PSVR2 | Review Thread

Looks like the hardware is very good. My only issue at this moment in time is that other than GT7 and the RE games there's not much else that I want to play or don't already have on the Quest (or quest via PC).

So I'll wait for now but for people new to VR or only upgrading from the PSVR1 this looks solid.

Also the steam deck just became available where I live so I just had to.

Here's a "Playstation" accessory that works on the PC. The Playstation branding has been used on numerous products outside of the consoles.

. . .also a DISC isn't an accessory. What kind of disingenuous comment is that?
You seriously expected Sony to make a device, sold at a likely loss or tiny profit, compatible with PC, where games are bought in non-sony storefronts and where they get ABSOLUTELY NOTHING per game sale?
There is no profit in hardware sales, all the profit comes from software.

Sony is not a charity institution.

A lot of PC users seem to be salty that PSVR2 costs 500$ and the most similar PC equivalent costs at least double that.

PCVR is fragmented and headsets are produced in smaller amounts by order, so obviously they are more expensive for the same tech.

Sony is an electronics manufacturer with a big Image and Sensors division where most of the stuff and R&D for PSVR2 comes from, then there is an ever growing install base to whom Sony can use its marketing power to advertise psvr2.

You seriously expected -

Yeah I'm gonna stop you right there. I said it was a non-starter for me. I don't need a pseudo-economics lecture about the profit woes of a multibillion dollar multinational corporation. I have no idea, clue or care about the "PC VR market" - I simply am not interested in something, as good as it is, that is only for use on a console that is getting less and less use now that I have a decent PC rig.

Reviews looking good. Something that really resonated with me in Eurogamer's review was how he'd forget it was even there whereas with the Quest 2 he'd be adjusting it every so often. This was a problem I had as well. Going any tighter hurt (headache) so it'd always shift ever so slightly.

Also really impressed with the eye tracking and how it would show you your eye movement during setup and then uses it to get the lens set up in the correct position. Again, a problem I had with the Quest 2 was the 3 positions for the lens was never quit right. It was serviceable but it always felt just a little off. With PSVR2 you can get it dead on for whatever fucked up shape my your head and eyes are. Win!

This is the bit i'm pumped about.

Bye then. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Which has nothing to do with Sony going to top developers running some of the most popular games in the industry to develop VR exclusives in a market with bad software sales, something they have not even done for the PS5.
While I am not saying there won't be VR exclusives, because there will be, but I don't think it even needs them. You seem to look at VR as this whole other thing, I look at it as just another controller interface. The same way I look at the $500+ cockpit or $300+ racing wheel... a game like GT7, or arsetto, wasn't made for VR, a franchise like Ace combat didn't start off as a VR IP, but VR could ultimately be the BEST way to play such games.

Sooner or later, devs would figure out how to incorporate VR into an FPS or some other genre in such a way that the games of the genre are better off for it. It would become one of these things that you won't think too much of until you go to someone's house, play a game you already own in a way you didn't think possible, and go buy one on your way back home.

Even dual analog sticks took over a generation for devs to get right and properly implement in games. VR is in the same pace right now, and that's why I applaud sony for even trying. Give the devs time to come to grips with it, and I am sure we will see some pretty great stuff. And VR piggybacking onto existing established franchises or IPs now is the safest way to go. Cause make no mistake, it cost far less doing that than porting the game onto a whole new platform.

GT7, or arsetto, wasn't made for VR,

Actually according to Polyphony, GT7 was made with VR in mind.

Also, steering wheels and other optional peripherals generally don't have their own large library of exclusive games. That would be like comparing Kinect to a light-gun.

Ok, then let me rephrase, the GT franchise, was not made for VR. GT is a racing game at the end f the day. And it looks like and plays like every GT game before it. It now will have full support for VR, which doesn't mean can only work with a VR headset.

And on the peripheral...I didn't say one is the same as the other. I said, `to me`, I look at VR like a peripheral. like another way to experience games that I am already playing...with the added benefit of having games designed specifically for it. Which ina, just means it ultimately has a better chance of doing better than a stand-alone peripheral, because it allows you to do different things. And I chose those examples to make a point, If I or people are wing to spend $300 for a racing wheel and $500+ for a cockpit, just to play ONE genre of games, you see where I am going with that right?

Heck, right now am just waiting for someone to go in-depth into just how the theatre mode works and looks to decide if I should buy it or not. VR gaming isn't even the primary reason I want it.

The Quest 2 is a good PC VR headset. Not sure why people insist on acting like it is a piece of junk. It has similar if not greater PPD than the PSVR2, it has excellent tracking likely better than the PSVR2 just judging from these reviews, has hand tracking, has wireless connectivity.
It has limitations, low FOV, LCD screens, fresnel lenses, no HDR - but it is a perfectly acceptable VR headset.
Quest is a terrible pcvr. Even wired itā€™s still sending compressed video. It looks terrible. Try playing dirt in vr or any darker game.
Itā€™s low hz, compressed, heavy as fuck, clunky with oculus software and steam vr combined. And itā€™s lcd.
Even rift S was much better for pc.

But that seems to be the only thing it will be able to do at launch. I have not seen anything on how it works with other VR apps like YouTube VR or a VR browser for example. I am interested to see more on this but I guess we will have to wait until its released.

Any word if old psvr games will get free updates? If my glasses work better Iā€™d prob rather give my money to Sony than Facebook again. Down side I have a ton of shit on the quest, but I also have a bunch on psvrā€¦

A good theatre mode is enough for me. Just need details on how it looks and what is the virtual screen size equivalent. I was thinking about getting a TV for my bedroom, mostly only for gaming sessions and plex where I am too lazy to go to the living room. Which would mean I have a second PS5. If theatre mode in this is any good, I would take a VR headset over buying a 55-inch TV for my room.

do we know if it supports VRR?
No, because VR headsets use a sort of black frame insertion in order for motion clarity to be as high as possible. You can't have both black frame insertion and VRR at the same time. On the plus side for the people like blur busters who champion motion clarity above everything 120 fps games should have CRT level clarity.

It supports 120Hz and with the regular (albeit shitty) strap is lighter than the PSVR2 and it's only slightly heavier than the PSVR2 with the elite strap. You can stream at up to 150Mbps with HEVC which is more than sufficient and is pretty close to HDR 4k bluray. Virtual Desktop is completely fluid and easy to use.
It does have some latency and it does have lcd screens.

Well I feel better about the purchase after seeing several reviews.

Definitely looks like a very solid piece of hardware. High end VR at a good price. Well kind of pricey but looks like your getting what you pay for in this case.

Edit Also for those of us without a nice OLED TV enjoy your new OLED TV. Can't wait to use the media apps as well.

Naw man, in darker games the compression artifacts rear its ugly head. I played through alyx and tried both wired and wireless and the HEVC codec isn't close to native. You add about 20-30 ms of latency in the case of airlink as well. It's definitely playable, but a far cry from native.

It's nowhere close to a "HDR 4k blu ray." The quest 2 just doesn't have the contrast because of it's lcd panel with no local dimming. The lenses also have awful godrays which would be a nightmare with ultra bright scenes.

Thinking of picking this up for GT7. Any indication about lack of availability at launch? It's up for pre-order right now for next week but I want to see GT7 VR reviews before I pull the trigger. Would prefer to just walk instore and buy one.

It's playable, but certainly a far cry from a native experience. I used link/airlink because that's the only way to play alyx on the quest 2. The compression was very noticeable around lamp posts, or any light source; especially when you are in a darker environment. Link/airlink works better on very bright games where the compression isn't as noticeable. It's something you can live with to play a really good game, but I opt to play the quest 2 version of games even when they come with a rift copy so i'm not dealing with compression and I get much lower latency.

$550 dollars is a lot of money, but it's not for a VR headset of this quality. If this was released as a pcvr headset it would easily go for 1k. The valve index plus two controllers for comparison still sells for $750 and is always out of stock. It's also very old and outdated at this point. For an entire kit which is what you need to play anyway it cost 1k.

What I mean is the compression isn't really the main issue, it's close to what a 4K bluray would look like on a budget no brand LCD TV. I mean as soon as you turn it on the gray blacks are obvious.

You don' see compression artifacts on 4k blu rays because you aren't zoomed in with lenses like you are in VR. They are very obvious on link on the quest 2.

I've noticed several people online have posted similar since the reviews have come out. Probably someone is working on a video as we speak.

I think worst case, first shipment sells out.

I should say I guess instead of I think because I don't have a thing to back that up lol.

For people that ordered from Amazon. If Amazon is showing later than the 22nd, go to shipping options and save and it will change to the 22nd for delivery.

I wish this was wireless. It would have been day 1 for me. PS5 is big and I'm scared I'll tug on the wire and knock over the TV. :messenger_loudly_crying:

This confirms that PSVR2 is the final evolution of its ancient predecessor, the Glasstron and the HMZ family of head mounted TV displays.

So, the Sony TV has been shrunk down to a headset. There is definitely an additional market for this. My theory that they will eventially sell a non-playstation headset is coming closer to reality. Sony would only allow porn if they can take the playstation label off the thing.

Not that I see anything wrong, but could you theoretically add something to the controllers to help increase tracking?

Specifically in darker rooms? Would be nice to play in a darker rooms and still have good tracking.
