Vita Will Allow Multiple PSN Accounts, Sony Says

Compared to the previous situation, this is a minor improvement, but it's still a shit sandwich.
One I'll inevitably eat, grinning.

I guess I'll get a 32gb for my EU account, and then buy an 8gb for my US account, then a 4gb for my JP account. This is going to be so fucking expensive...

Fantastic....

"Want to use PSN with the Vita? Buy a memory card. Want to use more than one PSN account with the Vita? Buy several memory cards. Want to play a lot of big games like Uncharted? Yes you need a memory card"

Vita was going to be a day 1 purchase but now I think I'm content with sitting back and seeing how this plays out... for a while. (I've been burned with buying a 3DS day 1... not going to happen again >_> )

I'm still confused (my comprehension skills aren't working today).

Can I still play games and use DLC (and earn trophies) from account 2 on account 1 if I'm logged in on account 1 with account 2's memory card?

I really hope so.

Edit: I'm looking specifically at this:

Customers will be able to swap cards to use different PSN IDs on the same system, MacKenzie said. If you have more than one memory card, you can register a different PlayStation Network account on each.

“You can also use them both on the same PSN account as well,” she said.

Better than the alternative, but still pretty shitty. Oh well, most of my purchases will be on my Japanese account, so hopefully by the time I need to get anything off one of my others the prices will have gone down and I'll just grab a low capacity one.

No confirmation yet, but everything points to NO.

Oh you sly Sony.

Guess we have to update the "Why you shouldn't buy a Vita thread" to:

"BITCH YOU GONNA NEED A MEMORY CARD"

I really think that the multiple accounts problem is due to the lack of internal storage of the Vita. But it still should allow multiple accounts on a single card, because the current solution would not let me play my japanese bought games on my US account.

Absurd, stupid and (potentially) harmful pricing of the memory cards aside, this is actually more functional than the existing PSP method of having to activate the regional account which bought whatever content you want to use.

Hopefully changing memory cards isn't a hassle.

Probably tied to the DRM, whether the DRM restricts you to the system or user or card.

well, I am really lazy.. if it will log me in to a particular account based on the memory card I insert into the device, I might think about it..

Ill wait it out through the JP launch and see how things go but Im leaning towards cancelling my preorder now in hope that the system or the cards will end up much cheaper in a year or so.

Theyre really draining the excitement out of me.

I actually think this method is kinda cool. Bring you mc to your friends vita, pop it in and voila. Its like ur in ur own vita. If it actually is that seamless

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
I can only assume anyone considering this a 'no buy' issue will never own the 3DS.

Looks like Crystal has some more work to do. Resetting Vita to factory settings should not affect the memory card.

It says the card is tied to your Vita, probably through your PSN account. So by restoring factory defaults you'll clear PSN accounts and as a result, tied in memory cards.

me thinks that memory card prices subsidize the price of the VITA. More hooks to memory card dependance ..
It's not so different than what Apple does, the only difference is that you can't see what the "base" price of an iPad with no storage is which obscures how overpriced the memory is...and it works well for them because I don't see that much bitching about that.

Now what I really want to know is what happens if I have two memory cards with the same account...is it like Xbox Live where only one copy of your profile is valid? Can I hand a card with half of my purchases on it and lend it to a friend and tell him to turn off his internet connection while he plays one of my games? If there if a unique encryption per card, does it involve a per console key, can I swap my card into my friend's Vita and start playing?

Edit: Way to read the OP, go me...looks like two memory cards with the same account is ok...also, forgot about the activation system, so in the case where you lend the card to your friend I bet he would have to sign in once in order to activate the card with his Vita, burning one of your activations...

Hold on, guys. What's this I see?

“Your PSN ID is bonded to your memory card and your memory card is bonded to your Vita,” MacKenzie said. “So if you wanted to change different PSN users but use the same memory card, you would need to go factory reset.”

“Your PSN ID is bonded to your memory card and your memory card is bonded to your Vita,”

your memory card is bonded to your Vita

...wait, what? Is this the true white elephant in the room?

Yes, my guess is there is no way to keep account info externally, so when you switch account, you have to enter everything from scratch. They probably shouldn't keep your password on the memory card. It may be kept in the system itself (somewhere!). We shall see...

EDIT: Correction, I meant the password derived token would be on the card, but something in the system decrypts it.

Seems okay for now. I'll just have to get a card for my JP account when I end up needing to do something digital which hasn't been too often so far.

Wait, so it means that factory reset also format memory card?

It does *appear* to imply that. Which would be bizarre.

It also appears to imply that you *have* to do a factory reset to reinitialise a memory card.

It also appears to imply that you need a memory card to even *play* online.

It also appears to imply that you need to have saves or software *on* the same memory card your account is on; if need to save and realise that your card is full midgame, you can't just swap to your other card registered to a different region to get content saved out.

It also appears to imply that you can't just loan a memory card to a friend. Understandable for games... but for *saves*?

It also raises questions about the upgrade process - both how you go about upgrading your Vita (I assume it's possible to change a memory card to be assigned to a different Vita - but I don't like the talk about factory resets) and how you go about upgrading a memory card (Where do you put the data while transferring it, since you only have one card reader? Cloud storage?)

I suspect some (most?) of these are jumping to conclusions, but still: So many questions!

I think it means in the activation sense.

I would guess you activate a card to work on a vita like you do software on a PS3 or PSP. And you can tie a card to a couple of Vitas, deactivate them if they die, etc.

Probably so that in the case that people learn how to copy memory cards, you won't have instant and rampant piracy...

I think he means the actual download of the full game. I think it's like 4gb.
I'm buying my games retail so I don't worry about it.

Yeah, this seems nice if so.
Pop in the card and you have your profile, saves, games, friends list.

I highly doubt Non PSN content(movies and music you put on there outside the PSN ecosystem) will be tied to one system. Of course everything else will.

This basicly confirms that the memcards will have some military grade protection on them. I exect that they will have custom hardware for security.

You can reset to factory settings if you want to use your saves with a new Vita? Seems like we will be copying stuff to pc/ps3 before going that way.

Not really a good way to allow multiple accounts, but one I can begrudgingly swallow down if a card switch can let me use my 2 accounts. It just means I'll need 2 memory cards. Still wish they did it in a completely different way, a user friendly way.

sounds like they will be encrypting the entire memory card to the bounded system + psn account... I guess I can buy that but will wait and see how it plays out first.

Yes, the card is tied to the Vita, but the contents on the card may not need to. Even if you reset to factory defaults, you should only clear the system, not the card contents. So our files should remain intact.

The weird thing about this is: There was a guy here on the boards that wanted to test his own account on the Vita while they were shown at the recent US mall tour. I don't remember if he did or if he just asked to use his account but the Sony guy at the show apparently said that it was no problem but that it would take some time, because he would have to reset the system to factory setting in order to use a different account. Now, I doubt the Sony guy would ever let anyone reset the device if it would delete all the demos off of it.

The Vita is just a ploy to sell memory cards.

Sadly, at this point, this is what it seems. Absolutely everything about Vita looks devised to make you purchase a collection of memory cards, which by itself wouldn't be a terrible problem... if they weren't so damned overpriced for what they are.

It's unfortunate that Sony have to turn to screw their users so ludicrously to get some extra money from the device. This fuck-up with the memory cards it's the only thing that keeps me away from getting a Vita launch-day... well, that and the lack of more time for another console in my current life.

There were no memory cards in the units at the mall.
The game demos were on actual Vita carts with handwritten stickers on them.
I pulled one out. :)

But yeah, I don't think formatting erases the card contents. Just deactivates the rights so you can't access it.
Once you reactivate with the original account, I would imagine it's all available again.

All speculation until later this month though.
