Media Create Sales: Week 6, 2012 (Feb 06 - Feb 12)

Final Fantasy XIII-2 really ended up showing some impressive legs considering the mega bomb it was claimed to be. It obviously still didn't sell to expectations but throw in a "Best" release and the total SKU's would likely hit 1 million, right?
It's still very front-loaded, just not quite as much as the most extreme examples.

I don't really think you can separate the two given FFXIII did ~1.9m already. As a FF game it's a gigantic bomb and as a FF on PS3 it's... still a gigantic bomb.
Sure; it just makes obvious that a giant FF bomb is still better than anything else PS3 has going for it. EDIT: Correction, with its BEST added in Metal Gear Solid 4 has XIII-2 beat by a fair amount.

I just think that PSN ratings is a good indication of retail sales.
Ragnarok got less than 1000 ratings first week, while Gravity Rush was something around 1200, in second week it got +600.
Also, i think only one full game on JP PSN for which we know PSN sales is Steins Gates for PSP - it was 3000k, does anyone care to checkout , how may ratings it got?

I don't remember Steins Gates being a million seller in Japan. Do you mean 30K or 3000?

If you add all the re-releases don't RE 5 and MGS4 reach the million too?

Resident Evil 5 520,564
Resident Evil 5: Alternative Edition 279,951
Resident Evil 5: Alternative Edition PlayStation Move Special Pack 7,957
Resident Evil 5: Alternative Edition (PlayStation 3 the Best) 109,281

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots 706,461
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (BEST) 189,973

So about ~900k for both. RE5 sold 124k units on X360 though.

In fact when I think of the DS library, I scarcely think of anything wildly new and unprecedentedly creative.

I think of FF3 and FF4, Chrystal Chronicles, DQ 4/5/6/9/Monsters, Chrono Trigger, Radiant Historia, Etrian Odyssey (also coming to 3DS), Rhythm Heaven (began on GBA, continuing on Wii, touch not necessary), Zelda Phantom Hourglass, Zelda Spirit Tracks (both hated BECAUSE they use touch control), New Super Mario Bros., Bowser's Inside Story (3DS is soon getting its own Mario RPG), Mario Kart DS, Contra 4, GTA Chinatown Wars, Metroid Prime Pinball, uh...the list goes on and on.

When you make a statement like that, you basically have one or two games in mind from the DS's earliest years. Kirby's Canvas Curse, Elite Beat Agents, and maybe Yoshi Touch & Go and Nintendogs. On the whole though, the platform is made up of pretty regular (but fantastic!) gaming experiences, and so is the 3DS.

When I think of DS, I think of Pokemon and TWEWY.

Anyways, the semi controversial point i want to get out is that ports/iterative versions on the 3DS -are not- seen as the same milstone that they are on the Vita. But on the weight of sales evidence that's because they AREN'T!

It shouldn't be controversial at all that the 3DS' library is more conservative than the NDS -- in part because they shed their whole casual market to iOS, in part because they purposely moved to pick up PSP franchises that were already more "conservative" (or maybe "traditional") than NDS, and partially because it's a consolidation system.

I don't think the issue with the Vita is really that its software is too full of iterative versions, just that it doesn't have iterations on anything popular enough at the moment. And when you have two systems that are both getting iterative releases, the disadvantage is to the less popular system: the market leader can ride on getting the latest Hot Shit X whereas for the underdog, each release of Popular In The Right Niche I Guess: Low-Selling Stories is one more title that isn't a potential come-from-nowhere new-IP hit.

Yes please, the argument stays the same.

There's no "argument." Chartz numbers are made-up bullshit and are not to be used here.

Wow @ Revelations, it's holding up pretty nicely!! Probably will reach 300k LTD, right?

Man, Capcom must be really happy with their overall performance on the 3DS! I wonder what's next for them regarding the platform?? One can only hope they'll continue with the serious efforts.

The 3DS trio showing legs as usual, nothing to add to that.

Gravity Daze has indeed sold very well for what little userbase it has to cover, but can it really be called a success?? I don't know, that's probably something we will be able ot know for sure in the future, not now.

Vita below 14k is a red sign imo, something has to happen/be done to remedy this, or it's going to be too late for a full recovery in the first years.

RE5 and RE5AE aren't the same game and can't be combined if you want to go for a full comparison.

Vita is really trending down dangerously. With nothing noteworthy at all in the horizon, and probably the only worthwhile title coming out anytime remotely soon being Persona 4 Golden... it's not going to be good for Sony at all.

this!

I'm surprised the first several comments in the thread noted the success of the one game, while failing to notice the very real lack of Vita sales. It's not just that it's getting destroyed in sales by the 3DS and outsold by the PSP...it's seeing lowering sales month to month (specifically, sales that weren't high to begin with).

That's where the discussion should be here. It's the only new console on the market and it's treading in places it does not want to be in. Then again, I'm new to the thread, so I'm sure all that's been talked about by now.

A slightly interesting idea of mine, as everyone's noted gravity daze has had no effect on vita hardware sales, well maybe it did, maybe without it vita would have been down under 10k this week

How is that different from Idolm@ster?

Idolmaster is a complete game and extremely lengthy. The DLC that's offered are extensions of the game similar to how DLC for RPGs are handled. They add optional costumes, accessories, and various elements into the existing game.

Not the same as shipping an incomplete game and then continuing it via DLC!

At least another great mystery in these threads is sold, the not so random use of "#".

It should be obvious from hardware though.

I think of Castlevania. Is the only game that can make me change my mind of buying a 3DS instead of Vita right now.

Once I decided to get 3DS when Theatrhytm comes out, things are way easier now.

Let's see if the game will bomb. I'm kinda curious. I agree, it's terrible scheme. Then again, Japan is a country where people buy 3-hour long VN for 90$.

Wait, what 3 hour long VNs are sold for 90 bucks and are successful? I'm really curious here.

Don't VNs last a few hours only, with no replay value? Aren't they even more expensive than regular titles? Sure, they might be on PC, but still - there is a market for something like that, even if we consider it outrageous. Has there been any uproar among the Japanese for Ciel no Surge payment scheme?

Duckroll gonna smite you for talking out yo ass.

Even I know VNs do offer a bunch of re playability since people would want to experience all of the endings.

So you're telling me that you're talking about something without actually knowing the facts? I was hoping there was actually some example of a 3 hour VN which people made fun of for being short and expensive but actually sold a ton. It seems I was mistaken to place any faith that your comments have any intelligent thought behind them after all. :(

And no, the majority of VNs and ADVs especially those which are actually popular, generally last 10-20 hours. They also have multiple endings and paths, some of which usually require completing multiple routes. They're also on console, and no they don't cost more than a typical Japanese console game, which these days would run someone up 90 USD anyway because the yen sucks.

As for Ciel, the actual format of release has not actually been officially confirmed, which is actually why there is a bit of an uproar online. The information was leaked by a retailer who mentioned the release format being detailed by Koei Tecmo in a distribution letter. The game as far anyone knows officially, is a "complete" retail product. If it does turn out that the game is only the first episode, with DLC scenarios planned monthly for another year, and they do not make this clear before the release of thegame, I think the backlash would be pretty substantial.

Chris, asking this feels a bit like riding on your back but can you find figures for Ghost Babel too ? Thank you much in advance.

There are Dengeki charts from 2009 too (and maybe 2008, I don't remember) with extended software data. Captain Smoker used to post them.
Smoker compiled that list for 2010 and 2011 but I was too lazy to search for any year before or 2012. On my to-do list.

Even I know VNs do offer a bunch of re playability since people would want to experience all of the endings.

In the non Tokimemo-esque games (ones you'd refer to as VN's) you're more likely to have to go through every character for proper closure to the story.

I'd say 30-50hrs is a more accurate number for typical playthrough, assuming you use flowcharts to go through game flags in the correct order.

What I meant was simply : how do you greenlight a game on a handheld of a series, whose name became famous because of the intense cinematic nature of a cutting-edge entry launched earlier ?

Same for Killer Instinct : it was praised for its graphics and gameplay on SNES, none of which could have been rendered properly on GB. But Rare still went for that way.

Okay, yeah I guess you're right it looks worse, but it's not really that bad right?

Ghost Babel was more of sequel to the older Metal Gear (non solid) series. It took the older style along with some mechanics from MGS and made something original out of it.

I'm not sure what you're getting at?

I don't think either is really as crazy trying to port RE1 to the GBC. And honestly porting KI to the GB did kinda make sense, the first 2 Mortal Kombat which were known for their digitized graphics had received GB versions, and MK3 was coming out at the same time KI GB was made.

Can you cite a difference between Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid which doesn't fundamentally come down to production values and evolution over time?

Of corse It's falling, vita is getting a ps3 syndrome: few new jrpg coming and sony doesn't care. I mean the best cannot be a persona 4 rehash. Imho

How many new jrpgs does Nintendo's 3DS after a year on the market? How long has Vita been on out?

Bad economy, high price tag, weak launch, weak release schedule, and competition not only from 3DS but PSP as well. No mystery why Vita is doing poorly. I'll be surprised if it stays above 10k for much longer.

Imho Nintendo doesn't need jrpg on 3ds, people buy it for mario kart/mario landm/Pokemon/Layton and now monster hunter.
People buy vita and psp for console portable counterparts of ps2/3 games. In Japan you sell jrpg and monster hunter on Sony consoles, so vita needs them or at least a promise to see them.
I fear vita release on market was too rushed for Japan at least.

From the eShop:

Beyond the Labyrinth
Brave Company
Unchained Blades Rexx (also on PSP)
Denpa Ningen no RPG (download)

The only one that should have sold well is Denpa Ningen no RPG though and we don't know how much exactly. Also it's very cheap and looks like DQ.

But they also have a dedicated folder for download RPGs now which is full of VC GB and DSiWare RPGs. Didn't think there would be so many.

Brave Company is not a RPG. It's a simulation game which is meant to resemble the style of a RPG. It's also on iOS (f2p).
