Twisted Metal Demo Impressions

1. Use shield

2. Use freeze

3. Always have chainsaw ignited

4. Don't bother freezing Darkside

5. Try to force 1v1 encounters, don't be afraid to run from multiple enemies

6. Screw all that and play as Darkside and tear stuff up!!!

Lol just kidding......but seriously Darkside is a blast to ram stuff with, and dat Tri-Gun!?!?!?

No Darkside for me...My controller of choice doesn't have sixaxis for turbo dash, and playing a game that requires as much vigorous button pressing as TM on a dualshock makes my hands cramp up after a couple of games.

Need an option to map the turbo dash to buttons. Maybe L3 while accelerating (TM Classic)?

I really like this game, but why does the singleplayer AI have to gank up on you. One of the unique aspect of this game is the chaos of a open arena where every man is fighting for himself. The joy of seeing two or three fighting each other while you fire rockets from a safe distance, that is until the fifth is sneaking up on you.

Online doesn't work for me.

Let's just hope the game plays out like it should, because at it's core, it's blazingly fun.

You actually think the phrase is "ganked up on"?

This. Darkeside is too huge and slow to miss. And always freeze talons in the sky before they get you. Talons, crimson furies, and other reapers are one hit kills with flame chainsaw.

ROFL. I just had the best ending to a match. I was playing Talon and this other guy was playing Reaper. We were both really good, usually coming in 1st or 2nd. I was in 1st place, the match was counting down to end, and he was like within 100 of my score. I shot him down to less than half health and then, as the counter was almost down, I swooped in and point blanked him with a shotgun at the exact same time he killed me with a flaming chainsaw. Double KO and I still won :D

I love this game.

Most likely =) but it may delay a bit by one day, hope you all dont mind.

No. I'm suing. Just kidding.

Oh and those worried about David and his future he tweeted about it.

The rumors of me making casual games post TM- as many of you define them- are highly exaggerated.

So see nothing to worry about folks.

Unboxing vid thanks to BloodRed87 from tma.

It's got add-on content on the back wonder what that could be? Also only a 6mb install Woot!

Edit: looks like a reversible cover too.

Would have been a great video had the guy kept his mouth shut. Talk about annoying as all hell. Besides saying cool or nice every 5 seconds he acts like he's 12 wanting to pinch Dollface's titty.

What's interesting is noting the differences between missile strike locations in Nuke mode. I notice that the clowns usually aim for Dollface's tits, or her head. Occasionally you get a dood who aims for the "genital triangle."

Dolls usually aim for the head or Sweet Tooth's popsicle. I'm going to try to pilot the missile up his dookey chute next time I get in.

As for Jaffe's career - he hinted at having an idea for the F2P market in that Wired LiveCast (the one where he said GAF was like the Catina in Star Wars.) Sounds like he wants to make a narrative-based game that plays out during gameplay (as opposed to cut scenes) ala DarkSiders. I think the F2P thing is where people are getting the whole "casual game" thing. We'll see how it turns out.

I thought ESP has a 3 game deal with Sony? I really can't see them just doing mobile games from now on. I want a new IP from the studio on PS3.

Well I think in the long term ESP as well as David Jaffe should take a break from Twisted Metal and work on a new title/game. I say this because I know with David he seems to want to work on a game and then want to do something new afterwards. If Twisted Metal is successful and if there is a demand for a sequel. Then by the time they finish a different title, ESP will have a fresh bill of health so to speak to start up the possible Twisted Metal sequel.

I am not a developer by any means, but I could imagine getting burnt out working on a Game for 2-3 years then working on the sequel for the same game for another 2-3 years. You would be in danger of exhausting yourself of coming up with new ideas for the franchise. So basically if Twisted Metal is successful. I would put my money on ESP making a sequel. It may take longer than expected for it to come out. But as long as the Twisted Metal series stays alive that's good enough for me.

Don't know the price but importing will cause more issues like creating a US account to redeem the online pass, not being able to play on my ID and of course the off-chance there is DLC I have to buy a US pre-paid card. I really don't mind the wait. It's the cuts that annoy me but Jaffe said it wont be as bad as TMB so hopefully he is right...

You can. Online passes activate the account and the console used to redeem to code, so you can play online with any account that you have on your console.

So I get into a multiplayer game for the first time last night, excited, not sure what to expect but I've been playing challenge a lot so I feel confident.

Round 1 I get first place, Round 2 starts and I'm in third, not happy about that so I spend a bit of time head hunting the 1st/2nd place guys. Eventually I get to 2nd place and am 1 kill away from getting 1st, chasing him down and getting his health to red. One more missle and he's done for.

Then the game freezes... =/

I'm getting the game but if I was just trying it out that would've been a deal breaker. The rage was relentless. Really so much fun though and I can't wait to try out the other modes I've only done deathmatch I want to try nuke tonight.

Excuse me while I drool. Really though, that sound like the best combination ever. The next gen Twisted Metal experience in your hands.

That would be damn cool. That's for sure. Twisted Metal is a franchise that is perfect for a handheld. Hell TMHO was a prime example of a good quick handheld fix. Borrowed a friends PSP a couple times just to play it.

Oh man there have been conspiracy theories spouted off to explain jaffe's departure. All of them blame sony and think something is wrong withen sony. ESP is not even part of sony.

Either it's been years since I have played Twisted Metal or I just really suck against the AI. Ok...both are true but still the fun factor is definitely there. I need to "re-learn" all the vehicles and their weapons (a booklet would be nice) but it is definitely fun. I have only had the chance to play as meat wagon for now but I will have more time in the evenings and plan to play the hell out of the demo.

I know yesterday and the day before I was getting it maybe 1 outta every 3 to 5 times. But it would be once and that was it. The next try it would let me in. So it's improving for sure.

The Fucking MAN.
Oh man there have been conspiracy theories spouted off to explain jaffe's departure. All of them blame sony and think something is wrong withen sony. ESP is not even part of sony.

No conspiracy theories. To my NEOGAF family and friends, some details:

1- Me, Scott, and the core ESP team are STILL on TM crunching bugs, working on balance, POURING over message boards (including this one) for likes/dislikes for us to put into future TM patches, and making numerical vehicle and weapons tweaks. And ALL of us will be doing so at least untill end of March and then SOME of us will be doing it most likely a bit beyond (and you KNOW even once I officially leave, I'll be playing the game daily and sending ESP and Sony my notes and desires...I'm one of TM's dad's- no WAY I'm abandoning this kid!)

And it is our kid! This is our baby, we are passionate about it, we LOVE the great demo response (save for the shitty matchmaking issues that I am promised will NOT be on the retail game and will even improve for the demo potentially as early as today). We have no intention of abandoning Twisted Metal. I still work for ESP and will continue to do so up until end of March.

2- DLC- I've been saying for near over a year there are no DLC plans unless the game is a big hit. Trust me- if the game is a big hit, do you think Sony would NOT go to ESP and say 'DLC- stat!'? But right now- as I've been saying- no DLC plans. I've lied to you guys only once and that was for entertainment (i.e. E3 Surprise)...no other time. Including all the times I've been saying NO DLC. But again, if it's a huge hit, it still remains a possibility for sure.

3- Layoffs suck. Breaks out heart to no longer be working with some of our colleagues and friends. It was sad for me and triply sad for Scott as he worked with this crew for a long time and saw them every day, face to face. It has to suck for them- and my hearts and thoughts and well wishes for a smooth, soft landing are with all of the folks we had to let go.

4- I remain a passionate fan of Sony and Sony Playstation and am eternally grateful to them for the wonderful career I've had so far. They have given me - professionally and personally- SO MUCH and if the games our new company make are fortunate enough to have a PUBLISHED BY Sony logo on them, I'd consider it an honor.

5- But no decisions have been made as ALL of my focus (and Scott and the team's as well) is Twisted Metal. Again, the wonderful love the demo has gotten on this site has us fucking OVER THE MOON. You have no idea! Cause look: some of the folks- on this very site- who say stuff like 'Jaffe is not a next-gen designer', well that shit hurts, man, because all we can do is the best we can and follow our own internal GPS and gut, and Twisted Metal on PS3 represents the BEST game- in our minds- we've EVER made and it's sure as fuck relevant to US and we just LOVE it!

So the fact that it seems there are a nice size crew out there who played the demo and also seem to be feeling the same? Man, just makes our day. And as I've said in the press, if it sells 2000 copies or 2 million, we got to make a big budget, full featured game that we love and that we want to play. And we have Sony to thank for that. And if being 'relevant' in the console space in 2012 means you have to fall in line and just make flavor of the year style games (or even make totally original games that are NOT appealing to us, the folks who are making them) then, yeah, perhaps I am no longer relevant cause I would not want to live a creative life like that and I would not want to model such soul crushing behavior for my kids.

6- No conspiracies why I'm leaving once TM duties wrap (again, that is NOT today or next week...we are STILL working on our baby and will be doing so post launch)- I just want to get back to doing development internally as games are more complex and it's just getting too hard to direct and/or co-direct from a remote location. I also miss the energy of being with a crew and making something day in/day out together. No conspiracy- I just was not getting that with ESP because of location. Also: Scott's been wanting to do iphone and ipad style stuff for a looooong time and I think once ESP begins small game dev (and again, to beat a dead horse- we are ALL STILL ON TM! :), the mobile/pad games they make are gonna be amazing! They have my sword, and my axe, and all my love and support moving forward.

Ok- tons to do- but I wanted to clear that shite up! Thx ya'll- and looking forward to seeing a lot of you guys/gals online with TM next week! :)

David

Jaffe, if last-gen means gameplay over meta-gameplay, then let us celebrate last-gen!

This meta gameplay where people play because they want to improve their Battlelog progress bars as opposed to pure mastery of the game itself is a horrible trend in multiplayer games right now.

Edit: Oh and what about worldwide matchmaking? I've been hovering over the pre-order copy to import the game from the US as I can't wait... But if I can't play with PAL dudes that's going to suck in the future. ;-)

I actually got into a Nuke match last night on my 2nd try. It was pretty damn fun. Quite solid, not laggy. I even did pretty well, though I was terrible at the mode itself. I launched one missile that got shot down. This game is really growing on me though.

Rest snipped for length

And there you have it folks. Word from the man himself. I also damn well agree David. I as a gamer get so damn tired of seeing so many games that just look and play the same. It's gotten so bad that you see franchises that were nice and unique even start to morph and change to match the "flavor of the year" as you put it. Thankfully you see a few exceptions thanks to guys like you thank god.

Same but what I like is especially with the classic controls it feels like Twisted Metal of old but looks like Twisted Metal of new. Day 1 purchase already considering how much I miss TM of old :(

Ok, but Jaffe, why announce that you were leaving ESP today on the eve of the games release?

Why not wait till the game was atleast released a little while?

"as I've been saying- no DLC plans. "

So then why does the box clearly state "Add-on Content"?
TMB and Axel aren't technically add-on? Axel has to be unlocked via PSN store. And the game has the potential to support more add-on content even if more never gets made so it's still a feature.

No, they are not add-ons. One is a separate game and one is already in game, just unlocked early via a code.

hmmm is he not telling us about dlc cooking on the stove. That would be in bad taste advertising for something not there.

Oh well I'm knit picking, love the demo. GOTY imo. Hope to see the game sell well and Sony pull the pin on some "add-on content"

Really appreciate Jaffe's candor in this whole situation.

Definitely interested in playing TM at some point here in the near future.

Jaffe wasn't sure if Axel is on the disc or not. Either way, you cannot unlock Axel AT ALL without add-on. You have to download him off the store no matter how you get him.

huh, 1st he's an unlock in game, pre-orders just get access to him day 1... like Battle Field games do. Then I hear he's unlocked to everyone a month later. Now the creator has no clue. Still don't agree an unlock code falls under "add-on content". You can't possible download the data for alex without every gamer having the same data/client. I think you are mistaken understanding what DLC (disc locked content ;) ) is.

The skins you can upload and download can be considered as add-on content. I'm pretty sure it's that.

Dude. When Axel becomes available for people who didn't get him for preorder where will he be on the PSN store? Add-on section.

I don't think Sony cares whether it's on the disc or not. If they send consumers to the add on section of PSN store to get it they're going to call it an add-on even if it's just an unlock code.

My brother just said that Twisted Metal PS3 is a shit rip-off of Vigilante 8, while waiting for Sniper: Ghost Warrior to load up for him to contrinue his second playthrough. Odd, to say the least
