I wonder if MH has peaked. It'll be really tough to get those kinds of insane sales again.

Those Ace Combat sales are painful to see.

Will it reach 50k worldwide?

EDIT

And just noticed Famitsu has Vita doing even worse than M-C

Well, with discounts I suppose we could see some better numbers?
Probably in the long run, but it wont be much noticeable on the weekly charts. Price drops are extremely common in Japan, but not many games gets boosted in the weekly charts because of this.

No numbers, but they seem happy with their chart position at least;

Want to be big in Japan? Go digital

British publisher System 3 is making waves in Japan – by going digital.

The firm’s new Japanese office – headed by Takeshi Shimizu – launched Ferrari: The Race Experience late last year.

It was the publisher’s first release in Japan, it shot straight to No.2 in the PSN charts for December, and is still hanging around at No.4. That’s despite big name competition from Metal Gear, Daytona, King of Fighters and Metal Slug.

And the company believes digital networks like PSN are key to cracking the difficult Japanese market.

“2012 marks System 3’s 30th anniversary and you can’t get much better than our first Japanese release doing so well,” said System 3 boss Mark Cale.

“No other independent publisher has ever been able to move into a new territory and have such a success, so quickly. To do this you need to set up a Japanese company, and Takeshi Shimizu and his team have done us proud in making our entry into the marketplace so smooth.”

SCEE studio boss Michael Denny added: “PSN has proved to be a fantastic distribution channel. And the lower barriers for entry makes it a great way for developers and publishers to launch in new territories.”

Ace Combat is awesome in the worst ways possible. Probably, a combination of little advertising, the demo being playable only three times...and I don't know what else could have brought to such a big fail, to such a complete rejection from the userbase.

Don't know about the situation in Japan/US, but here in Europe Bamco are really trying their best to make sure their 3DS software doesn't sell. Ridge Racer 3D and Duel Pen Sports being the exception, but their other releases are rarely seen on storeshelves.

I can't imagine what will happen to poor Tales of Graces F in Euro land...

no, this is just the beginning.

Well, I'm sure if eventually Capcom keeps at it and goes the extra mile to ease new players in like Tri, it'll eventually do gangbusters worldwide. But Japan? 5 mil seems to be pretty much the ceiling on a single game's release... and like Guitar Hero I don't know if that's sustainable if Capcom keeps pushing out new versions. MH has the benefit of not being tied to a peripheral though (
even if CC Pro and CP Pro are favored heavily.
)

MH is going through the Capcom uber milkage phase and like any Capcom uber milked series it'll fall eventually.

And even i am moderately surprised
You know even a broken clock is right twice a day, right?

i don't think i'll be hitting twice a day any time soon.

plus would only work if it was just blanet predicting the same number for every game ;)

i think they'd have to do something stupid to feck it up - the whole secondary market is there and people are invested. It could and should be the next Pokemon style phenomenon really.

What is the point of this picture? One game listed as "this weeks ultra-sale" and about US $10 off. All other games at normal price. Congratulations? If you want to run the Vita further through the mud, I could give you some much better pictures.

Net sales and operating income in the Digital Entertainment segment totaled ¥53,701 million (an increase of 6.2% from the same period of the prior fiscal year) and ¥12,451 million (an increase of 11.6% from the same period of the prior fiscal year), respectively.

they didn't share any shipments this quarter, no FF13-2 or Type-0 for Japan.

They've been releasing annual sequels and expansions for a while now alongside a tonne of other spinoffs. I don't think Capcom has handled MH as carefully as Nintendo did for Pokemon. It will come back to bite them.

Well, i think they're doing ok - I think they still need to -really- screw up to lose the momentum really.

They've got their hooks into a whole range of people.

The question with Pokémon - for the main series - is whether you should talk in terms of individual titles, or in terms of *generations*. They may be releasing a lot of games, but a purchaser should be able to get a complete experience just by buying a single release each generation and trading (and maybe picking up a battle offshoot if they wish):

Generation 1: 1996-1999 [2004]

Generation 1: 1996
Generation 1 extra release: 1998
Generation 1 battle: 1999
[Generation 1 remake: 2004]

Generation 2: 1999-2000
Generation 2: 1999
Generation 2 extra release: 2000
Generation 2 battle: 2000

Generation 3: 2002-2004
Generation 3: 2002
Generation 3 battle: 2003
Generation 3 extra release: 2004

Three generations in six years is still a lot, I grant you (particularly when a generation's releases span a large timescale), but it doesn't strike me as *that* diabolical. If anything I'd say the big surprise is the lack of any spinoffs after there were a cluster around the N64 era. Although I suppose you could factor the Mini in to all this.

(All that said, I've only had a brief dalliance with Pokemon at the very start of its lifetime - do the 'extra releases' offer significant extra content over the originals, or just minor changes and a different monster selection? How do the remakes fit in with those?)

Well, then we can talk in terms of *generations* also for Monster Hunter.
Portable series was 2005-2007-2008 (2nd G)-2010. Wii episode was released in 2009. But Takao specifically talked about "expansions and spin-offs" and I cannot see Pokémon franchise exploited less than Monster Hunter in the first part of its history.

I would say we have 3 MH Generations right now, and the forth is about to begin with MH 4 on 3DS - yes it makes sense but the released a couple games per gen on handheld and consoles.

If anything the Vita is performing similarly to the Gamecube at this point.
Having seen the image of known Vita Famitsu software sales through these early weeks quite a bit, this made me wonder how GameCube compared early on.

Yeah, pretty similar. It's got the one relatively big title in Luigi's Mansion, but also a lot fewer titles hiding completely outside of the Top 30 lists.

No problem. Not sure when will there be another interesting week. Releases are a bit weak this month.

This week, I actually didn't pay attention, but there were 4 "interesting" releases: NeverDead, Ragnarok Odyssey, PhotoKano and SCV -- a fight for which can sell more than 50k.

Next week, there are 3 games: Gravity Rush, Sumioni and Suikoden something -- again a fight for which has less embarrassing sales, but it might worth a shot, if people are interested. There's still time.

Week 02-13: New Love Plus, Threathryrhethm, Binary Domain, Samurai Warriors 345 Z Special Milk it, Tekken 3D Hybrid -- a bunch of games, but all most likely under 100k.

Week 02-20: Naruto Generations, Idolmaster Vol. 5, Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus Extra, Harvest Moon etc. -- as usual a bunch of thing shoved on the last week of the month.

Most seem like a "let's see how badly those will bomb" kind of predictions (at least the PlayStation Family releases).

Just Dance LTD number is off btw.
You're right. I had to make some manual adjustments last week for MHP3rd Best and it was that number there instead of what should calculate the LTD automatically. Thanks!

You're right. I had to make some manual adjustments last week for MHP3rd Best and it was that number there instead of what should calculate the LTD automatically. Thanks!

You're welcome. I'd do the 13/2 week for sure it seems the most interesting prediction week by far.

That is a weird reappearance; I guess going down to 50 is really scraping to some low numbers. Its previous Best rerelease did decently, but decent in the sense of selling less than a thousand per week over a loooong time period.

What is the point of this picture? One game listed as "this weeks ultra-sale" and about US $10 off. All other games at normal price. Congratulations? If you want to run the Vita further through the mud, I could give you some much better pictures.

Seems like that's all some want to do with Vita :/

New promotional campaign or just another stealth release?

I noticed that days ago. It was planned from day one that in 2012, the gold wiimote and music CD will be gone, the 2011 versions being limited editions. Not sure about the bundle itself.
But the new 2012 versions will be, as planned, in colored box (not with the gold artwork). Makes sense the gold wiimote+ is gone.

What is really surprising, is that the music CD is still here. I think it should not be, but Nintendo may probably want to keep this incentive in the bundle.
