Los Angeles |OT| GAF's Guide to the Greatest City in the Universe

Los Angeles is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the absolute worst place I have ever been in my entire life and the fact that anyone is there because they want to be and not through some horrible twist of fate is kind of mind boggling to me.

That is all.

Does that mean you're not coming to the K-BBQ meet up?

I think it's pretty decent fot the convenience but nothing special. Nobody in my circle of burger lovers though much of it either. In the same price range, golden state is much better. Unfortunately it's not in west la :/

Bah, maybe your group is like the hamburger illuminati or something. Hole is the only place I havent heard someone complain about...until now :(. It is a little pricey though. However my LA knowledge is limited and I need to check out this Golden State place.

Someone mentioned Ta Bom, who also had amazing food. They closed up shop a couple weeks ago, from my understanding. They're dropping like flies now.

I did, and its still around. They mentioned something before the end of the year about redoing their trucks and having to be on vacation for a couple of months.

Other places worth mentioning:

Musha in Torrence (try their risotto)
Good Stuff burgers - for their onion rings, the best in the WORLD.

and some of random LA pics:

When I had to move to LA for a job, everyone started hating on the city. I was really surprised when I got here and found out most of them were either full of it or just following what they saw on TV. I'm not saying thats the case here though. This just sounds like you haven't been to too many places.

I can probably think of worse places to live.

This statement is ridiculous.

My friend favors Hwang Jang Korean BBQ at 480 N. Western Avenue in Koreatown. $10 all you can eat.

All in favor?

Shit dude, remember Grindhaus? Those dudes were legit. Sad they lost both the truck and the shop. That duck sausage with chocolate and cherry was surprisingly good

YES! Those guys were legit, sad I never got my wholesale of duck sausages from them!

I'm suggesting next weekend (Jan. 27-29)

I can possibly do the Saturday of that weekend but I prefer not to because it's DineLA and I'm going to Fogo de Chao on that Sunday so too much eating for 2 days in a row.

If we can do it Feb 4th?

That's almost too cheap... What's the catch? The usual going rate is $15~19. I think $10 might just limit you to flank slices or something.

Is your website called The Tanooki or Theta Nooki? Because I like Theta Nooki better.

I'm fine with that.

Yeah, it's a limited menu.. something like 5 items, but all the essentials are there IIRC (beef and pork bulgogi and chicken). You can choose from more expensive menus. The problem is that the whole table will have to pay the same price. I'm fine with going more expensive.

Its downtown and parking probably costs a fortune.
Parking is a problem but my friend tells me they offer $2 valet. So that's not bad.

Now, depending on how expensive we want to go, I might suggest a different place, e.g. Soowon Galbi. It'd definitely be over $20 per person, but the food is magnificent.

I really enjoyed Road to Seoul and it is pretty damn big so might be good for a group. Cham Sut Gol is probably the most popular in Orange County, haven't tried the Koreatown location though.

I'm never a huge fan of AYCE because you always end up with pounds of tasteless brisket. Bring on the Kalbi!

Okay. So date is set: Feb. 4.

I like the Road to Seoul suggestion. I've been there. Really good. But I leave it to you guys:
Soowon Galbi or Road to Seoul?

I like Road to Seoul too but I worry about the wait for a table and it can be a little loud in there but not unbearable for conversation.

For an all-you-can-eat it has decent options too and the quality of the meat is good from what I last remember. If you can't find the cheap valet then parking can be a bitch.

;_; Now I'm starting to wish I was back in Ktown. Damned buses/no trains that go anywhere useful!

I need lunch suggestions in Hawthorne for tomorrow. Somewhere casual and first date friendly.

No Indian food either alas.

This is that thread :p

If it's Feb 4th there should be enough time to set up rides and such. I'm in Alhambra and would be willing to take along 2 or 3 dudes within a 5 mile radius.

Proudly debt free. If you need a couple bucks, just ask.
Yeah I think a new thread for every meetup, and keep this at the general OT / discussion thread.

I just wanted to point this out. Anyone who loves red meat should definitely try and make it to this ABSOLUTE STEAL for DineLA. It's Churrascaria style BBQ and Fogo de Chao is probably the place to get it in SoCal. Usually it costs an arm and a leg there but if you go during lunch for DineLA, its only $28. Dooo itt.

I'm meh on Fogo de Chao. I've been to the one in Baltimore and it always seems like I get never get the right meat-dude to bring me what I want. That and the sides were meh. Though for that price I might do it.

I rather liked what I got last time I went but unfortunately they got rid of the free desert but that means more room for meat.

I'm down for the Korean BBQ next weekend. Currently in Downey and having car problems till I get my tax return, but if someone can pick me up I'll chip in for gas and pay for your meal.

Born and raised in L.A. btw. Grew up in Arcadia/626 but lived all over. Best city in the world IMO.

^This. I miss storms, snow...seasons... Time just seems to blur here because it's always the same. :/

Be careful what you wish for. I felt the same way, being someone who was born and raised in L.A. county and wanting to see something different after high school. I moved to the east coast for college and have been in various parts of the country for the better part of the last 10 years. Snow, seasons and public transportation get old incredibly fast. L.A. is the best. So many people take this place for granted; I think many locals need to live someplace else for a couple years to get some perspective and regain an appreciation for L.A.

exactly. when i was in the Army, i got to travel to Colorado, Texas, Virginia and South Carolina. Cali weather is the best by a long shot!

I might be able to make it. The people from the Burger meetup all got home without being raped or murdered, right?

I'm still in one piece :) I think people gotta remember the other people posting on this forum are just like you...if we weren't then we wouldn't be here.

there's gotta be another member of LA girlgaf who wants to go. is it weird that i don't want to be the only girl in the group?

I can probably give a ride to people in the South Bay for that Feb 4 thing.
No murderers or hijackers please.

If we can find another or two, I'd be in.
I can neither confirm nor deny that I might be planning a hijacking.

I've lived all over the world, LA is just my latest stop. I also just can't let go of my terrible joy at violent storms. I miss them so.

I'm practically in. Just waiting to see if another wants to carpool with doitlive. :)

To anybody living between Arcadia and the meetup in K-Town I can pick up or I can carpool, I prefer to drive and I don't expect you to pitch in gas too just be warned I drive a 99 Corolla and while its clean and free of ambiguous liquid stains it is a bit cramped for taller people. So let's get this organized better once the meetup thread is up.

Seriously it's not fucking humid like East Coast or Chicago.

It doesn't fuck snow, don't romanticize it with that first snow of the season bullshit because all I can think about is driving or more like skidding in a metal coffin and shoveling it in Colorado NOT FUN.

The only thing is the summers can be brutal if you can't afford to run your AC often.

Living without a car is something I want but at the same time I would have to keep one for weekends because as much as people want to tout public transportation I did it in Hong Kong for a few months and the main issues are if I purchase something I will need to carry it around with me all day unless I want to go back to the apartment which is out of the way because I'll just be double backtracking since there is still stuff to do in the busy parts of the city.

That's why I think I could do it for San Francisco, Chicago probably not as much and definitely not NYC.
