So, this thread isn't just for PC gamers? Thread title is misleading, if so.

Ass Creed 2 - X360
RDR + Undead Nightmare DLC - X360
Dead Space 2 - X360

Simpsons Arcade (on Friday) - XBLA

Finished in 2012:
Uncharted 3
Gears 3 RAAM's Shadow DLC

Currently Playing:
Mario Galaxy 1
Gears 3 MP
The Simpsons Arcade

Basically, my gaming strategy (for years now) has been that I play one SP and one MP game (usually only on weekends) at a time. So, currently Mario Galaxy (SP, obviously) and Gears 3 (MP), but with The Simpsons Arcade coming out on Friday, I'm going to be playing that nonstop until I get all the cheevos. Pure nostalgia purchase for me.

My short-term goal is to finish Mario Galaxy 1 before ME3 drops on March 6th. I have 38 stars currently, but I'm making great progress. Great game.

EDIT: I've finished a few games recently. I'm guessing it's OK to post my reviews here, right? I'll type them up here (later) to give my thoughts on them.

My definition of beating a game is earning all achievements and/or if that is impossible (for CAVE shmups, or if the game simply doesn't have achievements) reaching a level of completion that I'm personally satisfied with.

Almost finished Super Meat Boy last night. I'm on 6-5, so I guess I have 2 levels left to go, and will knock them out when I get home from work. Total time played is... I don't know. I took a year-long break 2/3 of the way through the game, and the sheer intensity of the game causes me to put the controller down for 10 minutes pretty regularly during play, so even if the game had a game clock, it wouldn't be accurate.

Much has been said about this game's difficulty. Some say it's hard, some say it isn't, and while some of that has to do with the skill of the player making the comments, I think some has to do with the design of the game and how the difficulty is presented.

On a micro level, meaning the moment-to-moment challenges presented to the player, this game can be, at times, extraordinarily difficult. Chaining together multiple precise moves at high speed is often required, and in some cases the margin for error is quite small. On a macro level, however, beating the game really isn't that hard. For one, the game's levels tend to be rather short, so while a lot may be asked of a player in a particular level, you really only have to hold it together for 20-30 seconds at most to complete the vast majority of them. Also at play is that for the first 5 worlds, you only have to finish 17 of the 20 levels to unlock the boss, so if you get stuck on a particularly nasty level, you can skip up to 3 levels per world (world 6 excepted) and still finish the base game.

I haven't got into the dark worlds at all, or the warp zones much (other than unlocking a few of them along the course of the campaign) but it seems like those offer an even greater challenge, and I'll probably come back and do some of them from time to time when I'm in the mood for a hand cramp.

Overall Rating (Unless the last 2 levels suuuck) - 4/5

This will put me at +6 for the year.

My backloggery, feel free to befriend me there :)

So if I understood well, only games bought in 2012 count against the score and any game beaten regardless of the time of purchase counts positively?

Bought in 2012: 5
Doom 3 (Mac), Dungeon Siege III (PS3), Aliens vs Predator (PS3), Final Fantasy VI (PSOne Classics), Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection (PSN) -> does this count? I've beaten all three games countless times during my life

Completed in 2012: 0

Current Score: -5

Currently Playing:
DOOM 3 (Mac)
Final Fantasy VI (PSOne Classics)

Bought in 2012: 2

Completed in 2012: 1
Skyrim

Current Score: -1

Currently Playing:
Dark Souls (X360)
Saints Row 3 (PC)
Zelda 3DS

3DS won't help with the backlog. But I'm determined no more game purchases until I beat Saints Row 3, OoT 3D, or Dark Souls.

That is, until ME3 comes out.

I mentioned this in another thread, but Red Faction: Armageddon has to be one of the most underrated games of last year. The magnet gun is by far my favorite weapon in the game and has to be one of the best weapon ideas since the gravity gun on HL2. Plus you get a modern take on Descent as an added bonus.

Banjo-Tooie haunted me for many years because it was one of only two N64 games I owned that I never got around to finishing. Just started playing the XBLA version out of the blue last Sunday, and kept it up through the week. The back half of the game is very weak, though. Also finished NBA Jam off - I enjoyed it for what it is.

Resident Evil: Revelations is the only thing coming in on the new release front that I've ordered. I think I'll leave playing it until I've knocked over Zero and Code Veronica X, which both seem to keep getting bumped in favour of other games.

Currently Playing:
Okami (PS2): Didn't get any time with it this week.
X-Men Legends (Xbox): Wanted a change of pace. This is arguably the weakest of these games, but it's still pretty good.

Beaten Reviews:

Dead Space 2 (4/5) - This review should be prefaced by the fact that I dislike the horror genre with a passion. I was attracted to this game after a buddy convinced me to try it and after and hour and a half I was disappointed by constant suspense and what I felt was a lack of action. After picking it up the other week I realized that what I hated the first time was really the beauty in the game. I played for and hour or so and was hooked. The feeling of tension that this game creates is on a whole other level from other games I have played. Every corner you feel forced to check left and right -- with that visibility you have -- to avoid being snuck up on by a zombie. Hearing a something in the walls and just knowing that something is coming and tensing up on the edge of the couch to just find yourself at a save station is probably the quickest jump in my suspense that I have ever felt in a game. Overall I think this games ability to draw you in with the suspense is what made this a great game. I will say this though: dying was more frustrating than a set back, and the save stations seemed useless and too frequent. I don't really mind the latter, but dying felt like "shit I have to go blow through this section again" rather than "Okay shit, how I am going to beat these guys". I didn't really understand a lot of the story going through the game either; it was only the end when everything was put before you that I understood what was going on. Ultimately, I am pleased I picked it up, and I would recommend it to most everyone.

Now to actually make some time for games (in the last couple weeks I played a couple Steam demos, played more Rage co-op, a bit of Fruit Ninja Kinect... and that's it).

Beat Golden Sun: Dark Dawn, 21h 43m. Decent game, but I don't think I'll be going back to do the post game content. The later game dungeon puzzles were the highlight for me. Story was pretty forgettable with way too much dialogue. Battle system seemed decent enough, except most enemies and bosses were too easy. Only the final boss put up a good fight.

Just finished Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II: Retribution. Total playtime was in the neighborhood of 7-8 hours for one playthrough of the campaign. The game has multiple factions, so if you wanted to play them all, it would take substantially longer to complete, obviously. I might go back and do an Ork playthrough at some point for comedic relief, but from what I understand, the 6(?) campaigns are all basically the same as one another, except for dialog and cutscenes.

Unlike the original Dawn of War 2 and Chaos Rising, the campaign here has you controlling more than just 4 squads at a time. You have your 4 base "hero" units, and in addition to them, you can spend resources gathered during each mission to buy more units at designated rally points. It also costs resources to reinforce your squads (although my Imperial Guard commander hero had a Energy-based power which could call in reinforcements as well. I'm not sure if the other factions have a similar power.)

By the end of some of the missions, you can end up with 10 or more squads under your control, which detracted from the focused nature of the Dawn of War 2 games to this point. It's not necessarily a bad system, but it certainly made the missions feel a little more like a zergfest than they had in the previous entries. This is most evident in the final boss battle, where you get a factory right next to the final boss, and you get a constant stream of resources. This makes the final boss a simple battle of attrition where you summon swarm after swarm of troops and throw them against boss to die until finally you whittle his health down enough to get to the ending.

Overall, it's still a good game, but it certainly didn't keep me engaged like DOW2 and Chaos Rising did.

Overall Score - 3/5

That puts me at +7 for the year. 4 bought :11 finished

Update:

Finished Zelda Spirit Tracks and Serious Sam HD First Encounter.

Zelda: I thought it was an ok Zelda title, I felt like it took too long to get anywhere with the train and the warp points were so far away I felt that they were pointless because it didn't really make travelling faster, if you could play a warp song with the pipe from the train to warp to those points, that would have been much better. Also felt the last dungeon went on for too long, back tracking between floors making sure Zelda had the right phantom type got annoying. Last boss fight was done well (except for the music section, I could never get those right for some reason, the system wouldn't register me blowing into the mic, it got irritating and I was dreading those parts coming up because the notes got longer as the game went on).

Serious Sam HD: Great FPS, I never played the Serious Sam series when they were released despite playing all the other main "old school" FPS titles in those times. Everything worked great, the guns were ridiculous, you had gibs and boss fights every now and then, whole game was fast paced. Kinda makes me sad how most FPS games now are all slow and boring.

Updated: Finished Ghost Trick last night. This game completely sucked me in, pretty much like I knew it would. As a fan of Ace Attorney, Prof Layton, Hotel Dusk, 999, etc this game was a sure thing for me. Had I gotten around to playing it during 2011 it probably would have been my GOTY. Amazing game, if you loved any of the other games I mentioned you should play this. $10 on iOS is an absolute steal.

Went backwards a bit. After the THQ pity party threads this week, I decided to pick up a couple of their games. De Blob 2 and Warhammer 40K: Space Marine. While I was on Amazon, I also picked up a couple sub-$10 games I've had an interest in for a while now - Enslaved:Odyssey to the West and Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom.

That puts me at -2 for February and +3 for the year.

So I bought my first game for the year. Pixeljunk Eden (awesome!).

Not sure if I should count it as a backlog game though. I haven´t beaten it yet, it is beatable, and I´m really enjoying it. But I´m playing it just to enjoy myself, and not to reach any end credits or so. I just want to fool around in the game and enjoy the graphics and the fantastic soundtrack.

How would you do?

Completed Games List

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary (Xbox 360)
Some things are probably better left as memories. I was content with my nostalgia. And then, well, Halo Anniversary happened. The game relies too much on corridors. There were frequent slowdowns, to the point where it became almost unbearable. There were too many enemy waves and simply not enough diversity to sustain the game. The enemy AI and weapons are all still fantastic, and the graphical update was nice, but not enough to really pull me in the way that it did when I first played the original. I suppose that is always the risk with faithful remakes such as this, but there you have it.

The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii)
Twilight Princess is easily my favourite Zelda, even above Skyward Sword, which I am more than disappointed in. The graphics have aged somewhat since release, and the art style sometimes suffers from a bit of an identity crisis, but the world is cohesive, the dungeons are excellently designed and the world is crammed with things to do and see in between them. Twilight Princess manages to weave a pretty good story in between all of the Zelda-ing, and introduces the best companion character since Tatl and Ezlo. It is definitely my hope that the Zelda team try to achieve what this game set out to do on Nintendo's next console.

Mighty Switch Force (3DS eShop)
Mighty Switch Force's puzzle platforming simply doesn't last long enough. The graphics and soundtrack are amazing, and the 3D usage is employed to great effect, much like Pushmo. The puzzles are relatively clever, though most can be completed by winging it through the level. Playtime can be extended by trying to achieve the target completion time, but ultimately there is not a lot of meat to the game.

Rayman Origins (PS3)
I was almost getting tired of co-op platformers. LBP, NSMBWii, DKCR and Kirby Wii are all great games, but each have their downfalls. And then Origins comes along, and doesnt suffer from any of the problems the above do. It isnt floaty. It doesnt have a boring art style. It doesnt incorporate fiddly controls. And it is definitely not too easy. The game is genuinely hilarious, doubly so if played with friends. It has an infectious soundtrack, beautiful graphics and tight level design. If you are a fan of any of the above, you owe it to yourself to play this. Especially since the asking price has decreased to such criminal levels.

Originally not on my planning, but I wanted a break from Diablo, so I installed this quicky.
Played through with Developer Commentary. Apparently, this means you're invulnerable. Anyway, it was nice and some very interesting commentary points. Especially the comparisons they do are very nice.

I have a backlog long enough that I can honestly say I will never catch up. However I will give this a shot, if for no other reason than to help convince myself to actually finish some games and spend less cash.

Bought in 2012: 2
Halo: CE (360)
Halo Reach (360)

Finished in 2012: 0

So I start off at -2.

I don't know if I'd call any of them skippable, but Vanquish and Bastion are really short.

Speaking of which, I should knock Bastion out of my backlog...

I don't really understand why you'd have to skip anything. You already own the games, right? Just play them when you have the time.

The time to skip games is before you buy them

Update: Just finished Red Dead Redemption tonight. This was probably my favorite Rockstar game to date. The story had some pacing problems where certain parts got dragged out way longer than they had to, but I can forgive all that in the end. Unfortunately, I accidentally read a rather significant spoiler about the game back before I even started playing it... that was kind of a bummer. Still, even with some crazy technical glitches and random freeze-ups I loved the game quite a bit. Great story, great characters, beautiful game.
