I read awhile back that Xenos is supposedly not VLIW-based. Considering the supposed inefficiency of VLIW5 once DX10 came out, I think it's plausible Nintendo came up with something of their own. Not guaranteed, just plausible.
Just like that it's plausible that IBM is making a custom PowerPC core for the next generation of consoles, I think it's also quite likely AMD is cooking some customized shader architecture for next gen as well. Perhaps similar to GCN but with some of the bulk removed.

Even if they're not, I don't expect the Wii U to have schoolbook VLIW4 or GCN implementation.

Well, the dev kit leaks we've had so far for both MS and Nintendo are using VLIW parts... what does that say? Possibly nothing. Possibly everything.

Dun dun dun. lol

^ It means MS' VLIW part is guaranteed to be 10x stronger than the one in Wii U. :p

The bold is fact since they've said as much. But yeah I can see there not being a "schoolbook" version of what AMD already has out there.

We know final-form hardware and all games are being saved for E3.

Nintendo tends not to release specs. Those leak out unofficially.

Price, date and OS tours tend to show up at "September Conferences" (Or January in the case of 3DS - think about 2 months prior to launch)

GDC announcements tend to be game announcements for already released hardware and service-related information (Netflix, Virtual console, etc)

I'm guessing a new Luigi's Mansion 2 trailer and some VC and lifestlye app announcements are our best bets.
Thanks for taking your time answering. Will be interesting in March.

Also, I am wondering another thing. I'm expecting a big fat 'no' as the answer.

Do you dudes think that there is a possibility for WU to upscale the Wii games to HD like Dolphin? Or is it simply impossible or too expensive?

Pretty much impossible. Each game would need its own emulator to do what Dolphin does and run them all at 100%.

There won't necessarily be GDC announcements if Iwata isn't giving the keynote. Though Nintendo could always hold a press event around the same time.

I feel sorry for Sakurai since he as so much pressure to out due Smash Bros Brawl and not on one but two platforms. I wonder if he'll go with an entirely new approach for the single player mode.

I'm surprised nobody's posted these target specs anywhere. I mean bits and pieces of it have been, like the CPU cache/number of cores and GPU embedded memory. But surely Nintendo gave an indication on other things like the number of SPU's, ROPs ect?

Right. That was Stevie's addition.

From what I know, nope. That's how in the dark devs seemed to be at the time and some of their comments after E3 indicated as much. Vigil is one that stuck out to me. If I summarized the target specs, they would like this.

3-core 2-way SMT PowerPC CPU w/3MB L2 cache
up to 1.5GB of memory (type not given I believe)
32MB eDRAM (capable of 720p w/ 4xMSAA or 1080p in a single pass)
part codenames

So any improvements over targets I would assume dealt with one of the first three lines as those seem to be the only tangible numbers they could make that kind of comparison with.

I just had to say that this 2 things sound super delicious. I already imagine tears of joy when Reggie will unveil the new Retro game at E3. Finally a console that can handle proper textures and show them with a great IQ.

Did I kill any possible buzz?

i hope retro is in charge of fleshing chase mii out into a full pack-in title along with several other demos from e3 last year. that way, we could get the good teams at ead working on stuff.

I'm hoping Retro is working on Starfox and that they blow us all away with it (the same way Rogue Leader did on Gamecube).

I also hope for Pikmin 3 at launch (or close to it) and the demo's from last E3 as some form of pack in. New Super Mario Bros Mii will probably be 'launch window' too. I think, given the 3DS launch window and Nintendo's reaction to it, that they'll be aiming for an 'awfully compelling' launch.

I'd love to see Nintendo expand Retro Studios to be sort of like what Rare was in the mid to late 90's. We got so many great games from them in a relatively short period of time.

They could do DKCR2, a new hardcore FPS title and a sequel and a new action game set in the Zelda universe all in the same generation. That sort of variety would be great.

I'm hoping we see a game from Retro that plays to their strengths; gameplay design and art design. Whatever genre fits that the best is what they should be aiming for.

Well, Retro has been doing quite a bit of hiring.
Though, whether that's just because of a big HD game or they're making two teams is hard to say.

Didn't find anything on GAF about this news so sorry if it was already posted: not a big deal but according to French website LiveWii, High Voltage Software (Conduit 2) is developping for Wii U. Probably The Grinding, switched from Wii to Wii U...

Just checked the official studio website and found this...

Right. That was Stevie's addition.

Yep, I surmised that IBM may have created a new chip (based on Power 7? who knows) for this upcoming generation of consoles and has sold it to multiple console makers.

Similar to the way they took the main core in the Cell, sold it to Microsoft in multiples of 3, and called it a day lol.

(i.e. Wii U has 3 of these cores, Xbox has 4 or 6 depending on the size of the box - who knows with Sony)

I think some of us are perhaps putting a bit too much faith into Retro Studios. They're clearly one of Nintendo's most valuable developers around, but we shouldn't start thinking that everything they do will turn to gold as that will just set one up for disappointment. Even Miyamoto, Aonuma, and Sakamoto have disappointed us in the past with some of their projects.

But it'll be pretty.

Don't bring logic and sensibility into this discussion.

Let's not go around pretending your opinions are a majority...

if anyone could do it, it'd be retro.

I don't even care if its a pipedream anymore, I'm expecting to be disappointed. even still, I'm going to hold on to the words miyamoto uttered about them and zelda in the same sentence.

Retro has what, one "revolutionary" game. Don't know why they'd be any more capable of bringing a revolution than EAD is.

This GAF obsession with Retro is by far one of the most annoying GAF obsessions of all time. And GAF goes through a lot of obsessions.

"hey retro should do this" "retro should do that" "kirby? get retro on it!" "donkey kong retrooo" "zelda + retro = DUHH" "star tropics retrooooo yeahhhhh" "I hope retro is working on it" "man that would be great for retro" "retro seems like the perfect fit" "hmmm I think retro should do this title" "if anyone can do it, it's retro"

Not saying it's completely unfounded, they are are obviously talented, but like, yeeeeshhhh.
