Microsoft intends to incorporate some sort of anti-used game system as part of their so-called Xbox 720.

I may not like GameStop, but I view used games as being essential for keeping games available in the long run, even if being pushed in the launch window is lame. If this is for real, Microsoft exclusive, AND isn't something more mild like online passes/extra content easier to put in with every game (Kinect scans a QR code bundled with each one?) then I'll really hope this blows up in their face catastrophically. Pulling a Vita and mandating simultaneous DD releases will help, but unlike a physical game those can be pulled without warning and never put back up, you'd need a court order to do the same to a physical game and as such that's VERY rare.

wait, so if i buy a used console AND used games that have been played on that console i'm good right ?

So next time you want to borrow games from a friend you can, you just have to borrow his console as well.

I'm assuming that's how it works, games being tied to a console..

Have gone without buying a single used game this gen, never sold away anything that I bought either... but I sure as hell hope that with this initiative comes lower game prices. Wishful thinking, I know... :(

Microsoft surely realizes that attempting to incorporate used game prevention (which is idiotic) is like painting a gigantic bullseye on their system for the hacking community, right? It's an open invitation to allow all the so called 'freedom fighters' and various idiots in the 'scene' to converge on this thing with a vengeance. Ah well.

I wouldn't doubt if c4eva and team completely mutilates this thing a month after release.

Usually if I buy a used game it's from the prior generation. I'm thinking of grabbing Grandia III from GameStop for example, just so I don't miss out on it period and because I liked the first two games plenty, but if the worst case scenario happens for this Xbox (no guaranteed digital release in addition to tying games to a system) I couldn't do the same when the next-next Xbox rolls around.

I actually can't think of any used games I've gone out and bought for this generation. I DID get one gifted, Bomberman Act Zero, but that was partially a joke and anyways avoiding that wouldn't be worth missing out on, say, buying Assassin's Creed II years later because I want to get into the series and maybe uPlay implodes on PC or something.

whatever, they would hack it anyway, being it anti-used or not.

So what about this.

>New xbox comes with kinect by default
>Also comes with 3g in the box, not available for anything else but game registration
>Games come with a barcode
>You have to scan the barcode with kinect, it gets tied to the console/account
>After registration you can even throw the disc away, a digital download for that game is tied to that console/account

thougths?

What's funny to me is I just proposed this EXACT configuration to someone today at work, down to the always-on 3G for registration only.

The big problem that I'm sure everyone else has pointed out in this thread is that MS is not competing in a vacuum. Is MS went anti-used-games and Nintendo and Sony did not, you can bet your sweet bunny boots that would be a "$599" level of screw-up on their part. People would not be able to ditch MS fast enough once they found out.

Not that I believe todays next Xbox merry go round of fake rumors (still waiting on todays gameboy color chipset in XB720 rumor to be posted), BUT

There would be another side to it, perhaps third parties would be more prone to support the Microsoft console, either because of a belief in higher software sales or actual higher software sales.

Not saying that's what would happen, or I dont think it's a horrible idea.

It sounds like total bunk again though (I dont even know a method by which you could lock out used games...), and all these wesbsites have zero credibility about next Xbox, they've all been wrong about it 30 times already.

I honestly don't see what's so bad in an anti-used game system. In a couple years most games will be offered digitally for the same prices you'd find them used in your local game shop.

*IF* they offer games for that sort of money then fine but I seriously doubt that companies like EA will be selling games at anything less then full retail via DD.

If that is the case then I'm out of the console business.

Nobody has dev kits? Thats 100% bullshit, considering my insider at Blizzard who is working on the Titan framework has had access to a near final "next Xbox" dev kit since November. He wont tell me the details, he can't and even eluding to the dev kit in general was a dog and pony show because he is under NDA personally signed. Next xbox dev kits are in the wild, whether or not they are final and the specs are another discussion but they are out there that I can say.

edit. When I say, near final "next Xbox" that means in November of 2011 they were send their second version of the successor dev kit, this one in closer to final looking casing and instructions to focus on the new specs.

They wouldn't need to scan anything or enter codes. They could just have a unique, readable serial on each disc like DIVX did way back in'98.

eh, third generation isn't the one where they screw everything up, like sony did with ps3? It could happen, I rather hope not. Used games are awesome :(

No one would buy it. They'd be better off developing for the Game.com... maybe 3DO.

I don't mind a system that ties the game to the console but it's not really about the views of people on neogaf but the general public (remember all the posts on here how no one will buy the kinect).

Whatever system they use it will include physical stores as an option to buy additional licenses for consoles.

The only downside is the next step is buying the software will be tiered with different prices for length of the license.

I hate unti-used-games policy.

I don't even sell or trade games, but it's nice to know that my collection has a certain value. I can lend them to friends, neighbours and relatives. I like having friends in my room and checking the collection.
If the games cannot be played on other consoles, why even bother having a physical copy? Why wasting my space with discs which don't have any value right after entering the console the first time? Just make them downloadable, at least I can save some space.

Physical copies of games would be worthless like apps, which don't have reselling value either. If a game doesn't have reselling value, even $20 is hard to swallow.

I think the average consumer would just buy because, hey, new Xbox! Only to get a cruel surprise when they try to borrow games. We'll see whether they just go "dammit" and buy the game themselves, get the competitor's more open system, or just not bother playing games.

Of course, I'm sure GameStop would make sure employees stress the point they can't buy used, and that'd probably take a solid chunk out of sales. Or it really is nonsense much like the PS3 rumors for similar, whichever.

Heh, I get nothing more from him and getting what I have was a few days of pecking away at loose details. Ultimately he simply confirmed due to excitement in his division at Blizzard. He said the specs were nice enough to cause a buzz in the small team that had access to it currently. That team is restricted to framework engineers and higher level directors, knowledge of it outside of them doesn't exist in the company. This is the same guy that handed me a signed copy of Starcraft 2 from all the lead designers.. so its pretty legit.

Who knows what it means, could suck balls.. but I got a different impression. I believe that at E3 this year MS is at the very least going to tease the successor. So we'll all know soon enough is my guess.

All these rumors are crazy and I'm not helping by adding fuel to the fire. :/

SHIT JUST GOT REAL SON.

They wouldn't need to scan anything or enter codes. They could just have a unique, readable serial on each disc like DIVX did way back in'98.

That would increase disc production costs, which is my guess as to why DIVX discs cost as much as ~$5 each to "rent": it all came down to costs. Just a theory, though. But it certainly wouldn't be as simple and easy just saying "all discs are identical." Inserting a piece of paper with a unique QR Code to scan into Kinect v2 would be infinitely cheaper than individually customized discs. And it would achieve the same end goal. Both methods would require some kind of always-on online authentication/tracking solution like the 3G idea, though. Otherwise, two offline consoles could play the same game using the same registration code between each other, which totally defeats the purpose.

An alternate solution along the same lines would be to include a special writable sector on each disc where the initial console's internal serial no. would be burned into the disc, either permanently or semi-permanently. But that would also require a more expensive BD-R drive, not just a BD-ROM. However, it does not require the overhead of an always-on 3G network or a built-in 3G wireless chip. If the certification is done at a disc level, that makes the most practical sense.

It cost basically nothing. There were a lot of reasons they were $5.50. The most basic one is that DVD had only been out a year, and a dual-layer disc still cost ~$3 to replicate.

Yeah because what Microsoft wants to do is piss off the largest video game retailer in America.

They wouldn't be if the console manufacturers got together and decided to bury them.

Rumour: Blizzard's Next Gen MMO Coming To The Next Xbox.

Kotaku going to have a field day.

Oh guys don't get you knickers in a twist...

All this based on 2 lines in a Kotaku article...

What is more likely:

1) MS will block all used games sales as part of 720 through a license system
2) MS replaces publishers different online-pass systems by one single platform based system which publishers can choose to use, or not.

I built my 100+ current gen collection mostly on used game sales (80%, approximately). This new Xbox machine is starting to get out of reach for me.

More like Diablo III coming to even more consoles. Color me shocked.
There will never be another third-party MMO on a MS console.

It's Kotaku. They just made some shit up and said it was a rumor so they didnt have to deal with accountability.

Look:

Rumor Xbox 3 will run on worms and only play worm games like Worms Armageddon and Worms World Party

They wouldn't be if the console manufacturers got together and decided to bury them.

Yeah because why not just do that for no reason. Sounds like a plan.

What if your kinect breaks? You wont be able to play any games?
What if you don't have internet connection / 3g connection
What if the barcodes is fked up in some way, run back to store 10 times (but that happens with CD keys too I guess)

I wonder if that'd be illegal? And anyways GameStop IS performing a vital function, even if they perform it in a reprehensible manner (along with other crap), I prefer giving them as little business as possible unless they're matching how I'd prefer them to be run (see: Grandia III example above) but they're still a significant gateway to niche games and finding older ones without resorting to online shopping, possibly from dubious merchants. To cut them off without a matching rise in DD would critically undermine niche games and make finding older ones that much harder, nevermind if the worst case scenario for an anti-used games system comes into play.

More ideally to me they'd get enough pressure put on them that ANOTHER game chain can actually rise, but this doesn't seem like a good time for any new brick & mortar chains to kick off.

This system will probably use the Blu Ray anti-copying and device lock feature that I read about long ago, where a serial number is generated and put on the disc. The Xbox 3 will probably register that number, and if its found to have already been used on another system, blocked from online access, like many games do now.

It'll be standardized. And the system works, IMO. As long as activation isn't outrageous it'll be fine, and if you have to buy a new system the games will be tied to your XBL account.

I'm ok with the anti-used game stuff.

Not sure why GAF is so turned off by that. Yeah the playing borrowed games thing would suck but seriously between GAF and YouTube, it should be pretty damn easy to determine a worthy purchase.

Some of us also sell back games and use that money to fund purchasing more games and trade games too.

Aside from the obviois downside of anti used games, the console sounds great

All I ask for is faster dashboard navigation while in games, and better mic quality

And a $300 launch price

P.s. can someone tell me how to make your text look black so someone has to highlight it to see it? You know, for spoilers? Thanks

The powers that be have the right mindset, you will buy new games despite not being able to sell old ones. Yep there are exceptions, but they will only wait to purchase new games longer after release.

if the industry plans to go digital may be it would.
Better to kill because of actual progress than actively antagonizing them and your customers.

Although, that IS a point highlighted, using the game to get a digital copy and not NEEDING the disc. In which case I wouldn't be too comfortable with it but, well, isn't that closer to how Steam works? It compensates for being DRM by providing you with services and being relatively loose about how and where you run your games, rather than just being an extra barrier to playing. It'd still prefer that to remain in the realm of PC games, but at least if I could just download every Xbox game I got it wouldn't be so bad.

Anti-used game system means no MS system for me next go-around.

I won't support any of that crap. That's infringing on personal rights as a consumer.

This ^^

A major deal breaker for me if this ends up being true. Looks like I'll only be getting 2 out of 3 consoles next gen instead of all 3.
