What's this P90X workout stuff?

Today I tried to eat a Nutella sandwich for the first time in a month. It tasted... very average. p90x has turned me into a monster D:

Currently 33C over here, but the humidity is through the roof. I don't think I'll be able to survive a Yoga session :\ so I might swap it for X Stretch today and do Yoga on Sunday.

how is it coming along? The noise is the one of the biggest reasons why I have skipped p90x for now...I will be kicked out of the apartment so fast if I do it

Also, question to everyone, dinner, before or after workout?

No jumping jacks, those are the only ones I can't control the noise level. Everything else should be mildly ok. I dont think skipping a few jumps stuff will hurt you in the long run. Same goes for Pylo

I always drink a banana milk shake after a workout, but I fear i'm not getting enough calories and protein in my diet, need to work on that. Just finished up Legs & Back, though I should have been doing Yoga.

I was a day behind so I just skipped yoga, plan on doing Yoga instead of X Stretch, like someone else mentioned earlier. Thanks for that diet chart btw!

Anyone find Ab ripper X to toughest exercise to do? In terms of that I just find it so borring and can never be bothered to do it! I hate working on the abs... even though I want them badly haha

It is pretty tough, I especially have trouble on the exercises where you're on your side, but that last one with knuckles alternating from hip to hip is awesome, I pull through 50 every time, it's so gratifying.

A few days ago I did back and biceps with 7.5kg dumbells (16.5 lb). It was bloody hard, but it felt so good being in that 8-10 range and really struggling for the last few reps. Even though it's been three days since the workout, my biceps are still sore. Feels good.

Though today was the first day my knees almost made me quit the session. I've had a history of knee pain, but it's been fine up until today. I think it may be due to the fact that apart from p90x and a couple of footy sessions, I've been sitting at a desk for a fortnight, studying for my exams. Hopefully it's all back to normal after Monday.

I've been doing it on a carpet barefoot. It's doable.

It's actually me "favorite" workout.

- It's short
- It doesn't make any noise (good for apartment people)
- It doesn't require much attention (I watch tv while doing the exercises)
- I'm pretty good at it (for me it's just working on better poses; straight legs etc.)

The downside is that after a while you start to wonder if Ab Ripper X has any effect at all, because you seem to breeze through it.

Did day 1 earlier today. Good workout, feel nice and toasty now. I don't have nearly the range of motion required to even get into position for a couple of things in ab ripper x like the pfeiffer scissors, and that's after years of stretching in BJJ, but I have lower body flexibility issues, so I'll deal.

Something that I found helps a ton with the Pfeiffer Scissors is really focusing on flexing your toes. For some reason having really flexed toes helps keep my leg in the air stay as straight as it can.

I still can't hit a 90º angle with my legs or do all of them, but flexed toes has at least helped me bang out more reps of it.

love Pfeiffer Scissors and the 2 where you pick your back off the floor... one of them is called "heels to the heavens"

Hips to the Sky and Heals to the Heavens I think.

I can't actually get past 45 degrees, even. I'll sub 'em out with something else.

I'm the same way, I have pretty much 0 flexibility in my lower body. Hell, most of the leg in air ab exercises look awful when I do them. I still do my best though and I can see an improvement.

I've only been doing things off and on for a few weeks, school work has gotten the best of me. After this week I'm going to start the routine over and hopefully stick with it.

Yep, count me in the can't do Pfeiffer Scissors with correct form club as well. I'm now 11 weeks in and I still can't do it with any semblance of satisfaction. Hip rock and raise, no problem. VF roll-ups? Sure. Scissors? F that.

On another note, did my 60 day measurements and in the last 30 days, lost 2.5 inches from the waist, while increasing chest and biceps. That gut is the last to go, but I was damn happy to have measurable progress there, besides photos.

A lot of people struggle with pfieffer scissors because it mainly involves the hamstring and the hips, two muscle groups which are generally tight for most people. I was in a similar situation until I did Yoga X. I have had a history of lower back pain and tight muscles all over the left side of my body but Yoga has definitely helped in improving my range of motion on that side. After the second or third Yoga session, I was able to do any exercise that was first a struggle because of tight muscles. Yoga will be a godsend to you if you plan on continuing BJJ.

Heck, I think Yoga will be the only regular exercise I'll keep doing on a weekly basis once I start post-Christmas football training. I see it as the most important workout.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to the yoga. My BJJ school actually started up weekly functional yoga classes as a supplement right before I moved away, definitely beneficial.

I lost 20 pounds on this and then gained 25 pounds.

I should probably restart, but I want to know if P90X-2 is going to be a better program or not. I think it's out in a few days right?

From everything I've seen, P90X2 is really meant for people who are looking for an additional edge over P90X. I don't think I'm going to touch it until I'm closer to the guys in the videos. Not 100% as good, but I think being 75% of the way there should be a good enough base.

Only 50% as good right now in terms of weight/reps on most things currently, and I still feel like a beast. Getting closer to looking like one, too.

I'm also interested in p90X-2, though I think this time next year I'll be doing that cardio program (Insanity?) while hitting the gym instead.

I'll only jump on the p90X-2 bandwagon if people are feeling their body is getting as much improvement as it did with the original.

The main thing that has me reluctant to try P90X-2 is that it seems to require a lot more exercise equipment than its predecessor.

Yeah, I had the same issues with the new Insanity workouts. The thing that made P90X so appealing to me is that you really only needed a way to do pull ups and the relevant weights for your strength. While that isn't a "tiny" amount of space, it's doable. When they add the new things they've added...I just don't want to store all of that in my apartment.

My body sure needs the recovery week starting tomorrow. Replacing Plyo and Kenpo with two sessions of footy training wasn't the brightest move, since the dramatic increase in workload is really leading to soreness in the back and left leg. Going to see physio tomorrow.

Looking at my body, it looks like there wasn't much weight loss during phase 2 (even though the scale disagrees) but I can clearly see a lot more definition in the upper body. My arms, even when I was fairly skinny, have always been flabby but now there's some shape forming :)

Me and my brother have been doing Power 90 for the past 15 days. I really enjoy it.

Quick question, my brother is ill today, what should he do when he gets back into it? Carry on where I am or carry on the ones he has missed?

Can this workout be done without a chinup bar?

I can get the bar no problem but there is really nowhere to install it in my house. My wife wants to pick this up for me

You can use resistance bands instead of pull-up bars for the back exercises. They show you how to use them in the videos, and honestly if you can't do a ton of pullups currently, the bands will be a more controlled environment for you than doing chair pull-ups would be anyways.

They sell bands all over the place, just make sure to get a variety pack so you can mess around with different weights, and make sure you get a door strap to secure them to the top of a door in your house. They typically look like a thick piece of foam in a nylon rope with a loop in it. This lets you open the door, place the foam piece on the other side of the door and close the door with the loop side facing where you want to work out. Put your bands through the loop and you've got an overhead rig to do the back exercises with.

I recommend the Bodylastics Max Tension system. $40 on Amazon. You can double and triple those bands to get even more tension if need be. When I peter out on the pull-up bar and can't do anymore with any reasonable amount of form, I move to the bands right away. That seems to work fine for me.

P90X2 starts shipping tomorrow and I'm so hyped for it right now. Currently, I'm still working on Week 9 of my hybrid P90X/Insanity workout. Since a lot of people are getting this for Christmas, it's probably time for a new thread. Also, would anyone be interested in joining a NeoGAF workout group on Beachbody's site? I was thinking we could get people from here to join and start a P90X2 cycle on 1/1 and go from there.

Wow, I didn't even know that P90x-2 was coming out soon.

Currently on day 60 of Power 90 and I have been lowing it so far. My aim was always to improve general fitness and gain some muscle definition since I don't really have weight to lose.

Loving the results so far, upper body is becoming really defined, abs are back and even my legs are improving. Gained a few kg of muscle weight already and am really happy.

Once I finish P90 I may either repeat it or go on to P90M before I try P90X.

Since the original P90 is a bit older now most seem to have forgotten it. I do however find it to be a very well balanced program for those that are just starting out and it's easier to actually stick to it than to try and do P90X immediately and then quit after a bit.

What did you guys do as beginners when you were sore as hell after a workout? What happens if you're still sore a week later? Do you plow through the exercise regardless of pain or is that dangerous?

Damn that was quick. Well not really, but I haven't worked out in about a month so I'll need to ramp up again to get ready. If everyone else is starting 1/1 that should give me enough time to whip back into decent shape.

I'll probably do a "false start" sample week like I did with P90X before 1/1. Just enough to give me a feel for the P90X2 videos before I start proper.

Personally I just plowed through it, but for me it was more of a dull (sometimes not so dull) ache and limited range of movement pretty much all day after workouts for the first 2-3 weeks. It's a fine line though, so you've got to listen to your body and be careful.

The first week was hell. I just had my protein shake after each workout and then went about my day normally. But my legs and arms were especially sore and I had some trouble walking down stairs at University for the first week.

I did continue my workout though. The second and third day were the worst but I forced myself to continue and actually as I warmed up, it was not so difficult.
I think it's just important to not over-exert yourself when you are that sore. Only do as many repetitions as you are comfortable doing. In the first week your body should get used to the workout routine, no need to torture yourself.

By the second week all soreness was gone and I was enjoying it a lot. After the first month I increased my weights and now I feel I am doing well and am really enjoying it.

Every now and then there may be a day where I really don't feel like doing cardio. As I don't really have weight to lose I just modify my routine on these days. I do the warm-ups and the yoga, skip all the low-impact and jumping cardio and then go on to kicking and punching and end with the ab routine. Only done this two time so far but it was a nice compromise between not doing a full cardio workout but also not taking a complete break.

Plowed through that first week and very glad I did. After that first week of hell, things are much easier on your body going forward. Just drink a recovery drink! Something with a 3:1 carb to protein ratio to refill the glycogen in your muscles. A tall glass of lowfat chocolate milk does the trick.

I just continued. There really isn't anyway to avoid the soreness, it's normal.

As everyone has already said, you just keep going. If you can survive week 1, you can make it through the entire program. I start (the final) week 13 on Monday and when I think back about where I was when I started, and where I am now, I'm so glad I never gave up. I was sore for the first 10 days in spots I didn't even know I could have soreness. But after that, it dissipates. You still feel soreness after a workout, but never to the extent of week 1 and it feels like progress instead of pain after awhile. And just for a little more context, I turned 40 years old this year. At the beginning of the year I honestly thought, "Well, I don't look bad for a 40 year old...". Then a friend of mine who is older than I am, took up p90x and had dramatic results. That prompted me to forego the whole "I don't look bad" thought process to "I want to look good". Best decision I made this year. If this old guy can do it, you young guys can. I just wish I had done it sooner.

Meh, it's not just beginners. I've been doing the lean version for 1.5 years (complete one, take a week off, start again) and still some days I get sore, especially the chest and legs exercises. For me it's normal, a lot has to do with how much water I've drank and stretching afterwards.

Working out if I'm sore actually makes it better, seems that it gets the lactic acid out of the muscles. I just don't overdo it. Any kind of activity helps, just get the blood flowing.

I think I'm going to buy a set of Powerblocks from Dick's this week. The 50-pound set is $300 there, which is about $30 cheaper than Amazon.

I've been using dumbbells with plates and it's a pain in the ass to constantly switch them. I considered Powerblocks and the Bowflex adjustable dumbbells, but I've read that the Bowflex set has serious durability issues. Plus, the Powerblocks are about $100 cheaper.

Anyone here use Powerblocks with P90X? I've read great things about them.
