistently and doing franchise history numbers.

I don't think any of the Big 3 release specific numbers for the US or North America. The closest we get is Nintnedo giving numebrs for "The Americas".

Nintendo and sony only mention sales during milestones and of course quarterly reports. Microsoft are the ones who seem to be super vague and specific. They never disclose actual figures either to back it up to the point where we have people literally making shit up throwing all sorts of numbers around. Who cares if your behind? Show some balls and give us a solid figure to go off.

Ps5 should take it this year, switch will probably see another 20% is decline, and I think we will see a slim ps5 ease manufacturing this year putting it in the 20 million range
That's a bold statement, especially if they have their first official price cut (not a fluctuation adjustment). They advertise the price cut, bundle it with a free game, do limited edition Switches, and they're still wheeling and dealing from the top.

Circuit racing games aren’t as popular as it used to be in America. Yeah it definitely underperformed.

Currently, Switch is at the end of year five in its lifecycle. Probably passed its prime, but still a top seller all around especially at Christmas time.
Yes I know. All I'm saying its that that might change, exactly because the Switch is past its prime(entering the 7th year on market) and the PS5 haven't reached its prime yet.

The underpowered switch absolutely bodying every console after 6 years and no price cut will never not be funny. This is significantly more impressive than the PS2 and DS as both needed heavy price cuts to reach such numbers.

MLB The Show 21 did 2 million in its first 3 momths, and that one wasn't on Switch. So MLB The Show 22's sales for all of 2022 are probably over 2 million, and the vast majority of those sales would have been in the US.

Horizon: Zero Dawn did 7.6 million worldwide in its first year, so probably around 2.5-3 million of that was in the US.

So its not that surprising that the two games would chart close to each other like this.

2020 - 4rt year
2021 - 5th year
2022 - 6th year

Once march begins, of course.Switch completes 6 years on March, but enters the 7th year after march is over. Switch is older than you think.

After all the daily advertisement threads we had during November and December about the fantastic and unmissable deals for Series S even below 200$, that's a big holiday defeat that MS got there, I don't know where they're going with their prices after all those devaluing deals.
Switch is still doing great but it's finally declining (and it's totally normal), PS5 did really well but there's room to do much better in 2023 with a continous good supply, a Slim model and all the great games coming.
If something is "flying off the shelves" it doesn't need deals and discounts under every type of way you can muster, even getting other third party companies involved, like Verizon. All a part of the "race to the bottom" and they're the only one's running at the moment.

Why? Look at the list of best selling hardware for each year posted above. It's almost always a handheld like Gameboy, DS, 3DS and now Switch has taken over. Kids are the biggest userbase and there will always be new kids every year. Thats who these new switches are selling to. Everyone says its not a handheld, but it sells because its a handheld. Because no dad wants to share his fucking tv with a kid who wants to play minecraft all day.

PS and Xbox are doing their own thing while Nintendo has all but abandoned third party. No CoD in almost a decade now. I believe 2012's Blops 2 was the last one. No Ass Creed. No Battlefield. No star wars game. None of the big AAA IPs are going to that console which means Nintendo is basically losing out on a lot of third party revenue and royalties. Not that they give a shit but thats a decision they made to leave the traditional console market to Sony and MS.

Switch's success came at the expense of Nintendo having to leave their console market while forcing arguably the most talented developers in the industry to make games on dated hardware. There is nothing funny about that.

So looking at the charts again and I may be mistaken about Crisis Core. #10 on the Switch chart is definitely higher than #7 on the PS chart, so we can't even say that the PS version was the best selling one (though there's a very real chance it was).

Bascially, it was harder to get into the Switch top 10 than the PS or XB top 10.

It sells becuase its hybrid with a very strong software lineup that apepals to a wide range of ages. The version of the Switch that is actually a handheld, and also the one which is the cheapest, is by far the least popular version.

Horizon looks to be doing roughly in line with the first game (probably a bit better than it once bundles are counted), so I think its doing fine.

The GT franchise has definitely declined from the PS2 days, no doubt about that.

Notice anything missing on the 2017 NPD?

Dude, just reread what I said. The Switch turn 6 years old in March. Once its 6 years and a day old, it enters its seventh year. The same way that the 18th century is every year between 1701 up until 1800, the seventh year refers to every day after its sixth year, up until it is actually 7 years old.

Yeah, but that explains the first 100 million sales. Just like the PS2 and PS4, it appeals to a wide range of ages with a very strong software lineup. However, what we are witnessing is something so incredible and quite frankly outrageous that it only happens with handhelds. It is following the same trajectories of the DS and Gameboy before it. the first year, yes. All the millenial and Gen x Zelda fans bought it. But 6 years after launch, it is still selling like hot cakes when the PS5 itself is selling like hot cakes? It is mostly because it is appealing to kids and because its handheld.

I am mostly speaking from experience because my son literally knocks on my door at 5:30 everyday so he can play my PS5 when all i want to do after work is unwind myself. Whenever hes busy with a switch game, i dont have to worry about it. All of his cousins, his friends, the siblings of his friends and cousins have a switch of their own. You will almost never see two PS5s in one household but if you have two kids plus an adult gamer dad, that dude isnt sharing his switch with his sons and his sons are not sharing their switch with each other.

For all intent and purposes, the switch sells like a handheld.

This is very likely to happen, Switch has climbed then peaked and now is declining by around 4 million a year. The PS5 is on the way up and if Sony can supply enough then I see no reason they can't hit 20 million in 2023.

Global calendar year shipments

NSW

2017:
14.86 million (released in March)
2018: 17.41 million
2019: 20.21 million
2020: 27.39 million
2021: 23.67 million
2022: likely around 20.00 million

Games are not developed on a whim. This game started dev in 2018. Way before even Chernobyl was released let alone TLOU. It had nothing to do with the show. It was made by VSG as a side project which ND took over after shipping TLOU2.
Ideas/strategy don't start during development. The decision to work on a TV show on the series could have easily influenced the development of TLOU remake, before anything on the show was finalized. They could have decided before 2018 that they wanted to work on the show and release an updated version of the game, or if it is as you say, then the stars just aligned, the side project existed (whatever the reason for it was) and when ND decided to have a show on the game, they wanted to take over the project.

It sells like a hybrid. It is "unprecedented" because a hybrid console is unprecedented, as in there aren't any products quite like it.

Why people keep trying to find patterns on the past for products that don't even have a past to begin with

Sure but we already know the entire history of this remake and it was created because the VSG studios heads wanted to make a name for themselves a la bluepoint. The whole story was explored in great detail by Jason Schrier who was mocked at the time for even suggesting Sony would remake TLOU so early. This was before the show was even rumored.

I am willing to concede that its possible they decided to release instead of cancel it because they had the show coming. IIRC, Jason said Herman didnt like the remake and wanted to cancel it but it somehow went through and ND took over from VSG. Though even in that case, Neil was likely gone for 2 years making the show and that might have forced ND to take over while their main director/writer was gone.

Jason may not have understood the reason for the project existing? I mean, it is possible. There is more to it then I was thinking based on what you are saying but I still think it is a bit silly to expect the Remake to a game to do blockbuster sales on its third run, we had the remaster thing before it. I am sure there are other series that may have but they are likely not a single player story focused linear game.

The abllity to have more than one per household definitely helps Switch, but then again people upgrading from PS4 to PS4 Pro also helped that platform. So its not a handheld-only thing.

Switch has the hardware sales of a successful Nintendo handheld, but its got the software sales of a successful Nintnedo console. It's hybrid nature is more important than its handheld nature.

But my main opposition is to the phrase "it sells because its a handheld". It would be like saying "PS5 sells becasue its a console"

The original horizon (which went on to sell over 20m copies) fell off the charts early in the year
Not quite true, Zero Dawn was in the top 10 in November 2017. It was pushed out in December by Battlefront 2, Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart 8.

It's just the phrasing. Whenever i trash this industry's cross gen practices, I like to use THIRD Year even though the consoles are only 2 years old. It makes it sound worse lol but it's completely accurate.

For example, once we hit Switch 6th anniversary in March, I plan to make a thread about how we are in the SEVENTH year of Switch and Nintendo has yet to release an AAA Metroid game, and a sequel to Mario Odyssey.

I kid but people dont realize that Mario Odyssey 2 and whatever retro studios has been working on since 2020 are going to be switch titles that wont take advantage of the Switch 2 specs just because they have been in dev for half a decade now. Cross gen is going to hit Nintendo fans hard.

Are many people expecting the next game from the 3D Mario team or Prime 4 to be Switch 2 exlcisive? I think both ccould be cross-gen, or we even see both launch this year only on Switch.
Well, it is one third of the price of the PS5 or the XSX.
The best selling Switch is the $349 one. The Lite makes up 20% of Switch sales in the Americas.
the 3ds had to compete with the wii and wii u. the switch doesnt have any internal competition
Right, Switch sells well because all of Nintendo's teams and partners are making games for it.

So? Mario Kart is one of the few gems Nintendo has to offer. The reason their old games keep selling is because they only have a few good games to own. MK8 wouldn't sell if they released a new one every two to three years.

People said the same thing about GT Sport but from the info we have it did around 8-9 million.

That's really nothing to be ashamed of. Mario Kart has been a mainstay on the top sellers for years now and Mario Kart isn't competing with GT in any case.

MK8 sells because it is a ridiculously popular game and Switch's most successful game. Nintendo has quite a bit more than a "few good games to own" if we are going by sales. Nintendo has more games on the full year top 20 list than Microsoft and Sony combined. That's because Nintendo isn't playing in the same playground as MS and Sony which is shown in the fact that only one game on Nintendo's full year top seller list is shared on PS or Xbox: Lego Star Wars. So Nintendo has plenty of games, just not the same games as Xbox and PS.

Who cares? The series is doing as well as it ever has: https://www.neogaf.com/threads/gran...d-series-total-sales-over-90-million.1648405/

GTS is roughly 10 million sold and GT7 around 5 Million which is much faster than GTS and has not received a permanent price cut yet.

Prime 4 has alredy been announced as a Switch game, so its very very unlikely to be next-gen only. Obviously I've not spoken to all Nintendo fans, but most posts I've seen are expecting a period of mostly cross-gen games with a few exclusives (similar to the PS4 to PS5 transisiton)

What about the normal Switch? Also, was that the price on Black Friday as well?
The hardware split in the Americas for the first half of Nintendo's current financial year are:

Switch OLED - 44%
Switch - 36%
Switch Lite - 20%

I'm afriad I couldn't find a comprehensive list of all the Black Friday deals for Switch in 2022. The best I could see was Walmart selling the regular Switch, Mario Kart 8 and 3 nmonths of Nintendo Online for $299.

GT7 definitely underperformed. If it didnt, Sony wouldve released its numbers like they did GOW.
MLB The Show 21 sold more than 2 million copies on PS and Xbox. With Nintendo and a growing market, The Show 22 would have sold 3-4 million copies now.

And MLB is an American sport, and almost all copies are sold in U.S.. If MLB The Show 22 sold 3 million MLB copies in the U.S., it means Horizon Forbidden West sold more than 3 million copies in U.S. alone. It must be near or over by 10 million copies worldwide.

the 3ds had to compete with the wii and wii u. the switch doesnt have any internal competition
Doesn't mean jackshit at the end when your internal competition failed right off the bat like WiiU and needed to compete with real competition, which were PS4 and XB1.

3DS also needed to have an emergency price reduction after only 5 months on the market from $250 to $170 in order to compete with other consoles, while Nintendo Switch has none of that yet.

In term of dollar sales, Switch is behind PS5 and not at the last place.
