Does a new console being outsold by its predecessor happens often?

I thought it was 500k confirmed and a lot of 3G units just aren't moving. Maybe people really only want the WiFi or at least WiFi/3G, and not the 3G standalone.

There is no 3G standalone.

Seems like Sony will have to pull a gamecube on the price if they want keep selling.

If this is the trend and the shipment is really at 700k units it might sell out in April.
I don't think SCE survives a 3DS-like price drop in the first 6 months. Sony has to ride this out. Any "break glass in case of emergency" software they have better be in production right now.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
The first shipment is 500k indeed.
Oh God, where is Chris, we need the new topic, which will enter in the history.
Where's French!!!!

Disappointing numbers for Vita. Less than 100k in the christmas week means that sales will likely drop under 20k at the end of january.
Quite frankly there aren't many reasons to buy a Vita for japanese gamers, the lineup is so poor and the price is high compared to 3DS.
Sony needs to drop the bombs announcing big games for the system.

Total sale for vita is a bit less than 400k, initial shipment ~500k

Yeah, this sounds like the last of the WiFi and 3G combos inventories being snatched up with 3G standalones being avoided.

Doesn't seem bad at all, Sony just didn't really read the market right.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
PSP is still selling well. I guess the momentum needs to shift from the PSP to Vita, but still, these numbers are slightly disappointing.

Even if you add Vita and PSP sales together the 3DS nearly sold 3 times as much - I don't think that's what they planned. Tracking behind the 3DS with its lackluster perceived launch is really surprising.

It has been like this for the past two years, I see no reason to be surprised. It's the first year though that this spike is not enough to take the YTD back from PS3.

I know, and every year I have to ask the same question. It was selling awfully and now all of the sudden the Wii is the one to get.

Wow Vita is dead :( What the hell, it sold 7x less than 3DS so even accounting for the price difference it's like 5-6x more. This thing is dead in Japan. Only hope is NA and Europe.

You mean the Wi-Fi and 3G/Wi-Fi SKUs.

And there haven't been any widespread reports of the cheaper Wi-Fi only model being supply constrained.

Vita will be discontinued 3 months after western launch, I will be one of the few who will be able to say 'I was there.' while proudly showing my untouched Wi-Fi copy of the legendary device.

These are disappointing sales for vita. There is no way to spin this. The titles to drive sales in Japan are not there for Vita.

Doesn't seem bad at all, Sony just didn't really read the market right.

There is no 3G standalone there is the wifi model at 25k yen and the wifi/3G at 30k yen, only the wifi model had some sold-out during the launch week but normally it has been restocked since then.
Edit:beaten

Ok, how is this possible.

Man I was totally wrong with my predictions for that one :( I totally expected it to bomb worse than any other Level 5 games this year...

I'm going to guess, christmas week with the Wii selling a lot. Maybe it'll be more frontloaded than the original?

Vita was PS3-ed the day Nintendo dropped the price and got MH because it virtually costs double of what the 3DS costs now (between PSP and DS there never was a difference of >5000Y). I was waiting to see the initial performance before calling this but it's pretty clear now.

I'd say the future outlook seem even worse, PS3 at least had big name games announced.

Road was right all along!

I think the devastating effort on Nintendo's side during the past eight months really made Sony look awful at launch, more or less like when people were retaliating against N when PSV incomplete E3 price was announced but tenfold.

I'd say the future outlook seem even worse because PS3 at least had big name games announced.

Not the same situation, PS3 screwed itself in the beginning, competition (for third party software) was nothing compared to what the 3DS represents.

And by "titles", you mean MonHun. Looking at the continued strong sales of 3G it's kind of hard to not draw a direct correlation.

Quick question: the software total sales numbers next to this week's sales numbers shows total sales prior to new numbers or including new numbers?

Sony listen to me damn you!

Find the largest truck you can find.
Fill it up with all the money you can find.
Drive it over to Capcom HQ to secure Monster Hunter 4 as a Vita exclusive.

After the disastrous zelda performance I wonder if nintendo will bail out of that franchise

It wasnt doing too hot in japan, europe and na

Just discontinuing it for one or two gens in favour of wii sports 3 and wii fit 3 woukd be much better for the wii as the typical gamer that is interested in zelda isnt paying attention to nintendo anymore

MH3G is doing pretty well too. Its tracking the same numbers as SM3DL, actually better so. It's almost 900K now and Capcom shipped 1M. It should meet it by the end of the year.

Capcom should easily meet its 1.2M fiscal year shipped easily now. Which is pretty freaking good considering how early and young the portable is.

that is the point. Sony usually does not read the market well, timing, games nothing makes sense. That thing is something both nintendo and MS do very well.
Great Vita price, but launches in Japan with Western games, instead it skips western holiday season and will launch , with economic crisis, in february at a premium price (despite being good for what the hardware offers). Weird to say the least.

It was obvious from the start that the Vita had zero chance of beating, or even keeping pace with the 3DS, but this is just plain BAD.

Ouch, as others have said there's really no spinning this. Those are bad numbers no matter how you look at them.

While the system has plenty for me personally, it lacks that big, broad mainstream title. Losing MH is proving to be devastating.

More like, Sony doesn't have anything on the level of Mario/Kart that are guaranteed to sell massively, and doesn't have MH anymore.

I don't understand how this wasn't priority one for the console, before the specs were even finalized.
