Would you buy PSVR2 Pro?

Please, this thread is for PSVR2 owners/potential owners only.

I really want pancake lenses without the mura-causing filter, bigger sweet spot, and wireless would be nice too although not totally necessary IMO. (I know pancake lenses seemingly don't work that well with OLED displays, but I really hope Sony can figure out that part). Almost everything about PSVR2 is great except the lenses just leave so much to be desired that I find it a shame really as Sony have some of the best lenses in the world through their Pro-camera division so I can't help but feel they should have either made pancake lenses work with OLED or just have gone with LCD.

Anyway, after the initial hype has worn off, I am left feeling wanting more, so I went and bought a PICO 4:

For $370, this was a super sweet investment. It's got pancake lenses, there's motorised IPD (this serves mainly to lock the IPD in place instead of that silly dial), the light strip on the controllers better oriented... the main thing though is that the lenses provide edge-to-edge clarity, rock-solid image, and ridiculous sharpness. Oh, and no sweet spot... the whole thing is a sweet spot! I cannot say I've missed having OLED at all. I don't think the trade-off was worth it going with OLED and fresnel lenses. Blooming, edge blur, chromatic aberration, mura, non-rgb pixel grid (i.e. Pentile... ew), the list goes on with compromises. WIth Pico 4, I got none of those issues... it just works. I use the PICO 4 wired all the time, to provide power and data (Gbit ethernet) through a single cable and this means I can literally have a rock-solid VR experience anywhere around my house connecting to SteamVR in "Godlike" mode, 150mbps bitrate at 90fps (through Virtual Desktop)... and trust me, it looks absolutely stunning. I don't think it's just the better resolution (2160x2160 vs 2000x2040)... it has to be the improved optics.

After using Pico 4 for a week, I went back to PSVR2 and yeah, the luster is totally gone. Text is not sharp enough and all the image issues I mentioned earlier were still present but amplified now that I've experience pancake lenses.

Anyway, I hope we don't have to wait another 7 years for the next iteration of PSVR. Personally, I want it now cos I'm finding it difficult to go back to PSVR2.

Edit: Me, I'd buy a PSVR2 Pro today. The PSVR2 was a mistake IMO. $600 for fresnel lenses and locked into their ecosystem. Very difficult recommendation. I gave Sony every chance, refraining from buying any other VR headset between PSVR1 and PSVR2 and they've let me down. I love Sony, they're my favourite gaming brand by a long, long way which is why this thread was very difficult to write, but I believe they need to be called out.

It's not even been out a month and it's not good enough already?

How bad is the sweet spot and mura etc? You make it sound game breaking.
I wouldn't say it's totally game breaking, but the constant readjustment is soul crushing in a way cos even when I hit the sweet spot, the whole image leaves so much to be desired compared to the Pico.

There are a lot of good-great things about the PSVR2, like the comfort, which is far superior to Pico4, but the facial interface is just connected with magnets, so I'm sure I can replace it with something more comfortable.

edit: To be honest, PSVR2 was never good enough compared to what they're doing on the PC side. Doesn't matter if it's 1 month or 1 year, Sony could have done better and probably should have given us more. In the OP, I was mainly talking about hardware, but the software (outside of the games) is a total joke too. Again, another point of shame.

I think you should wait to PSVR3. Or better yet, wait to PSVR4. But you know PSVR5 will be even better, so maybe just wait for that. Although I heard PSVR6 is going to be a beast so you might wanna hold off on purchasing any headset before that.
Nope, I'm not waiting, and that's the point. This thread isn't about waiting. It's actually going out there and finding a solution that works for me today. Your comment is miraculously tone-deaf.

I wanted to buy a PSVR2 next year, but that sounds good. Maybe i should go for pc + Pico 4 and sell XSX + PS5.

I only care about smaller, lighter and eventually wireless. The sweet spot is small but totally manageable for me. So no, if the only change is the lenses and screen.

I'm really hoping quest 3 delivers a great middle ground robust pcvr experience. That would be perfect for me.

My rift s is getting long in the tooth.

Thanks for the insight from a user that owns the psvr2 and has experience with other pcvr headsets.

I would be interested in pico4 but according to this, FoV is still too small for my preference unfortunately

I wouldn't buy a PSVR2 so a Pro is out of the question. The problem isn't the hardware its the Sony support .

If sony had done the bare minimum and ported over at the least their own inhouse PSVR1 titles it would have gone a long way . As it stands I think PSVR2 is going to have a shorter life then PSVR1

Yeah, no problem at all. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about on the PC side and I'm left speechless with how far behind the curve Sony are with their software and optics, and just blown away by how active and vibrant the PC side is having ignored it for like 8 years because I was such a Sony VR believer.

My main complaint about PSVR2 are the cinematic mode options and there being basically no way to watch a movie with anything except a screen floating in infinite blackness. It beggars belief that Sony couldn't come up with something, anything else. It's like they are completely blind to what the competition are doing on the PC/standalone side.

Hell no. PSVR2 is fantastic the way it is and it cemented my good will towards VR from now on. Count me in for the eventual PSVR3, meanwhile I will throughly enjoy my phenomenal PSVR2.

Well so much for that. Haha.

Yes, I like the PSVR2 a lot, and will eventually get a PC VR headset when there's one more recommended (at the moment consensus is to wait for the new stuff around the corner), but a better PSVR2? Sure, why not. I mean if it was out tomorrow, a month after the release of the original it'd be a tougher pill to swallow, I guess I could just sell off the original one, but in another year or two, at least I'll have gotten my money's worth by then.

LCD would be a downgrade.

I want a PSVR3 just like 2, only with another doubling of the resolution and more FoV.

Either the product is something you like and want to buy, or it isn't.
Why are people always into the next thing, even before the current thing? Even before ps5 was released people talked about waiting for ps5 pro.

I am gald i'm not like that, and can actually enjoy things. Must be misserable to constantly wait for nothing, like those who pay for subs. and spend money waiting for someone in order to not spend money on that thing... lmfao. Sad!

I have to admit - the cable is annoying. It didn't bother me with PSVR1 - but the difference here is the addition of a 7 x 7 play space option. As soon as you add that the cable makes itself known immediately.

That being said - I would NOT but PSVR2 Pro. Playing Pavlov and a good experience with GT7 is the only reason I don't regret buying this one as it is. I'm looking at the 'upcoming releases' for VR2 and the recent reviews of Switchback and am not feeling especially great about the 800+CAD I spent.

What about RE8 / RE4 / Saints and Sinners 1/2? All three of those will definitely help you get your money's worth. Heard nothing but praise about Walkabout Mini Golf too, I expect that one will be especially fun if you haven't already played it on Quest 2, and even if so the visual upgrade is nice.

Lol at this thread...

while obviously not the best headset on the market. Psvr2 is knocking around in the highest echelon. Arguably the top 5

It's like saying "WoUlD yOu BuY a 5090" because the latest game for pc didn't run at native ultrawide 4k at 244hz 🤣🤣

It won't bother VR virgins much, but for experienced users its going to be very close to game breaking. These are the worst fresnel lenses of any mainstream headset (by far the smallest sweetspot on market), and the mura pattern is omnipresent and immediately noticeable (which probably isn't mura as the artifact's focal distance is different than the rest of the image and it doesn't exist on any other OLED headset like Quest 1, OG Vive, or CV1). I think its actually the diffusion layer Sony has added to hide SDE and the pentile pixel structure.
