Ok, I'm now representin' Lego with my avatar, I think it's time we took over GAF with Legotars

I did draw a LEGO version of myself in Adobe Illustrator for a work-related project, but I've been using it as my Facebook photo since.

Erm..

Not sure what I was expecting, but it wasn't that.

I kind of understand what they are trying to do, but it just looks ugly. Are those axle bricks supposed to be coal?

Meh

Do you mean the little black crosses? They seem to be connectors so you can rearrange the four parts of the cube.

Personally I dislike it very much. I don't know Minecraft, so for me it has no display-value at all.

A lot of the sets you guys are talking about seem to be out of stock in the UK already. Weird how they are still available in the US. :(

As I mentioned, amazon.com ship to the UK, and the original price was so much lower on what I ordered, that even including import duty (which you pay a deposit for upfront) it was less than I could have got it here.

Not sure about smaller sets, but seems worth it for the larger, rarer ones.. (plus just seen that package is out for delivery, six days after ordering!)

Finally it came down to "I'd be paying $35 for a 1x1 brick with a creeper face printed on it"

Basically. It does look 'nice' though, like it should almost. In a way it seems very representative of the game. Here's the press release via Brickset-

BILLUND, Denmark –The LEGO Group and Mojang have released purchase details and pictures of the LEGO® Minecraft™ Micro World today.

The new set, which was the first to receive 10,000 votes of support from users on the global LEGO CUUSOO idea collection platform, will be available for purchase in summer 2012, but can be pre-ordered from today, exclusively through Mojang retail partner Jinx.com for $34.95/€34.95/£34.99 at http://www.jinx.com/LEGOMinecraft. The sets will also be sold in select LEGO brand retail stores and the LEGO online shop from summer 2012.

“LEGO Minecraft Micro World is designed to celebrate the essence of the LEGO concept and the Minecraft gaming experience,” said Paal Smith-Meyer, Head of the LEGO New Business Group. Each set features four cubic modular vignettes that can be connected to recreate the Minecraft experience in LEGO bricks. One Minecraft block is represented as one 1x1 LEGO plate with a tile on top - not a perfect cube, but the best approximation at the chosen scale.

LEGO Minecraft Micro World includes two of Minecraft's most iconic characters, Steve and a Creeper, represented as "Micro Mobs." The model presents a standard for building a Minecraft world that can be configured any way the builder likes.

The surface of the modules comes off to reveal mines and hidden resources beneath. Fans can build their own landscapes, stack cubes on top of each other, to build the world of Minecraft as they wish.

The product was developed in collaboration with four LEGO fans: Chris Malloy, Michael Thomas, Kyle Tingey, and Bjarne Panduro Tveskov. These fans developed concepts alongside LEGO designers and helped shape the product into its final version.

Upon seeing the physical model the first time, Mojang founder Markus “Notch” Persson exclaimed: “Woohoo!”

LEGO CUUSOO is a website where LEGO fans can submit their ideas for new LEGO products and collect votes to make their ideas become a reality. They can also vote for other users’ ideas. It can be found at http://lego.cuusoo.com.
Ideas that are supported by 10,000 votes have a chance of being selected to become part of the LEGO Group’s product portfolio. Consumers who have their ideas chosen will earn 1% of the total net sales of the product.

Mojang will donate the 1% proceeds from LEGO CUUSOO to charity.

For more on the co-creation process for LEGO Minecraft Micro World, see the LEGO CUUSOO blog at http://legocuusoo.posterous.com.

That Lego Minecraft is surprisingly cute for what it is. Microscale is something I can dig. I may grab it as the price is right for the piece count, and various colored flat plates are something you can never have enough of.

Also, those axle blocks are not coal - they are you can connect various 6x6 creations together to put your own little world together.

Depending on the piece count, those will be perfect for building miniscale landscapes (duh) and epics.

Fake edit: Meh, 7.28 (euro-)cent per piece. Not that great IMHO. Are there any pieces you can't get by the handfull from other sources (except the mobs)?

It doesn't appear that there are any unique pieces. I always look at sets in the $0.07-0.10 range a good value. Microscale is a BIT different because of the piece size, but being on the lower end of that is a plus.

The thread in the Games forum on this is bothering me a bit, haha. I'm refraining from posting my comments, though. I'll leave the real discussion to us Lego junkies.

Picture my gf took last night of me and my imperial shuttle set after it arrived from UPS. I only had time to sort to bags last night. She commented I looked like a kid. Pardon me looking trashy, i had just gotten back from the gym.

She also is extremely worried about this build, haha.

With this and tantive iv coming I am stoked!

would like some pictures when you're done. And from anyone else.

We have an OK system right now, but I just bought 8 big sets, so my system will collapse when those get broken down and I need to expand it in a controlled way. its the 'special' pieces I have most problem with. Plates/bricks/slopes pretty much go by size, but there are just so many different tiny pieces..

Right now I am using a mixture of these;

H5UM7.jpg

Prices vary due to size but for UK GAF you can get them in Rymans. I use a variety of less than 1L priced from 89p up to about £7. So far I am sorting only by colour but think I need to look at by type too at least for certain parts. Slopes, plates, bricks and others to begin with perhaps.

At last count I had about 20 boxes and they stack really well but I still have a good 5kg of unsorted bricks.

Good point, just for the pieces it could be useful, especially if you are into microscale. And it sounds like it creates some basic rules for a micro minecraft world, so I'm sure we'll see some nice MOCs

I use those along with a chest of drawers that my father made. Mostly for wheels; structural elements; technic etc. I have a plastic trolley that holds 3 large (9 litre) or 6 smaller (4 litre) boxes, and a ton of the really small ones which sit in a holder like a giant spice rack, for small technics (connectors, pegs etc)

Just found an amazing score at Meijers here in Battle Creek, MI. *EDIT - THIS WAS ACTUALLY AT TARGET*

15$ (49.99 msrp)

It was the last Grievious ship but there was one more turbo tank left at the 35$ price. My wife found them and bought them just now. This kind of makes up for missing out on that Slave 1 for 35$ I saw a couple of months ago and passed on.

How playable are the modulars? Not built one yet but the internals look like they get covered up. Wonder if you can leave the back walls off?

Each floor comes off as stated by bucknuticus. Regarding leaving the backs off...I mean, if you wanted to, you could. Let's just say there's nothing stopping you from doing so! Besides that, the newer modulars have really stepped up the general decor, so playability definitely becomes a more "real" concept.

You passed on slave 1 for 35 bucks?!?!??!?! God I hate you.

Meh, I just don't like clone era stuff. Did they have any original trilogy stuff?

I think I'm in the minority here when I say this, but I'm actually buying these for my children to play with, haha.

I have the Millennium Falcon and Luke's Land Speeder sitting here waiting to be wrapped for my 5 yr old's birthday present. With just those 2 sets, there's not too much to do. With the addition of the above sets it really expands on the possibilities for play. Neither of the above sets were on my radar but at that price you'd be crazy to pass on them IMO!

What you see is all they had for Star Wars sets. Apparently they also had Harry Potter legos on sale but they were all sold out. No loss for me, but others may be interested.

EDIT: Btw, that Slave 1 was at Target in case you want to keep en eye out

Town Hall looks awesome- got to pick up the Pet Shop first though.

Completely passed on the Fire Station and Grand Emporium, but this is a must.

Some clone wars era stuff looks great, they just haven't released nice sets for most things I like. UCS Obi Wans Jedi fighter? Just boring, give me something like a Republic Star Destroyer or such.

That's probably the best one yet. When does it come out?

I seem to remember someone saying around March 1st. Also this:
10224 Town Hall
Ages 14+. 2,766 pieces.
US $199.99 CA $249.99 DE 179.99 € UK 149.99 £ DK 1499 DKK
Keep the wheels of commerce turning with the authentic Town Hall!
This classic 3-storey town hall building is the latest addition to the LEGO® Modular Buildings series. This highly-detailed model features large entrance-way columns and coat of arms, a tall bell tower with clock and a large skylight giving a view inside the building. On the ground floor, the large hall, tax office and auditorium are perfect for servicing the town’s citizens. Take the working elevator up to the secretary and mayor's offices on the second floor, furnished eloquently with desks, chairs, paintings and even a frog sculpture. There’s even a balcony for addressing the town's citizens. On the third floor, a spacious meeting room features a large conference table, chairs, globe and plants. Includes 8 minifigures: mayor, secretary, bride and groom, press woman, janitor and 2 children.
• Includes 8 minifigures: mayor, secretary, bride and groom, press woman, janitor and 2 children
• Features painting, desks, chairs, sculpture, lamp, conference table, globe, plants and bench
• Functioning elevator with space for 2 minifigures and ladder access to roof
• Bell tower features bench and maintenance ladder
• Roof features skylight with view inside the building
• Measures 10” (25.5 cm) wide and 20” (50 cm) high
• Address the citizens from the balcony!
• Combine with other LEGO® Modular buildings like the 10218 Pet Shop and 10211 Grand Emporium!

Notice that the bolded portion doesn't include Fire Brigade. For serious folks, if you're thinking of grabbing any of the modulars to start collecting them, get the damned Fire Brigade, haha. It's right in front of your eyes. Hell, it's not even pictured with the Town Hall layout.

I love, Love, LOVE the Tantive IV! Probably my favorite ship in my collection.

Great deals! At those prices, I'd make exception to my OT-only policy and grab those, too!

I don't collect games or dvds. In fact I was having the hardest time finding out what to keep. I think I have found a home with legos. The fact they dont tend to depreciate is gravy.

midi falcon, or the big one? That'd be quite a challenge for a 5-year-old to put together, or lift for play. You building it for him, so you both get a present? ;)

Lots of news this morning!

Be sure to check out the designer video for the Town Hall. Lots of interesting information there, including that this is the first modular building by a new designer!

I also decided to join the LEGO-ized avatar movement - let's keep it spreading!

The big one. I'll build it with them as an activity over time. Ages are 3 and a soon to be 5 yr old. Both are girls. I'll try and let my 5 yr old do a solo build on the speeder. I'll post some pics once all the dust settles from the birthday. I think they learned a lot while building the Alien Conquest sets. Also, as they play with them they fall apart and they've figures out how to reattach everything, so that's a step in the right direction!

As a father of 1 & 5 year old girls, the new "Friends" Lego series pisses me off to no end. How do you feel about it? Glad you're encouraging them to play with more traditional sets.

I completely missed that - great find!

Yes that is the upcoming UCS R2-D2 and the rumored "modular-style" haunted house. Soooo looking forward to the latter!

Finished off the Fire Brigade last night, and I really liked the second floor. You build a refrigerator! I don't know why I enjoyed that detail so much, but I did.

I also thought how the bell worked was pretty neat as well. Good build, and the brick detail on the outside of the second floor is neat.

Only problem I had was I screwed up on the date bricks the first time, and they are still a bit... wonky.

Now, just waiting on double VIP points in March for Pet Store and Town Hall to come out.

I figured out what I am going to do with my extra Star Wars pieces: Imperial secret meeting with corrupt Mayor of Modular-ville, with the rebels standing outside about to break in like a SWAT team.

Honestly? It doesn't bother me at all. If she would rather have the new Friends line of legos, I would've been glad to have gotten them for her. The sets themselves are pretty good. Lots of micro builds throughout all of those sets. I was disappointed that every set seemed to contain a checkout and little lego money, but beyond that I really think they are solid builds. Seriously, I would rather just get city sets if given the choice. Price is a big deal though. To get a bunch of the Friends collection, it would cost more than this dollhouse, which they already own:

kidkraft-so-chic-dollhouse-98e09.jpg

Just look at that thing. It's amazing. It is 2 sided, on caster wheels for moving it around the house, has all wooden furniture for every room, and I've seen 6 girls play with it at the same time with no problems. I got it on sale for x-mas 2010 for 150$. The Lego Friends collection just cannot compete with that kind of stuff IMO. Other companies do "girl toys" better and cheaper. So, my girls have plenty of "girl stuff" already. Honestly, I believe they prefer Star Wars simply because it is advertised better. They play the lego video game, watch the clone wars cartoon, and have seen the movies. Kids want stuff they see and they see Star Wars goddamn everywhere. Also, I have the distinct feeling that I paid 120$ for the Millennium Falcon just so my daughter can have a Princess Lea mini fig to play with, ha!

As an aside, the Friends line of Legos was sold out at my local Target, so I think they'll be around for awhile!

If you plan to buy Town Hall and Pet Shop, you should really have a look at Fire Brigade and GE. They are still available for MSRP, but Fire Brigade wont be for long and prices will go up. Maybe you will hate yourself later for not buying it.
