Your post just made me pre-order two Vitas.

Best news since the announcement.

Wow, fantastic. Would love another confirmation though... everything sounds a bit too good to be true.

I forgot all about the Activity Log.

Back in January, I had the impression that it would be a feature implemented by developers on a per game basis, when in fact it's a universal feature accessed simply by pulling up on any given LiveArea. Pretty nifty, as long as it remains exclusive to the user's friend list. It auto updates accomplishments (potential spam), and allows players to leave comments, which can be thumbed-up, but I'm not sure if it allows others to reply. If it does, then we won't be needing Vita game OTs anymore. :p

Such a well thought out and fully functioning OS. Yeah, I have some reservations about the aesthetics of the UI, but the functionality is undeniably awesome. Some of the online/social aspects of the OS even go beyond what Xbox Live currently offers, and obviously what PS3 offers as well. Imagine, a handheld with a, possibly, better online implementation than current consoles.

About the memory card : they just obviously chose a format you can't easily tamper with.

My thoughts are that you wont be able to write on it if not though the Vita+usb/wifi/BT/etc, because the Vita will encrypt the data written to the memory card with a private key.

Even if you're right, the same could be accomplished with MicroSD. PS3 does it on a standard 2.5" sata drive.

More like they just obviously chose a format so they could violate your wallet. It has nothing to do with anti-piracy or protecting from mods.

Who knows. If it's fast as lightning, then I'll complain less about the price.

i think its a two pronged approach....they want to profit from a proprietary storage format and they want to minimize custom firmware/piracy exposure as much as possible.
i think sony saw that their open ended design with PS3 storage (HDD) did not net them more sales, so they want to emulate xbox360's proprietary storage solution...

Well, to be fair, the PS3 already works exactly like this. You can create accounts for any region on your PS3 and use any of them without a problem. I don't see why they would regress on that.

I believe the multiple accounts were mostly meant for family members and other people living with you as households aren't really expected to buy several consoles. Handhelds however are often viewed to be personal like smart phones. I would've understood if they went that route even after having more memory. And if the multiple accounts thing turns out to be true, I somehow doubt they would advertize the feature of all siblings being able to play with one Vita.

I understand the security, and somewhere I'm disappointed we probably won't be seeing any CFW for this device.. I was really looking forward seeing this hardware unlocked so the homebrew community could conjure a full-speed Amiga or Saturn emulator.

Still, I'm so ready.

I'm on the same boat here, but I'm glad with what the vita seems to be doing right. (I'll keep my homebrew enabled PSPGo to play ps1 games on the go that I don't want to buy for the xth time)
never say never though, but no custom fw also means more and better games on the long run(?) and I'm all for that too :)

I like the notification light. I also like my Vita without a bunch of LEDs all over the place. 3DS is a mess :(
Yeah, the 3DS looks like something out of a cheesy sci-fi movie with all these lights in different colors.

The blue flashing PS logo is classy as hell.

has this been mentionned before ?
In addition, because PS Vita has a much larger, nicer-looking screen, and the existence of dual analog sticks, we will provide from a system level that some games benefit using the right analog stick. Like FPS or third-person action-adventure games. We will provide options to remap the control from either face buttons or the action buttons to right analog stick. So the control would be much better on PS Vita.

This sounds great to me. Is there any word regarding what the Activity Log tracks? I'm hoping it at least keeps track of playtime for each game, kind of like the 3DS. I'm in love with the feature.

But what does Sony gain from limiting it to one user profile per system?

People would have to have multiple devices for multiple save games, so +1 vita sale for sony.
No more game sharing, so +1 sale of a game.

Is that light notification confirmed? I noticed it during the start up process at the conference but I haven't read/heard anyone mention it's being used for live notifications.

I find the OS absolutely beautiful. Cannot wait to mess with this thing.

the nico nico thing sounds cooler now.

http://andriasang.com/comya6/

PlayStation Vita's Nico Nico Douga functionality will include more than just support for streaming videos covered in the service's characteristic walls of comments. Nikkei reports that Nico Nico operator Niwango is working on developer tools that will allow developers to build live broadcast functionality into their games.

It's nice to see Sony giving so much attention to online community features into the Vita OS. You've got a party system, friend messaging for each games, etc ... right built into the system. It gives me high hopes for PS4.

I believe in game recording won't be a launch feature for the application.

Sony best be busting Google for some Youtube partnership.
are the youtube streaming just for certain people? i wish we had that feature as well lol.

I think you're allowed to do live events on Youtube if you're a partner, but I'm not 100% sure on that. I'd just like an "Upload replay to Youtube" ability in the OS.

kinda hope it'd be easier than ps3 where it doesn't have to stop everything just to upload. but i guess with the ram you won't be able to do it on vita either.

That's a great feature. I'd never broadcast my own game sessions but it would be cool to watch a friend's and laugh at him/her over voicechat if that's possible.
Edit: also the vita continues to impress me with how awesome and well thought out its features are.

Exactly :-/

Not to stop the excitement, but im sure we are all aware that PR people in these trade shows often give incorrect info.

I really hope multiple accounts are in, but Sony is starting to back-track from their 'open' mentality;

- no more switching Hard drives on PS3
- modifying how game sharing works
- no removable battery
- ...etc

Regardless, portable of the forever :)

I don't understand why they chose to go with a separate "Group Messaging" app instead of integrating all communications into one app. Right now there's Party, which supports voice and text; group messaging, presumably a text chat that supports up to 16 participants; and the Friends app, which I assume supports direct messages to your friends.

I hope to find out enough about their functionality and interfaces to feel that the separation is justified.

Wasn't sure about my preorder for two 3G models, but OP's post has re-confirmed my choice. Glad I paid the extra $50 for each. I'm definitely getting the 3G plan as long as they are reasonably priced. Thanks!

OS looks absolutely horrendous. Has that patented Sony lack of style. Still room for improvement I guess.
Hey, hey. You can say a lot of things about their previous OSes, but there was a cohesive and an almost palpable sense of style in everything they developed in the past 10 years, up until this point.

Multiple accounts on one system, activity logs, live streaming (which i'd hope they'd make a US deal with some site in order to have feature parity)? this OS just keeps getting better, just need skins now that get rid of those bubbles.

Hey guys, I bare bad news.

If you remember back to last week I said that I was told by a Sony employee at TGS that the VITA would support multiple accounts. When I've just been informed that this isn't the case. It's exactly the same as then PSP account system.

This news makes me sad as I really wanted to both my US & Japanese accounts on my Vita When it's released on December 17th. But it does mean I'll no longer get my trophies messed up because I was logged into the wrong account., so it looks like I'll be playing mainly on my Japanese account.

I only need 1 account for my main and the rest can be separate anyways. I'm not the type that invest heavily in other accounts besides my main anyways.

preorders canceled.

lets all tweet to Yoshida and see what he can do and let's not take an answer like "well think about it" or "We are always listening to fans".

Sucks, although with 3G it shouldn't be nearly as big a roadblock as on PSP, right? With PSP, I have to decide before I leave home whether I'll be playing downloaded Japanese or American games; with Vita, I should be able to swap my account login on the fly.

(BTW, thanks to the OP for this thread, so much info in such a concise form!)

after thinking about it for a while, I think the downside is that you can't play imported psn games for your main account trophies etc? ps3 is great, I can buy games from whatever store and play the game on my main account, which give me trophies for my main account.

I take it this is no longer the case with vita?
