Nvidia GTX 6xx/7xx Launch Thread of Swirling Kepler Rumors

Thought it was time to give the upcoming Nvidia Kepler GPU's a thread of its own. VR-Zone posted a juicy rumor today that confirms my belief that Nvidia is not pushing Kepler to June, but rather bringing it around March-April (which I've previously said would be the latest they could release Kepler unless they wanted AMD pounding their asses for 6 months.

According to our sources, what NVIDIA does not want to do is a paper launch of the product, thus the launch of their first high-end Kepler part will only occur once there are enough units for the first wave of consumers.

The company originally scheduled GeForce Kepler for the launch in the first quarter (i.e. fiscal fourth quarter 2012), Quadro Kepler was scheduled for the second quarter (i.e. fiscal first quarter 2013) and Tesla Kepler was scheduled for the third quarter (second fiscal quarter 2013).

However, the new plan calls for launching the GeForce Kepler when the company is able to insure hard availability and have all of its partners covered.

Will it be in the dying weeks or March or steal Ivy Bridge’s thunder with the launch around April 8... only time will tell.

Other stuff about Kepler: It may not be a GTX 6xx series, but a 7xx series, much like Nvidia leapfrogged 3xx series by only releasing it as mobile cards (360m GTS, anyone) and went straight to 4xx.

Next, I know for a fact Kepler prototypes are out in the wild being used in real world situations by those in the gaming industry who need them. That's really all I can say. Nvidia's developer relationship has not been abandoned and they definitely need all the support they can get with AMD putting out the stellar 79xx's.

I'll update this thread as more info becomes available, but I do truly believe NVidia is rushing hard to bring Kepler out in March or April, possibly April to coincide with Ivy Bridge since Nvidia is partnering up for Intel for Ivy Bridge mobile.

I'm not a PC gamer really but why do nVidia keep getting beaten to the punch by a number of months every launch? And is that likely to change in the foreseeable future?

Sometimes its hard to believe that the AMD that can't even begin to compete in the mid to top tier CPU market is the same company that gets it so right in the GPU market.

Probably because Nvidia's "big die, big power" strategy often backfires on them and they're left scrambling to get it out. AMD focuses on smaller, more efficient architectures and that's why they usually do much better launches and pricing, not to mention power efficiency.

There's a reason Nvidia refreshed the G80 core so many times with G92 (8800 GT, 9800 GT, 9800 GTX, GTX+, etc etc), and also had to redo the 4xx series. It's nothing new for them.

^^Thanks BoobPhysics101. The "big die, big power" strategy... does that lead to manufacturing issues too? Or is that inherent with what you said?

Huh, yeah... hadn't thought of that! But seeing as they bought(?) ATI as a going concern makes it clearer I guess.

What's the likely performance comparison between AMD's 7*** and the first Kepler parts gonna be?

Maybe I should just go Google... :(

Probably 30% better than the 7970.

I expect 680GTX > 7970(With Price Drop)=670GTX > 7950=660GTX.
Maybe somewhere in the beginning of the summer we'll get a 7990.

Larger and more complex = harder to get good yields

What K.J said.

And I think Kepler will be about as powerful as the 7xxx series, possibly a bit faster.

Licorice-flavoured booze?
This can't come soon enough, high end gpu prices are silly atm, hopefully if Kepler can kick some ass we'll start seeing some decent price drops, my gtx570 costs the same now as it did nearly a year ago, I keep getting temped to go sli but I really prefer a single gpu, kepler is soooo far off arghhhhh, damn you Nividia!

Way faster, I dont know why people are thinking these 7xxxx are such beasts, when they compare it to a 580 3Gb, the 7970 has a huge clock advantage, it should be compared against the 580 classy ultra with the 900 on the core, which also recently had a price drop to $550,

I wish someone would bench the 2 and compare

Ready to do away with my 1.5GB 580s in SLI. Such a fucking dissppointment. They can't handle maxed 1080p in today's most graphically demanding games.

They better get close or at least match 7970 performance. And at a reasonable price. More than just raw power, I want to see how they are managing power usage and other key things. Looking forward to seeing what they have in store.

I will finally upgrade from my great 5870. March-April sounds great, cant wait to see how the 680 will perform.

7970 is $750 here so I haven't even bothered to look at the AMD cards. The sooner NVIDIA releases the sooner I can upgrade at a great price.

Why do you assume they will be "great"? 580's are still pretty expensive. I see them hitting around the same price range. As I said before, I care about power consumption and other bells now more than ever. Physx is not a selling point either. Can't wait to see what they have coming.

I bought a 560Ti days after they launched, so I'm probably waiting until next year for an upgrade.

He doesn't necessarily mean that the Nvidia range will be the ones he will eventually buy - the launch of a competing lineup is likely to result in lowered prices for ATi, which means better value for money.

Next model on for me, I think. I only just got a 560 Ti back in October. It would have to be something truly mindblowing for me to plonk down for a new card.

This man knows what I am talking about.

I don't have insider knowledge. All I know is that 2 companies need to compete on price which is good for me, the consumer.

I will most likely grab a midrange card anyway since my 460 is still trucking on fantastic. Was tempted by the 560Ti but no real need to upgrade yet.

I'll be picking one of these up this summer. The question is what to do with my 580. Maybe use it for physx in Batman and maybe I'll finally get the game running at 60 in DX11 with physx on high. I should probably just try and sell it though.

Dude, be quiet. You're an admitted Nvidia fanboy and you don't know ANYTHING about Kepler or how much faster it'll be, if at all.

Next, why? Why do they have to have the same clockspeed? They have DIFFERENT architectures. Versus an OC'd GTX 580, a 7970 pummels it into the ground. deal with it. Seriously, what kind of ignorant fanboy asks for 'clock for clock' on two different architectures of GPU's? It's not like CPU's.

Also, 'clock for clock' @ 925 mhz means that the 7970 would be stock and the 580 would be overclocked quite a bit. Fail. :\ As has been posted before, here's an OC'd 7970 vs an OC'd GTX 580. The 7970 can OC even further.

And green with naivety. Poor little guy. After reading his previous 'omg nvidia is da best LOL no lie' posts, this little outburst comes off as quite funny. And pathetic.

Check this out:
Sad reality for AMD, the 7950/70 will be on the level of the current GTX 580's

I know, and I am thinking about swapping out my SLI GTX 480's for 2 Classified GTX 580's

Oh man.

I don't remember the last time Nvidia released a high end GPU that was competitive on price. I fully expect the GTX680 or whatever it is called to be $600-650 if it tops the HD7970.

Anyone remember the 8800 Ultra? That thing was like $750... and the dollar was worth more then.

Failest benchmark ever, it is compared it against the galaxy 1.5 MDT

and I said 3 comparisons

Stock the 900 vs 925 (Stock Classy Ultra, which is only $550)
Clock for Clock To compare the clock for clock performance
Max OC To Compare how far each can be taken

And also no matter how fast 1 AMD GPU may be, when you are looking at getting 2-4 AMD always has more problems with drivers and always will, quote me.

Galaxy MDT 1.5 is the only 580 that can do Eyefinity style displays.

Again, you don't know what you're talking about. Clockspeeds between architectures can't be compared, they are COMPLETELY different. Why do you think Nvidia's cards have 1/3 to 1/4th the amount of 'CUDA cores' as AMD has 'shader processors' on their cards?

The 7970 destroys any card around for OC'ing. People are hitting 1.7 Ghz core clocks on LN2 and 1.3-1.4 Ghz on air. I already explained about why your 'desired benchmarks' are completely asinine. Face it, the 580 just can't stack up, hell, an OC'd 580 still wouldn't be as fast as a stock 7970.

The XF scaling on the newer architecture is much improved. Someone else can post the link but I don't know who you can be so "take it to the bank or anti AMD". XF scaling improvements are one thing I've read AMD talk about for a while and to see what the potential is at this early juncture is more than encouraging. Is some cases you get near 100% scaling. It's a lot better right now and will only get better in the future. That being said, the other comparison was already posted against a super clocked variant on each side. Don't know what else you want to see.

As excited as I am to see what Nvidia has coming, I'm beyond impressed at the inroads and progress AMD has been making. They are in a position to be in the lead if things continue this way. Their architecture is far more compelling to me right now but we have nothing on paper yet in terms of extensive breakdowns and what not.

I will swing where the best value for the dollar is. If I had a choice right now, that 7970 and the impending 7950 would be on my radar before any other GPU from Nvidia.

Desperate fanboy is in denial about the fact that his chosen company doesn't have the best product around right now, so he's trying to figure out any way he can to rationalize a way to make it not true. Very common occurrence with goofy PC hardware fanboys.

Anyways, this has gone off topic. Can't wait to see Kepler and see what Nvidia has been doing for the last 1-2 years.

Do you understand that is a multiple display benchmark right? The "classy ultra" can only handle one display. I will most likely get Nvdia's 780 (they are skipping the 680 nominator apparently), but you are grasping at straws to discredit AMD.

All am I trying to state is this is not some god given graphics card, and that older architectures from nvidia can still keep up, and the newer one will be a lot better, but it seems the red team fan boys can handle this.

To the comment about nividia not having the best card, obviously the AMD card should be better the original GTX 580 was released November 9 2010.

It is better, but the fact that the red team seems to be proud and comparing itself to a last generation card is a joke.

The GTX580 is Nvidia's fastest single GPU offering so what the hell are people supposed to compare it to? You're talking nonsense.

These just a few variables to consider and will be compared and dissected further once we get the HW in our hands.

I can't wait.

I'm ok for now with a hd6870 but the new nvidia cards will bring a price drop for amd, and if they are good enough and affordable (and please nvidia no more 1.5GB or less cards) then I'll go team green for the first time since the geforce 4 ti 4200.

Really looking forward to good drivers and being able to use SGSAA like in all those screenshots in the screenshot thread, they make me so jealous.
I've been buying ATI since 2003 because they offered the best value but with the 7xxx they 've thrown that out of the window.

We need the competition back asap.

Graph 1,2 & 3 (Triple Display)
5040x1050, I realize it is comparing the comparing the multi display ability, but this is not a fair comparison, 1.5GB vs 3GB is the flaw here, throw 2 3GB 580's vs 2 7970's then compare that will show a real difference of the cards at a high res. (fairest would be vs the 580 Ultra)

Graph 3 & 4 (Scaling)
You don't see the trouble shooting that will occur in a graph, also the scaling issues really arise at over 2 cards, and I am aware I said 2-4, I didn't say amd would be bad at 2 I said nvidia would be better.

Power Draw may concern some but not myself personally. - no comment

But anyways I think I am done here no point in arguing this, I'll see you in a couple months and I will have a couple new cards :).

I built a new system the day the 3930k/RIVE came out and bought used 480's as a placeholder for the new nvidia cards and I can max BF3 with them

My card usage on both stays over 96 mostly seeing 99 on gpu 1 and on gpu 2 96-99 constantly chaning
Min FPS was 68.2
Max FPS was 179.1
everytime I phsyically looked at it it was hovering at about 74
Top card temp maxed at 77 bottom card at 69

I have an i5 2500K OC'd to 4.5ghz. in batman I get to 60 FPS and it does a bit of slow down when there are a lot of enemies on screen (and I use the ice grenades) but it only hiccups, 95% of the time it's at 60. I'll go home and double check tonight.

Thought it was time to give the upcoming Nvidia Kepler GPU's a thread of its own.

Why is it time now? Is there any credible information to discuss? Within the last week I've heard rumors ranging from February to June. I think the reason this thread turned to nerdfight so quickly is that there's nothing worth talking about yet.
