I'm in the market for a brand new mattress and the last time I was at Ikea, I was trying out mattresses and some of them felt real nice. The last time I went and purchased a mattress from a traditional mattress store I had a pretty terrible experience (harassing salesperson, inflexible delivery schedules, etc). The mattress ended up going to crap only a couple years after we bought it, which absolutely sucks, because of what we spent.

What has me gravitating towards the IKEA mattress is the 25 year warranty and how good all of the IKEA furniture I've purchased thus far has held up. Anyone have any experience with IKEA mattresses and/or their return policy?

Last time I bought a new mattress I went with one of Ikea's pricier models and it's the best one I've had.

Although I've no personal experience with the return policy, I do have 2 of their mattresses (king-size bed ;-) and it's great so far (I've had it for 3 years now)..
I do have a friend who worked at Ikea in the past and their return policy is amazing. People came back with a mattress after 10 years, and if you still have the receipt you can get a new one right away...

I would definitely recommend it...

I recently bought a new mattress at IKEA as well. I haven't looked up their return policy but thus far it's feels like high quality stuff, such a difference from my old, cheap one.

I've had one of the pricier Ikea mattresses plus an "over-mattress" for around 10 years now, and they're great. Definitely recommended. I bet they'll last me another 20 years. But you can of course get much better quality and comfort from other brands if you're rich... I stayed at a posh hotel this weekend, and the mattress in my room was amazing.

I got a whole bed set for my birthday last year and I am about a year in with it and I have no problems so far. My mattress is named Sultan Hjelmas. I went to a warehouse/store nearby here and was able to try a ton that they had out on display.

i'm in the minority here but both the double bed and mattress we've bought from ikea have been utterly terrible. the two sets (?) of slats fall through and the mattress is way too thin. seems like everyone else has had a good experience though!

I went with their cheapest thinnest foam mattress a couple years ago ($200?). I personally wish I'd gone a little thicker. My wife definitely thinks we should haven

That said, it's been pretty good. Definitely better than the spring mattress it replaced.

Two months ago I bought 2 twin Ikea Sultan Elsfjord (latex) mattresses and so far they are perfect. It's a firm mattress, but not too firm.

I had one of their small, cheap coil mattresses a couple years ago. It was adequate for sleeping but nothing I would recommend. I bought a quality box spring and mattress late last year and it is 100x better.

My ex had an Ikea mattress and it was OK, nothing special. IMO, W Hotel (yes, the hotel chain) and Tempur-Pedic make the most amazing mattresses. A mattress is not a purchase you want to cheap out on, considering how much use it'll be getting.

Thanks guys! We're looking at getting a pricier IKEA mattress (at least $1,000). When we were there and laid down on one (I dno't remember the name) it was heaven. Our current Serta mattress has lasted 4 years and is total crap... it's killing my back and we have started to roll into the center. Ugh. Never going with Serta again.

I got an IKEA bed frame about two years ago and haven't had a single issue with it. I can't remember what it's called, but it's been pretty comfortable.

My MALM frame has been fine, although I don't sleep on it much since I'm at school most of the semester.

I also have one of their latex mattresses and it's divine.

My advice. Buy a cheap mattress(a little on the hard side) and get a $300+ memory foam topper. 3 inches.
imo its more comfortable than my friends $1500 full memory foam mattress.

Check their warranty policies and see if they are as horrible as others where a stain makes it ineligible or it has to be sagging 2" to be replaced.

Any mattress you get that has thick coils or is a better foam type should be fine.

I'll second the idea of a semi-firm and memory topper as a decent option.

I agree with the sentiment about their bed frames. Definitely kinda weak. But yeah, we have an Ikea mattress and it's pretty awesome.

i worked in returns so i feel confident in the ability to say this.

they are returned on an extremely high basis due to people not liking them. a lot of people also would complain that after a year the padding kinda gives in.

edit:

also for the record, if you do not keep a copy of your receipt they will not cover your mattress for warranty. the company doesn't file away transaction history for more than a year, it 100% falls on you. i've had times where my old managers would refuse a mattress for warranty because it was too dirty or gross so it was there fault. in the event you don't have a receipt they can look it up within approx a year if you give them the date of purchase, the total amount of purchase and the last 4 numbers of your card (they will try to avoid you if you paid with cash) however due to the shitty point of sales system ikea uses, some managers will deny this ability. when they look at transaction history it is sorted using item numbers so its hard for the employees to find what you bought... and only a manager can do this.

AND ALSO, if you do get one. keep in mind the return policy on mattresses is "love it or exchange it" that means you can only exchange it. when they do the exchange you get a store gift card which they claim can only be used on mattresses, this is false. you can use it on anything in the store. some stores put stickers on the gift card so that an employee can't use it on anything except a mattress (but at the store i worked at no employees enforced that). if this is the case and you get a sticker on your card, just use it at self checkout and you should be golden.

last of all. for any purchase at ikea get a receipt. half the shit falls apart in a year. the more paperwork you have to prove your purchase was within a year/reasonable amount of time.. the higher chances you have of getting an exchange or a refund. i would make copies of your receipt and tape them under/behind the product. just make sure you have something to fall back on (this advise falls under more than just ikea i'm sure). if you bring back something broken, chances are they will not try anything to find your receipt in their system.

This, the slats underneath work loose and need to be refitted also the bolts get loose and start squeaking, I've actually one time had to get off the wife and re tighten them as it was putting me off my strokes. The mattress is awesome though.

EVERY Ikea mattress is called Sultan!


There actually is a naming scheme, though. Foam mattresses are Sultan F-something (like 'FIDJETUN'), latex mattresses start with 'E', and spring mattresses start with 'H'. (Excluding their one super low-end mattress that starts with J, doesn't have the 25 year warranty, technically isn't part of the Sultan line, and is so low end even Ikea doesn't recommend anyone sleep on it every day: "suitable as an extra bed") And their foundations/box springs start with 'A'.

The people weren't usually fat. But a bed made out of cheap cardboard filled wood isn't exactly sturdy.

I'm with everyone who says go Costco, it's a solid return policy, better price, better quality.

I have a Simmons mattress, it is 10 years old and still mind blowing.

We have two of the most expensive ones plus an overmadrass to link them together and it is sleeping heaven compared to the cheaper one we had before

Definite yay for IKEA mattresses. Can't say more positives about the restful sleep from them. Have the Fjordgard and just bought the Edsele latex. The quality for the price can't be beat in my opinion.
