Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
I'm in for Sailor Badass from that picture alone. I still need to watch Samurai...

That's all good, but I was addressing the dudes who don't seem to watch anime very regularly and are expecting the best show of the decade. Not saying that it can't be, but damn lower the bar a bit.

Well, honestly, best TV anime of the decade isn't a particularly high bar. If they don't watch anime regularly and aren't interested in any of the shows in the past few years, and they're interested in this one, it already stands a good chance of being their best show of the decade if they like it at all! :)

Yeah, I know I like to downplay it when extremely talented people get together for the first time in years to work on a show which seems tailor-made to play to their strengths.

Oh wow this is great news to wake up to. I was even wondering the other day what Watanabe was up to these days.

After Bebop and Champloo, this is not exactly what I was expecting as his next thing but I'm damn well gonna be watching this. Jazz is awesome too and judging by the trailer, this is gonna be fun.

Go to the official website and try throwing your credit card at the screen.

It's not working!!!

I realize I could be setting myself up for disappointment, but music was such a huge part of Bebop and Champloo. I'm really excited about the prospect of Watanabe and Kanno teaming up on an anime that is literally about kids who like to play music. Plus I was a band geek so this is right up my alley anyway.

Ah dammit derp

I meant "in the last 10 years", but yeah I aso hope that all the people excited for it end up liking it. Just worried that they'll end up judging it unfairly based on some unreasonable expectations.

Absolutely hyped. Spring is going to be absolutely blockbusting. Shit man, never thought they'd do something again.

Eh. I was hoping he'd do another action series. I don't watch a whole lot of high school drama series. But will be definitely listening to the soundtrack. A new Yoko Kanno soundtrack is welcome.

noitaminA has had its fair share of weird and pandering pieces of crap on its airwaves so the criticism is justified. However, Ano Hana is not one of those shows. I'm very selective about the anime I choose to watch and Ano Hana has a premise that I usually brush off. But I gave it a chance anyway since it's so goddamn popular and I was shocked to find out that it's really good. It handles its simple little story with dignity alright.

Don't lump Ano Hana with the Guilty Crowns of the world.

Ano Hana sold more iirc.

e: yep, much more.
Those are H&C's DVD sales vs. AnoHana DVD + Blu-ray sales. Looking at just the DVD sales, H&C beaten AnoHana in terms of performance. The thing is H&C doesn't have Blu-ray on sale yet so we can't compare its performance yet since judging from DVD vs. Blu-ray sale of AnoHana, there is a significant jump in purchase for the two different medium.

Can't stand the pedantic and often pretentious conversations about music in Japanese literature, and I expect the same annoyances from this show. Will watch anyway though.

Ano Hana was pretty pandering, just in a different way than Guilty Crown. It's a KEY anime with better character designs.

You can't really compare DVD to DVD sales, because that ignores the fact that most anime nerds have moved on to BD.

Wow. About of damn time. Make way for the best director in the industry. He dropped off the face of the planet after he did baby blue.

Ps any fans of this man should check out that short. It's awesome.

As far as his directorial style in it, I think this show is fit to channel much of it, which is fabulous. Baby Blue had an atmosphere of such dread, so somber, so effective. I loved it.

Hah, those are the words I used to describe it when I wrote a review for my friends back in 2008. Both the art style and the soundtrack merge together seamlessly to deliver that melancholic yet beautiful and realistic touch.

God damn it's been 8 years since Champloo. I can't believe it's been so long.

My one wish for the music of this show is that they get ryuichiro senoh to do a piece for the ost. He was the man responsible for Spokey Dokey.

From what I know of the story, it's just piano + drums.

Crushing disappointment coming. I can't enjoy this so called Jazz without some kind of sexy sax in it somewhere. I want the OP to be the second coming of Tank! which is still, imho, the best OP in the history of forever.

Then we have nothing to compare because H&C is not released on Blu-ray yet.

Anyway, this show's vibe reminds me a bit of that Japanese movie, Swing Girls.

I don't think you understand what he's saying. Back when H&C was released, blu-rays didn't exist. Hence the DVD sales represented 100% of the anime buying audience. When blu-rays were introduced into the market, they didn't create some new audience base that didn't exist before. The people who bought DVDs just mostly migrated to buying blu-rays instead since they're paying 70 bucks for 2 episodes anyway.

WATANABE-SAMA HAS FUCKING RETURNED

...and he's directing an anime about...high school jazz musicians? ^___^;

Yoko Kanno is that good stuff, though. Can't wait.

Among the very few live-action Japanese movies I've seen in the last few years has been Swing Girls, which I would highly recommend. It's basically your generic sports movie, except the sport is big band jazz.

... dammit, beaten.

you dont need no stinkin' winds for good jazz

How dare you! The sax is the greatest instrument ever conceived by man followed closely by the piano. If this will have big band like jazz, then saxophones, trumpets and the like are an absolute requirement!
