Game Info and Performance

Title (Region): God Hand (NTSC)
Summary: Completely playable at full speed
Completion: 100%
Default FPS: 60
Widescreen option available in game: No
Issues:
- Strange graphical errors during three cutscenes in the game that use a sepia filter, every other cutscene is fine.
- Due to a depth of field like effect, the game appears to be slightly blurry. You can reduce this effect by increasing the internal resolution.

Build and Plugins Used

Build: SVN r4980
Graphics: GSdx
Sound: SPU2-X

Emulation Settings -pic-

EE/IOP: default
VUs: default
Speed Hacks: enabled, EE Cyclerate - 1-3x, MTVU - enabled

Graphics Plugin Settings -pic-

Renderer: Direct3D11 (Hardware)
Interlacing: None
D3D Upscaling: D3D internal res - n/a, Scaling - 3x, Native resolution - no
Hardware Mode Settings: Texture Filtering - yes, Allow 8-bit textures - no, Logarithmic Z - n/a, Alpha Correction (FBA) - n/a
Hacks: HW Anti Aliasing - 0-4x, Alpha Hack - no, Offset Hack - no, Skipdraw Hack - 10

NOTE: Very high D3D internal resolutions may cause slowdown, keep an eye on your video memory usage and use the internal resolution + AA pairing that is right for your GPU.

NOTE: Bloom lighting will be disabled unless you use D3D11 renderer.

NOTE: Setting the skipdraw hack to 10 under D3D11 is a must. It removes some graphical errors from the screen and improves performance.

Made an updated God Hand config since the other one was a bit old and lacked certain pieces of information. Also this is practically the best game ever made.

I got a new 6 core 3.5ghz Phenom to replace my 3 core, and I thought I'd see how much better my games would run in this. Even with the newest build and mtvu hack enabled, it's a barely noticeable improvement. Is there something I'm missing as far as seeing a big improvement?
I think phenoms just don't perform as good as intel's offerings when it comes to emulation. Also, afaik, you won't see much improvement going up in core count. Pure cpu muscle is needed, and that's where intel shines

Game Info and Performance

Title (Region): Devil May Cry (NTSC)
Summary: Completely playable at full speed
Completion: 20%
Default FPS: 60
Widescreen option available in game: No
Issues:
- The HUD will appear in a small box in the top left corner of the screen when using anything above native res, but will sometimes stretch out to the proper area (making a save state and then loading it seems to do this reliably) however that portion of the screen will be blurred and low res.

Summary: Completely playable at full speed
Completion: 80%

Issues:

It's not the prettiest PS2 game, but it's easily emulated and is one of the best SRPG's I've played.

NiGHTS: Into Dreams...

A friend picked this up for me while he was in Japan last year. Decided to post some video of the Christmas NiGHTS mode in HD on my Youtube channel for the holiday.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLMTgNyGxg0&hd=1

I'm probably offending a few purists here but I didn't actually record it in full HD; it's being scaled from 4:3 to 1280x720 (but the game is running in widescreen so it looks correct - it's just you might notice some stretched pixels :p). I'm probably double offending some folks because it looks like imgur converted all my PNGs to JPEG AND resized them.

auU23h.jpg

Full gallery here
(they're just pics taken from the video before I compressed it, but you can supposedly get "full resolution" versions here).

Specs: Core 2 Duo E7600 (3066mhz)
2GB of DDR2-667 SDRAM (Kingston 99U5316)
Radeon HD 5670 (1gb)

Near as I've tried, this is the only PS2 game PCSX2 will run at full speed for me.

Does anybody know how to get Ratchet- Deadlocked to run at a consistent speed? It runs at 60fps until I look at a vista or something complex, then it goes in bullet time...

I don't think it's possible to run any of the Ratchet games (except maybe the ones that were ported from PSP) at full speed with any processor in existence today.

I've done it, almost constant full speed:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pi4kR4zoTUA

On an i5 2500 (3.3Ghz), with the multithreaded thing from the newer versions (helps the games alot), graphics are a mess though.

Do you have any other Ratchet & Clank games you can test? When I tried the first game on my OC'd 2600k I ran into some massive slowdown (fps dropped into the 20s) on the opening level whenever there were lots of polygons on screen. I'm pretty sure I was using one of the newer multicore builds, but I could be wrong. Anyway, I don't have the first one with me right now, but I just tried out R&C 2 on the latest SVN revision and it's still pretty slow, albeit not as bad as the first one was - it dropped as low as 40 fps on the intro stage when fighting lots of enemies, and I just got to the first planet and panned the camera around to look at the environment, which caused the fps to drop to the mid 40s when looking at some places. Maybe you can also post your settings if you can get better performance out of these games than that.

R&C3 is smooth for me as well, though a few drops:

I have the second one but I haven't tried it on this pc, I'll give it a go.

Okay I just tested the second game on these settings. I have a save fairly late in the game and checked a few planets. The swamp one was solid, but big city environments have a few drops.

My pcsx2 version is 0.9.9 r4866, haven't updated in a while.
On the speedhacks menu, I have:
speed0qqd0.jpg

And for gdsx I'm using DX11 hardware, 4x native scaling and texture filtering.
And I'm playing off disc, the PAL platinum version.

Bonus screen, it can look good even with the broken textures:

pcsx22011-12-2713-20-j0owz.png

Ah, I don't have speedhacks enabled. I don't really like using them since they tend to make object animations appear choppy.

D'oh, I just realized that you need to enable them to get multicore (>2) support. Guess I'll have to try that out later.

WTF?! Enabling the multithread microVU option did absolutely nothing for my framerate even though I have an i7. The jungle planet in R&C 3 still runs at 20 fps if I'm looking in a certain direction.

Does the Japanese version of Nights have an English language option?

Also can you please post your full settings?

Switching to Direct3D11 hardware is much faster in my experience.

Ah, that actually helps quite a bit. Still nowhere near constant full speed, though. I played through the first planet in R&C 2 at or near 60 fps most of the time, but on the second planet it's constantly jumping from 60 to as low as 30 which makes it super annoying to play.

NiGHTS does not have an english/japanese language option, but the game also has basically zero dialog (outside of Christmas NiGHTS) and almost no text. Everything save for one menu is all in english. The one Japanese menu is usually about saving/loading game data, and it's easy enough to discern, given the only option you have to figure out is "Do you want to overwrite this save? Yes/No".

Why they never released the Playstation 2 port in America given this fact is kind of a mystery to me.

As for emulator settings, I have everything on default except for GSDX9 rendering at 3x native.

Anyone tested King's Field: The Ancient City? Was wondering if there any emulation/performances issues before I start up a complete run.

I started playing it without any major issues except for a little slowdown in some areas but it's already a slow paced game so it's nothing that's going to do any great harm, it makes the music kind of creepy actually. I haven't changed any setting to try fixing it though so it may be fixable with a proper config. I did remap the controls though because I didn't like the original config as it doesn't use the second thumbstick for camera control. I'll upload my config file in a few. Game plays great for the most part and is much more playable with the framerate improvement.

Here's the config:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=0KDVF2MB

I also picked up Shadow Tower on the cheap which I actually like a bit better. Some are selling that on ebay for like 20 bucks brand new. It plays at 60 fps and perfect on my ePSXe so far.

Running the PAL version at 50fps on my computer completely fine on Revision 5019

Specifications:
AMD Phenom II X4 B60 @ 3.3Ghz
ATI Radeon HD 6770
8GB DDR3 RAM
Windows 7 x64

NTSC/60HZ Option: No.

Sucks about the lack of NTSC support, but all is fine. Was playing by disc so I'm ripping it now so I can see how it runs by ISO.

Thanks I managed to track down a copy. Can't wait to fire it up.

Whoa, I just tried Jak 1 with the speedhacks enabled and it's constantly running at full speed now. (Though it appears to be skipping frames occasionally when things get hectic.) It still looks like garbage due to upscaling issues(?) and the characters are still missing eyeballs, but it's very playable for me! Don't have Jak 2 or 3 with me to test atm.

Hm, is this just worse than Dolphin? I can run for example Super Mario Galaxy 2 at full speed but I just tried shadows of colossus and I have like...don't know...45FPS? 3xres and DX9Hardware.

my system should be powerful enough? 560TI oced to 900mhz and a 2500k oced to 4.3GHZ. Also, I can't see the FSAA options you guys are talking about. Just the upscale option.

Heeelp. :(

EDIT:

is it possible that audio latency/lag is quite severe? Also the thing is constantly crashing without even running a game because of some plugin errors or whatever...

My understanding is that the few games PCSX2 runs well, it runs VERY well. I've never tried Dolphin but I suspect nothing would run on it for me, but there's a small handful of PS2 games that run at full speed for me (NiGHTS, Kingdom Hearts, etc.)

Dolphin's level of compatibility is more general.

SOTC just isn't supported very well at the moment. I figure it's because the developer went a little insane and threw in all sorts of graphical stuff not found in any other PS2 game. I suggest that you pick up the HD collection if you haven't already.

For most other games, this emulator has performed very nicely for me!

Anyone know how to fix this issue when emulating Shadow Hearts? There are a few scenes in which character models don't appear on screen. It's mostly during cutscene-y conversations.

Monitors dont suffer burn in from black bars anymore...right? Just wondering if running something 4:3 for long periods of time (RPGs) will damage my monitor in the long run. Testing Shadow Hearts 2 atm.

All these in-game blurring solutions are killing me. Need a hacking task force to get some IPS patches rolling to disable these blur filters.

That depends entirely on what screen technology your Monitor is.

CRT: Mildly susceptible to burn in. Practically a non-issue with modern displays.
Plasma: More susceptible then CRT but major advances in technology during the mid-2000's has made it much harder for burn-in to occur.
LCD = Technically possible but ultimately very, very unlikely to occur.
OLED = Highly susceptible to burn-in and colour drift.

So yeah, as long as you're not using an OLED screen you should be fine though if you're using a Plasma TV as a monitor I'd recommend using grey bars instead of black bars.

Everything in my house is LCD so glad i'm safe. Plus I can post screenshots without a landslide of stretching complaints.

Except Jak X, which wont boot.

Are you able to run Jak 2 at full speed? I was hoping the new build and settings I've been using would help it out since they caused Jak 1 to jump up from ~45 fps average to constant 60 fps, but I just got the chance to try it out and it's still running at around half speed for me.

So i just finished up Shadow of the Colossus. the framerate held up nicely at 60 with few drops into the high 50's and rare drops into high 40's.

Epic game. completed first playthrough in almost 16 hours. Best 16 hours playing a PS2 game if my life, that's for sure.

Here's hoping team ICO never make a sequel.
2011-10-13_00001v2cxpc.jpg

I really wouldn't worry about ICO doing that.

Sony, however... I wouldn't put it past them. Didn't the movie rights get sold a few years back? I remember Idle Thumbs talking about that.

Yeah I get a decent speed with it. It easily drops though.

I think Jak 2 must be one of the rare games that relies more on your GPU than your CPU. I was getting major slowdowns earlier using 4x scaling (i.e. 2560x1792 internal resolution) and later when I set the internal resolution to 1600x1200, but then I tried setting it to native res and now it runs at full speed most of the time and only drops as low as 50 fps. Thankfully, the game usually runs a lot better outside of the city which lets me bump the resolution back up during some missions. I also took some screenshots, but none of them came out very good.

Jak games use some kind of blur filter/AA, so they always come out with poor IQ unless you supersample. So does Ratchet.

Naughty Dog way ahead of their time, open world, 60fps, AA, day night cycle, thousands of polys per character, all on PS2.

More of a game specific question but are there any cheats for DQ8 I can easily use in PCSX2 to disable/enable the random encounters at will? I'm only 5 hours into the game but about ready to give up because I'm getting stopped every 10 steps. It's insufferable after playing DQ9 and Xenoblade.
