Twisted Metal Demo Impressions

Just shoot either of the giant satellite dishes and it'll form a ramp to get up to the hill. There's going to be a lot of stuff like this throughout the levels, you're going to see a faction leader is some unreachable place and you'll have to figure out what to blow up to help you get there.

And yes, training mode takes place in Watkins Harbour, kind of neat just to explore but unfortunately you can't play there with AI or real people until the full game.

Thanks people. I was just confused about Watkyns Harbour, because when I did the training mode when the demo first came out, it put me in the multiplayer map.

Still, it's a pleasant surprise :)

My copy is currently on its way to Eire.

Does anyone know what PlanetAxel's shipping protocols are. Their website says it would go to Royal Mail and then out. Obviously this is odd, as I live in Ireland...

I have never played a Twisted Metal game before, so I decided to download the demo yesterday. I have to be honest here, I was a bit skeptical about this game. This is unexplored territory for me as I never really got into car combat games. So it came as a shock to me to see how much fun I had.

Twisted Metal seems to be one of those rare games where a player with little experience involving video games, can instantly dive in and have a load of fun without having to worry about the rules and mechanics.

I played it with a couple of my college friends who also have never played Twisted Metal, and we had a blast passing the controller and seeing who could score more points. I have been looking for a game with good local multiplayer recently, so this will fill that niche nicely.

Thanks Jaffe/EatSleepPlay this just went to a day 1 buy. Absolutely can't wait for next week.

best time- 4m35s, meat wagon.
Nice. I'm not particularly good with meat wagon, it'd take me awhile to beat it with him.

Couldn't manage to connect with a server this morning so I played a round of challenge mode with Crimson Fury and beat it 4m12s without using any exploits or sniper rifles, probably could of done it faster (wasn't really aiming for anything). Though what I liked most about it is I only took 111.6 damage. IIRC Crimson Fury has 110.0 hit points, so I think if I put a little more effort into it I can beat it without any form of health pick ups.

Well I think Sony really doesn't make a big effort to advertise their games. There could very well be a large group of people burnt out on the 3rd person/First Person genre and might want something fresh with a different pace. Twisted Metal 1&2 as well as Black sold well. I would hope this Twisted Metal would do equal or even better.

I do have a feeling that Twisted Metal "might" be a sleeper hit. Like Dead Space or Borderlands. A game that wasn't given a lot of attention but turned out really well and worth the money/time of the consumer.

The mutliplayer demo is so damn addicting and its just one map with 7 vehicles to choose from. Imagine how addicting the full package will be. I have done my part to try and spread the word amongst my PSN friends list. So far I have a few I have convinced to check it out.

Sony's ads suck. It'll be a mistake to slap a Kevin Butler ad onto a Twisted Metal game and make a joke out of it. They need to give us a dedicated advertisement for Twisted Metal, but these guys don't exactly have the deepest pockets atm

When the telescope is destroyed it will fall down on the side with the hospital+casino.

That broken telescope will then make a ramp up the hill and you can get up there. I don't know if the same is true for the other side.

Telescopes? Casinos? Do you work for Gamespot? :p

You can get up there by destroying the satellite dishes. If you play as a fast enough car like Crimson Fury and hit the cliff at the right spot/angle you can get up there without destroying them. They take a ton of damage to destroy. By the time you take them down you'll suffer a lot of damage or a dumbass Talon player will have grabbed the leader.

Don't like double tap Square? Or you mean the super turbo?
It's called turbo dash. Regular turbo is just called turbo.

I hate when I'm on my way across the hills, up the hospital, or up the school with a Crimson Fury or Death Warrant ready to pick up the faction leader only to have a stupid Talon player swoop in right before me. Hopefully eventually all Talon players will learn their role in Nuke.

In the full game the number of Talons allowed will be limited. So if people waste them early then you won't have them the entire rest of the game.

Hey I ran into you the other day. Helscream same name on PSN?

In all honesty you are the best player I have run into randomly since demo launched. Most people are pretty mindless but you had a head on ur shoulders.

My PSN is MyAbsolution and was the bastardo Darkside/Meat Wagon. Sorry about trolling you with Reaper that one match, i was bored after 4 games and just decided to go after you with flaming chainsaws only for hunting practice :p. My buddy and I were in same room (ynoT TMA) so thats why we stuck around so long.

Yea I remember you. As well as ynoT_TMA. I figured that meant Twisted Metal Alliance. Yea at first I wanted to try out Reaper in a Deathmatch. You really have to play hit and run with that vehicle. Because if you get caught in the crossfire your toast. I normally use either Reaper, Outlaw, or Darkside.

I know the game is still in its infancy so a lot of people are still figuring out how everything works. I am just trying to get in as much practice as I can before the game hits.

Feel free to send me a friend invitation on PSN. I have the PS3 Wireless Stereo Headset so I have a working microphone.

I plan on mastering Juggernaut and learning to use him appropriately in team based modes. Most people like to use the bigger vehicles just for the power trip and rarely know how to utilized those bigger vehicles to help our their team mates, neither do they take the time to learn how to master the maneuvering of such a heavy vehicle.

With you and your friend as well as other players from NeoGaf I am sure we will have some sick teamwork when the game hits.

They are just huge targets for reapers to instakill.

I was playing the demo and all of a sudden I got kicked out and sent to the PS3 XMB. I try to start up the demo again and I get "The content has expired and is no longer available. (8002951B)" :(

They kept taking them from city hall, the mansion, the hospital, and the high school right when I got there as crimson fury. So annoying. Then our team couldnt score cuz the leaders were constantly being dragged for the whole round. And when I finally got a nuke, did they help escort me or my nuke? No. Did they take down enemy nukes? No. I actually shot down a nuke with my flamethrower.

I'm thinking of picking a PS3 up so I can play this game with my dad. We enjoyed the old Twisted Metal and Vigilante 8 games on our PS1 (TMB on PS2) :)

A fun tid bit, nukes can kill enemies. And actually if you hit them but don't crash into anything else your Nuke will be fine (try steering into a Talon). One round I was trying to sacrifice and had an enemy attacking me when a friendly Nuke crashed right into him! Very awesome. I suppose if you realize there's no way you're going to make it to the statue might as well make use with what you have.

For me that's a telescope, as a satellite is something in orbit.
Casino on the other hand I don't know how I got that idea. It's probably because I've played the game for 5 hours and have only been in the actual rooms with seats twice.

I'm interested in the map variant where everything happens inside the cinema. :p

Satellites are in space. Satellite dishes communicate with satellites. They could be radio telescopes, but they are usually called dishes, antennas, or arrays because most people associate telescopes only with optical telescopes.

Well they got the day 1 patch the other day and that was required or at least asked of them to download it before reviewing it. Odds are there is an embargo too. My money would say a day or two before release. That would be guess.

Hmm... interesting. I never would have tried this. Going to have to check it out if the demo will run tonight.

I had no idea this was a timed demo. That's kinda crappy but I do want to play more so maybe they did their job.

Im guessing they want the game to fail. Release broken demo that takes a while to fix and then just as its fixed kill the demo before people can experience the game working.

Yes I am cynical.

I don't think it's that. Twisted Metal has never really gotten the full backing of Sony marketing wise. Also I have a feeling that this was a mistake on Sony's part. My money says that it was the automated system that pulled the demo and that they forgot to extend it in the system. Now the question is how fast will Sony correct this screw up if at all. They may just say fuck it and keep it down.

Yea. Seems that Sony assured him they would extend it till Sunday and then pulled the plug anyway.
I feel kind of bad for Jaffe because he's already having people question the credibility of his statements because of the TM announcement denial. This is the last thing he needs.

I think they won't correct it. DRM fucked everything up again, as the demo was time locked.

Which means this marvelous technology that usually is used to lock customers out of content is now in ironic event locking the creator of the content out of more people trying to see that the game is actually very fun.

I should also mention I was being sarcastic (somewhat). The psn store booting people out was probably a preprogrammed part of the demo. The apathy of sony's handling of TM3 doesnt help.

This game was already flying under the radar but a bad demo is the last thing this game needed.

Yeah, it seems the nuke itself can instakill talons and keep on truckin' without damage. Found that out on accident. Pretty sure the talon user did too.

Too bad about this whole demo fiasco right before release. Besides, why the hell would they take the WHOLE demo off the PS Store, and not just disable the demo's online servers so people can play the single player?

Sonys entire marketing team needs to be fired. I mean their releasing a new system in 3 weeks and didn't even run a Superbowl ad? Holy fuck. It's like they don't even give a shit.

Their marketing team is iffy, but that's a poor example as to why it's iffy. I think the Dante's Inferno ad is the only time that a game company has bought ad space during a Super Bowl.

Oh, Twisted Metal 3. You were the worst christmas present I ever asked for. Isn't it funny how, after all these years, the legacy of 989, San Diego Studios, is releasing a sequel to Modnation Racers on Vita without online multiplayer? It's where games go to die.

Sony are playing the long game with PSV, as they should. It's too expensive for the average person to care, the library isn't there, and they aren't going to ship that many. They need to keep it viable by 'the core' audience for a couple of years, till they can get the price down, then push marketing harder.

As long as they go for this high end tech, they're always going to enter the market at an undesirable price.

The Superbowl is not their core audience. Sure a good chunk of their core audience watches the Superbowl, but they can reach that same audience minus all the extra people for a considerably cheaper cost. I can't think of any gaming industry ad during a Superbowl save for Dante's Inferno

That's because most consoles don't release in February. For ~$2-3 million dollars they could have reached millions of people. Fucking ridiculous that they didn't run in ad.
