Media Create Sales: Week 46, 2011 (Nov 14 - Nov 20)

I still don't understand such a bomba - they really misread te market with this release.

Isn't Ni no Kuni Hino's pet project where he admitted throwing caution into the wind (as in optimizing game for the largest audience, L5's one big strength when they started self-publishing)? The DS version had the advantage of still having said audience even though the book made it a harder sell, the PS3 version was an odd choice audience wise from the very start.

Dengeki says Ninokuni only sold about 40% of the shipment, which means Level-5 shipped around 130k. ROFLMAO. MEGA BOMBA. LEVEL-5 SUCKS. HINO'S LUCK. RAN OUT FUCK. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Party at my place. 7pm. Everyone's invited.
Was just browsing casually and reading this made me literally laugh out loud.

Good to see western games charting that high, PSP sales are dipping because of Vita next week.

budget release to cash-in on the movie which opens on the 3rd - bit surprised that Sega never made a follow-up game, think the 1st one sold ok for what is a relatively low budget rhythm game?

These are the reprints of the Best Versions for the 3 PS3 Yakuzas, you can see it from the low price. I forgot to write it.

you are right. Valkiriya Chronicles sold 1 million copies in the end.
lolchartz!

EDIT:

Define successful.
500K or more ? 1 million or more ?
Only Inazuma Eleven did really big numbers.

Not that last generation was any different, only Kingdom Hearts had big sales.
If 500k is the benchmark then this gen we've had:

Inazuma Eleven (DS) Level-5
Ninokuni (DS) Level-5
God Eater (PSP) Namco

And last gen it was:

Kingdom Hearts (PS2) Square
Monster Hunter (PS2) Capcom
Beetle MushiKing (GBA) Sega
Yakuza (PS2) Sega

They don't sell well anywhere and they still give the games pretty high budgets. He's their mascot after all.
Sonic sells extremely well on DS/Wii in western markets. Which makes the total abscence of Generations on those platforms a typical Sega move.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
I think Ninokuni: Wrath of the White Witch did bad on PS3 for various reasons, some more important than others.

1) Bad Level 5 reputation on PS3: the two WKC certainly didn't give to the userbase a very good picture of the skills of the team in making RPGs. But I think this could have been a factor only for that part of the userbase who bought WKC and WKC2 and would have bought Ninokuni, and I think that's not a lot of the RPG fans of PS3. So, there must have been something more that affected

2) Content of the game: the game is basically a remake / reimagining of a game came out just...less than one year ago. And this time we're talking about a game that, in the end, hasn't flopped on the console on which it came out.

I mean, it's true that it had difficulties in selling the shipment and that there have been price cuts... but with a 180k first week, it still did a lot: 550k. Even if a game receives a massive cut, it's absolutely not assured that it will sell. Ninokuni sold due to its attractive, and it's the second best brand new RPG in this gen. So, this time we weren't in the case of what happened when the two Tales of on 360 and Wii have been ported on PS3: Ninokuni already obtained to sell a lot on DS, where there was the audience for it. And this bring in another factor

3) PS3's RPG userbase. PS3 has a very good userbase for RPGs, and this is demonstrated by sales of lots of games, with Tales of Xillia being the most shining example. But all these RPGs have in common the target: certainly, not the children, but "gamers", otaku... not lower-age audience, this because of the price and the kind of support PS3 received.

(Moreover, I think lots of these games have been helped by the lack of SE at full force, and the decline of FF franchise: much more breath, more space for other series to grow.)

But it could have done certainly better, even if PS3 is not the platform where there is the majority of the younger audience, without...

4) Insane price: 8800 YEN for a game dedicated NOT to otakus or "core gamers", but to younger audiences. It's what stopped the DS version from selling greatly from the beginning, and this time it was even worse, because on PS3.

...But I still think Ninokuni PS3 could sell the first shipment, at least: Level 5 games have had legs during these years, even without bargain bins.

P.S. How can be considered a flop Ninokuni DS?!?... Neither Inazuma Eleven Strikers is doing bad.
Considering it's a spin-off with arcade mechanics, over 200k since launch can't be considered a bad result. And this end of the year, we'll have the expansion, which will bring sales as a whole to 300k, a good result.
...Especially considering we're talking about Wii in 2011.

I think this is probably the key factor, and it makes it really hard to compare it with anything. Obviously a lot of effort has gone in to the game and from a development perspecitve it's a completely different game with a much higher budget than the DS game, but from a (non-graphic whore) players perspective, is it worth playing both games unless you really really loved the original version? (Honest question, I haven't played either so I have no idea).

As a completely ridiculous and useless exercise I tried comparing it to some remakes. The game did about 38% of the DS game's first week sales and 12% of its LTD.

(remake first week sales VS original LTD)
DQIV DS 19%
DQV DS 24%
DQVI DS 28%
FFIV DS 22%
Pokemon HG/SS 23%
OoT 3D 16%
Saga 2 DS 12 %

I don't know if it's at all an apt comparison and of course those games all had over a decade between them. At least it did better than some lazy HD ports
MHP3rdHD 6%
Peace Walker HD 5%

They make bad games. I bought them.

i thought dragon quest viii was pretty damn awesome. dark cloud sucked noodles though, and i thought layton (the first one) was too boring to warrant checking out the sequels.

looking forward to time travelers though, solely because there might be time traveling because the name of the game is called time travelers.

They had nothing to do with DQ VIII beyond the engine/programming though, which is why it was awesome. DC2 looks great but is a snooooooorefest for example.

How much do you expect it to sell? It's a visual novel adventure game like 428.

It is? From what I've seen it looked more like a graphic adventure than a novel game. Not that this would raise sales expectations much but still, more animation, more mass appeal.

The only thing great about DQ8 were the graphics. Everything else was completely inferior to DQ7. :p

Do you enjoy charmless repetitive vignettes with the same black screen indicating a celebratory feast, with aesthetics inferior to its Super Famicom precedessor? Then DQ7 is the game for you. If you enjoy orchestrated Sugiyama and characters you can form attachments to, then DQ8 is the better choice.

It is hard to be superior to the best game in the series.

Hmm...so what to predict? small flies too (Kamen Rider, Itadaki, Assasins) or just big ones (Mario Kart and Gundam VS)? Maybe throw a 3DS HW to spice it up if the latter?

3DS will keep rising week after week from now on. It's not important to guess its sales every week, since it's included in December prediction.

The 4 titles (5 or 6 with Kamen Rider) are enough.
