Swearing doesn't bother me but the older i get the more i hate Mafioso rap and commercialism. I am reminded of Michael Jai White's interview where he does not like a lot of rap.

Hip hop wpuld be better if people stopped rapping about swag and got back rapping about women, parties, and homeboys.

Rip hip hop: 1985-1997

Like the poster who beat me to it, I'd much rather they cut down the rampant misogyny and usage of the n-word. Curse words are just words to me.

It's a habit man. I've tried to cut down on this word and I rarely use it now, but when you are surrounded by friends who constantly use it haha, it just slips out sometimes.

I can kind of understand rappers using the word in lyrics but when they try to change it, it might not sound right at all.

regardless still a rnb singer and RnB in general doesn't have a lot of curse words.

Did hip-hop albums stop coming in two versions? Back in the day most also had a censored version.

Is the misogyny habit too?

Not you specifically of course.

I'm not calling for curses to be completely removed from the genre, but if your lyrics use the word fuck 10 times in a row for no apparent reason, it means you're a poor lyricist.

Sol..

I am Wayne Brady.
Can't imagine how cursing is the thing that turns you off about it. Maybe if you're just talkin' bout the n-word but all cursing in general? Do you hate comedians that curse? What about movies with foul language?

Yes, and here's proof -

I think cursing works for a lot of artists but yea, here's proof that you can rap without cursing.

I enjoy Eric B & Rakim - Lyrics of Fury off of Follow the Leader. An "aggressive" song without any cursing.

Rapping would be better without misogyny and homophobia

I swear Childish Gambino is the worst for that, I actually can't tolerate it and I'm not a prude

Or it could at least have some kind of meaning beyond SWAG like classic hip hop (Grandmaster Flash <3)

Oh this thread is targeted towards mainstream rap nowadays like Waka Flocka? This kind of rap has existed for awhile but it didn't seem that kind of bad because there was usually more balanced music on the radio at times.

This. Can't these guys sing about something without hating on women and gays?

I really want to like Childish Gambino, but damn, Glover's doing the same misogynistic crap that others do. I dig his production, but it's hard to embrace the rest.

Then you'd be wrong.

Childish Gambino has misogyny and homophobia type lyrics? I heard like a couple of songs from him and didn't like him but I never would of guessed he would go that route.

How is Rick Ross and Lil Wayne not hip-hop? They're a part of hip-hop just as much as, let's say Common, is. Do I like it? Not a single bit but saying it isn't hip-hop is ignorant and foolish. All that music has it's time and place in the world.

I dunno it isn't the worst (obviously) but it seems more pronounced with him. Maybe because he's actually educated and clever.

His misogyny is pretty much all tongue in cheek if that matters to you. Not sure where the homophobia stuff comes from, a couple of his songs he talk about kids calling him a 'fag' growing up. I'm not a huge Gambino fan so he could say some stupid shit. He was recently on the WTF podcast, talking about being called gay and other shit that makes me doubtful he is homophobic at all.

Nope, that's rap.

No message worth listening too. Listen to my examples, see the difference.

So I am listening to a couple of Jdilla tracks, and Busta Rhymes comes on and the first 10 seconds is screaming the word fuck. I know he's a garbage rapper, but it just ruined the mood, and ruined Jays track. I hate when rappers substitute words with curses, it's why I don't listen to any mainstream shit. /vent

When Busta came on the scene it was not regurgitated shit my friend. He brought something new to the table. His style and flow is unmatched.

Just listen to the albums 'The Coming' and 'When Disaster Strikes' and come back.

Some examples;

When Disaster Strikes

Survival Hungry

So Hardcore

The Whole World Lookin' At Me

And profanity has some artistic merit to it. It helps to depict a certain attitude.

Gambino's misogynistic? Most of his songs with misogyny are tongue-in-cheek or it's pretty obvious he's intending for sane people to see him as a douchebag.

Bet you're under 25. The correct answer is you weren't there to know the difference.

I knew you were one of those types of people.
First you're all HIP-HOP DIED IN THE 90s and now you trying to say hip-hop and rap are two different genres of music.
Get outta here.

I think he's trying to communicate.

Its not okay to degrade women because you dated one you didn't like.

the "that's not hip-hop, that's rap" people are the absolutely worst I swear.

Oh so my age is stops me from exploring music in the past in order to know the difference right? Good to know lol just gtfo with that BS.
