Worlds That Deserve a Video Game

I recent watched The Secret World of Arrietty (if you haven't seen it yet, you really should) and I couldn't help but imagine how amazing it would be to explore such a world in a video game.

First of all, the thought of exploring any world from a much smaller perspective is very appealing to me. Things we take for granted/look over can become your greatest danger or your greatest help for survival. I also believe some amazing platforming opportunities can be brought to light, from exploring a yard or making your way through a house. Enemies could range from bugs, birds, cats, humans, and the fight for survival in general. Mostly I imagine a combination of Deadly Creatures and Shadow of the Colossus with major JRPG/Platforming elements, and it brings a huge grin to my face.

What other worlds would make a great setting for a video game?

Well, it's beautifully animated and it might well make a good setting for a game but the world in "The Secret World of Arrietty" is actually the world of Mary Norton's "Borrowers" books (and subsequent TV series & movies), rather than anything that Studio Ghibli have created.

I haven't actually read Alloy of Law yet, although part of why I proposed Mistborn was because I liked the idea of seeing Luthadel during the period of the original trilogy. Is AoL good?

It's surprisingly good for what it is, and I think the Western-with-allomancy/feruchemy setting would make for a more interesting game. No
Mistborn
, and somewhat watered down powers, which might actually make the game feel less limiting (games where you have too many high-level powers tend to be a bit arbitrary in how they then restrict you).

The First Age of Middle Earth. Shamelessly stealing from Wikipedia:

The chief battles of the First Age are:

The First Battle of Beleriand, otherwise unnamed, was fought before the return of the Noldor between the Sindar and the forces of Morgoth. Denethor, king of the Laiquendi, was killed during the battle, causing the Laiquendi to forsake war with Morgoth, and the Girdle of Melian was established to protect Doriath thereafter. The cities of the Falas would remain under siege until the Dagor-nuin-Giliath.
The Dagor-nuin-Giliath (Battle under the Stars, so named because it was fought before the rising of the Sun) was fought soon after the arrival of the Noldor. Morgoth sent a raiding party from Angband to attack the Noldor encampment in Hithlum, but the Elves drove it back. Fëanor was killed.
The Dagor Aglareb (Glorious Battle) was fought about 60 years after the return of the Noldor. Morgoth again attacked the Noldor, and again with no success. The Noldor became so bold as to besiege Angband. However, the Siege was of limited effectiveness, because the northern side of Angband was on the north side of the Ered Engrin, and was unapproachable.
The Dagor Bragollach (Battle of Sudden Flame) began when Morgoth poured rivers of fire out of Angband, ruining the besieging Noldorin armies. The Noldor eventually mustered a defence, but their losses were severe. For instance, the green plain of Ard-galen had been permanently laid waste by the rivers of fire, and was now called Anfauglith, the Choking Dust; and the highlands of Dorthonion, which had been inhabited by Edain, were made inhospitable.
The Nírnaeth Arnoediad (Unnumbered Tears) was the first battle to be initiated by the Noldor. They massed an army composed of Elves, Edain, and the houses of Bór and Ulfang allied to the Sons of Fëanor. The Elves and their allies advanced very close to Angband, but Morgoth's trickery had upset their battle plan, and Ulfang proved treacherous. The name "Unnumbered Tears" comes from the fact that the Elves' last hope of victory was destroyed. The land of Hithlum was lost, the Sons of Fëanor were largely scattered, and the peoples of Beleriand had been decimated. Morgoth's Orcs made a heap of the Elven and Mannish dead in the centre of Anfauglith.
The War of Wrath took place after Eärendil sailed to Valinor and persuaded the Valar to help those whom they had forsaken. The Valar gathered an army of Maiar, Vanyar, and those Noldor who had stayed in Valinor. The Teleri refused their aid, due to an old offence dealt them by the Noldor of Beleriand, but consented to ferry the armies of the Valar in their famous ships. This battle marked the first appearance of the winged dragons, most notably Ancalagon the Black, but the Valar eventually won. Morgoth was captured, and cast out of Arda, but his lands, as well as most of Beleriand, had been destroyed and sunk under the sea in the heat of battle.

Nailed it.

Came in here to say the entire Known Space universe could work well with a variety of genres, even.

I feel like a game set in this universe would be pretty awesome. There's few western games as it is and it also has some fantasy thrown in too.
Ive always dreamed of a dark tower game series in the same style as fallout. If done right, the game(s) could be amazing!

I don't know how I'd transition this into a video game exactly, but given that the show is almost certainly to be cancelled soon, there needs to be SOME kind of future for the story. Comics, graphic novels, movie, whatever, but I imagine a video game could do a lot with the amazing amount of details, side characters and boundless universe concepts that Fringe is known for.

Wouldn't necessarily have to follow the main characters, either. You could play as anyone and just interact with the cast periodically.

Man, I'm bad at this...

Batman Beyond

Happened and was fairly terrible. I want the next Arkham game to be BB though, or at least take place in that scenario with flashbacks to Bruce's doings and how they affect Terry in the "current" time.

Fringe was already mentioned, but I wouldn't make it like LA Noire unless there were some REALLY heavy tweaking done with it.

I would LOVE to see Crank made into a game. It's basically a crazy GTA game already, just make it good and I'll play the shit out of it.

And now for the insanity:

Highschool_of_the_Dead_vol01.jpg

Take the base from the Onechanbara series, touch it up to have an actual budget and assets, have it go through at LEAST the end of the second act (
the mall!
) and go from there. You could even do ridiculous shit like give the girls extra outfits to unlock that pertain to the manga and anime.

A Wheel of Time video game could be pretty great, but I'm sure if it were to happen, the execution would be shit. Mistborn might do well.

Serious Sam is a wicked gahbidge series for chowdaheads.

So so much potential...open world action RPG....give me KH gameplay in Fallout open world

Yeah, gotta rep this pretty hard too. The world is perfectly suited for a videogame.

A Zelda/Fallout 3 mashup set in this universe would probably be my game of the generation.

Something based on The City & the City by China Miéville could be fantastic.

Heres a bit from the wiki.

"The City & the City takes place in the cities of Besźel and Ul Qoma. These two cities actually occupy much of the same geographical space, but via the volition of their citizens (and the threat of the secret power known as Breach), they are perceived as two different cities.

A denizen of one city must dutifully 'unsee' (that is, consciously erase from their mind or fade into the background) the denizens, buildings, and events taking place in the other city — even if they are an inch away.

This separation is emphasized by the style of clothing, architecture, gait, and the way denizens of each city generally carry themselves. Residents of the cities are taught from childhood to recognize things belonging to the other city without actually seeing them.

Ignoring the separation, even by accident, is called "breaching" - a terrible crime by the citizens of the two cities, even worse than murder."

I would so love a Adventure Time game. Actually, I'd totally love two:

The first is a really awesome adventure game.

The second is some sort of Super Smash Bros. Street Fighter fighting game.

I wanna play as Finn and hit people in the face.

Also a proper Song of Ice and Fire game.

I'd freaking love to see a good, open-world Futurama game. It blows my mind that there hasn't been any Futurama games (outside of one).

Yes. Very good. The main character is basically a cowboy in Paris. Plus the focus on Twinborn instead of Mistborn makes more interesting fights because they don't have every metal available to them.

I would say this but I'm not sure how much can be done with it:

I guess it could be a Max Payne meets Red Dead Redemption style of game with the powers being like The Darkness (?).

And this series has a lot of potential to me to work as a video/computer game:

AnneMcCaffrey_Dragonflight.jpg

Panzer Dragoon style dragon flight sequences + Dragon Age/Mass Effect dialogue + Skyrim open world. Sign me up.

Pure comedy shows are really hard to translate into videogames because the shows are mostly based on great, funny writing. With Futurama, there aren't many aspects of the show that could translate over to game mechanics.

Why do you like Futurama? Yes, the crazy world it takes place in is definitely part of it, but you like it because it is funny. How do you make an action game, with Fry platforming and shooting things, funny? An open-world RPG might work, with Fry having to deliver things to different worlds. And it could even have some great, funny writing included. But the problem is that what you'd be doing most of the time - exploring, or going from point A to point B - isn't funny. It represents nothing of the show you love.

The only genre where I think Futurama could work is as a point-and-click.

Still earth.. but a game with a similar environment would be neat. In the same vein, Fahrenheit 451 would be acceptable as well.

I've always been really bummed that Oban Star-Racers didn't get a game. IGPX, a forgettable futuristic racer series from the same time, got a game.
Brandon Sanderson's The Way of Kings. If only fantasy games were even half as creative.

Also his Mistborn series. He puts care into coming up with intricate magic systems. I can't help but think how awesome his magic systems would be in an action-rpg.

this thread shows how limited our games are in scope and originality.

Theres a lot to do out there but i suppose HW limits whats possible.

A HxH game would prolly leave a lot of people dissapointed and i doubt something like the nen system could be pulled off acurately.
I mean nen is something thats unique to each user!
HunterXHunter is just great its characters really shine.

I also think it is possible to make a good Futurama game thats funny, they were able to do it with the simpsons, so why not :p

Id always think when watching anime how they would make good MMO's.
A lot of anime start with a character who's crap and throughout the series grows to be ultimate. Perfect for MMO's.
The HunterXHunter universe has the potential to make a good MMO but i know that it would never be done right.

I mean to this day no one has made a Dragonball/Z/GT game that accurately emulates the ridiculous fast paced combat. Its usually tekken with DB skins or some crappy open world action adventure game where u can fly, but dosent really follow the story or universe closely.

Id love to play a fantasy rpg world style game that can match the scale set in these pictures

If only major Mexican gaming studios existed... then we might have people actually using their imaginations on pre-Colombian America:

So much cool history and a very interesting pantheon of gods between Aztec/Mayan/Incan peoples. An Assassin's Creed style game would be nuts.

^Very true

The same can be said about many ancient cultures!!

I would love to be able to run around ancient egypt in the first or 3rd person viewpoints.
An elder scrolls type game set in ancient egypt would be too RAD!

Third person shooter/adventure. Solve weird cases, kill shapeshifters/bandits, find observers, travel between 2 universes.

I'd buy it.

My mind is blown at how appropriate Cyrillic seems for some of those names.
