Sony: Naughty Dog will be on Vita, all of our studios [Naughty Dog: Nope]

The question is pretty unambiguous, dude.

Q: "What about the top dog studios....MM, Guerilla, SSM......are we gonna see them playing with Vita? Even Naughty Dog?"
A: " Yeah, absolutely, you'll see a number of games coming out from all of our studios"

I think the interpretation is pretty clear.

Naughty Dog reminds me of my lead. The guy is not really a team player at all, if it's not automation coding, he won't help out the team at all, not with manual testing, not with performance testing, not with database administration, but damn it if that guy can't code. ND also won't help out the team at all, not with Move, not with Vita, but damn it if they're not a top 5 dev.

That's one thing I like about Sony, they let their studios do what they want, even if it doesn't necessarily go with what the company wants. Nintendo and Microsoft don't let their studios have that kind of liberty. Out of curiosity, you mentioned TLF being an external project, so was Golden Shower, I read before that Hennig kinda oversaw the story there, is that true? Did you at least have some input in that product?

golden what?
are you posting on your iphone?

It's a joke haha. Can't believe you hadn't heard it yet.

Question still stands. Did ND have an input on that product?

we worked closely with Bend on a ton of things - from sharing assets to making sure they had access to Amy as they desired. of course, we didn't stick our noses where it didn't belong, but we were glad to help.

Thanks.

You don't force one of your best teams to do anything, else you risk losing important people.

Well they force them to make games only on playstation machines. But yeah, I agree.

The guy was a talking troll who didn't know shit. How can you trust someone who says absolutely at the beginning of every answer? Need more Yoshida's and less preppy privileged suits.

Releasing UC3 too early wasn't forced though?

I think that was a ND decision. Evan Wells and Balestra talked about it.

They're wholly owned by Sony so I don't understand your comment at all.

They force them to do something. Expected, yes, but they are bound by something. They don't even have the liberty that SOE has. ND can't release a game on PC if they wanted to.

BTW, I just remembered that the dude from this interview is also the source for Call of Duty Vita being a Fall 2012. That "fact" is now a rumor IMO.

Exactly, take everything he said with a grain of salt, because he obviously had no idea what he was talking about. It is the same interview that the COD crap came from too.

Yeah, Golden Abyss has amazing production values. Bend are pretty competent as well. Although, it'll be nice to see you guys develop for the Vita one day.

Yeah, but I don't take the OP to mean they're working on something now. I expect that once The Last of Us is finished, they'll evaluate, and it might make sense for them to then make a Vita game, or two. Naughty Dog has also expressed concerns about not wanting their employees to get burnt out on Uncharted, and having them work on some Vita games could be a good way to prevent that, especially if the scope is smaller.

Moreover, while I'm certain they're working on Uncharted 4 for PS4 (YAY!), AFTER that I could see Naughty Dog finally saying "yeah, we're done with that franchise for a while now."

WOW WHAT A SMART GUY THIS IS.

that's a really odd thing to like. No second party studio should have the autonomy to outright say "fuck you" to their parent company's wishes without repercussion. I mean, it's nice from ND's perspective, but I can't honestly see how ND can stick to this long term and continue to remain under Sony's umbrella.

If Sony forced Naughty Dog to make a Vita game and some staff left in a huff, I can't say I'd really care. In fact, I'd give Sony some credit for actually trying to make the Vita a success. Better that than another PSP, where their top developers actively avoided it and ultimately made it look like an afterthought. I desperately hope Sony have learnt from their mistakes with the PSP but who knows what will actually stick. Chances are, the Vita will be forgotten once the PS4 is out and the cycle will continue.

Nintendo used its pimp hand on Retro more than once and lost some of what were supposed to be the most important people. They continued to make great games and those important people were never heard from again.

So Naughty Dog is not working on vita because they think console is better place for them?

I can understand that they want to stick in one place, but Uncharted 3 was not really that awesome as 2nd one, so I don't know where this 'confidence' is coming from.

A good developer can make awesome game on anywhere regardless of platform, at least that's my belief. If they can't, then they are not AAA developer. period.

ND making a balls to the wall PS4 launch title would make it worth it.

Your best team is there for to do what they are told to do. That's the first step of good management. Otherwise there really is no point.

If you can't imagine, think about delta force that will do whatever the heck they want to do.

This mindset needs to be reinforced for every developer. Nintendo is the only one who seems to understand the benefits of getting all of your teams on to whatever hardware possible. Link's Awakening is continually lauded as one of the greats in the series, let alone a great handheld game in its own right.. and it was practically made by the same team that did A Link to the Past.

Now if only Sony could see that and figure out a creative and financially secure method to go about it.

Sony really should step up and encourage - no scratch that- FORCE 1st parties to support vita games.

You don't have to do that forever. Just the beginning of the life cycle of vita and then 3rd parties will take over and fill the gap.

Right now Sony can't risk failing Vita. If Sony themselves and 1st parties can't see that (due to arrogance, confidence, or whatever the heck they are) then well, there really is no hope.

I hope Yoshida is smart enough to realize this.

It sounds like Sony is getting a bit desperate to assure people that there will be games for this thing.

If 1st party is thinking about Vita as after thought, then yeah they have all reasons to be desperate. That means they can't control their own software developers.

I actually disagree with this and suspect that Sony knows it as well, which might explain the lethargic approach they've had so far.

As much as I'd like to see Sony go into panic mode and start taking drastic steps to ensure the platform's success, Sony's best years in gaming were before they launched the PSP. The freedom to focus on the living room wars without handheld distractions would not necessarily be a bad thing.

One of the biggest issues the PSP had was the fact it was viewed as an outsourced or B team console when it came to any large franchises. Thats not to say B teams cant make a fantastic game because they can.

But if you preach to the choir all the time about that console experience now on handheld and your top teams say haha no we are too busy to play with that then it hurts the message.

I'm sure Sony knows they are facing uphill battle. But right now I need more confirmation that Sony is making sure they are kicking every 1st parties butt to come up with solid software for Vita.

Apparently Naughty Dog thinks otherwise.

Wait, both? Horrible strategy.

It's a good strategy if you're completely delusional and think people will buy both systems just because they can. But in reality, it's a pretty god damn stupid strategy if you've any desire to make people buy than one of their systems. I mean, yeah it's a good idea for low profile games like Warrior's Lair and Hustle Kings, as they're not system sellers. But the high profile games? Those are the ones you want to keep exclusive because it makes their system look unique.

I'm not sure how I'd react if Sony really went through with that. The way I look at it right now is no different to the way I looked at FFXIII and DMC4 when they went multiplatform, but in this case, Sony would be doing it to themselves.

I really need to go play some games, this train of thought is depressing me. I refuse to believe they're that stupid.

Yea, I think remote play is a great asset for the "ps3 (ps4) on the go" kick. Otherwise, I would want to play original games on the vita.

who are you calling second party? ;)

Pushing the Vita hard. I am glad they are doing this. The PSP got B teams all the time.

Vita will pick up where the PSP left off, I'm sure

Let's be honest -- most high-quality western developers view working on a handheld as beneath them.

Note: Not saying that's true of Naughty Dog but, ... well, anyway.

Media Molecule is doing a Vita game. Zypper's game comes out in March.

They don't really FORCE them to do that. I think people are probably smart enough to do the math when they get an offer to work for Sony or sell their company to Sony that they're going to be a Sony-platform only team from here on out. They DECIDED that they were willing to do that. They could have said no.
