What's this P90X workout stuff?

Phase Two complete. Was surprised at the subtle differences when comparing the photos to the end of Phase One. Only slightly slimmer, but a lot more tone around the guts and arms. Back also starting to gain some definition.

Weight is 83.8, so I've already reached my goal of 84 :)

Five weeks to go! Going to really push myself this last phase and try to get below 83 kilos, though I'm going to start eating more to make sure I get all the nutrients I need. Will also be swimming and jogging a lot more often now as it's summer in Australia.


What did you guys do as beginners when you were sore as hell after a workout? What happens if you're still sore a week later? Do you plow through the exercise regardless of pain or is that dangerous?

It really matters what type of pain you're feeling. If it's joint soreness, I'd personally be more reluctant to continue, as it may cause some serious injury. If it's just muscle soreness, push on through. After the second week or so, you won't be feeling nearly as sore as you first did since your body will begin to adapt.

Does the pull-up bar have to be set-up so high? Or will putting it in the doorframe do.

The higher the better, but a door frame is good enough (it's what I do). If you're tall, just tuck in your knees to your chest and it should be fine.

Yeah that is what I did and just did a dead hang for my first pull up so I wouldn't cheat on it.

The set up they have on the videos is ideal, but most people won't have that kind of space to put in a real bar.

started P90X classic on dec the 1st. My back is sore from Chest and Back , my legs and thighs are sore from Plyometrics and my triceps are sore from Shoulders and Arms. I'm LOVIN it :D

Ab Ripper X also made my abs kinda sore for a day. Surprisingly, it's the hardest workout vid for me to do. I did plyometrics fairly easily, I was jumping like crazy.

I started phase II yesterday, but I'm going out of town December 22 for 10 days and I'm not going to be able to do any p90x workouts while I'm gone so I was thinking of skipping the rest days for the next 2 weeks so that I can at least do all of the resistance workouts for phase II before I leave. What do you guys think??

I'd probably just put it on hold. Do cardio or whatever exercise you can do while you're away and pick up where you left off. So you'll finish in 100 rather than 90 days, but sometimes schedules don't cooperate.

My GF also wishes to do P90X with me and she's at 11 stone (hardlly overwight as she's 5'7) and wishes to loose 2 stone in the process. Is that doable?

Rest days are crucial. Your body needs to recover and without it you'll eventually hit a wall and see little progress. No personal trainer would recommend 20+ days of consecutive workouts.

Well, I've lost ~5kg and still have four weeks to go without following the diet, though I have been watching my calorie intake. Losing 2 stones (13kg) is a big ask for someone who's not really overweight to begin with. Though if she follows the diet and can stick with the workout, I reckon she will be able to lose at least a stone.

Out of curiosity, where are you from? I didn't know stones is still being used as a scale measurement.

I'd estimate I lost 35-40 lbs, but I was much more overweight than either of you.

Ab Ripper X was by far the hardest part in my opinion. I remember the first time saying "fuck this" like halfway through and shutting it off. Only being able to do like 3 shitty reps in the later exercises was pretty discouraging.

I'm from the UK and use to the stone metric. I can use pounds or KG if I want to but I'm just happy using stones. Thanks for the response though :)

It's important to note that P90X isn't really a weight loss program, it's a strengthening program. You are likely going to lose weight as a result, but I had next to no muscle when I started and I stayed even for most of Phase 1, even gaining on some days.

Lost fat and gained muscle during that time, but the scale hardly budged.

When it was all said and done I lost 15 pounds during that 3 months...but I had been eating properly for months ahead of this and had already lost 50 pounds by the time I started the program. If you've got a lot of weight to lose, I have no doubt you'll lose it if you continue to eat well and go through the program. Just have to be aware that the scale may not be your friend up front.

Completed my first round of P90X today and it's been a pretty good ride. I didn't miss a single workout, which is a great accomplishment for me. At the beginning of this year, I was 5'10" 189lbs and thought, I don't look horrible for being 40...then I started doing light cardio daily (assorted Kinect games and eliptical work) and dropped my calorie consumption to 1600 a day for a few months to get to 179, in time for summer vacation. I was miserable, though. Going to sleep hungry all the time, thinking of food before I went to bed. I'm sure that's not uncommon for people who cut their calorie count by that much.

A co-worker is who talked me into getting into P90X and that was the best decision I made, to go through with it this year. So the final tally is I'm 167lbs now, went from buying size 34 pants to 32 and from a large to medium shirt size. I've got muscle definition on my biceps and chest and the makings of at least a four pack of abs. Still have some fat I want to shed around my lower abs, but that's always the last to go and I never followed the nutrition plan at all, so that's something to take note of. Had I done so, I would likely have better results.

I used the Livestrong app on my phone and website to track what I ate for each meal and I totally recommend doing that. If anything, you'll have a good idea of what the cause is if you're feeling hungry all the time (not eating enough) and you'll have a visual representation of why you may not be losing weight (spiking calorie counts/cheat days etc). Just for reference, I have consistently consumed anywhere between 2000 and 2200 calories daily through this entire 90 days. I had a handful of mega-cheat days, Thanksgiving anyone? I also tried to at least "better" than before. I just made sure I wasn't eating dessert every night, rarely drank calories (water is your friend), but I still eat a cheeseburger and fries etc, here and there. I'm not eating less, hell, I'm eating more. I just had to make better choices and stay within my calorie limits. So I'm never going to sleep hungry.

So here's the bottom line, if you had asked me prior to 90 days if I'd be happy with the results I see in the mirror today, I would've said HELL YES. But today, I'm not. I ain't done yet and I'll start round 2 after a week of mixing and matching the workouts of my choice as a quasi-break. Once I get to the physical level that I'm satisfied with, I'll change my routine to maintenance, which won't be nearly as time consuming. The big take away for me is that going from 189 to 179 was misery and torture the entire 3 months+ it took and I didn't get many compliments regarding my physical condition. Going from 179 to 167 was torturous on my body for the first 10 days, but my physical makeup transformed with that 12 pound difference. Many friends and family have commented on the difference they're seeing and now are interested in (a few have begun) P90X. So ask yourself what your goals are. Do you want to be thin? Or do you want to be fit? I started at thin and now choose fit. Either way, it's a good situation to be in.

Look at that guy Kizzito Ejam. He says he never takes a rest and his physique is pretty fucking good. Even during the rcovery weeks I never actually did what p90x advised me. I continued like it was a normal p90x week. Fuck that shit! Everyday is vital for me. Last month starting for me tomorrow and I'll be doing chest twice a week, shoulders twice a week, arms twice a week, ab ripper 3 times (as normal), yoga once (as normal) and instead of the plyo and cardio I'll be doing insanity. And on two of the arms days I'll be doing an extra insanity workout.
So thats probably about 10 and half hours of workout a week for the next 5 weeks. I'm on a gap year so I've got time to kill.

I have only seen the videos, not their nutrion plan, but weight loss is 90% what you stick in your face. Because P90X is a strengthening program, the amount of calories you're intaking is supported by the amount you're working out. To people who want to lose weight, focus more on your intake of food than developing muscles (but if you want to do both, that's no problem either). Muscles will help burn fat more quickly but you'll get better results if you don't fool yourself into believing that getting bigger muscles = being able to eat poorly while still losing weight.

Now, I can only speak to my personal experience and it could very likely be coincidence or an anomaly, but I lost probably 8 of the 12 pounds I dropped during recovery weeks. It was the strangest thing. Happened during recovery phase 1 and I thought, finally...some weight on the scale going down, even though I knew I was burning fat and gaining muscle. Same sort of pattern at the end of phase 2, to which I thought, there might be something to this. Like clockwork, it happened again this past week. Again, I'm not saying there's any kind of scientific basis for this. But each recovery week, I lost 2+ pounds on the scale. Continue to do what works for you, but I find that week a welcome change going into the transition of the next phase.
 
Well, I finally ordered myself a pair of 52.5 pound PowerBlocks. They should be arriving on Tuesday.

I'm pretty psyched. I've heard nothing but great things about them, especially compared to the adjustable Bowflex dumbbells, which apparently break easily.

It will be so nice to not have to switch dumbbell plates for every exercise. And since I dropped a cool $240 on them (after $125 in Amazon gift cards), I have new motivation to kick myself back into gear. I've been in a two-month-long funk, and I've always found that buying expensive new equipment is a good way to get back on track.

I found my energy level dropping as the program got further along. At the end I found myself hating some of the workouts. Now I'm planning on taking it easy for a couple of weeks and as soon as I return from my trip in January I'll give Insanity Asylum a shot.

I am starting to get nervous... I plan on starting the program around the first of the year due to traveling often here in December. My worry is that I have a good deal of weight to drop. I have already lost 50+ on my own but I need / want to get back to where I was 10 years ago. I fully expect to complete the program more than a couple times to get to my goal.

My other issue is I am a very picky eater.. So the nutrition thing is going to be an issue but I will do my best.

Good to see others doing well on the program.. I hope to one day be working on toning areas more than dropping weight.

Oh, there have been some changes but not much that I can see. I didn't take any before/after photos so it's hard to tell. But like I said, I've been in pretty decent shape from boxing and running this past year. I've been doing pushups and pullups pretty much daily, and I've been physically active for the past 5 years (with a few brief pauses due to injuries). I could pretty much keep up with the videos for most of the workouts from start.

The greatest change I notice in my flexibility. I'm still not able to do some of the stands/poses in the Yoga workout but it's noticeably better.

Also I think my diet may be a bit off. I'm a vegetarian and it's possible that I'm not getting enough calories/protein or having too much carbs. But I'll think about changing that for my Insanity Asylum run.

Let me know what you think of the new program. I'm intimidated by it and think I'm not ready yet...but I thought that about P90X proper as well so maybe I'm just being a wuss.

I have been doing random (mostly cardio) videos from P90X lately just to make it through the holidays. I plan to start a full second run of P90X in January when there aren't trips to visit family every two weeks.

Last time I did it I got through it all and lost about 20 lbs, which was very needed. Since then I have put it back on though due to being unemployed (you'd think it'd be easier to work out when you have nothing to do...).

I plan to shorten it to a 5 day workout though, as I was completely burnt out after my first time through for a good 6 months until I started Couch to 5K this summer. I think I will just replace Yoga with Kenpo on Thursdays and do it that way.


For anyone with P90X2, can you still do all workouts with just free weights/bands and a pull-up bar? I see medicine balls and more, hopefully we don't need all that.

Someone got me this as a Christmas gift and I can't wait for it. I'm actually finishing up my 3rd month of P90X this month so it's perfect timing. If you don't mind can you tell me the equipments needed for P90X2? I want to stock up beforehand.

The worst thing about Ab ripper IMO is that you have to do it after the workouts. The last thing I want to do after my hard workout is roll around on the floor. If I did ab ripper first it would be a lot better I think.

I used to think plyo was the hardest, but since doing Couch to 5K this summer it helped me with that area. I still loathe yoga too, it's painful and I hate that it's an hour and a half. I usually replace it with Kenpo or Cardio X.

The additional gear is a bit of a pain but I'd rather have that with new work-outs over re-hashes.

Interesting. I know P90X is doing great things for my overall body strength. I've never felt better or been in better shape than I am now...and the workouts still kick my ass so I know that they will serve me well for a long long time.

P90X2 may just be a good change of pace when I get bored with P90X. I've actually downloaded the official P90X app on my iPad and use that while my wife watches TV. This allows me to watch TV with her and not steal the family room for an hour everyday and kick her out.

...very interested to hear what you think as you progress through the program, regardless. Keep us posted!

I haven't received it yet but I finally got a shipping confirmation email with tracking number last night. I got the same email you did originally. Should be here Friday.

I can already tell this is gonna be much tougher than the original despite what Tony says it just being "different". There's some absolutely wicked moves on this thing. Definitely a grad level program. Can't wait.

So whats the concensus on Ab ripper X? Does it give decent results?

Well, you can't spot reduce that area, but I will say that I have definition in my upper abs that I haven't had in like ever. Even when I was thin, I didn't have that kind of definition. It took me almost until the end of the 90 day program before I could do 25 reps of everything in 15 minutes. So yeah, I continue to do it 3 times a week.

I always do Ab Ripper before the main workout. I find it to be a nice warm-up.

Plus, if I save it for afterward, I end up being too tired and just skip it.

I've skipped it quite a bit too, though sometimes because of my sore back.

I think I'll try this for the remaining few weeks and just skip the usual warm up

edit: also, Beachbody still does not do international shipping? Do they not like money?

Just bought me some Perfect Pushup V2s and I couldn't be happier. My old pushup bars kinda sucked...just a couple inches off the ground with a shitty base that tended to roll if I went wide.

The rotation feels great and the grips are nice. Upgrade!

Just start doing the program. You will lose weight and put on muscle at the same time if you stick with it.

And if you finish the program you will automatically start to eat better once you understand how much work it takes to burn off the calories.
