After i read the hype threads about this game i expected the sequel to score a lot higher than the first game, it looks like its going to be about the same.

I just...the original is one of the few games I have not finished.

Why didn't they just give us what we want? (Ie, some epic like FFVI in this art style?)

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I'm working on the OT, it'll go up on Monday.

I'm really excited for this game. I did have it pre-ordered on the Switch, but changed my preorder to PC to save some money and to potentially play it in ultrawide (which made the first game look fucking amazing). Also Steam Deck Verified!

I really liked 1 but hit a point in chapter 2 where I was way underlevelled for every main way forward and cba grinding. Shame as I was proper into it. So I won't be buying this.

It's really been 5 years since the original?

Remember when ff7 8, 9 all came out in 3 to 4 year span? We were fed good back then...

The HD-2D initiative is efficient. Not all from the same team, but some overlap in staff. Also put out Live-A-Live and Triangle Strategy in that time. 4 games in 5 years including Octo 2.

OT was the most addictive game I played in 2020 thanks to Game Pass. Spent 80 hours on it, I just couldn’t turn it off.
I never saw the lack of significant interaction between the characters like a problem. They had a few skits here and there, but the individual quests were all interesting enough for me to care and to want to see each one’s ending. The only real disappointment was the secret final boss - godly music, but the grind required to beat it was horrendous and the secret “ending” you got from beating it felt like it was ripped from a NES game.

If OT II is just as good, it’s good enough for me.

I stumbled on the first game while out of town looking for something to play on xCloud in my hotel room. Figured a turn based game would be ideal for streaming. I've got 190 hours in the game. Amazing how addictive it is.

The first one had a lot of good ideas but just didn't resonate with me for whatever reason. I don't regret buying it (even at full price) but I wasn't exactly hyped for this game. Especially after the mobile game.

The demo for this was great and exceeded my expectations. I liked every character and the way they played and had to force myself to not waste too much time running around since I'm going to do it again on launch.

I love the first even if it gets kind of mixed reception. Although now it seems like people are split between it being "too easy" and "too grindy." It can't be both, people!

Anyway, very much looking forward to OT2. If it's anything like the first, the music alone will be worth the price of admission.

It’s all about breaking the defense and knowing the weaknesses. Story bosses usually aren’t too bad, unless you’re under-leveled

I like it on Switch for this reason. Easy to grind battles and watch a podcast.

omg lads I finally beat Tressa's chapter 2 boss last night! After some grinding (and reading a few walkthroughs).

Played the second game demo, so far the writing does seem better and the overall prevention is nicely improved.

I bought the first one in hype for $60. Turns out the dialog was insufferable, there was no interaction between the paths of the characters, and the graphics were merely passable/OK once they settled on me, nothing exciting. I just never got used to that 3D SNES with insane lighting and floating cardboard cutout people. It looks like a mock stage world instead of a merely pixelated one. I gave the cart to my then-15 year old sister and she injected it directly into her veins, beaten in like a week.

My thoughts as well. If the second game is just the same I'm unfortunately going to skip it. I hope they improved on all these things.

First game was such a disappointment. I was totally enamored with the demo, but by the time I had reached all the chapter 2s I was bored out of my mind.

It’s like 8 trash tier JRPG stories interleaved with each other. Bland characters, corny overly-wordy writing, boring ass battle system. Even the character abilities just served to add a layer of tedium (oh I found a locked chest, guess I have to make a second trip to this dungeon with the guy who can open locked chests, wow this is some cerebral strategy!!)

Everything I’ve seen of the second looks just as bad as the first. I feel like if these games released 25 years ago on PSX they would be (barely) remembered as some c-list JRPG curiosity that couldn’t hang with the big boys.

Want to buy it because the demo is so good but the first game ended up being one of my larger Square Enix disappointments, it ended up grindy, every chapter was the same formula, characters did not interact with each other. I fear this will end up the same, have any reviews mentioned if these issues were addressed?

First game just ended up a boring repetitive slog.

Funny, one review addressed those points. Gave it a 7.5

Yet I kept wishing that the characters would interact with each other more. Apart from skit conversations and several storylines where characters pair up with one another independent of their own narrative, there still isn’t much talk between party members. And the chapters where characters pair up are just that — pairings, where two people interact, and the rest of the party may as well not exist. As much as I appreciated these pairings for livening things up, I still want to see these characters talk to each other more.
Then there’s the structure of Octopath Traveler 2 itself, wherein every chapter follows the exact same formula. You enter a location, talk to some important person related to the character, use some Path Actions to solve a problem, contrive a way to visit a dungeon, fight a boss, and then wrap the chapter up in cutscenes.
While the content of each chapter is frequently engaging, the fact that each chapter is structured the exact same way causes it to get tiresome after a while. Which is a shame, because I like playing Octopath Traveler 2. Yet I couldn’t help but grow tired of it when things are repeated to this extent.

I'm glad that they seem to have made an effort to fix the previous game's biggest flaws.

I will likely wait for a significant sale either way, but good for them!

I never understood this criticism, I never grind with first game, not even once, in fact if you try match the recommended level it becomes too easy.

Same thing i heard against Shin Megami Tensei games but I played SMTV on hard difficulty and never grind, I never needed to.

I'm a sucker for all these new details in the demo.

Lots of little effects (clouds flying over the environments), allies motivating each other or yelling their names when they are in trouble during the fights, etc.

Obviously, it's still Octopath Traveler but completely improved, you can like it or not. Even in the writing, it already starts better.

It is though. Finishing the main 8 quest lines was easy. Then, the end where you get the true ending with all the quest lines merging, was incredibly difficult and took a ton of grinding.

I still loved the game.
