I'm not gonna pimp it too much (reading through the FAQ I can't see anything against it too much) but the studio I work for has just released its first original IP: Blockolicious.

It's a fast-paced puzzle game. I won't post screenshots (I fear that'd be going a bit too far!) but here are the itunes links:

iPhone/iPod: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id487627840?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo=4
iPad: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id486343023?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo=4

For the record, I did a bit of game design work on it (not a lot, mind you), but still. We're a small independent studio and we're really hoping for a hit!

You can watch the trailer here if you're on the fence (or curious about what it looks/plays like): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ebh2UQJXqE

Pimp away man, I get some very pleasant surprises by my blind downloading of GAFfer games. Ninjagorilla is a Simogo dude, rlan and co are with Halfbrick, BenSks dropped a great zombie game last week, plus the dev for Kids vs Goblins posts and pimps here too. All welcome (at least by me).

Enjoy my 69p :p

I've been on GAF for a few years now, and this is the first time I can actually do that (I've been in the industry for like 9 years now) so it's pretty cool.

I hope you like it!

I think of all the places to do it, this thread will have the lowest chance of getting you banned. Making your own thread for it and pimping it though, that's just ban bait.

Just got notification that Neuroshima Hex is down from 4.99 to 2.99. Worth it for a boardgame/strategie-lover?

Absolutely. Totally addicting and stands alongside the best board games for presentation. It's almost like it was designed for iOS it works so well. Gameplay is very simple, you'll just have to peak at the rules book a few times in your first couple of games to remember the symbols.

Well, The Blocks Cometh is a winner. I don't even like virtual controls, but this is one of those occasions where they don't hinder the game any. Great "endless" concept. Awesome freakin' music. The music alone has kinda suckered me in. But it definitely has some very polished mechanics. The wall jumping, especially, works great.

EDIT: Awesome Land just went free.

Being modified! What was the way around this again?

If you have even a passing interest in CCG or games that require strategy you owe it to yourself to give this game a try.

It's by far the best CCG on iOS and may well be the best I've ever experienced with its use of technology and real time mechanics.

You can get a lot of cards for free completing the story mode and with the daily rewards for multiplayer games.

A new version was released yesterday that addresses some of the online issues the game had (and also some card balancing), so now it's a good time to get on it IMO.

In this thread, we, the people who actually read it, mostly like the pimping. A couple of screenshots at least couldn't hurt.

Well, since people are telling me to go further! :)

Here's a few screenshots of our game, Blockolicious. Sadly, all I have are promo screenshots but I'll explain how the game works.

To play, you tap on the colored blocks that form a chain of 3 or more. Whenever you tap on a chain, it collapses on the tap point and forms a juice block. Obviously, the bigger the chain, the more points you'll get.

If you get 3 or more Juice Blocks of the same color in a chain, tapping that chain creates a bomb block. Using a bomb block clears out all the blocks of the same color, giving you points for every block cleared. If you make a bomb block from more than 3 juice blocks, the multiplier on the bomb block gets higher, and will give you more points when you detonate it.

The catch is that juice blocks have a limited lifespan; they empty over time, so you have to be quick to make bomb blocks. Whenever you create a new juice block next to another juice block, however, every juice block that is connected (regardless of color) will be refilled.

There are also powerups: there's 3 unlocked from the start and 3 more you can unlock as you play and get coins. Each powerup is assigned to a block color, so clearing more of that color fills up the powerup for use quicker. The powerups range from clearing random blocks, to clearing 2 rows of blocks, to giving you a 2x multiplier to all points for 10 seconds, etc.

There *are* IAPs but they are restricted to buying coins to unlock the new powerups and pre-filling your powerups before the game starts. You'll still get coins playing normally though, so they are not necessary at *all* to play the game. They are there if you want to just want to unlock stuff quicker.

All in all it makes for a very fun and fast-paced game. Let me know if you guys have any questions about it!

Yeah, saw it mentioned over on TA, and then noticed the "iPad only" part...

Just had a play, it's quite a fun little game and the graphics are gorgeous. You guys should see about being sponsored by a fruit juice company ASAP, this game made me thirsty just playing it!

I feel like I'm not doing it quite right though, I can't seem to get enough of the juice blocks to make a bomb very often. Most of the time I'm just hitting blocks to turn them into liquid over and over again but rarely do I get three of the same colour. Is that by design? I think I'm getting the gist of it, but it feels like I should be doing something with those juice blocks more often than I am.

This is true for now. However an iPhone iPod version is supposed to be coming out in a few weeks.

Honestly I don't know the kind of compromises required to make it work on a smaller screen. The iPad feels perfect for all the stuff you want to keep track of. I feel phone players will be at a disadvantage. Then again the developers are saying that it's very playable nonetheless, I'd definitely check it out when it comes out.

Sadly no - the problem is that we want to make the game downloadable over 3G, so the iPhone version can't go over 20mb. This means no universal, sorry :(

This makes me wonder... why not do a >20mb "pocket" version, then a Universal version for people who want it on all their devices without having to buy it twice? That seems to solve the problem a little more neatly.

Of course, I also think the 20mb limit should just go away... I'm sure I consumed a lot more than 20mb streaming music on my way to work this morning.

It's not by design per se that you're not getting three of the same color - you should be able to. The thing to watch out for is where you collapse your chains. That's the single most important element to the game's strategy: I would highly suggest you collapse them to give yourself a higher chance of spawning blocks of the color you want in a desirable position.

For example, if you have something like this in the top 2 rows:
(o is an orange block, b is a blue block)
ooo
boo

I would suggest you collapse either on the orange above the blue block, or one of the 2 oranges 2 spaces to the right of the blue block. If you collapse above the blue block, you'll clear 4 blocks on the side, 2 of them having the potential to be blue, which could give you a juice block. If you apply this sort of logic to when you also have juice blocks, you'll continually be spawning more and more blocks, giving you more chances at being able to randomly spawn the correct color. A lot of the strategy to getting high scores is about collapsing at the best spots to maximize your chances of getting the blocks you want.

I'll talk about it with our people here, but I think that's an Apple problem. I remember when I was at my previous job that Apple had strict requirements as to how you could publish games on the App Store, one of which was if you have a universal app, you can't have another paid app that had the same content but only for a specific device. I might be wrong, but there's a lot of weird stuff with that.

We've had this discussion more than a few times over the months with different devs. There must be some reason we're not seeing as consumers (other than the 20meg limit that keeps being bought up), but I don't know what it is. S&S and World of Goo and others seem to do just fine with a pocket version and a more expensive universal version, and they get much praise for it too.

Ah, that makes sense. So where you collapse the blocks affects the drops differently? Cool, I'll bear that in mind!

Well it affects the drops in that new blocks will be spawned to fill the empty space created by the chain. The collapse point does not spawn a new block, though, so that's why it's smart to collapse somewhere to give you the highest chance of getting the blocks you want.

Playing Blockalicious. Super fun, especially if you love block-clearing games like me :)
Is this the first game from this dev? Congratulation either way, the presentation is great. Major happy-delicious vibes. Took me a few games to get a strategy going, but now I'm chaining and bombing like crazy.

Gonna grab Pizza Vs Skeletons, I smell a sleeper hit.

Anyone playing the latest Ragdoll Blaster? I see it's climbing the charts, but very little talk of it here.

It's our first original IP. We've made games in the past for other people as an outsourcing company, but we're starting to make our own stuff.

There's a LOT of vets in the company. A lot of people are EA Mobile vets (I was there too 4 years ago, but I left) in the company so we know a thing or two about mobile games :)

Matt, the designer who came up with the game also told me I should put these up here:

Hey y'all. I'm a pretty big iOS gamer, and have spent way too much on way too many iOS games.

The one I always come back to is Sword of Fargoal. It's a rogue-like, and is a remake of an older game of same name.

You start off in level one of a dungeon, goal is to explore and survive, making your way down to lower depths of the dungeon to ultimately find the Sword and make it back out alive.

The whole time you're exploring and finding gold, new weapons, shields, potions, spells, wands, etc., and fighting different creatures who get progressively harder the lower you get in the dungeon.

The thing with these (rogue-like) games is, you're probably not going to win. I mean, you're almost certainly going to die. But it's so much fun on your way to that death! It's definitely one of those "it's the journey, not the destination" kind of feelings. Every time you play you're going to find different combinations of items, and encounter the monsters in different places and ways. One attempt may yield you a badass shield and a bunch of healing potions. You are now a tank. Another playthrough and you've got shitty weapons, but some great attack wands and some invisibility potions. You are now a sneaky little bitch. =)

The graphics are pretty plain, nothing to write home about, but they're good enough to really nail the experience.

I could go on, but basically, from an avid iOS gamer - this game is awesome, and you should try it.

(there are two versions right now, Sword of Fargoal and Sword of Fargoal Legends, I think. I *think* legends is the one to get, as it's universal(?))

Got any other RPG/rogue like games you would recommend?

Does anyone know what the update for the unofficial Dominion app did yesterday?

edit: also when is the official one coming?!?

Protip: you can search for apps on Appshopper.com to find update info:

- Fixed hang that could happen when the AI plays a Cellar as its last card in its hand.
- Fixed hang that could happen when the AI plays a Throne Room and then doesn't want to play another action.
- Fixed attack cards to attack the next player first instead of always starting with the human player.

The official app is supposedly coming soon but I haven't heard any news lately.

Forgot that I had no music in my iPad. Just played my first game of Beat Hazard to the dulcet tones of Professor Brian Cox via The Infinite Monkey Cage podcast.

Blockalicous- Really like it, wish it it was a touch slower, to allow for more strategy. There are some times when furiously tapping is arguably your best bet if time is running out, but I'm saving coins for the time extension power-up. High score is 423k, I guess the leaderboards will be kind of useless once people get the more powerful powerups? Idk maybe they're not that tough to get. No IAP is interesting, looks like it's set up for it. Edit: nvm, IAP is there
Edit: minor bug where a juice block appears about a half a block's height above where it should be but still behaves as normal.

Beat Hazard feels like it was designed with Daft Punk's Alive 2007 in mind, haha.

Grabbed Beat Sneak based on watching the video of that guy sucking at it, and being determined to prove it wasn't that hard. Will report back.

Beat Sneak Bandit is brilliant. One of those game I'm happy I paid full price and helped the developers a little. It could 0.99 tomorrow and I wouldn't care. :)
