I wish more people were into this so there would be more discussion.

I ordered my copy of Fishing Resort from Amazon but I won't have it until Wed, Nov 30. In the meantime I think I'm going to walk down to our (very) local Walmart and buy a remote+ (I'm going to get a black one with the hope that Nintendo will come to its senses and make the Wii U available in black...PLEASE).

That's all right. Much appreciation for the pick-up! Chances are, though, without a pre-order your store may not have any at all... ;_; I'd call first just to make sure you're not making the trip for nothing.

I'm actually picking up some other games that are going to be on sale and I figured I would pick this up while I'm there. Unfortunately, I just checked and my store didn't get it in. Oh well, it seems like 3 other stores in my area got it. I went to reserve it last week, but I believe because of the delay it was removed from their system. No problem, I'll have it some point! =)

I'm gonna try and look for this tomorrow when I'm out buying painting supplies. I'm in Canada, so I have no idea what my luck will be like.

Your Amazon.com order of "Fishing Resort with Fishin..." has shipped!

Couldn't find this in Canada, so had to import. Thanks random XSEED schill for your reserved yet appealing enthusiasm which has garnered you another sale of the bundle. Looking forward to some relaxing hours ahead. :)

I am not random! I am localization grunt #2 (out of 3...)! I can be distinguished from Tom by my lack of cheerful enthusiasm or anything resembling cheese. I am... the sarcastic one. I am also a girl, but the box on my head usually keeps that little secret safe.

Anyway, you have my reserved tears of joy for your support of this fishing title of dazzling brilliance. ^_-

This is the same fishing game that Yuji Naka was developing yeah?

Gods I did not think this was going to get localized - and with the peripheral to boot!

Hopefully this one arrives from Amazon quicker than Mario 3D Land.

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
There was no mention of a EU release yet, right? From reading the impressions here, I'd buy it in a heartbeat for 20 bucks. Damn.

It's funny. Zelda was my most anticipated game of the year, and i'm enjoying it to an extent, but it's fishing resort I keep thinking about while away from the house. I've been able to play it for 30 minutes here and there and still feel satisfied. Just learned lure fishing which is a lot more fun than bait fishing. I do wish there was an easier way to access the store/aquarium on different parts of the island, unless i'm missing something?

I have a question that hopefully h.protagonist can answer. Theres a password system in the game that is used to unlock special fish. In the manual it says the passwords will be in various places (website, magazine). I'm wondering if thats still planned? If so, any news on when we can expect it? Sounds pretty neat.

So, has anyone got any impressions?

minimumhippo seems be enjoying it. ^_-

"I love all the options in terms of rods, reels, bait, etc. I'm also a sucker for customization so I'm really enjoying all the clothing available to purchase. Seems like I've barely scratched the surface so far and I hope it has a lot to offer. Went in to this somewhat blind so it's nice to see everything there is to do. I wish more people were into this so there would be more discussion." -minimumhippo

Is it in your hot little hands yet?

Really glad you're liking it. With a title like this it's easy to first see it only as shovelware and I don't want you guys to think I'm "shilling" just because I worked on it. I'm not here for XSEED, I'm just hopelessly addicted to the cat threads in Off Topic Discussion. ;) My 'subtitle' is to let you guys know I work for XSEED because I'm open about that, and I do want to help anyone I can on threads related to our titles. Anyway, it really is a good little game, and I'm glad it got you with its siren call of fishing delights. I spent many a happy hour playing it myself (even though I'm not a leisure game person at all).

So... to your actual questions! Lure fishing definitely ups the ante (like driving a stick shift as opposed to auto, right?). As for quick access, do you know how to warp? If you have the map of the area and have been there at least once (the little flag on the map will turn orange) then you can press the 1 button to bring up the map (I believe) and can then use the analog stick to select whatever flag you want to warp to. It's much faster than renting a bike everyday or walking. For the store/aquarium you have to warp to Shop Waterhouse and Hotel Fishing Resort on the Teman Paradise Beach map. The only thing you can't jump to/from is when traveling from big location to big location. You have to check out of your hotel and then select Teman on the map to get back to the aquarium/main store (you do know there are the mini bait store at each location, though, right?).

As for the password thing, let me check with the guys on Monday about that for you when I get back to the office. ^_^ Did you at least get the new fish that are released automatically? Those ones are really hard to catch!

Thanks for the response. I know about the fast travel within the same location, as well as the mini-shop that sells bait and lures; I just wish there was a way to quickly access the aquarium/large shop without having to check out of the current hotel every time. It's really not a huge deal though.

I think the game has downloaded 1 extra fish since I started playing, although I have no idea where to find it. My girlfriend seems to be more hooked on this game than I am and is getting a little competitive. It would be great to be able to have 2 separate characters on the same save file so that we could both have access and contribute to the same fish log, aquarium upgrades, and island locations, making it more of a cooperative experience. It's fun trying out different locations and experimenting with certain spots and techniques and then telling each other about it, I just wish it was more integrated in to the experience.

I feel odd being addicted to this game just coming off of hours and hours of Dark Souls, but it's just so damn fun. Reminds me of blind-buying Sega Bass Fishing on Dreamcast when it was released and just falling in love with it.

I might have to give this game a try, though I don't know too much about it. I am a sucker for XSEED releases however.

What time is it?
My copy arrived today. I played for about three hours while watching Monday Night Football. I think this will be a great game to play while listening to podcasts.

I'm really enjoying this so far and I've only tried out float fishing which seems perfect for when the game doesn't have your full attention. I can't wait to try out lure fishing.

I do like that the size of the fish will determine how far they will run with your line before you can actually start to reel them back in. My first S-Rank catch was a Bullhead Japanese Shark and he probably ran 60-70 feet before I could bring him in.

I just earned enough coins and am a high enough level now that I can unlock the second area. Hopefully this contains the lure trainer.

A couple of things I appreciate:

-Smart use of motion controls. I don't believe they are used outside of the act of fishing. There are some mini-games that could have easily had some waggle tacked on.
-While the game utilizes a daily timer and a timer for head to head challenges, if your line is in the water the time will not interrupt that attempt.

Hey guys, my girlfriend and I are getting each other cheap gifts this Christmas and I figured I'd ask for this. I don't really feel like having another plastic doohicky lying around.. is this game fairly playable without getting the rod enclosure?

Hey guys, postcard just arrived in the mail from Penangkapan! ;) I think you know what to do with it, minimumhippo.

So, how's the fishing going? Anyone land a giant squid or marlin yet? :D

Yup. Very playable. The rod enclosure is solid and definitely adds a realistic element to the game, but I played the whole thing without it and it works beautifully with just the Wiimote and Nunchuk as well.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
Anybody have any tips for me on catching the shark at big catch rock? I can't even get him to look at my lure :(

Cool, thanks! I'll throw this on my Wishlist then.

I'm guessing you got the shark quest, then, so just go to Big Catch Rock, and equip a large rod with large bait (yellow, red, rainbow, etc). Using the floater (not lure) cast to the left (between the rock you're standing on and the big rock out in the water). Drag the bait back so that it goes in-between the rock you're on and the one to your immediate left. I always see the Bullhead swimming in there, so I think that's your best bet.

Got my copy in the mail today. The manual very clearly states that the game supports "movement enhancements with Wii Motion Plus." So if anyone was on the fence about that, go ahead and order the game. It also supports the original remote (without Motion Plus).

Yay! Thanks for that. The girlfriend and I have caught some neat fish on the trolling tour (marlin, hammerhead), although I've been sticking mainly to the beach and the lake. I'm trying to catch most of the fish in the areas and complete all the quests before moving on. I've yet to even visit 4 of the locations.

Shes been spending a lot of time in the jungle and has plenty of alligator gars to show for it. We had some fun helping each other with the fish quizzes but i'm not really sure what the licenses do? I must have missed that part.

Yeah I noticed that. I've now tried it with both motion+ and with a regular wiimote and could not tell a difference. With either one it sometimes doesn't recognize my casts. I usually have to cast very quickly and close to my body for it to register, yet my girlfriend doesn't have that issue. Bizarre...

I've seen the same thing with other games. I cannot for the life of me do the rhythm mini games in Zack & Wiki but I've watched someone on justin.tv absolutely nail them on his first attempt, remarking how much he loves doing them (whereas I want to throw my remote through the TV after trying for the 50 billionth time). Bizarre indeed.

You should have seen Wyrdwad (our translator) trying to play it. His first attempt at a cast was a kind of stiff-armed, stabbing motion at the TV like he was trying to poke holes in it. He followed that up with a chopping movement that did nothing but make me laugh. :D But in the end he got the hang of it, and if he can do it, anyone (eventually) can.

Even though I got the game on Nov 30 I really didn't get around to playing it until today. On my first full day (in game) I lost a lot of fish but on my second day I was more careful about not letting the tension go very far into the red and I lost no fish at all. It felt like a major accomplishment! :)

I haven't had any problems with casting. I can cast near and far. I'm still using an old remote (not Motion Plus). Seems to work fine.

Very fun game. I'm hooked!

Man, the 1UP review for this game is terrible:

http://www.1up.com/reviews/fishing-resort-wii

The reviewer essentially marks it down for being a fishing game (a genre that he claims is "very hard to screw up" - how many fishing games has he actually played?!) and not doing enough to distract you from the fact that it's a fishing game.
It almost sounds like he was confused about what kind of game it was before he started playing it, despite the word "fishing" in the title.

Still, at least they reviewed it! That's more effort than most websites can bother to give. Such a shame, too, considering this is the most fun I've had with a game this year. It's like Endless Ocean all over again. Theres nothing to kill? NON-GAME!

Yeah. It makes me sad. I get that not many people will be interested (no OT still! ;_;), but it's a good game, dammit! We checked out some other similar sports titles before this to get a feel for them and Fishing Resort is both solid AND charming (AND pretty, IMO). It does what it does well, and it's fun to play. *shakes a fist*

I guess there is something in that, though a C+ somehow turns into a score of 58 on Metacritic. I winced when I saw that. There have been quite a few smaller sites reviewing it too, though, and for the most part they're all BUY IT/THUMBS UP. And you guys seem to be having fun with it. Really, that's all I hope for with games I work on. ^_^

Hey! XSeed marketing guy! How's about picking up Earth Seeker and Sky Knight Rodea for a US release? I couldn't care less about fishing games.

So, my bundle didn't come with instructions on how to assemble the Fishing Rod Controller. I feel like this should be obvious, but I keep thinking I'm going to break something. :p

I happen to be a girl, and I'm not even marketing... (I'm the Senior Editor at XSEED) But, I shall endeavor to answer your questions despite a marked lack of enthusiasm for the fishing game I so lovingly poured hours of my life into. :p

For Earth Seeker, I'm sorry to say, we won't be pursuing it. And as for Rodea, we have no say in that game as the IP holder, Kadokawa, hasn't even disclosed their Japanese release plans yet. So really, your only hope for a good Wii game from Yuji Naka is to pick up Fishing Resort. ;)

Word from Sales is that it is in-store at Wal-Mart Canada and Toys R Us Canada. ^_^ Best bet is to call your nearest ones and see if they have it in. I believe both of them are stocking the bundle, too.

Ladies and gentlemen, I have a quiz for you. Just one question. How do you absolutely guarantee epic failure when lure fishing? How do you make lure fishing a completely baffling, incomprehensible, and profoundly frustrating experience? How do you ensure it's nearly impossible to catch a fish with a lure?

Hint: It's something I did the first day I bought the Wii back in 2008 and haven't changed since then.

OK, here's the answer! ...
Turn the Wii remote's rumble feature off!!!

I've read the game manual three times and haven't seen any mention about that. Have I overlooked it?

Can't begin to describe how baffled I was until I suddenly realized what the problem was. I wish I timed how long it took me to complete the lure fishing lesson. It went on and on and on and on because I couldn't catch a fish. I finally caught one by accident (yanking the rod around while reeling). It wasn't until much later, out in the middle of the lake on the boat (catching no fish), that I finally figured out what was wrong. Phew!!!

P.S. I love this game. Now that I've figured out how to fish with lures I want to stay up all night (in real life) and fish. Must sleep. Must resist urge to fish!!!

The fishing and actual fish look great, but I really do hate the disparity between the characters and the environments/wildlife.

Weird. The rumble feature let me know when they were nibbling on my lure, though it was much, much, more subtle. I too had problems actually catching one until I just happened to jerk the rod at the EXACT right time. But once I got the hang of it, it really got fun. Float fishing is chill and easy, but the extra effort required to catch a fish with a lure kept me interested (a nice little difficulty curve). I'm really happy you mastered it and have now completely succumbed to that sweet, sweet fish addiction. ^_^

They are a bit cartoony-looking at first, but after I dressed mine as pirate with a ninja sword, I never looked back.

Rumble is the only indication that you've got a nibble on a lure. Unlike float fishing, there is no visual clue (at least not that I've noticed). So if rumble is turned off (press blue home button on remote, click "Wii Remote Settings", click rumble "Off") you will be lure fishing without a clue. I turned rumble off in 2008 (literally) and haven't given it a thought since then...until I finally realized that was why I couldn't hook a fish with a lure (except by pure luck).

I picked this up the day after it came out (every Gamestop around me apparently got 1 copy of the bundle with the peripheral). To answer the question about the avatar, I didn't try to make it look like me at all - I just tinkered with it til I liked the look. The game is really fun so far, but the graphics on my LCD 47" TV are so aliased that it's difficult to play for long periods. So I have Dolphin (that emulator for Wii) and ended up buying 1 of those old LG disc drives that can read the Wii discs so you can get it to a state where you can play it on the emulator.

WOW. It's really a million times better looking, but I have messed around with a bunch of settings and haven't yet gotten it to run well enough to play it on there. For now I'm stuck while I either A) Learn to live with the graphics or B) figure something out to make it run better on Dolphin. It's very hard to go back now that I have seen what it can look like though lol!

Anyone else tried running it on there with any success??

P.S. Thanks for releasing this game here - I'm excited that the U.S. is still able to get niche titles like this, and without XSEED around we wouldn't have ever seen this one here =)
