As good as mgs3 was, it's the only mgs I finished only twice (compared to my 20+ playtroughs of mgs2). Maybe it was the fact that it wasn't 60fps? Or that it started turning into a manga from this point? MGS2 is a timeless masterpiece, fuck the fanbase for turning a ballsy developer into a fanservice whore. I don't think I will ever like a mgs again because of the direction the franchise has taken now :(

I have a theory that Murata is part of the reason why the series took this turn,. The style/tone of the series seemed to shift from here on out. He wrote ZOE2 and co-wrote MGS3.

Does anyone have a gif of the totally bro'd out handshake Snake and Otacon do in MGS2? I loved observing Snake and Otacon's friendship from Raiden's perspective.

I was hoping they'd do it again in MGS4, but if IIRC they didn't.

I was gonna say that this thread needed more Twin Snakes GIFs for lulz, actually. There was a GAF thread a long time ago with pretty much every ridiculous Snake moment from TS, but I can't find it anymore.

1. MGS2; played through this game 10+ times, just love it, perfect boss fights
and I liked Raiden
2. MGS3; loved this game as well, didn't play as many times as MGS2, incredible boss fights, countless hours of fun
3. MGS1; because I don't want to give MGS4 a single point, in fact if possible I would even give it negative points. Never played PW/PO yet, so this was my only choice

I remember the first time playing this section and being blown away by the blood, seeing it gush as you sliced the enemy with Raiden's sword.
The controls for the sword were brilliant too. MGS2 is a true masterpiece. One of the best games ever made.

1. MGS3; WHAT A THRILL~

2. MGS4; The story was bonkers, but it gave rise to some really fun set-pieces. I really wish they would patch out the install times and patch in trophies, though.

3. MGS2; Also pretty bonkers! I consider it the last and best "soliton-radar" Metal Gear before the "camo-index" post-MGS3 games.

I've only played Twin Snakes, which (as I understand it) is too different from the original. Peace Walker is also good, but I had a hard time getting immersed in the PSP version. The HD port might sway my opinion. Portable Ops is sort of clunky and uninspired, but was fun at the time.

1. MGS3 Easily the best story in the series. Everyone already knows how great that ending is, so I won't go on about it, but everything else leading up to that point was amazing too. I really loved the camo and survival elements introduced. Plus The End battle blew my fucking mind at the time.
2. MGS4 This would easily be number 1 based controls and gameplay and level design, but the story is too much of a mixed bag to put it above Snake Eater. I liked a lot of it, even most of it, but it was way too convoluted for its own good, and that neverending final cutscene should have stopped with Snake shooting himself.
3. MGS Probably has the most memorable levels/locations. Plus Psycho Mantis was craaazy.

4. MGS:pW
5. MGS2
6. MGS:pO

1. MGS3
2. MGS1
3. MGS2

MGS3 feels the most like a "complete" game to me out of the three, and there are a lot of options and areas. Story is boring but mostly inoffensive.

MGS1, I like the setting. The gameplay is simple if a little clunky. It feels very short however. Unfortunately I have more experience with Twin Snakes than the PSX original :(

MGS2 is way too damn easy with a tranq gun, though sometimes I try to not use it. This way at least a few rooms are a good challenge. Never played the Substenance version though. It is also painfully short, like MGS1 before it.

Even though I've played most of the MG's, besides the PSP ones, I felt like never really "got" into them. I need to pick up the HD collection sometime and go for a total pacifist, no tranq run.

I think the boss battles are what put 3 above the others. I remember just reloading my save before the sniper boss over and over again trying different stuff against him. Only thing I didnt like was the survival stuff you had to do but it didn't affect my enjoyment all that much.

1. MGS2 ; everything about it blow me away at that time, The music, graphics, boss fights, multiple ways to tackle each encounter, and crazy story were all top notch. I probably played the demo for more than 30 hours alone. Its actually the only game that I played through multiple times during one week. One minor issue, the ending was a convoluted BS but the final boss fight was great. I haven't played it since and I'll probably not like it as much as my 14 years old self. :p

2. MGS1 ; first game I've ever played that really gave me the feeling of playing a movie, mainly because of the strong story aspects, voice acting, and cut scenes. The game was simple to get into gameplay-wise and made me a fan of stealth games. It was a new experience for me although English isn't my native tongue(No English education in Elementary only middle school), I had tons of fun playing and learning English at the same time (using a dictionary while playing). This game had a huge influence on my life, it made me not afraid to tackle other heavy text games like RPGs and such which actually made me excel in my English studies.

3. MGS3 ; Like everyone else i was shocked when i learned about MGS3 settings and thought that it'll be awful but Kojima and Co delivered the best story in the MGS franchise and one of my favorite of all time. The Boss and Big Boss are excellent characters with an amazing relationship and the game had some of the best boss fights in games ever. The gameplay was the weakest for me because of the constant menu management, healing, eating, and bad camera (never played the subsistence ver.)

1. MGS1 - brilliant, amazing, incredible, close to perfect.
2. MGS4 - does a very good job at cleaning the mess that MGS2 created. very complex of a story...way too convoluted sometimes...but there were rarely plot holes. it might be over the top, but it's still hugely fun and incredible. also, has the best gameplay of the series.
3. MGS3 - incredible enemies, incredible ending, incredible music.

Honestly, I thought 1 was good, but I never saw what the hype was about. I also thought Rose was irritating, but I never minded Raiden as a character. Actually, I think he's the best character in 4 (it's a shame his new game looks so wack). 4 clearly had the best play mechanic... the camo system was great, but I thought 3 was just a spectacularly polished game.

Pretty hard to rank them, like them all in different ways.

Anyway, remembered that i'm still waiting for a remake of MG1 and MG2 :lol
Shit, 'rookie' Solid Snake vs
Big Boss
, think about it for a second!

1. MGS1 - the game is perfect to me, nothing else to be said.
2. MGS2 - it took me a while to fall for the game, but after playing it a few times, it became one of my fav mgs games
3. MGS3 - it started slow for me, but I ended up loving it. It was a tie between this and mgs4 for 3rd place, but the overkill in cut scenes in 4 gave this one the leg up.
-------
4. MGS4 - the reason I bought a ps3, projector, and surround sound system. Incredible fucking game. I want to give it #1 just for that reason alone, but realistically it fell short in some areas.

1) MGS 3
2) MGS (actually, the TTS, because eyeballs, mothafucka!)
3) MGS 4

I thought Raiden was the only interesting part of MGS 2. I hated the bosses, story, and tone of the game. The main reason I liked the games in the first place were the bosses and idea of a wild soldier taking on even wilder soldiers in single combat. Of course, I always hated the mechanical bosses (which means most of MGS 4).

1. MGS2; Not just the best video game sequel, but a sequel that belongs in the company of The Godfather, part 2 and The Empire Strikes Back. Metal Gear Solid 2 doesn't just expand the scope of MGS1, but it radically introduces new themes, characters, and plot lines that only enhance the original. Kojima did not squander his capital by making just another MGS game, and instead decided to subvert and revolutionize not just his franchise, but the expectation for all sequels, in any medium, to come. It is remarkable.
2. MGS3.
3. MGS1.
4. MGS4; A horribly missed opportunity to resolve the Snake/Meryl relationship by contrasting it with the Meryl/Campbell situation. What should have been an Oedipus greek tragedy devolved into Mr. and Mrs. Smith set pieces, George Lucas levels of revisionism, and a surrender to fan expectations, something that MGS2 avoided entirely. It's no surprise that the quieter moments, such as those between Meryl and Snake early in the game, are the best. And, to completely miss the tone of the entire game, Kojima wimps out and second guesses the ending. A truly missed opportunity.

Metal gear solid: From the intro music as you hit the start button to the end where liquid snake screams 'Its not over yet snake' this game has you by the balls. It's gripping and it's the only game in my 14 year history of gaming that has true villains.

Liquid snake, ocelot, sniper wolf, frankie, vulcan and ofcourse psycho mantis. Brilliant absolutely brilliant game.

Metal gear solid 2: what a way to start the game. Jumping off a bridge to going what the fuck is this when you control raiden for the first time. Not as good as number one but no shame in that.

Metal gear solid 4. Forget everything. Forget the cheesiness and the nanomachine bullshit. Forget meryl, otacon blubbering like a moron and johnny BS.

When you hear that theme music in Act 4, aaah the memories and nostalgia washed over me.

Hard to rank but I like this order. If 4 had better boss battles it would be 1st. Or if 3 had worse Boss battles it would be 2nd. That's the tipping point but they are all amazing and really close in quality. Easily the greatest franchise in gaming.

I didn't see anything about three choices being required, so there you go. MGS1 and MGS4 are quality games, but neither had an impact on me quite like the PS2 titles. MGS2 gets the edge for having, in my opinion, the best take on the Metal Gear Solid formula. MGS3 was great, but I grew tired of constantly fiddling with menus to change my camo or patch up Snake. MGS2 was more straight to the point, the same formula as MGS1 but with several refinements that make it a bit easier to play these days. It's one of my most replayed games for a reason.

I've actually replayed most of these within the last two months, with only 2 and 4 to go. Though I really think you should have allowed MG1 and 2 to be included as MG2 is an amazing game.

1. MGS1

I'm not voting on the rest as I can't decide. But having just beat MGS1 again yesterday I am very confident that it is the best MGS game out there and one of the best games ever.
