Resident Evil 4 Review thread

Alright, getting close to the end of the Village but I can safely say this game surpasses the Original in the first Act so far. Nearly everything is better. Controls will be subjective, but the exploration, the house defense sequence, Luis, Ashley, it's all great.

Hardcore. Perfect difficulty and balance so far.
Do enemies take more than 1-2 bullets to the head\feet to get staggered and then kicked into oblivion?

I don't want super tanky enemies when i have to do basic crowd control, especially if the aim with controller i shit.

I'm playing on Hardcore, so I may not be able to answer that accurately. It generally takes 2-3 headshots for them to be staggered for me.

The graphics are the most dissapointing part so far tbh, wich is saying a lot, because everything is fantastic 👌

But im playing on the old PS4 so i have no idea how the other versions really look 🤭

Visually it looks very detailed and moody, the art is on point, the framerate is mostly fine, character models look fantastic, the IQ falls apart however, sometimes everything looks so blurry, animations on the Ganados are slowed down at a distance, and the textures can look pretty ugly and low quality , some look straight out of a PS3 game, RE VILLAGE for example looks far more polished and striking.

Im kinda hoping for a patch to improve even a little the iq and animation if possible, its been a mixed bag but i understand RE4 was made for current generation systems first

It just fucking sucks that this game was still basically developed for the PS4 level of hardware.

I wish they had waited three or even five more years so that we could have gotten a 2+ generation leap like it was for the RE2 and RE3 remakes.
No one was in a huge hurry for this remake except for Capcom who needs the cash.

So how hardcore is hardcore mode?

I played the original but that description sounds like clickbait.

Most Resident Evils come with a Hard mode before Professional is unlocked. In this case, I would say RE4R has the most challenging Hard mode of the series. It's not frustrating, and you don't need to be super stingy with ammo, but you can easily get overwhelmed and killed if you're not careful. The difficulty encourages you to search for treasure so you can go for those upgrades. I'm having a blast with it. Enemies don't seem bullet spongey either. They're tanky, but not enough where it crosses the line. You can tell it takes 3-4 extra shots to down them compared to Normal, but since it's Hardcore difficulty, you know what you've signed up for.

I decided to go with standard. I played the original, remember some things but not all of them. And I can see myself replaying the game so, I'll start with normal difficulty.

Game looks really good on PS5 in resolution mode.

Quick question.

Total RE noob. Played the original back on the PS1 years ago. Haven’t touched it since.

Am enjoying the game, but the aiming feels awful. Am I best off adding ‘snap and follow’ aim assistance? I just want to enjoy the game; I slog through plenty of other games on hardest settings.

Is it really designed to be played as a precise third person action game?

I might be misremembering, I mean I've played through the original RE4 like a dozen or so times a while ago, but I feel like this remake is a little harder than the original? I'm at the Mendez boss fight and I feel like from the moment we were trapped in that house with Luis the game has been relentless with sending hordes of enemies at me. I'm constantly at low HP with barely any herbs and this is standard difficulty lol

So how's the PC version? I'm not finding many reviews for the PC version.

Looks and runs great. No stutters or anything.

It’s taking me a while to get Ashley, there’s too much stuff to explore, which is great for the first play trough but terrible for replayabilty.

The reason I have replayed RE4 2 or 3 times a year is because of its perfect pacing, I think having too much shit to explore and go back to is hurting the pace.

I'd just stick with the defaults. It takes some getting used to but I'm pulling off headshots more often than not now.

The game is amazing. I am feeling the same as in 2005 again. It’s so tense.
There are still good jokes too!

I wonder if it will be as replayable. origial had perfect pacing and no distractions.
Here, the merchant side quests make you run around already finished areas if you want to earn upgrades. Doing this crap over and over again in replays will not be fun. Medallions in 1 spot was good. But medallions all over , rats and other stuff will get tedious with next playthrough unless I won’t be doing it. But some of best upgrades are locked behind these tasks.

I can see exploration being more necessary during fresh playthroughs on Hardcore or especially Professional. But on NG+? Nah. You may not even need to do it on Hardcore since by that point you'll probably be good enough at the game to get by.

Excellent. Looks amazing maxed out with high RT settings. Not experience any stutters apart from the occasional stutter when the game is loading a new area. This was noticed by Alex in the digital foundry video. Playing with kbm feels good too. Highly recommend it.

IGN review I think it was mentioned some new stuff but also some things were cut. Are the Regenerators still in? Haven't seen any footage involving them.
I haven't played so far but i seriously doubt they would cut off the regenerators, i bet all enemies are still in ,maybe they even add some
i don't remember the fat guy with a cow's head he was so creepy

Graphics are 10/10 on PC, but my initial impression is that while this is going to be awesome it is no way going to dethrone the original as the gameplay mechanics are simply not as good. It doesn't feel as satisfying to shoot zombies and Leon's movement feels kind of wonky and unpredictable.

Excited to keep going though, don't get me wrong, the game is really strong. It's just clear Shinji Mikami didn't work on it. Also so many damn bear traps....I don't think Leon's leg is going to make it through this game lol

I don't know if this has been discussed anywhere, so I'll ask here. I am playing on the Series X with headphones and the 3D audio sounds "off." Is anyone else experiencing this? It's sounds hollow and almost simulated like you are playing a game that doesn't have native 3D audio.

It appears that they are handling the 3D audio settings different in this game compared to previous entries such as Village. You now must enable 3D audio on a system level and the game will automatically change the 3D audio setting on or off based on your console audio settings.

I have tried both Dolby Atmos and Windows Sonic, and to my ears, uncompressed stereo sounds better. It's crisper, clearer, has more bass, and the directional audio sounds on point. I don't get that hollow simulated sound.

I don't remember this being the case in Village. Maybe it's just a lower volume thing when 3D audio is enabled but to me it just doesn't sound right.

Did anyone experience a strange graphic glitch after a while playing this game on pc? Artifacts start appearing on the screen in the form of crazy colours or just strange pixel colors

It happened to me also on Series X.
Well that's even more weird, I play on pc and I blame my gpu overclock, it happens only with this game, I can run bench for hours but with this game happens right after 45minutes playing like a swiss clock, but it's laughable I don't even run the gpu at 100%

Yeah it's weird. For me it was green and pink flickering pixels. It didn't happen in the Demo at all, or ever happen in any other game for that matter. It happened to me literally at the beginning of the game in the first house where you first are able to use your pistol. Mind you I kept exiting to the game and messing with my audio settings multiple times, then the issue popped up. I exited to the Dashboard and then went back to the game and it was fine after that.

Someone also said in the demo thread it happened to them on Playstation as well.
