In 2005 science created the perfect machine. Over time, man has destroyed that machine. These are the remains.

I listen to Nextlander still. Fire escape felt like I was wasting my time. It chased rabbits too much for me and Mike is grating.

Jeff I don’t care about.

Dan is a lot of fun.

GB was way too platform partisan, they rode high during the 360 era but after that...

I'll never forget the TVTVTV E3 and their reaction to it.

Ryckert was at gameinformer at one point right? I think I remember him from silly play throughs they would do. He was fun.

Mike just tries far too hard. I’m sure he’s a nice guy away from the podcast but it’s a difficult listen when he’s let loose. He was actually ok at GameSpot though as he couldn’t go crazy.

Maiden Voyage Maiden Voyage Thanks for the thread, excellent job!

I’m finding Nextlander a chore to listen to now. I’ve just spent some time with their latest podcast and they all sound so…miserable.

Now, we never know what’s going on in someone’s personal life. But the chances are that ALL three of them aren’t having a bad time right now. So what gives?

They’re making a lot of money now, they’re no longer tied to the evil corporate overlords which was Giant Bomb.

But they’re just so…bored now? Maybe it’s because I’m consuming a lot of content elsewhere these days but Vinny, Alex and Brad are going through the motions or at least that’s how it feels. Especially Vinny. But he did leave a podcast earlier last week as he was going to a funeral so hope everything is ok with him.

I’m no longer a patron of theirs because I didn’t feel that the content was frequent enough or rather, I don’t want to listen to hours of discussion about Star Trek. When I was a patron, someone asked “why are your podcasts always two hours long”? And it got me thinking. Everything is so formulaic with Nextlander. Like, you can bet your last dollar they will wind down 90% of their content on the 2 hour mark.

I respect that people have lives. But Nextlander feels like they’re just clocking in and clocking out of a job.

I’ve said it before, they’re good people and I wish them the very best. But they really need to stop covering video games because the passion simply isn’t there and they’re not very good at hiding it.

Vinny on todays podcast referred to Thanksgiving as a problematic holiday......I just about ran off the road at that take.

I've been re-listening to some old Bombcasts and he might as well be a different person from back then. He was so much sharper and more than willing to make a poor-taste joke.

Vinny worked on Chapel show so yes he was a lot different. People change over time and when young we say some things not thinking about the consequences. But they are very different now.

I found it interesting on the last Nextlander Q&A how they addressed the relationship with Jeff. It seems like it made them all uncomfortable.

Do you have a link to the video?
Its from a Patreon Q&A so it is behind a paywall. The gist of it was someone called in and asked, "will you ever do any videos with Jeff Gerstmann" Alex replied saying that he knew this question would come up and they discussed it in a very stiff manner. I found a reddit post talking about it but the site is down, I dont know if any one else can elaborate further from my points.

It just seems that they are doing a bunch of content with all of the other previous GB employees except for him. I don't know if I am just reading into this too much though lol.

When Rorie talks he always gives me anxiety with his heavy breathing as if he's super nervous talking. Never like the guy.

even abby has simps oh god.
Looks like she had the $ value display removed from the Patreon page. Subs were in the 290s when I posted that and now they're at 280. I can't imagine in this economy people wanting to subsidize another person's lifestyle of rarely streaming. I am genuinely curious what the discord community is like but I don't hate myself so I will happily remain ignorant.

I’m not enjoying Nextlander at all now. Brad is so over gaming, the guy is fucking miserable.

I was listening to their Twin Peaks watch cast and Brad sounds so disinterested that it actually offends me that people pay actual money for this.

Hats off to Vinny and Alex who do a fine job. Weird thing is, Brad seems so upbeat on that Tech podcast he does with the insufferable Will Smith (no not THAT Will Smith). I really like Brad but that Will guy is the kid who was bullied at high school and now he’s ultra arrogant about fucking everything. The guy is a know it all, or at least he thinks he knows it all.

if he talks about books, you better damn well listen
Jeff Gerstmann has the best of the successor podcasts and I love listening to him, but his taste in games is generally very boring and he would do better with a co-host or two.

The Nextlander guys, by contrast, cover lots of interesting games, but are kind of boring commentators. I echo the opinion that Brad is way better on his Tech Pod.

Fire Escape has its moments but it's too bloated. The Giant Bombcast is now, sadly, trash.

Remap Radio (formerly Waypoint), arguably a GB successor, is good. Patrick has interesting taste in games and well-articulated opinions, and Rob Zacny even more so...he's absolutely brilliant. The rest of the crew are bleh.

I miss Austin Walker having more of a podcast presence (I know he's still on a few). He's probably my overall favourite games podcaster, along with Jeff Gerstmann, Rob Zacny, and Tom Chick.

I agree with a lot of this.

Jeff definitely has the best insight into the industry as a whole and I think his podcast is better for it. Just a lot of good anecdotes/contextual stories that he can pull from. His taste in games is very defined at this point though and to your point, having a co-host or two might help. He just played BG3 for a couple hours as an example and basically hated it - not unexpected, and the game isn't for everyone so having the perspective of someone who it's not for is needed, but could help having someone with him who could provide a different perspective. He also tends to be aggressively...obtuse? about games he doesn't immediately jive with.

Nextlander, yeah, sadly just kind of boring. Vinny is good shit but Brad and Alex are both just so matter of fact.

Fire Escape is barely even a game podcast most of the time. If it wasn't for Dan I probably wouldn't listen. Mary and Mike just also seem to get a lot of stuff blatantly wrong about games they've played.

The one thing I disagree on is Bombcast, which I've actually really been enjoying lately. Grubb and Jan are a solid duo imo, Jan I've always been a pretty big fan of. The rest of the crew depends on the episode, Dan is obviously good, Tam/Lucy are pretty solid depending on the games, Jeff B is hit or miss depending on the topic.

It's nice to have so many podcasts to choose from but I think they'd be better if they were a bit more consolidated - you could make two amazing podcasts if you combined people from the four of these (which I guess is what we had at GB before).

Fire Escape is too much “member that tiiiiiiiiime?” for me.

Next Lander sounds a bit too tired

Jeff is the real shit. Can’t do it every week but once in a while I hear that Sonic the hedgehog ass intro Music and I’m like alright what’s my fat spirit animal up to lately I bet he’s got a new energy drink I’ll never try

I stopped listening to Nextlander and Jeff Gerstmann. Nextlander is too mopey about the world (climate, politics, lgbtxyz) and Jeff's podcast is just too long.

I tried to use both podcasts as a replacement for the old GB but they're just not. It was a great period but it's over. 🤷‍♂️

I’m with you on Nextlander…Alex’s downer attitude needs a foil like a Dan, and Brad and Vinnie just aren’t that kind of personality. Gerstmann I’m still down with, if he’s talking something I’m interested in. Like his takes on the MS leaks were super interesting and seemed on point. Stuff like that makes me tune in to get his take, though it’s not like an automatic I’m gonna listen every week like the old Bombcast days. The energy drink reviews are an automatic skip ahead, I have no idea who that’s for.

I’ll just say I’m also glad they’ve all seemingly landed on their feet doing their own thing. Alex just bought a house and I’m happy for him…just don’t want to necessarily listen to him without someone like Dan needling him about stuff to break through the gloom

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Figured some of you guys would like this.

Man, this was a roller coaster. Reliving some of the early giant bomb content, especially things with Ryan.

It's a part of gaming media history that can never be replicated again, especially in this day and age.

I miss Ryan Davis. I'm older now than he was when he passed away, he was too fucking young.
